LANYON CHRISTMAS CAROLS

1. JINGLE BELLSWords & Music by James Pierpont

Dashing through the snow In a one-horse open sleigh, O’er the fields we go, Laughing all the way; Bells on bob-tail ring, Making spirits bright; What fun it is to ride and sing A sleighing song tonight.Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way, Oh, what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh!

Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way, Oh, what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh!

Now the ground is white, Go it while you’re young! Take the girls tonight, And sing this sleighing song. Just get a bobtailed bay, Two-forty for his speed. Then hitch him to an open sleigh And crack! You’ll take the lead.

Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way, Oh, what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh! Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way, Oh, what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh!

2. JOY TO THE WORLD! THE LORD IS COMEWords by Isaac Watts Music by George F. Handel, arranged by Lowell Mason

Joy to the world! the Lord is come; Let earth receive her King; Let every heart prepare Him room, And heaven and nature sing. And heaven and nature sing And heaven, and heaven and nature sing

Joy to the world! the Saviour reigns; Let men their songs employ;

While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains, Repeat the sounding joy Repeat the sounding joy Repeat, repeat the sounding joy.

He rules the world with truth and grace, And makes the nations prove The glories of His righteousness, And wonders of His love And wonders of His love And wonders, and wonders of His love.

3. SILENT NIGHT! HOLY NIGHT!Words by Joseph Mohr Music by Franz X Gruber

Silent night! Holy night! All is calm, all is bright Round yon virgin mother and child Holy infant so tender and mild Sleep in heavenly peace Sleep in heavenly peace.

Silent night! Holy night! Shepherds quake at the sight! Glories stream from heaven afar, Heavenly hosts sing, “Allelulia!” Christ, the Saviour, is born! Christ, the Saviour, is born!

Silent night! Holy night! Son of God, love’s pure light! Radiant beams from Thy holy face With the dawn of redeeming grace, Jesus Lord, at Thy birth. Christ, the Savior, is born!

4. THE HOLY CITYWords by FE Weatherly Music by S Adams

Last night I lay asleeping, there came a dream so fair, I stood in old Jerusalem beside the temple there. I heard the children singing, and ever as they sang, Me thought the voice of angels from heav’n in answer rang; Me thought the voice of angels from heav’n in answer rang.

Jerusalem! Jerusalem! Lift up your gates and sing, Hosanna in the highest! Hosanna to your King!

LANYON CHRISTMAS CAROLS

And then me thought my dream was changed, the streets no longer rang, Hush’d were the glad hosannas the little children sang. The sun grew dark with mystery, the morn was cold and chill As the shadow of a cross arose upon a lonely hill, As the shadow of a cross arose upon a lonely hill.

Jerusalem! Jerusalem! Hark! How the angels sing, Hosanna in the highest! Hosanna to your King!

And once again the scene was changed, new earth there seemed to be, I saw the Holy City beside the tideless sea; The light of God was on its streets, the gates were open wide, And all who would might enter, and no-one was denied. No need of moon or stars by night, or sun to shine by day, It was the new Jerusalem that would not pass away, It was the new Jerusalem that would not pass away.

Jerusalem! Jerusalem! Sing for the night is o’er! Hosanna in the highest, Hosanna for evermore! Hosanna in the highest, Hosanna for evermore!

5. AWAY IN A MANGERTraditional, arranged by Leslie R Bell

Away in a manger, no crib for His bed, The little Lord Jesus laid down His sweet head: The stars in the bright sky looked down where He lay,

The little Lord Jesus, asleep on the hay. The cattle are lowing, the poor babe awakes, But little Lord Jesus, no crying he makes. I love Thee, Lord Jesus, look down from the sky, And stay by my cradle till morning is nigh.

Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask Thee to stay Close by me forever, and love me, I pray. Bless all the dear children in thy tender care, And fit us for heaven to live with Thee there.

6. RUDOLF THE RED-NOSED REINDEERWords & Music by Jonny Marks

You know Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen, Comet and Cupid and Donner and Blitzen, But do you recall the most famous reindeer of all?

Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer had a very shiny nose, And if you ever saw it, you would even say it glows. All of the other reindeer used to laugh and call him names. They never let poor Rudolph join in any reindeer games.

Then one foggy Christmas, Eve Santa came to say, ‘Rudolph with your nose so bright, Won’t you guide my sleigh tonight?

Then how the reindeer loved him, As they shouted out with glee: ‘Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer, You’ll go down in history!’

7. CAROL OF THE BIRDSWords by John Wheeler Music by William G James

Out on the plains the brolgas are dancing Lifting their feet like war horses prancing: Up to the sun the woodlarks go winging Faint in the dawn light echoes their singing Orana! Orana! Orana! To Christmas Day.

Down where the tree-ferns grow by the river, There where the waters sparkle and quiver, Deep in the gullies Bell-birds are chiming, Softly and sweetly their lyric notes rhyming Orana! Orana! Orana! To Christmas Day.

Friar-birds sip the nectar of flowers, Currawongs chant in wattle-tree bowers In the blue ranges Lorikeets calling Carols of bushlands rising and falling Orana! Orana! Orana! To Christmas Day.

