To measure is to make mistakes. This applies particularly to thecalibration of measuring instruments. In order to be able toquantify these errors the variation of the measured value isgiven in comparison to a national or international standard.
Reference materials are used in chemical analysis. Certainauthorities and institutes carefully measure such sub-stances (e.g. NIST in Gaithersburg, USA or PTB inBraunschweig, Germany) and their uncer-tainties are very accurately known anddocumented accordingly.
From these primary referencematerials further secondary, tertiary, etc. reference materialsare derived by comparativemeasurements. At each stagethe uncertainty resultingfrom the measuring agentsand methods is given incomparison to the primaryreference material. In all casesit is important that the cali-bration of the measuringsystem can be traced back to theparticular primary standard in anunbroken chain.
In pH measurement working referencebuffers are used which are obtained by com-parison with primary or secondary materials. WTWpH buffers meet these requirements. A certificate documentsthe uncertainty of the pH value.
What we can offer ...
The accuracy of a test agent must be monitored at regularintervals by calibration in order to ensure that it is functioningproperly. This task belongs to basic quality assurance andGood Laboratory Practise and is a fundamental requirement forthe certification of a QA system according to DIN ISO 9000,which is being attempted or achieved by a continually in-
creasing number of laboratories.
Proper calibration of a measuring instrumentrequires specially qualified personnel with
a thorough knowledge of the particu-lar instrument and the presence of
suitable calibration devices. WTWis available as a competent part-ner and can carry out this taskfor all WTW measuring systemsfor the determination of pH,conductivity and dissolvedoxygen.
We have been certified to ISO9001 since 1993. Our cali-
bration devices are based onnational standards. Calibration
agents for which no nationalstandard exists are prepared ac-
cording to national and internationalstandard methods.
We carry out a works calibration and providea calibration certificate.
We offer you:• Works calibration (without serial number)
certifying that the product is in accordance withthe technical data contained in the operatinginstructions (free of charge)
• Manufacturer’s test certificate: individual test certificate, proof for the purposes of DIN ISO 9000 (free of charge)
• Manufacturer’s certificate for calibrationsolutions (free of charge)
• CE declaration of conformity (free of charge) • Calibration certificate for measuring instruments
and signal generators (against invoice)

More comfort, quality and precision
• The low-impedance membrane glass ensures that stablemeasurements are rapidly achieved even at low sampletemperatures
• The reference electrolyte with its low silver ion contenttogether with the temperature-insensitive platinumdiaphragm prevent interference by precipitated silver.
• SenTix® electrodes are robust and shockproof. A special mem-brane glass and the plastic shaft ensure mechanical stability.
• SenTix® with liquid electrolyte – the optimized outflowspeed rinses the platinumdiaphragm free and prevents
contamination by precipitates ordirt even during changes in tem-
perature; with new membraneglass for even quicker response.
• SenTix® H and HW ground diaphragm electrodes allowthe electrolyte outflow speed at the diaphragm to bealtered.

Soil respiration measurements are used for forecasting, sur-veying and checking remediation work, for biodegradabilitymeasurements of substances (pesticides, fungicides, fertilizers, etc.) as well as for carrying out toxicity tests.
This determination is possible with the OxiTop® Control Systemand special, practically-tested measuring vessels in a veryaccurate, simple and favorably-priced way.
The expenditure for personnel and apparatus is considerablyreduced when compared with conventional methods.
OECDDetermination of biodegradability according to OECD 301 F / ISO 9408 / DIN EN 29 408
The determination of the biodegradability should be checkedbefore “new” chemicals are used for the first time, not only forenvironmental reasons but also to minimize disposal charges.
The sample prepared according to the instructions and ablank are stirred at a constant temperature for 28 days inclosed bottles.
The CO2 produced by degradation processes is removed fromthe gas space by means of an absorber so that the resultingnegative pressure is a measure of the biodegradability.
The continuous recording of the values in the OxiTop®-Cmeans that the required documentation can be guaranteed inan optimal manner.
WTW offers two systems that differ in the type of samplebottles used.
Depletion/RespirationThe investigation and monitoring of biological cleaning treatment processes are becoming
more and more important with respect to the environmental requirements such aswastewater treatment, soil remediation and waste treatment.
In order to determine the biodegradability of foodstuffs, pollutants, harmful substances orwaste substances and the microbial activity so-called respiration (depletion) measurements
are carried out. OxiTop® Control measuring systems are suitable for both aerobic and anaerobic determinations.

omBiogas determinationDetermination of anaerobic degradation processes
Anaerobic degradation processes take place in the absence ofoxygen. In order to be able to fill the gas space above the samplewith inert gas the measuring bottle has side-mounted connectionswhich are sealed with septa. When anaerobic degradation has takenplace the dissolved CO2 can be driven off and then removed fromthe gas space by means of a CO2 absorber. The resulting pressuredifference is proportional to the CO2 concentration, the remainingoverpressure is proportional to the methane concentration.
The degradation process can be comfortably followed in the“pressure” operating mode of the OC 110.
The OxiTop®-C measuring system is also suitable for use inmicrobiology. The anaerobic determination and aerobic deter-mination systems mean that a wide range of possible methodsfor carrying out microbiological investigations is available; thispermits adaptation to specific requirements.

Laboratory turbidity meters for nephelometric measurementswith automatic 3-point calibration, RS 232 output, built-inreal-time clock and calibration interval monitoring. Measuringrange selection from 0.01 ... 1000 NTU is carried out auto-matically and for comparative measurements the current andprevious values can be shown on the 2-line display.
Scope of supply: instrument with integral short operating in-structions, accessory case with 2 empty cuvettes, 3 secondarystandards (0.02 – 10.0 – 1000 NTU) and cuvettes cleaningtissue.
High-precision laboratory turbidity meters with a wide mea-suring range of 0.0001 to 10000 NTU for all turbidity mea-suring applications from ultrapure and drinking watermeasurements, through quality assurance in the soft drinksindustry up to checking wastewater.
The measuring system with its 4 detectors allows not onlynephelometric (90° scatter) measurements and transmissionmeasurements, but also ratio measurements in which theinfluences of stray light and sample color are reduced.
The scope of supply includes everything necessary for themeasurement, from calibration standards to empty cuvettes.
