Once again Ellerstina, for the second year in a row, is going into the Argentine Open with a chance of winning the Triple Crown. They were on the verge last year, but Adolfi to Cambiaso’s La Dolfi na excelled themselves and, in an epic fi nal, with Mariano Aguerre saying farewell to the team from Cañuelas, they prevented their powerful rivals, Ellerstina, from winning the coveted Triple Crown.

Once again fate will decide, with some major changes in the top teams, in particular the rivals par excellence, Ellerstina and La Dolfi na, who will do battle once again, one to achieve a treble and the other to snatch it away from under their noses and thwart their quest for the third time, not to discount the rest of the participants in the Open.

Without doubt, the Argentine Polo Open has become so important that no one in the polo world wants to miss it, wherever they are from; whether it be Europe, the United States, Australia, Asia or Africa, everyone who loves this sport and is passionate about real high-goal polo will be there.

La Bocha by Snoopy Polo will be present at this huge event once again, having revamped its structure and appointed a great fi gure of the photography world, Ricardo Motran. For the fi rst time, this year we will be present with our own stand at the Palermo Open to distribute our popular publication among thousands of enthusiasts from all over the planet.

For the occasion, we wanted to surprise our readers with some fascinating content accompanied by the best snapshots.

We start with the Tortugas and Hurlingham Opens, whose status as prestigious Argentine Triple Crown tournaments merits them pride of place in our pages.But the tour of the polo world also stops off in the United States, where the 2010 season came to an end in great fashion, a sign of the good things to come in 2011.

Sotogrande also brought its season to a close in style and is preparing to celebrate the 40th anniversary of its International Tournament next year with plenty of new features and the best teams. France has also been a focus of La Bocha by Snoopy Polo’s lens.

Lastly, but no less importantly, Camilo Bautista, patron of Las Monjitas, Ramón Mora Figueroa, chairman of Santa María Polo Club, and Eduardo Huergo, chairman of the FIP, are also present in a gala edition of La Bocha by Snoopy Polo which brings to a close the season with the best of the sport, which is currently dazzling us at the Cathedral of Polo in Palermo.

Un año más Ellerstina, y van dos consecutivos, se presenta en el Abierto Argentino con la posibilidad de obtener la Triple Corona. A punto estuvieron el pasado año, pero La Dolfi na de Adolfi to Cambiaso se superó a sí mismo y en una fi nal épica, donde se despedía Mariano Aguerre de la escuadra de Cañuelas impidió que el potente y aspirante a conseguirlo todo, Ellerstina se adjudicase la ansiada Triple Corona.

Cosas del destino, otro año más, donde habrá grandes cambios en los principales equipos, concretamente en los rivales por excelencia, Ellerstina vs. La Dolfi na, que pueden pelear, uno para conseguirlo y otro por dejarle la miel en los labios y posponer el ansiado entorchado por partida triple, sin despreciar al resto de participantes en el Abierto.

Sin duda alguna, el Abierto Argentino de Polo ha tomado tal relevancia que no hay nadie del mundo del polo que quiera perdérselo, sea de la latitud que sea, bien de Europa, Estados Unidos, Australia, Asia o África, allí estaremos todos los que amamos este deporte y sentimos una inusitada pasión por el verdadero polo del más alto hándicap.

Desde La Bocha by Snoopy Polo, que cumple un año más en este magno evento, y después de su renovada estructura e incorporación de un grande del mundo de la imagen, Ricardo Motran. Como novedad, este año estaremos presente con stand propio en el Abierto de Palermo para atender y difundir nuestra demandada publicación entre los miles de afi cionados llegados de todo el planeta.

Para ello, hemos pretendido sorprender a nuestros lectores con contenidos de máximo interés y acompañado por las mejores instantáneas.

Abrimos con los Abiertos de Tortugas y Hurlingham, su condición de pertenecer a la prestigiosa Triple Corona argentina bien merece ser destacada en nuestras páginas.

Pero el recorrido por el mundo del polo también hace escala en Estados Unidos que cerró su temporada 2010 en gran forma presagiando todo lo bueno que vendrá en el 2011.

Sotogrande también le dijo adiós, y por todo lo alto, a su calendario y el año que viene se prepara para festejar los 40 años de su Torneo Internacional con muchas novedades y los mejores equipos. Francia también estuvo en el foco del objetivo de La Bocha by SnoopyPolo.

The team made of the brothers Gonzalo and Facundo Pieres, Pablo Mac Donough and Juan Martín Nero have drawn level with their rivals La Dolfina with four Hurlingham Open titles in the last decade.

They have also positioned themselves, once again, as the sole pretenders to the Argentine Polo Association (AAP) Triple Crown after climbing to the top of the podium in the Tortugas and Hurlingham Opens.

La Dolfina, following a great comeback that brought them an incredible victory against La Aguada to reach the final of the competition, put in a very uncertain performance to lose to Ellerstina by 19 goals to 13, an identical score to their encounter in the same tournament in 2009.

Ellerstina went out onto the field ready to deliver another convincing display, scoring two goals thanks to effective play from Gonzalo Jr. and Facundo Pieres, in that order, to which the losing team responded with goals from Bartolomé Castagnola and David Stirling (Jr), bringing to a close the first chukka with the scores on 2-2. It looked like it would be another close battle between these ‘classic’ rivals.

However, when in the second chukka Ellerstina brought out all their physical-technical prowess and strength in attack, La Dolfina could only respond with individual attempts and their big star, Adolfo Cambiaso, was always very well contained by the Ellerstina quartet’s marking.

For the first time in ages, the best player in the world was unable to shine like he usually does or score goals for his team.

Although the partial scores generally typified the differences in the teams’ performances, the losing side managed to win the seventh and last chukkas by 2-1 and 3-0 (when the Ellerstina boys took their foot off the pedal), but it was always a long way off what La Dolfina have shown they can do over the Argentine seasons.

Ultimately, Ellerstina, absolutely superior throughout the match, were the deserving winners of the open and are once again on the verge of winning the AAP Triple Crown. Following the match, the trophy was awarded to Ellerstina and there were also prizes for the top-scorer in the match, Facundo Pieres (12 goals), the best Polo Argentino pony (awarded by the Argentine Association of Polo Horse Breeders), which went to Gonzalo Pieres’ Grappa Galera, and the best pony in the final, which went to the mare Open Pandora, ridden by Facundo Pieres (awarded by the Hurlingham Club).

“We played well at the beginning and were able to keep up the performance. Against a team like La Dolfina you always have to stay very focussed to avoid losing your structure and leaving open spaces. Fortunately everything went as planned and we got a good win”, said Juan Martín Nero following the final.

Facundo Pieres described the final as “strange” and added that “we got ahead but against a team like La Dolfina you have to be wary of what might happen. I think we played well this afternoon (in the final) and improved from the last match. I’m delighted to have won the Hurlingham Open”. m

El equipo de los hermanos Gonzalo y Facundo Pieres, Pablo Mac Donough y Juan Martín Nero iguala la marca de su rival La Dolfina, con cuatro títulos del Abierto de Hurlingham en la última década.

Además se posiciona, otro año más, como el único aspirante a llevarse la Triple Corona de la Asociación Argentina de Polo (AAP) tras subirse a lo más alto del podio en los Abiertos de Tortugas y Hurlingham.

La Dolfina, tras la gran reacción que le permitió alcanzar una increíble victoria sobre La Aguada para meterse en la final del certamen, tuvo un desempeño muy dubitativo volviendo a perder ante Ellerstina, como en el 2009, por idéntico marcador 19 a 13.

Ellerstina salió dispuesto a ofrecer otra de sus contundentes actuaciones logrando dos tantos producto de la efectividad de Gonzalo (h) y Facundo Pieres en ese orden, a lo que el perdedor respondió con goles de Bartolomé Castagnola y David Stirling (h) cerrando el parcial inicial con un 2 a 2 que hizo pensar que se viviría otra de las acostumbradas luchas entre estos “clásicos” rivales.

Sin embargo, cuando en el segundo chukker Ellerstina sacó a relucir todo su bagaje físico-técnico y contundencia ofensiva, la Dolfina respondió sólo con intentos personales y su principal estrella, Adolfo Cambiaso, estuvo siempre muy bien contenido por la marca del cuarteto de Ellerstina.

Por primera vez en mucho tiempo, el mejor jugador del mundo no logró lucirse como nos tiene acostumbrados ni marcar goles para su equipo.

Mientras que los cierres de los parciales denotaban las

diferencias en los funcionamientos colectivos recién en el séptimo y el último chukker, el equipo perdedor logró adjudicarse esos períodos por 2 a 1 y 3 a 0 (cuando los chicos de Ellerstina levantaron el pie del acelerador) pero siempre lejos de lo que La Dolfina demuestra a lo largo de las temporadas argentinas.

Finalmente Ellerstina, absolutamente superior en todo el encuentro, se adjudicó con muchísima justicia este Abierto y quedaron, una vez más, en la puerta de llevarse la Triple Corona de la AAP.

