Cumulus director and chief architect Peter Walker said his starting point was Lady Gowrie’s position statement: children first. “For me it was about remembering myself as a child and the sense of play, as well as dealing pragmatically with how the centre would function, the functionality of the building,” Mr Walker said. “We had to make it fit its function, just as we have done with tourism developments like Pumphouse Point and Willie Smith’s Apple Shed — it’s all about the experience, the user’s experience. In tourism development and design, it’s about being able to generate long-term memories after that experience … and I think it’s the same for a child in this integrated centre.” Mr Walker said the other design factor was the size of the site, stretching from Macquarie St to Davey St, with five levels in between. “We wanted to use the existing building fabric, the former automotive showroom and workshop, to develop both indoor and outdoor play spaces for the children, with early education spaces, as well as the staff administration and training rooms. “As well, there had to be a natural interaction between children and staff, to create spaces where children and adults could both inhabit and interact.” Mr Walker said Cumulus and builders Fairbrother received great collaboration from Lady Gowrie Tasmania. “It was essential that the children’s space was at the front of the building and that the children’s spaces should be the best spaces within the whole complex. “At the very front there is a play space. In fact, adults walking into the centre are observed by the children. They watch them coming and going. Giant building blocks promise the THE most striking aspect of Lady Gowrie Tasmania’s new $7.5 million Integrated Centre for Children & Families in South Hobart is its sheer size — stretching from Macquarie St through to Davey St. The space allows Lady Gowrie to introduce its “through the looking glass” childcare model that reduces transitions in early education and care. Lady Gowrie Tasmania chief Ros Cornish said there would be two groupings — birth to three-year and three- plus and a multipurpose child- friendly area. “A long-term research project by Lady Gowrie in South Australia shows less transition leads to more positive outcomes for children — they remain with their siblings and family groupings for longer and build stronger attachments and relationships with the same educators,” she said. The other striking effect of the multi-award-winning Cumulus Studio’s design is the external and internal wood panelling, which gives the centre its “building block” effect. The different levels connect effortlessly from entrance, reception, upstairs to offices and through to the ingenious, and huge, indoor play centre and early education spaces. A feature of the play centre is the giant sand pit, art studio, “mudroom”, and slide that will captivate children. “Lady Gowrie is committed to a play-based curriculum as young children learn through play,” Ms Cornish said. “It is experimenting through play in safe places, being educated and cared for by early childhood educators who know and understand them that enables children to grow and develop.” The new centre is adjacent to the Southern Outlet and the Kingborough municipality and beyond and is easily accessible to parents who work in Hobart’s CBD. “We want the centre to become a community hub, not just for South Hobart, but beyond,” Ms Cornish said. Developing its support services is a key aim at the centre. “When families come to access support services, all the facilities will be available to their children, so families can receive support and counselling in confidential and non-threatening environment. “The South Hobart centre will improve the outcomes for these people, from starting little people on their educational journey, to helping parents in their important parenting role and training early childhood educators — not just Lady Gowrie staff, but across the sector.” Lady Gowrie Tasmania will base its state headquarters at the centre, as well as administer family day care, long day care, preschool and outside school programs services from the site. Ms Cornish said the centre will include early childhood education and care for 48 children from birth to age five. The education and care team hold formal qualifications in early childhood education and care and the centre manager holds an early childhood specific degree. “Our training rooms are designed for education and care sector training and professional development, as well as meetings and hire by the general public. We also have two consulting rooms for visiting allied professionals and private meetings with clients and community members.” TEST PILOTS: Children have plenty of fun trying out the slide and playgrounds in the new centre. Care and support for familiesFOR more than 75 years, Lady Gowrie Tasmania has provided education and care for young children and support for families.

The first Lady Gowrie was established in Tasmania at the Battery Point site in 1939. Early education and child care is the cornerstone of the organisation — its position statement being “Children First”.

Lady Gowrie TasmaniaCEO Ros Cornish said the organisation was proudly not-for-profit, governed by a skills-based, voluntary board of directors. Lady Gowrie Tasmania is a socially responsible organisation demonstrated through a range of community initiatives and by reinvesting any surplus back into services and communities.

“Lady Gowrie employs more than 350 staff statewide and contributes $18 million in turnover to the Tasmanian economy,” Ms Cornish said.

“Gowrie promotes the best outcomes for children, families and early and middle childhood professionals. Such outcomes are far-reaching

beyond those required by compliance and regulations. We provide quality early and middle

childhood education and care services forchildren frombirth to 12years of agethroughcentrebasedchild care, family daycare, outsideschool hourscare, occasionalcare andpreschoolprograms.

PLAY SPACE: Lady Gowrie Tasmania’s new Integrated Centre for Children & Families in South Hobart.

“The centrepiece is the sheltered courtyard, with its transparent roof, which is the focal point of the development.

“Standing in the courtyard, you can see through the early education classrooms and the play areas, the outdoor children’s spaces.”

Mr Walker said it was alsoimportant to have cross-connectivity to the areas for children and their families and the staff, both early education and care and administration.

“We have designed officesfor Lady Gowrie’s statewide administration centre, as well as training rooms and consulting rooms for the education and care sector and the general public.”

Mr Walker said he was very proud of the Cumulus Studio’s team work and its overall achievement culminating in the official opening in June.
