ONLY IN BRIGHTON

Everyone around me is feeling a chill, as we pass throughone of May’s sporadic downpours that encourage the

feeling that we enter the Brighton Fringe shivering and stepout at the end blinking into summer sunshine. Everyone is coldexcept for me. Because I got sunburnt sitting on the beachyesterday.

To be fair, the warmth from my glowing face means that I’mthe only one sitting in a vest top while everyone else wraps upwarm in woolies. I myself had a jumper on yesterday while Iwas guilelessly toasting my visage, but the stiff wind andpatchy cloud caught me in its deception and the frazzlehappened. And it won’t be the last chance this month to burn.

Most popup Brighton Fringe venues have an outsidespace – from The Warren to Republic – and they are gloriousto enjoy, especially after work with a cooling beverage. Butjust because there’s a breeze that won’t stop me covering upwith sunscreen. I mean, it smells of summer for one thing, butsecondly it’s a great excuse to talk to the stranger next to youin the guise of a concerned good deed. Well hello new pal.

No sentence ever worth saying started with: "At the risk ofoffending...” But, at the risk of offending, ahead of this

summer's European Championships, I've decided thatsupporting England in a major football tournament is akin tobeing religiously agnostic.

Your first exposure to religion as a kid is sort of magical. Youlearn that everyone you know and love some day will die, butsome day, if you're good, you'll be able to see themagain. And then you lose onpenalties in the quarterfinals to Germany and cry.

It's becomeunfashionable to support England in this godless 21st century.Your critics will point to seemingly fatal flaws in your theology, such as some of the players being casually racist, or footage ofsupporters trashing a bar with gay abandon. But you hold firm, not because you actually believe that one day the secondcoming will actually happen, but because on the off chance itdid, you want to be able to be smug about it.

"I always believed!", you cry through your tearencrustedface as Dele Alli takes a selfie with Jamie Vardy during theLondon open top bus parade, that will later be captioned"#championees #squadgoals". Yes, a gang of England fans mayhave thrown a café chair through the window of a Parisianorphanage just days earlier. Yes, the new special Euro 2016winners single by James Corden, Jessie J and this year's winnerof Britain's Got Talent may be excruciatingly unlistenable.

None of this matters though, because you always knew itwould happen again, and now you get to watch all thenaysayers who dismissed Jack Wilshere as an overhypedcrybaby burn in a cacophony of infernal damnation.

So drag yourself back to church this summer, for Christ wasborn in 1966, and who’s to say that fifty years later he won’tcome back to save us? He does have a wonderful sense ofoccasion after all.

Summer is a coming in and the birds do sing cuckoo. Wellcuckoo indeed, the first glimmer of a sunny day and out

came my shorts. I love shorts and always have. I think I wasthe only eleven year old who went to the grammar school ingrey shorts and not long trousers, well for a week I did. Then Irealised that my gangly legs were a source of much humourand derision. When it came to my first summer at the bigschool I could not wait to shed the grey flannels and get backinto shorts for the holidays. It's a move that I have stuck withfor much of my adult life.

When I was head hunted fromone job in publishing to a seniorrole at another publishing house,my future boss, in my interview, asked me if I had any questionsthat I would like answered. Mostgrown ups would have askedabout holiday entitlement, pensions, expenses. Not me, Iasked if they would have a problem with me wearing shorts inthe good weather. Of course I was not being totally honest asback then I would cycle in from Streatham to Mayfair in allweathers and always in shorts.

At the weekend I pulled open the shorts drawer, oh yes theyhave their own drawer, and there are plenty of pairs to choosefrom – or I thought so. One after one I tried them on only todiscover that the drawer had shrunk them, well most of them.Fortunately there are a few pairs that I can still get intowithout looking like I have been badly trussed for the oven.

The next question is of course footwear. As you might haveread last week I have new red sandals from Wolkyshop, perfect to wear with shorts. The question is socks, can youwear socks with sandals. I know the naffest image is of thesandal and grey sock combo favoured by gentlemen of acertain age, but I reckon I can rock the sock with a brightstripe or spot, what do you think?