Tras el partido se le otorgó el trofeo de campeón al equipo de Ellerstina y también se premió al goleador del partido, Facundo Pieres (12 goles), al mejor ejemplar inscripto Polo Argentino que fue para Grappa Galera, de Gonzalo Pieres, premiada por la Asociación Argentina de Criadores de Caballos de Polo y finalmente a la yegua Open Pandora, jugada por Facundo Pieres, premiada por el Hurlingham Club por ser el mejor caballo de la final.

“Jugamos bien en el comienzo y pudimos mantener el nivel. Siempre con un equipo como La Dolfina tenés que estar muy concentrado para no perder la organización y no dejar espacios libres. Por suerte todo salió como teníamos planeado y ganamos bien”, manifestó Juan Martín Nero tras la final.

Por su parte, Facundo Pieres, describió al encuentro final como “raro” y agregó que “sacamos ventaja pero siempre tenés que seguir atento a lo que puede pasar teniendo a La Dolfina enfrente. Creo que tuvimos buen jugo esta tarde (por la final) y mejoramos con respecto al último partido. Estoy muy contento por haber ganado el Abierto de Hurlingham”. m

Ellerstina get on well with the Tortugas Open. The team in black have won fi ve of the last six tournaments.

In 2010 they left no room for doubt and smashed an Indios Chapaleufú II side that were in tune but could do nothing against the power of Ellerstina.

The score was a conclusive 21 goals to 11 and Ellerstina took the fi rst step towards the coveted Triple Crown. Perhaps it will be this year, the last in which the Pieres brothers, Mac Donough and Nero will play together, that they manage to do it.

In the fi nal, with Facundo Pieres in great form (he was the top scorer in the match and the tournament), Ellerstina took the reins from start to fi nish. They quickly got ahead and ran the show. By the fourth chukka they were already

ten goals ahead on the scoreboard.

With enviable ease, they looked like a well-honed machine whose team performance saw them winning every contest for the ball to attack with speed. The players were impossible to contain and every time they destroyed the attempts to respond from Chapaleufú II, who despite their fi ghting spirit and tenacity could do nothing to turn the match around.

The winners’ well-worked goals rendered futile all the efforts of Chapa II, who were buried with full honours by a team that showed that it is the most disciplined, organised and well-prepared for the rest of the season ahead.

Over the past four years, Ellerstina have won nine tournaments, a great record for the only team of the season with a 40-goal handicap.

Ellerstina y su sana costumbre de festejar en Tortugas

La primera gema de la Triple Corona fue a parar a manos del cuarteto que for-man los hermanos Gonzalo y Facundo Pieres, Pablo Mac Donough y Juan Martín Nero que derrotó a Indios Chapaleufú II por un contundente 21-11 en la fi nal.

El Abierto de Tortugas le sienta bien a Ellerstina. De las últimas seis ediciones el equipo que viste de negro se llevó cinco.

En la edición 2010 no dejó dudas y vapuleó a un equipo de Indios Chapaleufú II que llegaba entonado pero que nada pudo hacer ante el poderío de Ellerstina.

Fue un claro 21 a 11 y el primer paso para obtener la ansiada Triple Corona. Quizás, este año, que será el último en el que jueguen juntos los hermanos Pieres, Mac Donough y Nero, se les dé.

En la fi nal con Facundo Pieres en gran nivel (fue el goleador del partido y del torneo), Ellerstina tomó las riendas del partido desde el comienzo. Sacó una rápida ventaja y lo manejó como quiso. En el cuarto chukker ya estaba 10 goles arriba en el marcador.

Con una soltura envidiable, pareció una maquina que mostraba con sufi ciencia su constante funcionamiento colectivo que lo llevó a ganar por completo todos los anticipos y las cargas a fondo. Sus jugadores eran imposibles de contener, por lo que destruyó siempre todos los intentos de reacción de Indios Chapaleufú II que pese a su lucha y tesón, nada pudieron hacer para revertir el trámite.

Las defi niciones del ganador, muy bien elaboradas, hicieron insufi ciente toda la entrega de Chapa II, que cayó con todos los honores ante el equipo que demuestra ser el más disciplinado, bien dirigido y mejor preparado para lo que queda de la temporada.

En los últimos cuatro años, Ellerstina consiguió nueve torneos, todo un récord para el único equipo de la temporada con 40 goles de handicap.

The unbeaten Sao José team, comprising the Chilean Antonio Eguiguren and the Brazilians Joao Paulo Gannon, Rodrigo Ribeiro de Andrade and José Eduardo Kalil were crowned champions of the Gold Cup organised every year by Ellerstina Polo Club at their grounds in the General Rodríguez locality, Buenos Aires province, Argentina.

In the final, Sao José comfortably defeated the La Hormiga quartet of Hilario and Salvador Ulloa, Guillermo Willington and José Luis Bravo by 16 goals to 6.

Following two very evenly matched and intense initial chukkas, in the third period Sao José excelled themselves with a partial score of 4-0 to stretch away from their opponents.

From then on they started to control the ball and make use of a highly effective and accurate Joao Paulo Gannon, who

scored seven penalties and was well supported by a team effort from Ribeiro de Andrade, Kalil and Eguiguren, who put up a barricade against the deep and fast attacks from the brothers Hilario and Salvador Ulloa.

Sao José earned another victory at Ellerstina Polo Club, where they were champions of the same cup in 2008.

In the semi-finals of the Gold Cup, Sao José defeated Elevation by 12 goals to 7, while La Hormiga overcame Alegría by a tight 14 goals to 13. To clinch one of the Subsidiary Cups up for grabs, the La Picaza team defeated Tupungato Winelands by 8 goals to 7.

This customary tournament brought in some great high-goalers and others who are clearly on the up, with a large number of foreign players and patrons of various nationalities making up many of the thirteen 22- and 23-goal teams. m

La formación de Sao José, conformada por el chileno Antonio Eguiguren y los brasileños Joao Paulo Gannon, Rodrigo Ribeiro de Andrade y José Eduardo Kalil, se consagró campeón de la Copa de Oro que organiza anualmente Ellerstina Polo Club, en sus canchas ubicadas en la localidad de General Rodríguez, provincia de Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Sao José derrotó incuestionablemente en la final al cuarteto de La Hormiga (Hilario y Salvador Ulloa, Guillermo Willington y José Luis Bravo) por 16 a 6.

Tras los primeros chukkers muy parejos e intensos fue en el tercer período donde logró despuntar Sao José que logró un parcial de 4 a 0 y dobló en el marcador a su rival.

A partir de ese momento comenzó a controlar la bocha y aprovechando la gran eficacia y precisión de Joao Paulo Gannon, que capitalizó 7 penales, bien afirmado en el juego colectivo con los aportes de Ribeiro de Andrade, Kalil

y Eguiguren, quienes le pusieron un vallado a los intentos profundos y veloces de los hermanos Hilario y Salvador Ulloa.

Sao José suma una nueva conquista en Ellerstina Polo donde había sido campeón de esta misma copa en el año 2008.

En la instancia de semifinales por la Copa de Oro, Sao José venía de derrotar a Elevation por 12 a 7 al tiempo que La Hormiga superó ajustadamente a Alegría 14 a 13.

Por una de las Copas Subsidiarias puestas en juego, el equipo de La Picaza venció a Tupungato Winelands por 8 a 7.

El tradicional torneo congregó a grandes jugadores de alto handicap y otros en franco ascenso, sumado a una buena cantidad de extranjeros, entre los que se encuentran varios patrones de distintas nacionalidades conformando gran par-te de los trece equipos de 22 y 23 goles de handicap. m

LA COLUMNA DEL MAGO

I admit I had to edit this text after reading it a couple of times. For ten years this genius has been winning everything and showing that he is superior to everyone else, a competitive animal who has to be allowed to make the odd mistake. He doesn’t owe anything to anybody; he has given a great deal and has always done what he wants, and that’s nothing new.

News and information come gushing forth, inundated with ink and Internet, stalked by TV cameras, incapable of captur-ing “emotions, instincts, feelings”, in which Adolfo took up en-tire lines, with a row of slightly resentful men lining up in the ‘waiting room’, disguised in admiration, who off the record admit their recognition of his unique gift.

It was the afternoon when the idol defeated himself.

“I always want to win, whoever it’s against”, is his catchphrase, in every action and/or circumstance.

The essence of a man held fast to an unalterable code of honour, who reality forced to change, revealing his secrets, leaving him exposed to criticism, which is good, but only if intentions are good.

This affected the man and wiped away the player. And he showed that he is human. It’s the end of a cycle, a rupture, full of achievements, happiness and sadness, like the feeling he has now. Life, I owe you nothing, life, I’ve paid my dues.

His brilliance makes him provocative, but the extraordinary gift he has comes with great responsibility and this time he wasn’t equal to the circumstances.

He worried his own people and others, organisers and spon-sors, opponents and team-mates, ethics and decorum.

The manifest superiority of the champions, in horses and in play, was conceded in a genuine expression: “they shat all over us”, he said in response to his son asking him how the match had gone.

In his emotional fatigue he attempted to blame the circum-stances of the match on the refereeing, entering into a game of words, fl aunting his status as an idol, betrayed by his emo-tions, disgruntled perhaps by their decisions.