LANYON CHRISTMAS CAROLS

8. THE THREE DROVERSWords by John Wheeler Music by William G James

Across the plains one Christmas night, Three drovers riding blythe and gay, Looked up and saw a starry light, More radiant than the Milky Way; And on their hearts such wonder fell, They sang with joy “Noel! Noel! Noel! Noel! Noel!”

The air was dry with Summer heat And smoke was on the yellow Moon; But from the Heavens, faint and sweet, Came floating down a wond’rous tune And as they heard, they sang full well, Those drovers three “Noel! Noel! Noel! Noel! Noel!”

The black swans flew across the sky, The wild dog called across the plain, The starry lustre blazed on high, Still echoed on the Heavenly strain; And still they sang “Noel! Noel!” Those drovers three “Noel! Noel! Noel! Noel! Noel!”

9. O LITTLE TOWN OF BETHLEHEMWords by Phillips Brooks Music by Lewis H Redner

O little town of Bethlehem, How still we see thee lie; Above thy deep and dreamless sleep The silent stars go by: Yet in thy dark streets shineth The everlasting Light; The hopes and fears of all the years Are met in thee tonight.

For Christ is born of Mary; And gathered all above, While mortals sleep, the angels keep Their watch of wond’ring love. O morning stars, together Proclaim the holy birth; And praises sing to God, the King, And peace to men on earth.

How silently, how silently, The wondrous gift is giv’n! So God imparts to human hearts

The blessings of His heaven. No ear may hear His coming, But in this world of sin, Where meek souls will receive Him still, The dear Christ enters in.

O holy Child of Bethlehem, Descend to us, we pray; Cast out our sins, and enter in, Be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels The great glad tidings tell; O come to us, abide with us, Our Lord Emmanuel!

10. IT’S BEGINNING TO LOOK A LOT LIKE CHRISTMASWords & Music by Meredith Wilson

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, ev’rywhere you go; Take a look in the five and ten, glistening once again, With candy canes and silver lanes aglow.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, toys in every store. But the prettiest sight to see is the holly that will be On your own front door.

A pair of hop-a-long boots and a pistol that shoots Is the wish of Barney and Ben; Dolls that will talk and will go for a walk Is the hope of Janice and Jen; And Mum and Dad can hardly wait for school to start again.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, ev’rywhere you go; There’s a tree in the grand hotel, one in the park as well, The sturdy kind that doesn’t mind the snow.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, soon the bells will start, And the thing that will make them ring is the carol that you sing Right within your heart.

LANYON CHRISTMAS CAROLS

11. THE WATTLE CAROLWords by D. Waterhouse Sung to the tune of O’Tannenbaum

Fair wattle tree, our Christmas tree In bushland’s hushed serenity Your golden blooms like candles glow You light the land we cherish so Fair wattle tree, our Christmas tree The light of love for all to see Fair wattle tree, our Christmas tree In bushland’s hushed serenity

Fair wattle tree, our Christmas tree Extol the joys of harmony Your feathered leaves like dove wings bring A song of peace for all to sing Fair wattle tree, our Christmas tree Your message is tranquillity Fair wattle tree, our Christmas tree Extol the joys of harmony

Fair wattle tree, our Christmas tree Beneath the tall gums canopy Your fragrance fills the summer air Rejoicing voices rise in prayer Fair wattle tree, our Christmas tree Symbol of peace forever be Fair wattle tree, our Christmas tree Beneath the tall gums canopy

12. THE BUSH CHRISTMASWords by D. Waterhouse Sung to the tune of Louise

There’s a summer sound in the bushland to-day. Grasshoppers click, and the cicadas play – Drums under wings, a ground cricket sings It’s Christmas, Christmas.

Hear the humming bees in the flowering gum Gold beetles flash in the shimmering sun Drone drowsy fly, as Bell-birds on high Ring Christmas, Christmas.

Jesus said “Be still”, hear the song of the land Cherish the earth and the little bush band. Play creatures play, merrily say It’s Christmas, to-day.

13. JINGLE BELL ROCKWords & Music by Joe Beal and Jim Boothe

Jingle bell, jingle bell, jingle bell rock, Jingle bell swing and jingle bells ring. Snowin’ and blowin’ up bushels of fun; Now the jingle hop has begun.

Jingle bell, jingle bell, jingle bell rock, Jingle bells chime in jingle bell time, Dancin’ and prancin’ in Jingle bell Square In the frosty air.

What a bright time, it’s the right time to rock the night away. Jingle bell time is a swell time to go glidin’ in a one-horse sleigh.

Giddy-ap, jingle horse, pick up your feet, jingle around the clock. Mix and mingle in a jinglin’ beat, that’s the jingle bell rock.

Repeat

Second time ending: That’s the jingle bell, that’s the jingle bell, that’s the jingle bell rock.

14. WE THREE KINGS OF ORIENT AREWords & Music by John Henry Hopkins Jr.

We three kings of Orient are, Bearing gifts we traverse afar Field and fountain, moor and mountain, Following yonder star.

