Lab Equipment Scavenger Hunt What am I used for? What am I? Number I am used to accurately measure volume of liquids. I come in a variety of sizes and have fine volume markings. I usually hold liquids. I also come in different sizes and have rough volume markings.
A variety of equipment can be attached to me, so your hands can be free.
I can be used to measure the mass of a substance. You need to adjust the three rider beams, starting with the largest scale, and combine the three readings.
I use two lenses and a light source to make objects appear larger. Very small objects can be magnified on my stage.
If you need the contents of a test tube to stay put during an experiment, stick me on top and I’ll make sure they stay.
I am a flat-‐bottomed jar used in chemistry. I have a lip for pouring materials out. You will often use me for mixing materials but should use a graduated cylinder when it comes to measuring.
I am used to measure weight – the force exerted by gravity to the counterforce applied by the spring. I am useful for items that do not fit on platforms or are different in shape. To use me, simply place the item to be weighed on my hook and read the weight on the scale.
If you place a beaker on top of me, I can heat its contents. I am safer than a Bunsen burner because I don’t use a flame but don’t leave me unoccupied!
Place organisms and other small samples on me if you want to see them up close using a microscope. There are two ways to prepare me – a dry mount or a wet mount.
I have a wide base and narrow neck. I am named after the German chemist you created me in 1861. You will use me for solutions that need to be shaken.
Sometimes test tubes can be too hot to handle so you can use me to pick them up safely.
Use me to perform experiments involving small amount of liquid. Because I am small and clear, it is easy to compare my contents for observations.