RUFUS WAINWRIGHT

Rufus Wainwright is agenerous fellow, gamely

answering my lengthyquestions about his journeyof musical discovery. The fullinterview can be read atthelatest.co.uk but here aresome of the best bits.

Could you tell me more abouthow you discovered classicalmusic?I was a normal thirteen yearold until one day my motherbrought a recording of Verdi'sRequiem with Leontyne Priceand Jussi Björling to thehouse and we listened to itfrom top to bottom. By theend I was a complete andutter opera fanatic so it wasreally that recording that andthat piece specifically thatchanged my life in the span oftwo hours. Like any intenseart form it devours youswiftly.

How did you go aboutcomposing Prima Donna[Rufus’ first opera]?Well, I composed PrimaDonna over the span of abouttwo or three years and I washeavily involved in all theaspects of creation. I wrotethe libretto and built thedrama and so forth. I basicallydedicated all of my energiesto what it takes to write anopera, which was good at thatperiod because my mother'shealth was starting to decline,

so it gave me a chance tofocus my energies elsewhereas opposed to the tragicevents that were occurringbefore me. So, a lot of passionand sadness, triumph and joyand darkness went in to thepiece. And then to see itbeing released on DeutscheGrammophon with that iconiclabel and working with theBBC Symphony and the greatScottish soprano Janis Kellyhas been my greatest dreamcome true!

You've mentioned previouslyhow the classicalestablishment sees you as a“usurper” and “dilettante”,does this bother you?No, it doesn't bother me. Itdefinitely takes a bit ofhardening at the outset tohandle the attitude, but yourealise eventually thatintense criticism, especially inthe world of opera, is verymuch part of the tradition ofthat art form. At one point aVerdi critic said to Verdi thatRigoletto had no tunes in it soneedless to say the path isstrewn with wrong views andit's really one hundred yearsdown the line when the realstory comes out... so both thecritic and I will be dead sowho cares? [laughs]

Who are your favouritecomposers and why?Verdi has always been myfavourite. I love both hismusic and his career. I likehow he handles the publicand the press and theestablishment and did whathe wanted to do as a humanbeing and at the same time

constantly deepening in hiswork becoming more andmore classical as he wentalong. I feel like I'm a RichardStrauss baby. I seem to alwaysgravitate towards RichardStrauss. So Verdi and StraussI'd say are my two favourites.

How is your upcomingsecond opera about RomanEmperor Hadrian going?Hadrian is going great! I'mworking on it right now as wespeak. Chugging along andvery excited about it. I'm alittle nervous too, as anyoneshould be if they're choosingto try to conquer Rome withmusic. So, wish me luck!

Have you spent much time inor around Brighton onprevious tour stops?I've been to Brighton manytimes. It's always been one of

the highlights of myEuropean journeys. I couldlive in Brighton, frankly. It'ssuch a lovely place.

What can the audienceexpect at the Dome, will it be a mix of opera, pop, JudyGarland and the Shakespearesonnets? You know? It will be. I can saythat for sure this time. I willbe performing some Judysongs because I'm trying togear up for that concert andhaving released the sonnetsrecently I want to plug thatrecord and I'm always"operaing" it up... I'm alwaysdoing the operation. So that'swhat it'll be.

Rugby AM has been an amazing journey so far, startingthree years ago on a radio station in my garage in Leeds. It

began as a morning radio show, with myself and former GreatBritain legend Keith Senior, as we set out to showcase thepersonalities in rugby league.

When Jamie JonesBuchanan joined the team in November2013, he added extra ingredients, attitude and focus. RugbyAM was never just a show, our intentions were to build abrand that could join the dots between the players, the clubs, the fans and the business community.

In June 2014, we got our break on TV with a monthly showon Premier Sports and inNovember 2014, welaunched our weekly showon the Made TelevisionNetwork. We nowbroadcast on sevenchannels, soon to be nine, recording over 100,000viewers per week. A big thank you to all the players who havesupported us since day one.

The real value of Rugby League for me is the people fromthe guys at the grass roots who work tirelessly for theircommunities, for nothing but a love of the game right up tothe super stars who are so accessible and always willing tohelp promote the game.

