January 2011

Happy Holidays Everyone, I hope this newsletter finds you in good spirits and cheer! Thanks to all who came out to our November JPL Tour meeting! It was a very impressive tour indeed and no one left disappointed. It was such a great tour that my family and Brian Crisp’s family scheduled a tour for our kids and we were not disappointed. It was as great, if not better, then the first tour! If any of you missed this tour and would like to schedule your own tour then just go onto JPL’s website (http://www.jpl.nasa.gov) and click on Public Events. A big Thank You to Atul Mehta and Robert Hausmann with JPL in assist-ing with setting this meeting up! We really appreciate your support of our SMTA Chapter. It is mem-bers like you that make our chapter strong. I hope more of our members will be inspired to get more involved with our chapter! A review of this meeting begins on Page 6 of this newsletter. Our Annual 2010 Christmas party was a smashing success! It was held at the Irvine Marriot this year and the food was fabulous and the live entertainment was fantastic! Everyone who attended left the event full of Holiday Spirit. The live band, Casual Encounters Karaoke, kept the party rock-ing and no one was disappointed. We had the distinct pleasure of being serenaded by Matt Olson, who really started the ball rolling. Once he broke the ice then everyone was ready to get up and sing and what a blast we had! I had no idea we had so many members who can sing! Everyone kicked off their shoes and boogied down. If you need a live band for entertainment then Casual Encounters Karaoke will not disappoint! This was truly a memory making event! A review of this meeting begins on Page 8 of this newsletter. The election results are in! 10.7% of our members voted. Bill Macartney with Indium is our new Secretary. Welcome Bill! The rest of our board will remain the same. We bid farewell to Mi-chelle Ogihara as she ventures off to work for SMTA National. We hope she can make it out to our meetings still! Our January 20th, 2011 CTP will be held at THINK Together in Santa Ana, CA. The Chap-ter Training Program fee of $200(members)/$275(non-members; includes 1 year SMTA membership) includes a Continental Breakfast and a Hot Lunch. Head In Pillow Review & Reduction

PRESENTED BY Jasbir Bath President

Bath and Associates Consultancy LLC http://www.bathtechnicalconsultancy.com

PRESENTATION ABSTRACT Over the last few years, there has been an increase in the rate of Head-in-Pillow component soldering defects. The issue has occurred across a

broad segment of industries including consumer, telecom and military. There are many reasons for this issue such as warpage issues of the component or board, ball co-planarity issues for BGA/CSP components and non-wetting of the component based on contamination or exces-sive oxidation of the component coating. The presentation will cover some of the work done on development of tin-lead and lead-free solder

pastes to help to reduce the head-in-pillow defect. It will also review some of the other causes of the Head-in-Pillow defect such as printed sol-der paste volume, component placement and reflow profile used and assess work in the industry on this area as well as a review of developing

industry standards/ programs related to this issue.

SPEAKER PROFILE Jasbir Bath is a Consulting Engineer for Christopher Associates/ Koki Solder in the Americas. He is the owner of Bath and Associates Consul-tancy LLC which provides consulting and training services in the electronics manufacturing industry. He is an INEMI Consultant working on

the INEMI lead-free rework optimization project and is currently the President of the SMTA Silicon Valley chapter. He was the Corporate Lead Engineer with Solectron Corporation and Flextronics International for 10 years with a role involving tin-lead and lead-free solder process

development.

Tips for Dispensing - New Materials Improve an Old Process

PRESENTED BY Frank Murch

President Orange County Instruments http://www.dispensetips.com

PRESENTATION ABSTRACT The designs, construction and materials used to make dispensing needles date back to the first medical injections in the mid 1800s1. Most of

the current designs date back at least 20 years, with many designs being much older. The electronic assembly industry uses dispensing needles based off very dated assumptions and biases. This paper examines these assumptions and biases then offers changes resulting in major perform-ance improvements. By changing 1) Dispense tip materials - Ceramic is a much more durable material than stainless steel.2) Internal Shapes -

Dispense tip optimize the flow of viscous materials by using a conical shape, 3) Manufacturing techniques - the construction is one piece, eliminating the transitions and is molded vs. machined, allowing for better quality and consistency. These changes result in lower internal valve

pressures, better flow dynamics and a better dispense. In turn, these changes lead to a better dispense quality, less cleaning and less cost.

