Several members whohad not been present in a fewmonths were welcomed backand we signed up two newmembers. We welcome LarryPeterson and his wife, Jackie,to our group.

We were certainly glad to seePatsy and Alvin Holt back withus. They both looked healthy.David Perren made themeeting and was welcomedby all. Jim and Yvonne Urban, two of our relatively newmembers. were back aftertheir summer travels. Charlieand Connie King were also awelcomed sight at this pastmeeting.

We were all terribly saddenedby the untimely death of a

Paul, 77, was one of ourClub’s staunchest supporters. You would always see himpresent helping Bobby Bradleywith the cooking at ourannual auction and fish fry.Several Club members hadshared good food and laughterwih him in Newnan in Augustjust a few weeks before hispassing. We sorely missed himat our just concluded outing atPine Mountain.

We also want to rememberClub members Jerry and GwenGrayson in our prayers as theyboth continue to deal bravelywith age related illnesses. RoyWatson and Billy East arerecovering from earlier backsurgery. We hope they canrejoin us soon. We certainly did enjoy our FishFry at FDR State Park. Thefish and side dishes were theirusual delicious, the result ofmany hours of work on thepart of the whole club.

I invite everyone to be on hand

for our next regular Clubmeeting on October 9th. Wewill have our resident earlyFord V8 expert, Hal Shaffer, onhand to discuss and displayflat head V8 distributors andother electrical components. You don’t want to miss this.

ANNUAL FALL FISH FRY WAS A PERFECT OUTING…

One could not have asked fora more perfect to do, fromstart to finish, as 50 membersof the Club gathered atRoosevelt State Park for theannual Fish Fry on September29th. For once there weremore old cars than newerones.

In addition to the great fishfried up by Bobby Bradley, thetrain of sides, desserts andsweets seemed endless. Thehush puppies, salads andveggies sides would be hardto match anywhere.

In one of the more sombermoments of the event, youreditor proposed renaming the

Fry “The Annual Paul CarltonMemorial Fish Fry” which wasmet with unanimous approval. Never missing a chance toraise a little money for theClub, Dawn Swehla managedto sell $122 worth of 50-50tickets. Yvonne Urban, wife ofJim, won the drawing andpromptly gave the $61 backto the club for a win winclosing.

By this time anticipation wasrunning high for the rumoredappearance of a travelingminstrel group who were toentertain with a spoof on thepopular movie “Oh, Brother,Where Art Thou.”

The resulting commotion byour own “Froggy Bottom Boys”has stirred talent scouts fromas far away as Hollywood, GAand dreams of Tinsel Town,RFD.

The quartet belted out threesongs from the popularcinema, before sashaying

through the audienceunmolested.

When the dust settled and theshow closed, audiencereaction was loud andprolonged, pleading for anencore. But alas, the troupehad disbanded and fled in a‘59 black Sunliner.

The only clue left was a notewhich flew from the shinyconvertible as it swooped overa hilltop, reading: “What theHell were we thinking…?”

The latest update says thelocal sheriff has issuedwarrants for the quartet andtheir producer, charging themwith bringing undue anddangerous pleasure to agroup whose hearts aren’tthat good anyway....Theculprits named were Bettyand Michelle Haven, MarieMobley and Dawn Swehla. Thelucky producer was EdSwehla, also MIA….

Jim Walter's elegant '40 Deluxe convertible...

Barbara Allen's superb cheese dip, slaved with Kahluah, was afavorite...

We were unable to put names with any players...your choice...

There’s still debate about what was let loose in this rhapsody...

MUTTERINGS AND MUSINGS FROM THE EDITOR…by Bill Wilson

Many of you reading thisknew Paul Carlton a lot betterand longer than I did. That’swhy I cherish the 10 yearsthat I knew and called him myfriend.

Paul left us suddenly andunexpectedly on September3rd. While he had beentreated in the last year or sofor some AFIB issues, no onethought he might be taken bya sudden heart attack.

Paul held a rare and covetedspot in our Club. He was everybody’s friend, totally clubsupportive and could be foundanytime, anywhere spoutingquick wit and a winning smile. He was a cornerstone in manyof the Club’s activities, particularly where it came tocooking with Bobby Bradley.

In speaking of Paul, Bobbysaid they had been friends formore than 30 years and not aday went by they didn’t talkbout something, even if itwas nothing. For years thetwo cooked chili at Roy

Watson’s place, fish at the fallFish Fry and hamburgers atthe annual auction atBradley’s. In between Clubactivities, Paul worked at hisleisure on two or three classicFords in his shop at Newnan. He learned old cars early andnever left them.

There was a poignant void asI watched Bobby Bradleyexpertly brown the fish andhush puppies at our annualevent just past. Paul wasn’tthere, but his spirit was, inthe hearts of everyone. I wasso glad to see Paul’s dearfriend, Geneva, smile gentlywhen the Club vowed torename the annual event “ThePaul Carlton Memorial FishFry.” I imagined if Paul hadphysically been with us, hewould have gotten a big kickout of the comedy spoof ouracting troupe put on, Oh,Brother, Where Fart Thou…?”