A slave of his promises and master of his silence, in the 2009 Palermo fi nal he acknowledged his respect and unconditional support for the referees. This is the moment to make good his words.

It was the straw that broke the camel’s back and it was all over the papers on the Monday, making it even more diffi -cult to read the reality, which is so badly needed at this mo-ment. Facundo was brilliant until the last chukka, alongside a Gonzalito with no weak points, accompanied by Juan Martín and Pablito, following the codes that we all know, respect and understand, and which in no way belittles their stature as players. The best men won, it was a knockout for the ego.

Waiting for decisions to be made, the waters are murky, the Novillo Astrada brothers are cited, Lucas Monteverde is discharged, the referee Boudou is to be absent at Palermo, Memo Gracida and Milo Fernández Araujo are invited to referee, they immediately decline, and the AAP attempts to create harmony with its Zero Tolerance Code, which means applying the law to the letter and ‘dying with your boots on’.

Standardising refereeing criteria means giving identical penal-ties for identical fouls, regardless of the person or the situ-ation. According to the rule of law, some national banner says, therein the problem resides, there are some who have a great deal of power, too much, so much that it’s best to leave it as it is.

‘Let he who is without sin cast the fi rst stone’.

Good intentions are shaped by the soul, showing weakness is to remain strong.

It is a time to show good sense, serenity, and to come up with positive ideas to make sure this beautiful music con-tinues to play in time with the most refi ned tolerance.

Ellerstina are champions. They are aiming straight for the most coveted prize; they have the people, the motivation, but also a doubt that torments them: and what if their an-ger subsides?

Erring is human. Forgiving is divine.

Admito tener que haber modifi cado el texto luego de leerlo un par de veces. Hace diez años que este monstruo gana todo y demuestra ser superior al resto, un animal de competencia que se le debe admitir que un día puede equivocarse. No le debe nada a nadie, ha dado mucho y siempre hizo lo que quiso y eso no es nada nuevo.

A borbotones, noticias e información, inundados de tinta e inter-net, merodeados por cámaras de TV, incapaces de captar “emo-ciones, instintos, sensaciones”, donde Adolfo ocupó líneas enteras, habiendo en la “sala de espera”, una fi la de hombres con ligeros resentimientos, disfrazados de admiración, quienes off de récord admiten su reconocimiento a su dote de único.

Fue la tarde donde el ídolo se derrotó a sí mismo.

“Quiero ganar siempre, no importa el rival”, es su frase de cabe-cera, en toda acción y/o circunstancia.

La esencia de un hombre atornillado a códigos inalterables, que la realidad obligó a cambiar, transparentando su ocultismo de procedimiento, dejándolo al desnudo, frente a la crítica, que es buena, si la intención es buena.

En fatiga emocional intentó trasladar las circunstancias del juego a lo administrativo arbitral, entrando a un juego dialecto, torean-do y ostentando su condición de ídolo, traicionado por sus emo-ciones, contrariado tal vez por sus decisiones.

Esclavos de sus dichos y soberano de su silencio, la fi nal del 2009 de Palermo admitió su respeto y apoyo incondicional al referato. Este es el momento exacto para cumplirlo.

Unifi cación de criterios arbi-trales signifi ca a idéntica falta, idéntica sanción, sin importar nom-bre ni situación. Por imperio de la ley o la fuerza, reza alguna insignia pa-tria, el problema reside allí mismo, hay alguno que tiene mucha fuerza, demasiada, tanto que es mucho mejor dejarlo así.

With the help of the ‘King of Cups’, Adolfo Cambiaso, patron John Muse’s team won the Pacific Coast Open held at Santa Barbara Polo Club to clinch the Triple Crown that was up for grabs at the prestigious Californian club.

Lucchese and Cambiaso,the perfect combination

Cambiaso can’t stop winning. He has had a dream season and with his team Lucchese’s victory in Santa Barnara Polo Club’s Pacific Coast Open, defeating ERG by 10 goals to 8 in the final, he has now won eight titles in a row in one year.

Since December 2009, when he clinched the Argentine Open Championship with his team La Dolfina, he has climbed to the top of the podium in every international tournament he has taken part in. In the United States he won the Triple Crown at the International Polo Club with Crab Orchard (winning the CV Whitney, the USPA Gold Cup and the US Open) and at Santa Barbara he did the same thing with Lucchese (in the Robert Skene Trophy, the America Cup and the Pacific Coast Open). In England he won the Queen’s Cup and the Gold Cup with Dubai to round off a winning streak never achieved by a professional polo player. The talented player was also the top goal scorer in each tournament, confirming his status as the world number one.

The final

The unbeaten Lucchese team, with Cambiaso, John Muse, Jason Crowder and Andrés Weisz, overcame ERG (Scott Wood, Santiago Torres, Francisco de Narváez and Gerardo Collardin) by 10 goals to 8.

Lucchese controlled the ball and the scoreboard throughout the match. From the outset they resolutely took the initiative and they kept it until the end.

In the second chukka Francisco de Narváez was injured and had to give up his post for his fellow countryman Hilario Ulloa, but the game followed the same course as before and Lucchese, thanks to the effectiveness of Cambiaso (scoring seven of his team’s ten goals) and a great performance from Weisz, deservedly came away with the title. Lucchese’s Jason Crowder was the MVP and Adolfo Cambiaso’s Dolfina Noruega was the Best Playing Pony in the final. m

Cambiaso no para de ganar. Lleva una temporada de ensueño y con la consagración de su equipo Lucchese en el Pacific Coast Open de Santa Barbara Polo Club, tras vencer a ERG por 10 a 8 en la final, ya suma ocho títulos consecutivos en un año.

Desde diciembre del 2009, cuando obtuvo con su equipo La Dolfina el Campeonato Argentino Abierto, se ha subido al primer puesto del podio en los torneos internacionales en los que participó. En Estados Unidos logró la Triple Corona en el International Polo Club con Crab Orchard (CV Whitney, USPA Gold Cup y US Open) y en Santa Barbara hizo lo propio con Lucchese (Robert Skene Trophy, America Cup y Pacific Coast Open). En Inglaterra obtuvo la Queens Cup y la Gold Cup con Dubai completando una racha exitosa nunca antes lograda por un polista profesional. Además el talentoso jugador se constituyó en el máximo goleador en cada uno de los torneos, revalidando su condición de Nº 1 del mundo.

El equipo invicto de Lucchese, con Cambiaso, John Muse, Jason Crowder y Andrés Weisz superó por 10 a 8 a ERG (Scott Wood, Santiago Torres, Francisco de Narváez y Gerardo Collardin).

Lucchese tuvo el control de la bocha y el marcador durante todo el encuentro. Desde el arranque tomó decididamente la iniciativa y la mantuvo hasta el final.

En el segundo chukker se desgarró Francisco de Narváez que tuvo que dejarle el puesto a su compatriota Hilario Ulloa, pero el encuentro siguió con las mismas características y Lucchese en mérito a la efectividad de Cambiaso (señalo 7 de los 10 goles de su equipo) y el gran aporte de Weisz, se llevó merecidamente el título. Jason Crowder, de Lucchese, fue MVP y Dolfina Noruega, de Adolfo Cambiaso, fue el mejor ejemplar de la final. m

De la mano del “Rey de Copas” Adolfo Cambiaso, el equipo del patrón John Muse obtuvo el Pacific Coast Open disputado en Santa Barbara Polo Club y con esta consagración logró la Triple Corona que se puso en juego en el prestigioso club de California, Estados Unidos.

Barrington & Orchard Hill take the limelight at Aiken

The Aiken Polo Club season in South Carolina, United States, had two star teams: Orchard Hill and Barrington.

The two sides shared the hon-ours in the two most important tournaments of the 20-goal sea-son, the USPA Silver Cup and the USPA Monty Waterbury Cup.

In the Silver Cup, Orchard Hill, the quartet made up of Steve Van Andel, Nick Roldan, Lucas Criado and Chris Stratemann, were crowned champions after defeating Barrington in the final. The reverse was the case in the Monty Waterbury Cup, with Bar-rington (Barb Uskup, Julio Arella-no, Tommy Biddle and Antonio Galván) overcoming Orchard Hill in the deciding match.

Monty Waterbury Cup

The first encounter between the two teams took place in the final of this 20-goal competition.

It was not just any old match and it confirmed that Barrington and Orchard Hill were the teams to beat in the Aiken Polo season.

The sides swapped places on the scoreboard on three occasions and were level on four.

In the end Barrington were able to clinch victory and the cup by 15 goals to 12.

In the early stages of the six-chukka match, Barrington took the lead by three goals (7-4) at the end of the second chukka.

Orchard Hill reacted in the final stages and managed to turn the

scoreboard around to enter the fifth period with a 12 goals to 9 lead.

But Barrington, with Julio Arellano as their star player, would not give in, and they launched a comeback that first brought them level on 12 goals each, before they took the lead with a final score of 15 goals to 12.

Chris Stratemann was named MVP in the final, while Steve Van Andel took the same honours in the amateur category.