SPEAKER PROFILE Frank Murch is the President of OCI Materials, which is headquartered in Vista, CA. Frank has over 20 years of broad management experience

in the electronics industry, with a technical focus on dispensing systems and materials for semiconductor and circuit assembly operations. Frank earned his B.S. in Physics and Japanese Studies at the University of Colorado, Boulder; his M.S. in Software Engineering from Penn

State University, Great Valley; and his MBA in Marketing from California State University, San Marcos. Frank also earned a BS in BS with on-the-job training; he likes cars, will sunburn like anybody’s business, and can always get you the best table at Harbor Fish in Carlsbad.

TOUR MEETING REVIEWTOUR MEETING REVIEW

6

The LA/OC SMTA November tour meeting started out at Round Table pizza in La Canada Flintridge where everyone enjoyed some delicious pizza and wonderful networking. Round Table has some of the most delicious pizza’s and no one left the venue hun- gry or disappointed in their new found business a c q u a i n t a n c e s . Immediately after lunch the tour group convoyed over to JPL.

Shortly after we were all checked in we headed over to the Von Karmen Auditorium where we were given a presentation on the history of JPL and the scientists who played a huge part in starting JPL.

7

JPL has developed some the most incredible space exploration systems and many have far exceeded the expec-tations of the scientists themselves. JPL Deep Space program is a mass of satellites orbiting space and gathering sci-entific data for scientists to study and many of the images these satellites provide are used in school books today. Replica models of these satellites are on display for all to view as well as a viewing area over the Clean Room where we were able to observe the new Mars Lander that is being assem- bled.

There were a group of scientists students at Cal Tech who were continually blowing up the labs, so they were asked to leave the campus. They found a dry river bed not far from the campus to test their Jet Rockets and soon the army heard of this group of scientists who were developing great ideas for Jet Propulsion and Rockets. Before they knew it they had a contract with the military to develop specialized rockets and JPL was born. JPL eventually had the choice of becoming part of NASA, a Federal Agency, or continue as a Military contrac-tor. Of course this is only a brief synopsis of the history of JPL. If you want to hear the real deal then sign up for a tour at JPL.

The tentative launch for this new Lander will be in March 2011. Check out JPL’s website if you want the exact date.

If you missed this tour and would like to schedule your own tour then please visit http://www.jpl.nasa.gov

LA/OC SMTA Member ProfileLA/OC SMTA Member Profile

Kathy Palumbo, CEO & Founder, of Production Analysis and Learning Services LLC has been in the elec-

tronic industry for over 25 years. Prior to starting Production Analysis and Learning Services LLC, she worked as a Manu-

facturing & Industrial Engineering Manager at Viking Components, Inc. Kathy graduated from DeVry Institute of Technol-

ogy (Phx, AZ) in 1985 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electronic Engineering Technology. She began her career at

General Dynamics, Pomona Division, as a Test and Manufacturing Engineer. In 1989 she continued her career at ITT, Gil-

fillian Division, as a Test Engineer, and in the 90’s went on to work for Computer Science Corporation as a Systems Engi-

neer on the B2 bomber project. In 1994 she began working for DPAC as a Sr. Manufacturing Engineer and in 1996 started

working for Viking Components. This was an exciting time to work for Viking. The company grew from 20 employees to

over 600, the manufacturing capacity grew from 2 to 15 lines (10K to 60K sq feet), and the Manufacturing & Industrial En-

gineering department grew from two to twenty-two.

Kathy became a certified IPC trainer in 1996 and a Master Instructor (MIT) for the IPC-A-610 & 600 documents in
