HAPPENING THIS SHABBAT

Join us for our final Dessert in the Park

with ASBI of Summer 2016!

Shabbat afternoon, August 20, 4:00 PM

at Margaret Donahue Park: 1230 W. School St.

Friends, couples, families - everybody is invited!

Meet with other ASBI members and enjoy a Shabbat

afternoon outside. Bring blankets to sit on and cards,

Frisbees, or other games.

Everyone is encouraged to bring parve desserts that are nut-

free and conform to the ASBI Community Kashrut Standards.

PLEASE NOTE: If it is raining, the program is canceled.

This Shabbat, we welcome former member David Fain back to ASBI. He will deliver the sermon Shabbat morning (“The Ideal Relationship

with G-d: Moving from Fear to Reverence”), and teach a Shabbat afternoon shiur: “Internalizing Love and Reverence.”

David is a third-year Rabbinical student at Yeshivat Chovevei Torah. He is originally from Hamden, Connecticut. After studying in the Pardes Educators Program in Jerusalem, he lived in Lakeview for three years and attended ASBI. He now lives in Riverdale, New York with his wife and son and is grateful for the opportunity to come back to Chicago and learn Torah together.

HIGH HOLIDAY TICKETS

High Holiday ticket forms are now available!

1. YOU MUST SUBMIT A TICKET REQUEST FORM OR YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE HIGH HOLIDAY TICKETS. Tickets are required for everyone attending High Holiday services at ASBI. Due to the high volume of ticket requests, all requests—for either open or assigned seating—MUST be made by submitting a ticket request form. Please DO NOT call the shul office to make a ticket request over the phone.

2. BE IN GOOD STANDING BEFORE SUBMITTING YOUR REQUEST. We cannot process your request until you are in good standing. This means that at least half of your membership dues have been paid and you have no previous outstanding balances, or you have initiated a payment plan. If you need to request an adjusted dues amount, please fill out a Dues Adjustment Form (asbi.org/duesadjustment) and make at least a partial payment so that you can be in good standing.

3. CHOOSE THE CORRECT FORM AND SUBMIT IT BEFORE 4:00 PM ON MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 12. Links to all of the forms can be found at asbi.org/holidays. All forms can be filled out online, or you can download a PDF version of the form. Paper forms are available in the ASBI lobby. ASBI Members: please note that there are separate forms for open seating and assigned seating.

4. QUESTIONS? Learn more about High Holiday tickets, assigned seating, guest tickets, and more, at asbi.org/holidays. If you still have questions, please email [email protected].

GIVING OPPORTUNITIES

KOREN MACHZORIM IN 5777

ASBI is replacing our aging Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur machzorim with the machzorim that were published just a few years ago by Koren Publishers in Jerusalem, featuring the translation and commentary of former British chief rabbi, Rabbi Dr. Lord Jonathan Sacks. Koren's machzor enables English-speaking worshippers to connect in new ways to one of Judaism's oldest books. We invite you to honor your friends and loved ones and to support the spiritual life of the shul by dedicating one or more machzorim sets, or making a donation towards the purchase of machzorim.

Visit asbi.org/mahzor-5777.html to participate or learn more. This is a special opportunity to make an investment into the spiritual future of our congregation, as these new machzorim will be a tool for our prayers for years to come. Rosh Hashanah starts October 2, so be sure to make your dedication soon!

Volunteer with Maot Chitim As the holidays approach, Maot Chitim of Greater Chicago is looking for volunteers! If you are interested in putting together an ASBI group to work together, contact David Schwartz at [email protected]. Or, if you’d like to volunteer on your own, contact Maot Chitim directly at 847-674-3224 or [email protected].

Packaging Food – Sunday, September 18 Volunteers are needed to assemble boxes and to put non-perishable food items in the packages. All warehouse volunteers must be at least 12 years old.

Food Delivery – Sunday, September 25 Drivers are needed with trucks to deliver to multiple addresses in the city and suburbs, or driving a car, minivan or SUV to deliver to individuals and/or homes. Anyone and everyone, including singles and families with small children (no age restrictions), is invited to help out with the delivery of the packages.

UPCOMING EVENTS Mizmor Shir: Festive Kabbalat Shabbat & Ma'ariv for Shabbat Mevarchim Participate and be moved by Kabbalat Shabbat and Ma'ariv next Shabbat (and on the Friday night of every Shabbat Mevarchim), with added singing, added spirit, and added inspiration. Sparkling wine and cookies will send you out the door in

good spirits to spread the Shabbat joy!

ASBI MEMBERSHIP DUES If you haven’t already, now is the time to make arrangements for your yearly membership dues! To be in good standing, you must pay at least half of your

membership dues, initiate a payment plan, or submit a Dues Adjustment Form (asbi.org/duesadjustment).