USPA Silver Cup

The story of these two teams was very different in the final of the USPA Silver Cup, in the last 20-goal tournament held by 302 Polo at the Aiken Club, South Carolina.

Orchard Hill were the lords and masters of the deciding match, which they won by a comfort-able 19 goals to 11.

The side led by Steve Van Andel, with the notable presence of Lucas Criado, Nick Roldán and Chris Stratemann, learned their lessons well from the previous final and, above all, in the sec-ond half of the match they left nobody in any doubt about their superiority.

With a minimal lead of 9-8, Bar-rington were ahead at half-time, but in the final three chukkas the Roldán-Criado pairing started combining to perfection and paved the way for Orchard Hill’s victory and championship title.

Roldán was named MVP of the final and Stateman obtained an MVP award for the second time in a row, this time as the best polo player of the tournament. m

Barrington y Orchard Hill, los protagonistas en Aiken

La temporada de Aiken Polo Club en Carolina del Sur, Estados Uni-dos, tuvo dos grandes protagonis-tas: Orchard Hill y Barrington.

Ambos equipos se repartieron los honores en los dos torneos más importantes del calendario de 20 goles de handicap, la USPA Silver Cup y la USPA Monty Waterbury Cup.

La Silver Cup proclamó a Orchard Hill, formación compuesta por Ste-ve Van Andel, Nick Roldán, Lucas Criado y Chris Stratemann, como campeón tras vencer en la final a Barrington y la Monty Waterbury Cup se dio a la inversa, fue Ba-rrington (Barb Uskup, Julio Arellano, Tommy Biddle y Antonio Galván) el que dio cuenta de Orchard Hill en la definición.

La primera cita de estos dos equi-pos se dio en la final de este certa-men de 20 goles de handicap.

No fue un partido cualquiera y su desarrollo no hizo más que confir-mar que Barrington y Orchard Hill eran los equipos a batir durante la temporada en Aiken Polo.

El marcador en el decisivo en-cuentro cambió de dueño en tres oportunidades y estuvo igualado en otras cuatro.

Finalmente Barrington pudo llevar-se el triunfo y la copa al ganar por 15 a 12.

La primera parte del encuentro, pactado a seis chukkers, tuvo a Ba-rrington al frente que llegó a sacar una diferencia de tres goles (7-4) al término del segundo chukker.

Orchard Hill reaccionó en la recta final y logró dar vuelta el marcador e incluso llegar al inicio del quinto período con un parcial de 12 a 9.

Barrington, con Julio Arellano como gran figura, no dio el brazo a torcer y remontó el partido para igualarlo primero en 12 goles y luego seguir de largo para establecer el defini-tivo 15 a 12.

Chris Stratemann fue nombrado como el MVP de la final al tiem-po que Steve Van Andel se llevó el mismo honor en la categoría ama-teur.

USPA Silver Cup

La historia entre estos dos equipos fue bien distinta en al final de la USPA Silver Cup el último torneo de 20 goles disputado en el 302 Polo Club de Aiken, Carolina del Sur.

Orchard Hill fue amo y señor del decisivo encuentro que ganó por un amplio 19 a 11.

La formación liderada por Steve Van Andel y notablemente secun-dada por las figuras de Lucas Cria-do, Nick Roldán y Chris Stratemann tomó buena nota de la anterior final y, sobre todo, en la segunda parte del encuentro no dejó duda alguna de su superioridad.

Con una mínima ventaja de 9-8, Barrington lideraba el parcial tras la mitad del encuentro pero en los tres chukkers finales el tandem Roldán-Criado funcionó a la per-fección y el camino hacia el triunfo y la consagración de Orchard Hill no tuvo piedras en el camino.

Roldán fue nombrado como MVP de la final y Strateman obtuvo, por segunda final consecutiva, la distin-ción de MVP, en esta oportunidad como mejor polista del torneo. m

Nachi Heguy with Ellerstina

Gonzalo Pieres confi rmed the notice to La Bocha by SnoopyPolo, Nachi Heguy will take part of the Ellerstina Polo Team in 2011.

The experience player, with many years in Indios Chapaleufú II, joins the Pieres brothers, Gonzalito, Facun-do and Nicolás in the new team for the 2011 argentinian season.

La Aguada Ladies Cup

With a golden goal from Agustina Zubía in extra time, Bearing Capital overcame Unibike by 7 goals to 6 to clinch the 3rd La Aguada Ladies Cup, following a very close and intense fi nal. The match was held at La Aguada Polo Club.

Prior to the deciding game, the fi nals for the Handicap and Open competitions were held. For third place in the Handicap event, Kawasaki defeated Unlimited Trade by 5 ½ goals to 5. In the Handicap fi nal, Pestelli overcame Pilará, also by 5 ½ goals to 5.

In the prize ceremony, Unibike’s Clara Cassino was named MVP. La Aguada Polo Club also said a special thanks to Ann Roger de Padilla and Patricia Panzarasa Martingaste.

AAP Women’s Tour

The fi rst Women’s Tour Championships organised by the AAP and held at the Alfredo Lalor estate in Pilar was a great success.

In the high-goal competition for the Open fi nal, Arelau-quen defeated La Ensenada-Boca Polo Team by 7 goals to 4 to win the tournament, while in the deciding match in the Handicap, La Ensenada-Aeropuertos defeated Pues-to Viejo by 10 goals to 6 ½. In the Low-goal, San Jorge A

defeated Pilará Piaget by 7 goals to 3 in the Open fi nal and San Antonio de Areco overcame Magdala Kawasaki by 5 ½ to 5 in the Handicap. This competition was or-ganised in two levels and was reserved for federated Ar-gentine and foreign women who possess an up-to-date handicap in the AAP.

Silex are the new Spanish champions

Silex were the deserving winners of the Spanish Cham-pionships held at Santa María Polo Club’s Río fi elds.

The tournament, organised by the Royal Spanish Polo Federation, was held for eight-goal teams and fi ve quar-tets competed over two weekends to become the side in Spain.

Silex were crowned champions, succeeding La Isla in the list of winners. Nacho Domecq, of the winning team, added another Spanish Championships to his personal record, which now totals fi fteen.

In the fi nal day of the championships Silex defeated Real Club de Andalucía by 8 goals to 4 and with their victory they clinched the title of best team in Spain.

Bisontes and El Rosario then played the last match of the tournament, with victory going to El Rosario by 9 goals to 7. Despite the defeat Bisontes fi nished in second place, while La Isla were third.

The championship winning team, which included Richard Fagan, Adolfo de los Casares, Nacho Domecq and Carlos Lucena, received the cup from the Royal Spanish Polo Federation boss, Luis Benjumea.

Nachi Heguy, el cuarto hombre de la Z

El propio Gonzalo Pieres se lo adelantó a La Bocha by SnoopyPolo, Nachi Heguy será el cuarto hombre del proyecto Ellerstina 2011, al cual también se suma, o mejor dicho, se sube a Nicolás Pieres, el menor de la dinastía.

De esta forma el cuarteto de negro develó la incógnita para la próxima temporada, que tras la noticia del alejamiento de Pablo Mac Donough y Juan Martín Nero y su traspaso al bando de La Dolfina, restaba saber, ante la unión de Nicolás Pieres a sus hermanos Gonzalito y Facundo, quien sería el cuarto hombre que los acompañaría.

Nachi Heguy completa el puzzle negro para una temporada argentina 2011 a la cual todavía le faltan muchos meses pero ya se palpita con mucha fuerza.

La Aguada Ladies Cup

Con gol de oro de Agustina Zubía en chukker suplementario, Bearing Capital se impuso a Unibike por 7 a 6 y obtuvo la III Edición de La Aguada Ladies Cup, tras una final muy pareja e intensa, que se desarrolló en La Aguada Polo Club.

Previo al partido decisivo, se realizaron las finales por el handicap y el abierto. En primer término, y por el tercer puesto del handicap, Kawasaki derrotó a Unlimited Trade por 5 ½ a 5. Por la final del handicap, Pestelli superó a Pilará también por 5 ½ a 5.

Durante la entrega de premios, que contó con la presencia

de Javier Novillo Astrada, Clara Cassino, de Unibike, fue consagrada MVP. Además, La Aguada Polo Club agradeció muy especialmente a Ann Rodger de Padilla y Patricia Panzarasa Martingaste, dos de las más grandes impulsoras del polo femenino en la Argentina.

Circuito Femenino de la AAP

Con gran éxito culminó la primera edición del Campeonato Circuito Femenino organizado por la AAP, que se disputó en las canchas del predio Alfredo Lalor en Pilar.

En el Alto Handicap, por la final del Abierto, Arelauquen derrotó a La Ensenada – Boca Polo Team por 7 a 4 y se adjudicó el certamen, en tanto que en el partido decisivo del handicap, La Ensenada – Aeropuertos le ganó a Puesto Viejo por 10 a 6 ½. Por el lado del Bajo, San Jorge A venció a Pilará Piaget por 7 a 3 en la final del abierto y San Antonio de Areco le ganó a Magdala Kawasaki, por 5 ½ a 5 en la del handicap. Cabe aclarar que se utilizó el sistema de handicap femenino.

