LAPID The bi-monthly newsletter of Congregation Agudas Achim August/September 2010 – Av/Elul/Tishrei 5770 Volume 3: Issue 6 2767 East Broad Street www.agudasachim.org (614) 237-2747 fax: (614) 237-3576 Bexley, Ohio 43209 Agudas Achim Welcomes Malachi! Congregation Agudas Achim is thrilled to welcome one of its own, Malachi Kanfer, who will serve as Cantor for the synagogue’s High Holiday Services. “Last spring, Malachi gave a recital in our chapel and those who attended walked away astounded by the strength and magnificence of his voice,” said Agudas Achim President Eric Finger- hut. “We look forward to Malachi carry- ing us through the beautiful melodies of the High Holiday services, promising all a “sweet” beginning to the NewYear.” Malachi Kanfer is entering his fourth year of vocal study at the Ober- lin Conservatory of Music, where he studies with Salvatore Cham- pagne. Since matriculating in 2007, he has performed many operatic roles, including Mr. Gobineau (Oberlin Opera Theater 2010) from The Medium, Betto (Oberlin in Italy 2009) from Gianni Schicchi and Figaro (Oberlin Opera Theater 2009) from Le Nozze di Figaro. Mr. Kanfer claims musical achievements outside of opera as well. A violin student for twelve years under Zoran Stoyanovitch and Beth Weingroff, he performed with the Columbus SymphonyYouth and Cadet Orchestras from 2005 to 2007. Further, Malachi Kanfer is an enthusiastic guitar player, studying classical and rock guitar under Kevin Holland for five years. He often plays and sings at coffee shops and bars in both Columbus and Oberlin. In his free time, Malachi scours political blogs, follows the Phila- delphia Phillies with, as he puts it, “phanatical” zeal and spends as much time as possible with his friends. He is a native of Bexley and lives only a half-block from Congregation Agudas Achim! The Red Tent, written by Anita Diamant

Her name is Dinah. In the Bible, her life is only hinted at in a brief and violent detour within the more familiar chapters of the Book of Genesis that tell of her father, Jacob, and his twelve sons.

Told in Dinah’s voice, Anita Diamant imagines the traditions and turmoil of ancient womanhood—the real world of the red tent. It begins with the story of the mothers – Leah, Rachel, Zilpah and Bilhah – the four wives of Jacob. They love Dinah and give her gifts that sustain her through child-hood, a calling to midwifery, and a new home in a foreign land. Dinah’s story reaches out from a remarkable period of early history and creates an intimate connection with the past.

Deeply affecting, The Red Tent combines rich storytelling with a valuable achievement in modern fiction: a new view of biblical women’s lives.
