Why Land use transformation
o Vast areas of hilly farm lands legally owned o Other approaches like watershed development, mass mobilization,
safety net public works and NGO initiatives mostly focus on communal lands
o Post harvest open grazing problems o Visible land degradation impacts o The impacts brought by resources allocated in land rehabilitation
interventions o Livelihood sources of vulnerable people compromised for the
approaches.
The possible way out q Land use transformation through temporary compensation q Beneficiaries with high risk score identified from our Risk Assessment findings q Agreement reached with 10 beneficiaries on Share of resources and responsibilities q Beneficiaries:
Ø Share free labour and carry all the tasks as per the agreed bylaws
q Project : Ø Resource availability for area rehabilitation Ø Avail budget for the temporary compensation: For 10 farmers = 588 Euro/ha/ yr / which is only 176.4 Euro per farmer for three years. Ø Technical support
q Local government: part of the whole process
Results achieved q Better quality physical structures q Incredible survival and performance rates of seedlings and grass splits q Run-off erosion totally controlled q Better sense of ownership q Biomass from grass and legumes q Bee keeping integrated, capacity built q Income diversified / sheep breeding, sheep fattening, apiary and looking for other options/. q Income of all beneficiaries have improved a lot q Shared their experience to others
