So that you can derive as much benefit as possible from your conversation classes, you should prepare your responses to the stimulus cards in this booklet in advance. This will mean not only

that you should read the questions, using a dictionary where necessary, but that you should write down key vocabulary and expressions, before the class, to help you to express yourself. You should also look at the point of view that you do not choose and think of how you will counter the arguments that might be used against the view that you put forward. A word of warning: in the examination itself, you will not have a list of points for and against in front of you. It would be useful therefore if you were to remember some of the points that you will make use of in this booklet – you may need them again.
Remember that, in the oral exam itself, you will be judged by the sophistication of your contributions as well as by your linguistic accuracy. In your answers, therefore, you should develop the skill not only of giving your opinions but also of extending what you say. This could, for example, include giving more than one concrete example of what you think or looking at potential objections to what you say. It is certainly not going to be in your interest to express your opinions in the most concise form possible and then wait for the examiner to ask you another question.
You should bear these points in mind. They are valid for all the cards and you will find them written at the top of the card that you choose next May in the speaking test with the visiting examiner.