Este certamen fue organizado en dos niveles de distinta valorización reservado para damas federadas argentinas y extranjeras, que posean su handicap al día en la AAP.

Silex, nuevo campeón de España

Silex se llevó merecidamente el Campeonato de España que tuvo como sede las canchas de Río del Santa Maria Polo Club.

El torneo, organizado por la Real Federación Española de Polo, se jugó para equipos de 8 goles de handicap y participaron cinco formaciones que durante dos fines de semana lucharon por ser el mejor equipo de España.

Sílex se proclamó vencedor, sucediendo en el palmarés a La Isla. Nacho Domecq integrante del equipo campeón, sumó

un nuevo Campeonato de España a su palmarés particular, y ya van quince.

En la última fecha del Campeonato, Sílex derrotó al Real Club de Andalucía por 8 a 4 y con este triunfo se aseguró el título de mejor de España.

Posteriormente, Bisontes y El Rosario jugaron el último partido del campeonato, correspondiendo la victoria a El Rosario por 9 a 7. Bisontes, a pesar de la derrota, se quedó con la segunda posición, mientras que La Isla fue tercero.

El equipo campeón, compuesto por Richard Fagan, Adolfo de los Casares, Carlos Lucena y Nacho Domecq, recibió la copa de manos del gerente de la Real Federación Española de Polo, Luis Benjumea.

La Irenita campeón del Abierto del Jockey

El 46º Campeonato Abierto del Jockey Club 2010 fue a parar a manos del equipo de La Irenita que derrotó en la final a Indios Chapaleufú II, campeón defensor, por 13 a 10.

La formación compuesta por Salvador e Hilario Ulloa, Pablo Mac Donough y Tomás Gándara no tuvo un buen arranque de partido ya que fue Indios Chapaleufú II el que dominó las acciones en los primeros tres chukkers.

Pero desde la salida del cuarto parcial La Irenita se mostró como otro equipo, beneficiado también por el buen recambio de caballos que tuvo en la recta final del partido, y así llegaron cuatro goles seguidos que le permitieron tomar el control del partido y del marcador.

Así fue que la ventaja de dos goles (6-4) de dicho periodo se fue acrecentando en los siguientes chukkers (9-6 y 13-8) para llegar al definitivo 13 a 10 que le significó el titulo.

En este certamen cada vez más jerarquizado, participaron nueve fuertes formaciones de 29 a 36 goles de valorización, con grandes individualidades, entre ellos 5 jugadores que ostentan los 10 goles de handicap: Pablo Mac Donough, Lucas Monteverde (h), Bartolomé Castagnola, Miguel Novillo Astrada y Juan Martín Nero. Su presencia sumado a la gran organización del Jockey Club hacen que este Abierto vaya mejorando año tras año.

“I’ve been in several ideal teams; unlike others I have fun with whoever I play with, otherwise I’m not interested.

Financial factors have nothing to do with it; I need something to motivate me to carry on, to revitalise the soul. Being with nice, polite and fun people, who I can sit down and chat or share my table with”.

HIS HERE AND NOW

“Playing polo and breeding. I discovered something that when I stop playing will keep me involved in this beautiful sport.

What we are doing with Guillermo and his sons is interesting because it is forward looking. Tomorrow, sitting

in the stands, we will be able to look over the fruit of our passion, at what we have created.

One of the most interesting things would be to put out two equal teams of horses. Then we’d really see who is a polo player. It might be possible; in theory with the whole cloning thing uniformity might be achieved. We should quantify other factors that produce excellence in the animal, like breaking, and the people who make the horse.

I could ride a clone of Cuartetera, pull it about in the wrong way and I wouldn’t obtain a good result from the animal. Nowadays the percentage impact of the horses on the result is of around 60 %”.

A success in life and in polo, with important titles in the United States, Argentina and Sotogrande, Camilo Bautista, thanks to his good humour and warmth, let us learn more about the man behind his great organisation.

STARTING OUT IN POLO

“I started riding in around 1985. I’m left-handed and after a month they banned me from playing at the Los Pinos club. At the time there was a polo player in Colombia, at Los Pinos, who played with his left hand, and I practiced with him, and played with my left hand too until the chairman of the club saw me and banned me”, Camilo Bautista recalls in relation to his first swings with the mallet.

These beginnings were followed by several falls and fractures, but far being scared off he kept going, although perhaps not with quite so much enthusiasm at first. But he met an important person who became his friend and mentor: Guillermo Fernández Llanos.

Until that moment, Camilo only played in 4-goal cups, but fate knocked on his door and, as he arrived at his club one day, someone saw him and exclaimed to Guillermo: “he could be the guy the team needs”.

Guillermo organised a 20-goal competition with just seven teams at that time. In response to such a comment, he asked the obligatory question: “Camilo, do you play in 20-goalers?”

He wasn’t particularly surprised, knowing that he was a man destined for great things, but he immediately responded: “I’ve only got five horses, and my four-goal friend, we’d need a ten-goaler to play”.

Guillermo, well versed in the business, just exclaimed: “I’ll organise everything”. He asked Camilo for his car phone then and there, called the great Piki Díaz Alberdi, a 10-goaler in England, who accepted, and they just needed a six-goal player, a post that would be filled by Juanjo Díaz Alberdi, who took no time in accepting seen as his brother would be present in Colombia.

The orange colour is a key part of everything related to the polo world for Camilo Bautista, alongside the blue, “chosen as the colours of our shirt by my wife, who noticed that all the colours were the same.

The fluorescent oranges were designed for training in the first season we played in Sotogrande, Spain. It was just one game, but it was then used for all the matches, and from then on it has identified us entirely.

Like my other shirt [referring to La Aguada, the Novillo Astrada brothers’ team], a week before the semi-finals of the Hurlingham Open I thought it had a good chance, but not so much now [he laughs].

La Aguada is really a very good team, just lacking a bit of concentration. Being four brothers management is a key factor and these are difficult times for anyone.

If they get to the final, they could win the Argentine Open, but the qualifying stages will be very tough.

Polo is not just statistics; there are so many factors: horses, the state of mind of the players, these things can make the difference.

Ellerstina, with everything in their favour, have not always been able to materialise it into results. The pressure of success, together with anxiety, can often wreak havoc, but they are on their way to winning the Triple Crown”.

HAPPINESS

Asked whether he is happy, Camilo Bautista sighs, reflects and then answers: “yes, I’m happy because fortunately I do

something I like. I enjoy these things; I have a good family and very good friends”.

TOP PLAYERS

In the Colombian patron’s view, Adolfo Cambiaso “has a fighting spirit and something in his head that allows him to focus; it’s as though he scares his opponents. He’s so good he produces two opposite effects.

First, there are a lot of good players who when they go up against him they play with half their shirt, although I’m not going to say any names [he laughs].

Second, every time he finishes a tournament his teammates play at least one goal better.”

As for the other great polo players, Bautista says: “Facundo Pieres is a great player. Piki Díaz Alberdi, an incredible player, has not always been very well mounted but has a fantastic nature, he’s naturally gifted”.

Of the new generation he mentions “Magoo Laprida and Tomás García del Río. ‘Pelón Stirling’ is getting better and better, ‘Negrito’ Juan Gris Zabaleta is brilliant, I love ‘Sapo’ Caset’s fighting spirit and I can see an intense future for Polito Pieres. Nicolás Pieres is already there and will have his golden opportunity next year”.

POLO

“Sometimes I’m chided for it, but I see polo as a hobby.

‘No sir’, they say, ‘polo’s a sport’; yes, but it’s a hobby and it’s about the horses. That’s why I think you can enjoy polo all the time, you read it, ask after the horses and always think about playing, making it interesting. It’s a great distraction and it can

be played when you’re head’s full of thoughts, concentrating on what you’re doing.”

MISCELLANEOUS

England:

“No, I don’t like the weather. I hate playing polo in the wet. But that’s what I said when they suggested Palm Beach; I said no, but not never.

Health:

I haven’t played due to injury; last year I fell and hurt my shoulder and they had to operate on me. I’m playing my first practice match today and to be honest I’m aching all over. It’s why I didn’t play in the Ellerstina Gold Cup (which he won last year), which is very competitive and requires 100 % fitness. I haven’t played for seven months but thankfully I’m improving a great deal.

The importance of the third player in the 26-goal competitions:

Very important. The 26-goal tournaments in the United States is three-a-side polo, not just in the 26-goal handicap but also in the 20. A balanced team in all its areas provides greater solidity.

Referees

I never talk about referees, I’m afraid [laughter].

It will be difficult to compete against La Dolfina. Juan Martín, Pablito, El Pelón and ‘Nene’ to top it off.

Celebrating with champagne in the Jockey Open with my two friends Guillermo Fernández Llanos and Álvaro Gómez; I almost missed my flight home, celebrating victory in the first world championships.

TALKING BACK

I like to keep a low profile. Between friends I’d say it’s time to talk a bit more about the spectacle, which is what has been done but it has to be improved.

As for Zero Tolerance, if that’s what it really is then great, but not if the silence is enforced unequally. We ask ourselves this question in the stands and even in the silence the spectacle is good.