I hope the people of the Brighton region and all the viewersof Latest TV will give the sport a go if you’re not already a fan.Although it’s predominantly a northern heartland sport, theRFL and Rugby AM are in partnership with some of the leadingclubs and are reaching as far and as wide as possible.

This year the test matches return to the Olympic stadium aswell as the Challenge Cup final at Wembley and even soonerthan that we host a fan branch event at Hemel Stags onTuesday 7th June!Saturdays, 10am, repeats Sundays, 1pm & Wednesdays, 2pm.

This week I had the chance to catch up with my friendFrazer Hines. Dr Who fans will remember that Frazer

played Jamie McCrimmon, Dr Who's assistant from 1966 to1969. He appeared in 117 episodes of the original series, more than any other assistant. Emmerdale fans will rememberFrazer as the character Joe Sugden, a part he played between1972 to 1994. What many people don't know, is that Frazerwas in a film with Charlie Chaplin. So I had to ask him aboutthat and what it was like to work with a Hollywood legend.

You were just a young boy when you worked with CharlieChaplin?I'm probably one of the fewpeople who is still alive thatworked with Charlie Chaplin.I was only 10 years old. I wasin the film 'King of New York'and it was Chaplin's lastleading role, his son Michaelwas in the film too. Charlie was amazing to work with andalways very kind to me even though I was only a little boy.

Is Dr Who still keeping you busy?Yes, I've already been to America five times this year for DrWho Conventions and I am going back later in the year. It'sfunny how a show I did over 40 years ago is making me moremoney now than it did then. I've just been presented with alovely award from the Dr Who Appreciation Society for thebest contribution to Dr Who. It is on my mantelpiece now. I'venever won an award before!

You should write a book about your experiencesI have written two books actually. One is called 'Hines Sight',my autobiography and the other is called '50 Shades of Frazer:My Life in Pictures’. Both available online!

DISCLOSURE

Wildlife was createdby Disclosure in early

summer 2014 as an extensionof their hugely successful liveand DJ shows. What began astiny and very sweaty eastLondon parties, soon grewinto a global prospect within amatter of months and foundDisclosure curating eventsin major cites across theworld and hosting stages atvarious festivals in the UK,Europe and USA. Theseincluded Wildlife lineups atGlastonbury, Unknown, ExitFestival as well as bespokeevents at The Greek Theatrein Berkley, Lincoln Park Zoo inChicago, Detroit and asummer residency at Space inIbiza.

Less than a year later, theyreached out to their goodfriends Rudimental in order toput together the inauguralWildlife festival at ShorehamAirport or what is nowofficially called Brighton CityAirport. What does GuyLawrence, one half ofDisclosure think the venueshould be called? "Shoreham!"he say emphatically. He, alongwith his younger brotherHoward have literally takenthe world by storm withDisclosure, an act that hashelped to reestablish house

music in the multifariousworld of EDM. And it wasn'tso long ago that the Lawrencebrothers were twoinexperienced producersusing the skills they'd pickedup in their music technologyAlevel class to make a stringof underground club hits, beginning with ‘Latch’ and‘White Noise’.

Winner of the Best NewFestival at the 2015 UKFestival Awards, Wildlifetapped into an audience wholike variety and musicalitywithin their music; music fromacross the board, with artistsand DJs such as George Ezra,Mark Ronson, WuTang Clan,Annie Mac and Jamie xx justthe tip of an iceberg.

This year, the line up isbigger, better, and even moreeclectic, with the likes of hiphop legend Ice Cube, Brightonindie rootsrocker James Bay,technohouse king Carl Cox,indie sensations Bastille, newkidontheblock Jack Garratt, drum'n'bass supremo Andy C,alttechno experimentalistsFour Tet, Avalanches, and newage hip hoppers De La Souljust a few of the names thatwill be bestriding five stages.

How do you find thecuratorial side of things? "Wejust call people up and ask,"says Guy. "We're alwaysamazed that people say 'yes!'.We are able to book a lot ofpeople I thought we wouldnever meet or see. We're fansof everyone we book, and Ithink that personal touchhelps. I think that people findit refreshing that artists arecurating the lineup, to makeit more personal."

