MHL HAS BEEN WORKING ON THEIR HYDROFOIL KITEBOARDING PROJECT FOR ALMOST THREE YEARS NOW.

Designing and testing on the water to

discover the important parameters that make

the product fly. Literally. They have the most

sophisticated tools to develop the product and

a bad ass team of engineers and riders to

keep it rolling. With cutting edge tools that

allow them to dream up a new design in the

morning and ride it that same afternoon.

Which is almost unheard of. They are also

really pushing new composite molding

techniques to be able to produce for the

masses. It is sort of like the Bat Cave, but set

here in Aguadilla. I caught up with Nick

Leason to learn more about this up and

coming sport and how MHL stays on the

cutting edge of the newest extreme water

sport.

The Hydrofoil is basically a

surfboard with winged attachments below the

board which, lift you out of the water and

allow you to fly. Foilboarding is a relatively

new sport in the world of surfing and

kitesurfing, Nick explained. People most

commonly think back to the movie, "Step Into

Liquid," where Laird Hamilton surfed  50 foot

waves while floating over the water wearing

snowboard boots. He's still doing it, but the

sport has evolved since that time into a region

of surfing and kitesurfing. Now you can go

kiteboarding with the foil and ride without the

use of boots or straps.

"Foilboarding is an incredible feeling

and one of the most sophisticated ways of

sailing. The moment your board rises off the

water, you have the feeling that you are

floating, everything goes silent and you feel

that you can glide anywhere. It is as if deep

powder snowboarding has met the world of

surfing and kitesurfing. From a sailing

perspective, the foil has incredible

characteristics of low drag which allows you to

sail faster and higher into the wind than most

sailing vessels in the world. The feeling is

freeing and it is definitely starting to merit its

own category as an independent sport," he

expressed.

At the moment, there are a few

people around the world that are working on

foilboards. France, Dubai, Hawaii.... It is a

growing interest and I think that we will see a

growth within this next year. But the absolute

best hydrofoils in the world are being

developed and built right here in Aguadilla,

Puerto Rico.

MHLʼs product is starting to go all over

the place. And they plan to launch their own

brand "Lift" world wide. “I have people that

want the product in the US, New Zealand,

France, Spain, Dubai… Our first production

foil went to the Kitesurfing world champion,

John Heineken, out in San Francisco.

Thats a good start.”

The traditional Hydrofoil was built for

use behind a boat and is made of solid

aluminum. Its dangerous, heavy and limits the

construction possibilities.

MHL CUSTOM

...The use  of carbon fiber and other composite materials opens a world of possibilities and allows you to create a far better product.

One thing that we will be looking out for is the first Foilboarding world championship race in La Ciotat, France on May 17th. Should be a great event and we hope to bring home the prize.
