On this uniquely immersive, highly

social land and sea expedition, led

by Lindblad founder and president

Sven Lindblad, we’ll experience

Iceland’s stunning coastal and

inland geography, and hang out

with a changing cast of interesting Icelanders. Join

us for great conversation and exclusively curated

experiences—from performances arranged by our

onboard musicologist, to a dinner prepared by

Iceland’s top chef on a private island.

Each day team members will help you choose from

a menu of active options: discover the dynamic

geology of Reykjavík’s Golden Circle, ride a sturdy

Icelandic horse, explore Reykjavík, go mountain

biking, challenge yourself with a cooking class,

visit a cutting-edge geothermal plant, or even go

heli-hiking. Our expedition team will orchestrate

casual drinks-and-dinner contexts with Icelandic

artists, musicians, political figures, scientists,

writers and more. We’ll enjoy conversation and

performances by some of Iceland’s most inspired

musicians, arranged by our ethnomusicologist

Jacob Edgar, host of NPR’s Music Voyager.

A short flight from New York City, Iceland feels

like another world; just south of the Arctic Circle

and bathed by the

Gulf Stream, it’s

volcanically active

and geologically awe-

inspiring. Volcanoes

spill onto massive

glaciers, geysers burst

not far from gushing

waterfalls, the earth

gurgles with mud

pots and aquamarine

hot springs—and a

people known for their

independence and

innovation produce

great art and cutting-edge ideas. A rare kind of

travel opportunity.

We’re filling in the details of this innovative new

expedition now. We encourage you to book soon

to avoid disappointment. But if you need more info

to decide, sign up at expeditions.com/hangout to

receive email updates.

HIGHLIGHTSª Explore remote Hornstrandir,

where wildflower-speckled

meadows blanket the tops

of dramatic coastal cliffs that

drop precipitously to secluded

beaches. Take advantage of

the midnight sun to go whale

watching, birding, or hiking, and

visit charming fishing villages

tucked in along the shore.

ª Thrill to the juxtaposition of

Viðey Island’s ancient ruins

and early Christian architecture

with large-scale contemporary

works by sculptor Richard Serra

(the Milestones project) and

artist Yoko Ono (Imagine Peace

Tower). Cap off the day with a

private dinner at the Nordic-

prize winning Gallery Restaurant,

prepared exclusively for us by

head chef Friðgeir Ingi Eiríksson.

ª Experience close encounters

with the spray of Gullfoss

waterfall, the steam of Geysir

hot springs and other geological

wonders of Reykjavík’s famed

Golden Circle, all in the company

of our expert expedition team.

DATE: JULY 15, 2015 | 2 NIGHTS IN REYKJAVÍK/

3 NIGHTS ABOARD NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC EXPLORER

DAY 1, JULY 15 MORNING: Your overnight flight from the U.S. arrives ear-ly in Reykjavík, the world’s northernmost capital city. Let the city present itself through glimpses of high mountains and colorful, Scandinavian-style buildings. We are met by our hosts and whisked away for breakfast as we hear about today’s exciting options. Note: for those who wish to go directly to our hotel, we can reserve your room for the previous night at additional charge.

AFTERNOON: Choose an exhilarating hike or bicycle ride amid the volcanic landscapes and natural hot springs of the Reykjanes peninsula and visit the tiny fishing village of Grindavík. Or take a specially-arranged soak in the soothing geothermal waters of the iconic Blue Lagoon, with a stroll around its fascinating lava-shaped landscape.

LATE AFTERNOON: After lunch at the Reykjavík restau-rant, check into the Borg Hotel or the adjacent sister property, the Apotek Hotel, and enjoy the views from your window. Meet our two exclusive Icelandic concierges, who help you plan the rest of your day’s explorations and handle your dinner reservations at one of the many fine restaurants within walking distance of our hotel.

COCKTAIL HOUR: Gather for a welcome cocktail.

EVENING Unwind and explore one of Reykjavík’s fine restaurants on your own tonight. Later, you may wish to stop for a nightcap, or check out the local music scene with our musicologist, Jacob Edgar.

5 NIGHT LAND & SEA:

DAY 2, JULY 16MORNING Wake up to fresh juice, tea/coffee and pastries, or a hearty Icelandic breakfast.

LATE MORNING & AFTERNOON Encounter Iceland’s nature in all its wildness among the geological wonders of the Golden Circle. Feel the spray of thundering Gullfoss falls, wander the steaming landscape of Geysir and see its amazing spout. With our expert guides, visit the ancient, open-air parliament at Thingvellir National Park. Or, you may want to consult our concierge for recommendations on independent city exploration.