O star of wonder, star of night Star with royal beauty bright, Westward leading, still proceeding, Guide us to thy perfect light.

Born a King on Bethlehem’s plain, Gold I bring to crown Him again, King forever, ceasing never Over us all to reign. Frankincense to offer have I, Incense owns a Deity nigh; Prayer and praising, all men raising, Worship Him, God on high.

Myrrh is mine; its bitter perfume Breathes a life of gathering gloom;

O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant, O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem! Come and behold Him, born the King of Angels!

Lish Fejer, 666 ABC Radio Lish Fejer is a broadcaster on 666 ABC Canberra, and she is our master of ceremonies for this event.

Before finding her voice in radio, Lish worked in the field of science communication as a TV presenter, speaker, writer and exhibition developer. She joined the ABC Radio Canberra team in 2010 but still spends much if of her spare time encouraging sustainability through her DIY energy efficiency home improvement website Green It Yourself. Lish rides a bike, bakes interactive cakes, does science experiments at parties (she met her husband when she fired a scone out of a potato cannon), has over 15,000 worms and loves Canberra. As a broadcaster with 666 ABC Canberra she is regularly out and about collecting stories in the community or sharing them on air.

Daniel Wells + Sing Australia Daniel is conducting the Sing Australia Choir. He has been involved with this event for a number of years.

Singing has the power to connect us all in a positive and happy way. There can be no better time than Christmas with family or friends all around to sing our hearts out and to be encouraging of each other. The human voice in all its differences came a very long time before the written music and the formal structures that now make people feel incapable of singing. Sing in the way you know how. Just go for it! It’s your voice – own it. Your voice together with others comes together in a unified beauty of sound. It is great to have the men and boys come out of the crowd to join the Sing Australia blokes and it’s fabulous when the women and the girls from the audience join the Sing Australia ladies. A big favourite for many years is when the children sing. All of this is the real magic of the Carols at Lanyon.

Sing Australia has been promoting this approach to singing for a long time now. Since it was founded by Colin Slater OAM in 1985, the organisation has attracted in excess of 12,000 members, given over 22,000 community performances, and had 24 national gatherings and 32 overseas tours. Through its inclusive membership and its performances it has been a powerful and positive influence in the lives of many thousands of people – particularly those who are lonely, those who grieve,

those who are confronting serious illnesses, and those who have disabilities.

Sing Australia is open to everyone. It is easy to join. Check out the website: www.singaustralia.com.au

Linus Hanul Lee Linus is our soloist for this event. He came to Canberra from Seoul in South Korea in 2012. Linus learned piano from the age of six in Korea. Here in Canberra he is accompanying the Harmonie German Choir, the Austrian Choir and the Sing Australia Majura Choir, and plays the organ at different Catholic and Uniting Church congregations around Canberra.

Linus has completed a BA in International Relations at the ANU, and has been studying classical piano at the ANU School of Music since 2016.

Adam Powers + The Tuggeranong Valley Band The Tuggeranong Valley Band, established in 1980, brings together brass, woodwind and percussion players who share a love of making music. They rehearse in Namadgi School in Kambah on Thursday evenings between 6.00 and 9.30pm under the able direction of our conductors Nick Woods and Adam Powers. They have two bands: the Intermediate Band for those just starting on their musical journey, those perhaps taking up their instruments after many years, or even those trying out a new instrument - conducted by Nick and; a Concert Band for more experienced players conducted by Adam. They play a wide repertoire, ranging from movie scores, jazz, popular through to classical music. New players are always welcome, no audition required. You can check them out at www.tvband.org.au or on Facebook. Why not try them out - playing in a band is a great musical experience.

Smiths Road Fire Brigade The Smiths Road Fire Brigade represents the Smiths Road community in New South Wales, just a few kilometres south of Tharwa, bordered by the Namadji National Park to the west and by the Murrumbidgee to the east with the main access to Canberra through Tharwa. The Smiths Road area was severely affected by the 2003 bushfires and as a consequence action was taken to establish our own Rural Fire Brigade, which came into being in August 2004.

The Smiths Road community comprises over 50 households and around 150 persons. The Brigade has over 60 members, most of whom are trained to fight bushfires in the area including the southern ACT and New South Wales. The main sources of funding to enable the Brigade to meet its responsibilities are donations and fundraising activities.

St John Ambulance Tonight’s special event is supported by the St John Ambulance (ACT) who will provide valuable first aid support to our guests. St John is a self-funded charity working for the service of humanity and has been providing first aid to the Australian community for the past 125 years. For all enquiries about training, volunteering or donations, please call 6282 2399.

Eclipse Lighting and Sound Eclipse Lighting and Sound has been successfully providing audio, lighting, staging and LED screens up and down the east coast of Australia for over 18 years. Chris Neal and his employees have built a company that is recognised for their high quality of work and friendly approach to the job. Their inventory and expertise is growing annually and they are currently working on some of the biggest festivals in Australia including: Tamworth Country Music Festival, the International Children’s Games and the National Folk Festival.

Eclipse has been working on the Lanyon Christmas Carols for the past few years and are once again looking forward to seeing some friendly faces and singing along to the carols!