As far as I’m concerned personally, I’m maturing [laughter]; I don’t talk back to the referees much. I didn’t want to talk at all but I’ve been taught that sometimes you have to speak up, so your teammates don’t get annoyed [laughter]; it’s easier for them to penalise a 0-goaler than it is a 9-goaler.

I’ve been penalised a few times; I have photos at the stables in the United States in which I’m saying ‘me?’ to a referee, with Eduardo and Javier making the same gesture, it was a photo taken by Snoopy.

An upright, passionate man, loyalty is his philosophy in life, and although he’s no ‘Monjita’ (‘Little Nun’), he’s a thoroughly good guy. m

INICIO POLISTICO

“Allá por 1985 comencé a montar. Soy zurdo y me suspendie-ron al mes de estar jugando en el club Los Pinos. En ese en-tonces había un polista en Colombia, en Los Pinos, que jugaba con la mano izquierda y me iba de práctica con él, y lo hacía también con la mano izquierda hasta que me vio el presidente del club y me suspendió”, recuerda Camilo Bautista sobre sus primeros “tacazos”.

Esos inicios también fueron seguidos de varias caídas y fractu-ras pero lejos de amedrentarse siguió adelante, es cierto que al principio no con tanto entusiasmo, hasta que conoció a alguien fundamental, que luego se transformó en su amigo y Polo Men-tor : Guillermo Fernández LLanos.

Hasta ese momento, Camilo sólo jugaba copas de 4 goles, pero el destino tocó la puerta y entrando en su club, alguien avizora su llegada y le exclama a Guillermo, “ese puede ser el del equi-po que necesitamos”.

Para entonces Guillermo organizaba los trofeos de 20 goles, con, hasta ese momento, solo 7 equipos. Ante semejante co-mentario no dudó un segundo en la pregunta obligada “Camilo jugás la 20 Goles?”

No se sorprendió demasiado, a sabiendas de ser un hombre destinado a cosas grandes, pero si de inmediato retrucó, “solo tengo 5 caballos y mi amigo con 4 goles. Solo con un 10 de handicap es posible jugar”.

Guillermo sabedor del negocio, exclamó, “yo te organizo todo”. Ahí nomás le pide a Camilo el teléfono de su auto, llama al grandísimo Piki Díaz Alberdi, 10 goles en Inglaterra, quien acep-

ta, faltando solo un polista con 6 de handicap, lugar destinado para Juanjo Díaz Alberdi, quien ante la presencia de su herma-no en Colombia no dudo en sumarse.

Lesionados ambos, Camilo y Piki, llegaron a la final. “Divertidísi-mo puede ser, pero a caballo”, exclamó Camilo, nada mas lejos de la realidad.

REGLA DE ORO

“He integrado varios equipos ideales, a diferencia de otros, me divierto con quien juego, si no es así, no me interesa.

No implica un factor económico, necesito algo que me motive para seguir, refrescar el alma. Estar con personas agradables, educadas y divertidas, con los que pueda sentarme a charlar o compartir mi mesa”.

SU ACTUALIDAD

“Jugar al polo y la cría. Descubrí algo que cuando deje de jugar no me aleje de este hermoso deporte.

Esto que estamos montando con Guillermo y sus hijos es intere-sante pues es hacia el futuro. Es ver el día de mañana, sentado en la tribuna, el fruto de nuestra pasión, lo que hemos creado.

De las cosas más interesantes sería poner una o dos caballadas iguales. Podríamos ver entonces, quien verdaderamente es juga-dor de polo. Podría ser posible, ojo, en teoría con el tema de la clonación se supone que podría tener una equivalencia.

Deberíamos cuantificar otros factores que hacen a la excelen-cia del animal, como es la doma, y en definitiva quién hace el caballo.

Puedo montar un clon de la Cuartetera, jalar en forma errónea y no obtener de ese animal un buen resultado. Hoy el porcenta-je de incidencia equina en un resultado es del 60 %”.

“Ganarle a Cambiaso la final del US Open . Le hemos ganado la semifinal”.

CON LA CAMISETA PUESTA

El color naranja es clave en todo lo referente al mundo del polo para Camilo Bautista, junto con el azul, “elegido como distintivo de las remeras por mi mujer al advertir que todos los colores eran iguales.

Las naranjas fosforescentes fueron diseñadas para las prácti-cas en la primera temporada que jugamos en Sotogrande, Es-paña. Fue un solo juego, utilizado luego para todos los partidos, y que a partir de ahí nos identifica plenamente.

En línea con mi otra camiseta, (se refiere a La Aguada, el equipo de los hermanos Novillo Astrada), una semana antes de la semifinal del Abierto de Hurlingham le daba muchas chances, ahoritica (sic) no tan-to (risas).

Verdaderamente La Aguada es un equipo muy bueno, pero un poco falto de concentra-ción. Siendo cuatro hermanos el manejo es clave y se hace por momentos muy complica-do para cualquiera.

Si llega a la final, es posible que gane el Abierto Argentino aunque la etapa de clasifica-ción será muy dura.

El polo no es estadístico hay tantos factores, caballada, el estado de ánimo de los jugadores, eso puede variarlo todo.

Ellerstina teniendo todo a favor no siempre pudo cristalizarlo en resultados. La presión del logro, junto a la ansiedad, muchas veces hacen estragos pero van camino a la Triple Corona”.

FELICIDAD

Ante la pregunta de sí es feliz, Camilo Bautista suspira, re-flexiona, para luego responder, “sí soy feliz por que afortuna-damente hago lo que me gusta. Disfruto de esas cosas, tengo una buena familia y muy buenos amigos”.

JUGADORAZOS

Para el patrón colombiano, Adolfo Cambiaso “tiene una ga-rra y algo en la cabeza que le permite enfocar, es como que los intimida. Es tan bueno que produce dos efectos contrarios. El primero, hay muchos jugadores buenos que frente a él jue-gan con la mitad de la camiseta y no estoy dispuesto a dar nombres (risas).

Segundo, cada vez que finaliza un torneo sus compañeros por lo menos juegan un gol mas.

Acerca de otros grandes polistas, Bautista resume, “Facundo Pieres es un gran jugador. Piki Díaz Alberdi, impresionante ju-gador, históricamente no del todo montado pero una condición espectacular, superdotado”.

De la nueva generación destaca a “Magoo Laprida y Tomás Garcia del Río. “Pelón” Stirling me gusta cada día mas, el “ne-grito” Juan Gris Zabaleta, exquisito, me encanta. La garra del “Sapo” Caset y veo un futuro intenso en Polito Pieres. Nicolás Pieres ya es una realidad que tendrá su oportunidad de oro el año que viene”.

EL POLO

“A veces me regañan, pero creo que el polo es un hobby.

‘No señor’ me dicen, ‘el polo es un deporte’, sí pero es un ho-bby y lo traen los caballos. Por eso creo que uno goza del polo constantemente, lo va leyen-do, averigua por los caballos y siempre va pensando que va a jugar después, haciéndolo in-teresante, una gran distracción, permitiendo a uno jugarlo en momentos en que esta con la cabeza completa, concentrado en lo que esta haciendo.

POPURRI

Inglaterra:

“No, no me gusta el clima, soy muy malo para jugar polo mojado. Pero eso dije cuando me dijeron Palm Beach, digo no, pero no nunca.

Salud:

No he jugado por estar lesionado, el año pasado me caí y quedó mal el hombro y me tuvieron que hacer una cirugía. Hoy juego mi primera práctica y la verdad que me duele todo. Es la razón por la cual no jugué la Copa de Oro de Ellerstina (fue campeón el año pasado), tan competitiva, que exige estar al 100% de las condiciones. Cumplo siete meses sin jugar pero gracias a Dios en franca mejoría.

Importancia del tercer jugador en los 26 goles:

Mucha, los 26 goles en Estados Unidos es polo de a tres, no sólo en 26 de handicap, en 20 también. Un equipo equilibrado en todas sus áreas, otorga mayor solidez.

Árbitros

Nunca hablo de los árbitros, disculpe (risas).

Festejando con champagne en el Jockey con mis dos amigos, Guillermo Fernández LLanos y Álvaro Gómez, estuve a punto de perder el avión de regreso, festejando el triunfo en el primer Mundialito.

MENSAJE

No lo haría, pues me gusta mantener un perfil bajo. Entre amigos diría que es hora de hablar un poquitico (sic) más del espectáculo, que han hecho bastante pero hay que mejorarlo.

La Tolerancia cero, si es así es buena pero no cuando el “cono del silencio” no se aplica por igual.

Nos hacemos esa pregunta en la tribuna y aún en ese silencio el espectáculo es bueno.

Ahora, en lo personal si me pregunta, estoy madurando (risas), hablo poquito con los referees. Quisiera no hablar pero me enseñaron que a veces le toca hablar a uno, para que los compañeros no se enojen demasiado (risas) es más fácil que sancionen al 0 que al 9.

Me han cobrado uno que otro técnico, tengo unas fotos en la caballerizas de Estados Unidos donde estoy diciendo “Yo” a un juez, con Eduardo y Javier en igual gesto, foto que sacó Snoopy.