I last spoke with Paul at ourClub eat out at Newnan onAugust 18. He was his usualjovial self, enjoying catfish atGolden’s and then juantingover to a nearby ice creamshop. Hard to imagine just acouple of weeks later wewould say goodbye to a dearfriend. RIP, Paul.

Back here to reality, we hadonly a few cars able to makeit to Inman Farm HeritageDays but the Crofts, Haven’s,Mills, Youngblood and Allensdutifully put their old Fordsout there for view. I hope, inthe future, we might considerasking Rick to allocate us a

Page 5

space where we can all parktogether.

It was a huge, diverse andwell attended show. Congratsto Rick Minter and his groupfor their hard work.

I’m sure tickled to see someof our one time sick folks getback to our meetings. We sawthe great smiles of Alvin andPatsy Holt the first time in along time at the last sit down.

Also gracing us again wereCharlie and Connie King. Asweeter pair can’t be found. Ifwe can get Roy Watson andBilly East mended a littlebetter, we’ll clap for themagain soon. I did talk a fewminutes with both. Billy isfeeling a lot better after hisAugust surgery, (and actuallymade it to the Fish Fry withMiss Linda) but Roy is aboutstatus quo on his hip paineven after a second surgery insix months. I hope modernmedicine kicks in soon forhim.

I will miss our upcoming daytrip to Blue Ridge as I haveto feed the masses at anevent that weekend. I hopesomeone will take some picsfor us. It ought to be a fineand interesting tour. I hopeeveryone who can, will makethe event.

I’ve had several positivecomments about our series inThe Crankshaft frommembers and their favoriteold Fords. I’m ready to hearsome more stories. I knoweverybody’s got one. If youdon’t feel like writing it, callme, tell it to me and I’ll try tohelp put it in readable words.I hear stories about favoritecars every time there’s a faceto face among us. Surely we

can share them through ournewsletter. In the samegeneral vein, I am looking forcontributions by the Ladies forthe Ladies Eight columnrecently started. Recipes arenot the only timely subjects,as you well know.

Ladies Eight At our next Club meeting we’llconsider nominees for officersand Board members for thecoming year. A Boardmeeting has been scheduledby President Sam Thompsonon October 8th to name thenominating committee andset a slate for considerationfor 2019 officers.

All in all, we are rushingtoward the end of asuccessful and enjoyable yearfor the Club. We have a couplemore events to round out2018 in grand style. See youat IHOP on October 9…. BillWilson.-

Sharp Woman Driver

A young lady was driving through a built-up area at about 70 mph when she noticed a motorcycle policeman on her tail.

She increased her speed to 80 mph but the cop hung grimly on.

She put her foot down and pushed the car up to 90, drawing rapidly away from her pursuer.

Suddenly she saw a garage up ahead and with a squeal of brakes she pulled up in the forecourt and dashed into the ladies' room.

Five minutes later she emerged to find the motor-cycle policeman waiting for her. With a sweet smile she said, 'I bet you thought I wouldn’t make it in time....'

MY OLD FORD MAIN SQUEEZE...by Rick Minter

Editor’s note: Our friend and club member Rick Minter allows us to use a story from his old truck blog this month. Good story….

I’ve always been partial to 1969 Ford pickups. My dad bought one from Rufus Prayor when itwas a couple of years old. When he got anewer truck, I took over the ’69 and drove ituntil we hit one of the rough financial stretchesthat young couples often encounter. Duringthat time, Joanne sold that truck, deciding thatgroceries were a higher priority than asentimental old truck.

So, when I got a chance to acquire anotherone, I went for it.

I had an old Ford tractor that was just a jinx.Frank Carden had purchased a ’69 Ford thathad belonged to Brett Davis. I offered to trade, and Frank accepted. (I didn’t try to pull a fastone on Frank. He knew the full history of mytractor, having worked on it several times.)

The Davis family members are die-hard Blue

Oval folks.

Jerry worked at the Ford Assembly Plant inHapeville for 16 years, then in 1969 (anappropriate year for this story) he went to workfor his brother Edward at his dealership inFayetteville, the one that is now Allan VigilFord.

He stayed there until Edward sold thedealership in 1981, and he and Gene Hortonran a used car lot just up Ga. 85 from the Forddealership until 1986, when Jerry wasdiagnosed with a brain tumor that eventuallytook his life.

Jerry’s wife Harriett worked in the Ford partsdivision in East Point for 30 years. Bart workedthere too for 19 years and his wife Denise for16. And another uncle, Dean, had a Forddealership in Barnesville for 30 years.

When I got the truck, it was suffering from thetypical issues that come from sitting for years. The ethanol blend gasoline had turned the gastank into a tub of black goo. The fuel pumpwas shot, and the carburetor was gummed up,all due to that bad gas.

Roscoe Smith built the carburetor for me, ashe does for all my projects.

The alternator wasn’t charging, and after Ibought a new alternator and regulator I foundthat a bad wire was the problem allalong. Even after all that, the truck wouldn’tidle right when it warmed up. I consultedChester Plunkett, who is a pretty sharp Fordengine man.

We discovered a leaking intake gasket, so wechanged that and it ran great.

Maybe Joanne won’t ever have to sell this one.