Were you able to see muchof the festival last year? "Notas much as we would haveliked," says Guy. "We werealso booked to play anotherfestival that weekend. Butthis year we are planning onbeing there the wholeweekend, beginning on Fridaynight for a little prefestivalparty, and then seeing asmuch as possible. We'vecleared the diaries… Last yearwe loved WuTang and Skeptaand JME who filled in for SamSmith (who went down ill justbefore the festival)"

And this year? "I'm lookingforward to Flume, and JamieWoon, whose last album isjust incredible; Busta Rhymes, and some of the grime artists.Last year we spent a lot oftime in the backstage areabecause there are a lot offriends there. But we alsomade a big effort to make itnice for everyone. I thinkthat's really important. Andwe're of course really lookingforward to playing again thisyear on the main stage!"

Any changes made from lastyear? “Not really, just a few

tweaks here and there, thelayout will be different… Wewere surprised at howsmoothly it went last year."

The brothers grew up justup the road in Reigate, andventured down to Brightonmanyatime in their earlyforays into dance music, seeing the likes of JoyOrbison at seafront clubs likeDigital, Funky Buddha andAudio (all have subsequentlychanged their names to TheArch, The Tube and Patternsrespectively), and as suchtheir parents and even theirGrandfather are expected tomake the trip, as he did lastyear. "He loved it! He saidhe'd never seen anything likeit… That was great, to be ableto show him what we do."

Why did you choose theairport as the venue? "Wewent to visit it and everyonethought it would be perfect. There's the Great Escape, butthere isn't like a festival in afield in the area. It neededone!"Brighton City Airport(Shoreham!), 11 & 12 Junewww.wildlifefestival.com

Last week was perhaps the busiest of myyear. Brighton Festival clashed with

Brighton & Hove Food & Drink Festival and abusy week of writing projects in a fabulouscacophony of food, music and creativity was tosay the least exhilarating.

Food wise it started withan amazing event atJeremy's at Borde Hillwhere three chefs createdan incredible menu inspiredby their favourite musicals. We started with incrediblecanapes and a cocktail fromBlackdown Distillery. Thiswas followed by host chefJimmy Grey’s amazing"meadow" starter, Bonner from The Set's witty"Little Mermaid" fish course and Sam Lambertfrom 64 Degrees’ amazing Oliver inspiredtongue dish.

And as if this was not enough Jimmydelivered a magical dessert that looked like agiant steamed sponge but was in fact adelicate riff on the idea of rhubarb andcustard. A stunning night that also marked thestart of a new push to raise funds for localfood charity Fareshare.

The following Tuesday we all gather for aspectacular Indian Banquet at the newMalmaison Hotel in Brighton Marina. ChefKanthi Thamma and his team are alsopassionate about Fareshare and with the help

of the hotel and contributions from Butler'sWine Cellar and Blackdown Spirits we weretreated to an amazing feast of delicious foods.

First out was a platter of street foods andchutney, a delicious combination of

mouthwatering delights. Then a dish of pan friedcod on spiced potato thatshowcased Kanthi's abilityto be delicate with spice.Next a tandoor roastsupreme of guinea fowlwith a xacuti sauce andrice, vibrant stuff fromGoa.

Finally, a sweet andsoothing dessert of

pistachio kulfi, gulab jamoon and carrot halvathat sent us home happy. But not before thehighlight of the evening.

We had already been treated to an amazingset of Indian music followed by brilliant Indiandancing. Then Mr Butler ran the raffle and anauction to raise the much needed charityfunds.

All this was good yes, great even – but notas great as the moment that chef Kanthi cameout, ripped off his chef's whites and joined thedancers for an mind blowing display of dancethat had us all wide eyed with admiration.

Kanthi and the team raised an inspiringamount of money from the evening too, by myreckoning close to the target of £4,000.

Brighton Festival this year has certainlychampioned works created by local

artists in many disciplines, from the exquisiteclowning of Spymonkey to the impressive andnationally acclaimed collaboration betweenHydrocracker and Blast Theory in OperationBlack Antler. I loved this immersive work, engaging, exciting and at times scary stuff.

I was also impressed by something else.Within minutes of arriving I realised that Iknew oneof theactors well. That couldhave beenan issue in awork wheretheaudiencehas to getso fullyinvolved –but not forthistalentedartist.