Hombre íntegro, apasionado, la lealtad su filosofía de vida y aunque no es ninguna “Monjita”, es sencillamente un buen tipo. m

It was not just another season. The polo in Sotogrande provided some great memories, entertainment and splendour. It was a top sporting occasion that was over

as the summer ended but which left every polo lover with a good feeling and a great sense of enthusiasm for what is to come.

2011 will be a very special year for the organisers of the International Polo Tournament held on Sotogrande’s fields in the month of August.

The fortieth anniversary of one of the most important tournaments in international polo will soon be upon us and Santa María, the organising club, is preparing to host it in style.

The importance of what is to come, however, was only emphasised by what has passed. The 39th BMW Interna-

tional Polo Tournament was so good in every respect that the enthusiasm for the coming year is now even greater than it was.

When an event combines to perfection a high standard of sport with the same quality of organisation it cannot be ignored, and there is a desire for the months to go by quickly so that the excitement and fun at Santa María Polo Club can be relived. This is precisely the feeling the last event left us with, creating greater expectations for 2011.

As far as the sporting action itself was concerned, the 39th tournament delighted us with the presence of some great teams.

Ellerston, one of the most important polo setups in the world, arrived in Sotogrande for the first time, and they did

so in style. And not just because patron James Packer’s mega yacht was moored in these Mediterranean waters, but also because they were the big champions of the season following their victory in the Gold Cup.

The final in which they clinched their title was, undoubtedly, one of the best in recent years at Santa María Polo Club. El-lerston and their rivals, Lechuza Caracas (another team that arrived in Sotogrande after several years’ absence) offered a magnificent sporting spectacle which provided the best end to a great event. Their stars, Facundo Pieres for Ellerston and Juan Martín Nero for Lechuza played a big role in ensuring this was the case.

The gold went to Ellerston, the Silver Cup was lifted by Le-chuza Caracas and the bronze fell to Ahmibah. Three great champions for a memorable tournament.

The Uruguayan Santiago Stirling deserves a special mention as the youngest player in the tournament organised by Santa María Polo Club, lifting the Gold Cup for the second year running. Last year he did it with Dos Lunas and this year, with another great performance, he was crowned champion with Ellerston.

In the Medium and Low-goal competitions, which also con-tributed a great deal to making the International Polo Tour-nament a first-rate sporting occasion, the prominent teams were I Lovka El Corzo and Ayala Esperanza, with the former winning the Gold Cup and the latter winning the silver and bronze.

In the Low-goal competition, the trophies were inscribed with the names of El Fortín, the notable winner of the Gold Cup, and Silex, winner of the Bronze and Silver Cups. m

No fue una temporada más. El polo en Sotogrande nos dejó grandes recuerdos, espectáculo y grandiosidad. Un encuentro deportivo de altura que se fue con el verano, pero que dejó en todos los amantes del polo un buen sabor de boca y un fuerte entusiasmo por lo que vendrá.

El 2011 será un año muy especial para el organizador del Torneo Internacional de Polo que todos los años se celebra en sus canchas de Sotogrande durante el mes de agosto.

Pronto llegará el cuarenta aniversario de uno de los torneos más importantes del calendario internacional de polo y Santa

María, su club, se prepara para celebrarlo por todo lo alto.

La importancia de lo que vendrá, sin embargo, se ve realzada por lo que pasó. Lo que nos dejó el 39º Torneo Internacional BMW de Polo fue tan bueno, desde todo punto de vista, que el entusiasmo para el año que viene es mayor.

Cuando un evento combina a la perfección un alto nivel deportivo con idéntica calidad organizativa no se puede pasar por alto, y las ganas de que los meses pasen rápido para volver a vivir la emoción y diversión en el Santa María Polo Club van en aumento. Eso, precisamente, es lo que dejó la


pasada edición y lo que genera una mayor expectativa para el 2011.

En lo estrictamente deportivo, el 39º edición del Torneo Internacional BMW de Polo nos deleitó con la presencia de grandes equipos.

Ellerston, una de las organizaciones de polo más importantes del mundo, llegó por primera vez a Sotogrande, y su desembarco fue a lo grande. No sólo por el gran barco de su patrón, James Packer, que atracó en estas aguas mediterráneas, sino porque fue el gran campeón de la temporada al llevarse la Copa de Oro.

Lo hizo en una final que, sin lugar a dudas, fue de las mejores de los últimos años en el Santa María Polo Club. Ellerston y su rival, Lechuza Caracas, (otro equipo que llegaba a Sotogrande tras varios años de ausencia) ofrecieron un grandioso espectáculo deportivo que fue el mejor cierre para un gran evento. Sus figuras, Facundo Pieres en Ellerston y Juan Martín Nero en Lechuza fueron grandes responsables de que así fuese.

El oro fue para Ellerston, la Copa de Plata se la llevó Lechuza Caracas y el bronce fue a parar a manos de Ahmibah. Tres grandes campeones para una edición para enmarcar.

Mención especial merece el polista uruguayo Santiago Stirling, que siendo el jugador más joven del torneo que organiza el Santa María Polo Club levantó, por segundo año consecutivo, la Copa de Oro. El año pasado lo hizo con Dos Lunas y este año, con otra gran actuación, se consagró con Ellerston.

En el Mediano y Bajo Handicap, que también colaboran y mucho para que el Torneo Internacional de Polo tenga un 10 goles en lo deportivo, los protagonistas excluyentes fueron I Lovka El Corzo y Ayala Esperanza, el primero ganando la Copa de Oro y el segundo llevándose la plata y el bronce.

En el Bajo Handicap, los nombres propios a los trofeos los pusieron El Fortín, notable ganador de la Copa de Oro, y Silex, vencedor de las copas de bronce y plata. m

Forty years is a long time in anyone’s book. A lot has happened over the years and there is still much to come in the life of Santa María Polo Club. Just a few months before celebrating four decades of their most important tournament, the Gold Cup, La Bocha by Snoopy Polo talked to Ramón Mora Figueroa (Jr), chairman of Santa María Polo Club, the most important polo organisation in Spain and, without doubt, one of the best in the world.

Ramón Mora Figueroa (Jr) has been around polo since the cradle. His father played in Jerez from a very young age and instilled the sport in him and his brothers as

young children.

Don Ramón Mora, alongside his great friend Don Enrique Zobel, were responsible for polo’s emergence, development and consolidation in Sotogrande.

Ramón junior took over the legacy, aware of the responsibility and the enormous emotional commitment it involved, and now, 40 years after the first Gold Cup, Santa María Polo Club plays a leading role among the world polo elite.

But the story, of the family and the club, has many chapters.

The early years

“My father played polo in Jerez and his links to Sotogrande came via his great friend, Enrique Zobel. Together they took part in the polo that Enrique played in Spain every year. When Enroque Zobel stopped playing in Spain in 1969, Financiera Sotogrande asked my father to take charge of Sotogrande Polo Club as chairman”, Ramón Mora Figueroa Jr. recalls.

Ramón Mora Figueroa’s institutional relationship with polo in Sotogrande had begun.

It was a relatively short period, lasting until 1973 when he left the chairmanship. But it was the first stage in a relationship that has lasted to this day.

“With Enrique he won the Copa del Rey on three occasions in Madrid, in 1967, 1968 and 1969, but they never won the Sotogrande Gold Cup together”, says Mora Figueroa Jr. A curious piece of information given that they were the main driving forces behind polo in Sotogrande.

From 1974 to 1985, with Spain’s transition to democracy and its economic problems, polo in Sotogrande went somewhat into decline.

“In 1984 David Stirling arrived, the fields were moved to Paniagua and Enrique Zobel bought the land from Sotogrande S.A. to build the Río fields, and the polo moved to there. But it was an uncertain time, a process of change in which the person who effectively took the weight of responsibility on his shoulders, with all his vision, was David Stirling. He is an enormously courageous and visionary man and he threw everything, without any resources, into developing polo.

Following one of the saddest events in Andalusian polo, the equine plague, we persuaded my father, with the help of Enrique, to set up infrastructure in the area, because we had nothing in Sotogrande. Alongside Enrique we jointly built the Puente de Hierro fields and gradually he encouraged

us to keep part of the property. That was when we began a determined and continuous phase of development with sizeable investments on our part”.

In 1992, following his return from the United States, Ramón Mora Figueroa Jr. took greater control of polo in Sotogrande, now under the name of Santa María Polo Club.

“We had joint ownership of Río with Ayala España. I took on the management of the important fields and we started the growth process, led by David who always pushed me to stay one step ahead of events. It was a period of considerable development, full of personal experiences and difficulties and only David, myself and those close to us know just how tough it was”, says the chairman of Santa María Polo Club.

His love of polo and readiness to take on responsibilities meant he became engrossed in the development of the sport and the club. “I started this adventure as a hobby and I got more and more involved over time until, between us all, we created something very big”.

But for Ramón Mora Figueroa Jr. there was a turning point in the life of the club, which was when Los Pinos was bought. “From then on, a major long-term plan could be made. We started to think about everything we learned in previous processes and we knew where we were going”.