EVENING Tonight, a special treat: ride a ferry across the harbor to scenic Viðey Island, where an exclusive dinner in a historic house awaits. One of Iceland’s most famous chefs, Friðgeir Ingi Eiríksson, will cater our dinner and, together with our Icelandic guests, we will have a concert of both ancient and modern music. This evening will be memorable!

ICELAND HANGOUT

Page 6: LAND & SEA: ICELAND HANGOUT - Lindblad Expeditions · HANGOUT On this uniquely immersive, highly social land and sea expedition, led by Lindblad founder and president Sven Lindblad,

DAY 3, JULY 17MORNING Breakfast at your leisure in your hotel’s dining room. Linger.

LATE MORNING/AFTERNOON Follow your interests today with a choice of excursions. A variety of options will be made available to you before your arrival. Walk around historic Reykjavík, including the National Museum and the Museum of Whales, with a knowl-edgeable guide. Or delve into Icelandic cuisine with a cooking class and lunch at the Salt Kitchen. The more active may go mountain biking or horseback riding, or even heli-hiking (this is the only activity that comes at an additional cost, but is an adrenaline-pump-ing, high adventure opportunity.) The options are multiple, and our concierge can recommend and facilitate activities that suit you.

LATE AFTERNOON Embark the intimate National Geographic Explorer and settle into your comfortable cabin. Take some time to explore the public spaces, the Observation Lounge and the Library.

COCKTAIL HOUR Gather with your fellow travelers and several special guests for a reception in the ship’s Lounge. Meet your Captain and his Officers, and the expedition team. Dinner is aboard ship this evening.

LATE EVENING The National Geographic Explorer will remain at the pier in Reykjavík until late to give you the opportunity to go ashore, explore more, or participate in what many suggest is some of the most vibrant nightlife on the planet.

DAY 4, JULY 18MORNING “Good morning, Good morning.” Our wake-up call alerts us that we are underway and that breakfast is now served.

LATE MORNING/AFTERNOON National Geographic Explorer navigates Iceland’s wild western frontier coastline today, sailing beneath the immense Látrabjarg cliffs, home to a huge population of razorbills. The cliffs were once famous for egg collecting; men were tied to ropes and lowered down onto the ledges like spiders. Continue to the island of Flatey for walks around this scenic, centuries-old island trading post, and take a Zodiac cruise along the coast.

COCKTAIL HOUR Join Sven Lindblad, our Icelandic guests, and the expedition team for cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and a Lindblad tradition called “recap,” to review the day’s highlights and preview tomorrow’s plans.

DINNER Gather in the main Dining Room or the more intimate Bistro Bar for dinner tonight. Share a private table for two, or a convivial table of ten of your interesting shipmates. There is no assigned seating for easy mingling.

LATE EVENING Our onboard musicologist Jacob Edgar curates another eclectic and extraordinary live performance of Icelandic music.

DAY 5, JULY 19MORNING Breakfast at your leisure in the Dining Room.

LATE MORNING/AFTERNOON Just south of the Arctic Circle, the Hornstrandir peninsula is Iceland’s northernmost and most remote—a spectacular, uninhabited nature reserve only accessible on foot or by boat. Hiking here in the summertime is magical; and 24 hours of daylight allow for great wildlife viewing, from whales and Arctic foxes to puffins, guillemots, and kittiwakes.

COCKTAIL HOUR Meet us in the lounge for conversation and a presentation on anything from the endearing puffin to the role Iceland will play in mapping the Arctic’s future.

EVENING Dinner is served.

LATE EVENING Unwind in the Lounge, mingle with your fellow travelers and special guests, and go out on deck for the tonic of sea air. Enjoy live musical entertainment by local Icelandic artists arranged by Jacob Edgar.

DAY 6, JULY 20EARLY MORNING After breakfast, disembark our ship in Reykjavík and drive to the airport for an early morning flight home. Or we encourage you to take a later flight and continue exploring with us.

LATE MORNING/AFTERNOON Before your departure, follow your whim. Opt for a cultural tour of Reykjavík, seeing the National and Saga Museums if you haven’t already, and more. Or wander among the bubbling mud pools and hot springs at the Hellisheidi Geothermal Plant; stop at a farm to see and photograph Icelandic horses. Or spend your day like a local: stroll around Harpa, sample some of Iceland’s best street food, and feed the ducks at the pond. Our concierges will provide other options including a design and art tour, a tasting tour, and a self-guided walking tour.

DEPARTURE For those who are leaving later in the day, lunch and your transport to the airport are included.