I'm talking about writer and performerRobert Cohen, a hard working artist who thisyear has not only been performing inOperation Black Antler but has also beenactive in David Mamet's Glengarry Glen Ross.

Cohen is no stranger to the Brighton Theatre

scene andover the yearshis work, bothas actor andasactor/writer,has beenmuchacclaimed, from the darkdrama of TheTrials ofHarveyMatusow to the sad comedy of Quint.

Now, after an already hectic season he iscontinuing with a season of performances ofhis self penned and again acclaimed SomethingRotten.

Cohen’s show retells the tale of Hamletfrom the viewpoint of the Prince’s murderousUncle Claudius – examining the motives of aman who, apparently without compunction, kills his brother, marries his former sisterinlaw, assumes the crown of Denmark, and thusexcites both the homicidal and the famouslyprocrastinatory instincts of Shakespeare’s mostfamous character. An unmissable performancefrom a formidable talent.Sweet Waterfront 2, from 30 May to 5 JuneTickets sweetvenues.com or brightonfringe.org

> The Stairs: one of the great lost bands of the‘90s play Concorde 2

Liverpool’s home grown garage psych rockers The Stairswere truly one of the great lost bands at the turn of the

‘90s. Championed by the likes of Elvis Costello, Noel Gallagherand Paul Weller, they influenced a new generation of bandsincluding The Coral &The Zutons, with theirexciting cocktail ofNuggets style ‘60sgarage, R'n'B, andpsychedelia.

Led by Edgar'Summertyme' Jones andfeaturing originalmembers Ged Lynn andPaul Maguire, the bandreformed for a oneoffshow in their hometownof Liverpool last year, and will shortly be on the road for a small number of dates.Just recently they released the live album, ‘Live At The Cavern1991’, a recently rediscovered recording that was made on aSony Walkman, and which demonstrates the raw and visceralpower of the three piece, who in their time only released theone studio album, the much sought after Mexican R'n'B.

Since The Stairs called it a day in 1994, Jones has carved outa career fronting other bands, such as the Isrites, The Big Kidsand Free Peace, as well as releasing solo albums, and playingas a session musician for the likes of Paul Weller, fellowLiverpudlian Ian McCulloch, Johnny Marr, and Ocean ColourScene. The likes of Weller, Marr and Noel Gallagher have sungtheir praises in the past, and with some cajoling by friends andfellow musicians, Jones was finally persuaded to reform theband, in the knowledge that with The Stairs he had somethingvery special indeed.Saturday 4 June, Concorde 2, 7pm, £15

MUSICJEFF HEMMINGS

The Festival is over, but we happily still have one moreweek of the Fringe to extend the party a smidge longer.

Nick Drake is one of music's most melancholy figures, revered as the archetype ofthe 'geniusunappreciatedintheirtime' mold, but thesublime quality of his musicjustifies such idolatry. Whenworking at Island Records, television composer MichaelBurdett was asked to throwout some tapes, and after 20years he decided to play one, discovering an unknown versionof one of Drake's greatest works.

Burdett offered people all over the UK a chance to hear therecording on headphones in exchange for photographingthem, resulting in the show Strange Face: Adventures with alost Nick Drake recording, which celebrates the life of thebrilliant musician. Eliciting praise from Broadway Baby for its“mesmeric description and insight”, there are still tickets forStrange Face available for the Old Market show.

Continuing in the poetic songwriter vein is InvoluntaryNoises: the songs of Jody Trehy, which showcases the work ofthe Dubliner backed with a five piece band. Socially engaged (Ican hear the ears of Billy Bragg fans pricking up), Trehy bringsa dramatic and unconventional voice to the singersongwriterscene.

If you like your folk then Trehy is well worth a punt duringhis run at Sweet Dukebox. He's been acclaimed as an “Irishsoul poet in the tradition that produced Van Morrison, butwith the added flavour of Jacques Brel” by the Scotland Heraldin a five star review, so he constitutes a fairly calculated puntfor a musical treat this week.Strange Face, The Old Market, 2 June, 8.30pmInvoluntary Noises, Sweet Dukebox, 31 May–5 June, 9.10pm