In parallel to the development of Santa María Polo Club,

Ramón Mora Figueroa Jr. also stepped up his playing. From playing with his brothers in the fields, where they used the leftovers from his father’s horses, he embarked on the adventure of taking part in the important tournaments in Sotogrande.

“In 1985 we set up a team with Manolo Prado, Tomás Fernández Llorente (who I have spent 26 years with, although now I manage the horses because I haven’t played for a long time) and Pepe Riglos. In the end Manolo couldn’t play anymore and my brother Pablo replaced him, and the first year we played with Pablo we won the Gold Cup”, he recalls.

The pillars of Sotogrande

When the names of his father and Enrique Zobel are mentioned, his expression suddenly changes. “I have had a very special relationship with Enrique. In his final years he taught me, with the way in which he dealt with his situation, many values that are difficult to explain if you don’t experience them first hand. I firmly believe Enrique helps us from up above every day. Now his son Iñigo, chairman of Ayala Polo Club, and I work together to continue in this spirit.

In the history of polo in Sotogrande there has been, there is and there will be people who fight for this, but there are two irreplaceable figures: Enrique Zobel and my father”.

The two pillars of polo in Sotogrande have continued their dream through their sons Ramón Mora and Iñigo Zobel, who have consolidated their project, and the interviewee agrees.

“Iñigo also has a huge passion for polo and his project, in my view, is very important for the area. And I think that between all of us we must be able to make much bigger changes to all of this. Either the area consolidates itself as a true polo destination, with at least 50 polo fi elds, or we will remain in lukewarm waters and, with the evolution of the sport and the competition there is around the world, they’ll try to take our place and we’ll be left in mediocrity.”

“We must make Sotogrande a ‘Polo Destination’ and ensure the important patrons have their place here, their property, so they settle here. Making sure they come should not be a titanic struggle every year. Iñigo understands it the same way I do and we’re in the same boat”.

The future

For Ramón Mora Figueroa (Jr), in the coming years “we will be whatever we are capable of creating and we have to achieve it between us.

The Andalusian Regional Government also sees it like this; the problem is we’ve had a few very crazy years, basically because we have built a lot, because it was easy, and the fi gures always added up.

In my view the Regional Government has legislated well, but the problem is that, like everything that happens so quickly, they have overlooked the fact, although it’s only right to be restrictive when it comes legislation, that the wheat must be separated from the chaff. It makes no sense that in this day and age, on rural land, with no intention of speculating but with a clear objective of building stables with a fi eld and houses so that polo patrons settle in the area, that this should have

become something impossible. The Regional Government understand, the problem is that it takes time to build it

into the legislation”.

For Mora Figueroa Jr. the example of Pilar in Argentina is the clearest model, as an economic driving force for top-quality deseasonalised tourism, of what it is hoped will be developed in this part of Andalusia. “They should experiment with a model on rural land where, with minimal density, they allow the construction of polo fi elds, stables and a home for the polo patron without the diffi culties that currently exist.

They must see the opportunity that Andalusia has with this model, which protects the land from speculation, and it can be done here. The area, which is basically all of Campo de Gibraltar and probably Andalusia, that already has specifi c projects like Ayala and La Capilla in San Roque and some other estates, is a territory that should be protected as rural land via a project based on polo. All under the umbrella of a project in the interests of Andalusia. Other estates in Campo de Gibraltar like Dos Lunas etc. should also come under the same banner because the opportunity, in my view, is for the whole of Andalusia”.

The polo patron

Although Ramón Mora Figueroa Jr. often feels that it is a struggle that is too diffi cult and too solitary, he is also aware that it is important to keep going.

“Life is a struggle and ultimately fi ghting for a project as wonderful as this gives you strength and makes you keep going. There is also the emotional side of it, my loyalty to my father and Enrique, which prevents me from faltering and makes me put the same enthusiasm into it as I had on the fi rst day”.

The 40th Gold Cup

“Rather than looking back I think the best thing to do is see

things from a long-term point of view”, Mora Figueroa Jr. argues in relation to the 40th anniversary of the Gold Cup to be organised by Santa María Polo Club in August 2011.

“I’m positive and I believe the future is bright. You have to look back, but to learn, to thank everyone who has helped and to keep going forward.

I’m becoming more and more certain, due to the dates and competition format, that there should be a maximum of eight teams in the Gold Cup. I also think the medium-goal competition has a great future. We will introduce one

or two changes next year to give it a push, because this level of the game is a natural breeding ground for

high-goal players”.

Mora Figueroa Jr. pointed out towards the end of the interview that they are working not just on the Summer International Tournament but also on the year-round polo season.

“I’m pressing my team to take advantage of year-round polo and we are already working on the Spring Season, which is looking great. We also have to encourage more polo in the winter and adapt the fi elds better to this time of year”.

“The important thing is that we are on the right path”, Ramón Mora Figueroa Jr. fi nally added.

Presidente del Santa María Polo ClubCuarenta años se dice pronto. Mucho ha sucedido durante ese tiempo y mucho queda aún por suceder en la vida del Santa María Polo Club. A pocos meses de celebrar las cuatro décadas de su trofeo más importante, la Copa de Oro, La Bocha by Snoopy Polo conversó con Ramón Mora Figueroa (h), Presidente del Santa María Polo Club, la entidad más importante de España y, sin dudas, una de las mejores del mundo.

El polo le es familiar a Ramón Mora Figueroa (h) desde la cuna. Su padre, que lo practicaba en Jerez desde muy joven, se lo fue inculcando, al igual que a sus hermanos, desde pequeño.

Fueron, Don Ramón Mora junto a su gran amigo, Don Enrique Zobel, los responsables de que el polo nazca, crezca y se consolide en Sotogrande.

Su hijo Ramón asumió el legado consciente de la responsabilidad y el enorme grado afectivo que implicaba y hoy, a 40 años de la disputa de la primera Copa de Oro, el Santa María Polo Club ocupa un lugar de privilegio en la élite del polo mundial.

Pero su historia, la familiar y la del club, tienen muchos capítulos.

Los comienzos

“Mi padre jugaba al polo en Jerez y su vinculación con Sotogrande llega a través de su gran amigo, Enrique Zobel. Juntos practicaron el polo todos los años que Enrique jugó en España. Cuando en el año 1969 Enrique Zobel deja de jugar en España, Financiera Sotogrande le pide a mi padre que se hiciese cargo del Club de Polo de Sotogrande como Presidente”, recuerda Ramón Mora Figueroa (h).

A partir de ese momento comienza la relación institucional de Ramón Mora-Figueroa con el polo de Sotogrande.

Fue un período relativamente corto, concretamente hasta el año 1973 que deja la Presidencia. Pero sería la primera etapa de una relación que se mantiene hasta nuestros días.

“Con Enrique ganaron tres veces la Copa del Rey, en 1967, 1968 y 1969 en Madrid, pero en cambio nunca jugaron juntos la Copa de Oro de Sotogrande”, aporta Mora Figueroa (h). Sin dudas un dato más que curioso tratándose de los principales impulsores del polo en Sotogrande.

Desde 1974 hasta 1985, coincidiendo con la transición política y los problemas económicos de España, el polo en Sotogrande cae en un cierto proceso de declive.

“En el año 1984 llega David Stirling, se produce la transición a las canchas de Paniagua, y Enrique (Zobel) le compra los terrenos a Sotogrande S.A para construir las canchas del Río y se empieza a jugar allí.

Pero es una situación incierta, un proceso de cambio donde básicamente el que asume el peso de la responsabilidad, con esa capacidad de visión que tiene, es David Stirling. Él es enormemente valiente y visionario y se lanza, sin recursos, a empujar el polo.

Tras sufrir uno de los hechos más tristes del polo en Andalucía, la peste equina, convencemos a mi padre, con la ayuda de Enrique, a montar una infraestructura en esta zona, ya que nosotros

tener fuerzas y continuar

no teníamos nada en Sotogrande. Junto a Enrique hacemos a medias las canchas de Puente de Hierro y poco a poco nos fue animando a que nos quedásemos con parte de la propiedad. Así empieza una constante evolución y una etapa de fuerte desarrollo con inversiones importantes por nuestra parte”.

En 1992, tras regresar de Estados Unidos, Ramón Mora Figueroa (h.) asume un mayor control del polo en Sotogrande, ya bajo el nombre de Santa María Polo Club.

“Nos quedamos con el pro-indiviso del Río con Ayala España, asumí la gestión de las canchas importantes y comenzamos el proceso del crecimiento, liderados por David Stirling que siempre me empujaba a ir un paso delante de los acontecimientos. Es una etapa de fuerte desarrollo y lleno de vivencias personales y dificultades que solo David, yo y algunos próximos a nosotros sabe lo difícil y duro que fue”, comenta el presidente del Santa María Polo Club.

Su afición por el polo y las ganas de asumir responsabilidades lo fueron “envolviendo” en el desarrollo de este deporte y del club. “Comienzo en esta aventura por afición y me fui involucrando con el paso del tiempo y al final, entre todos, hemos hecho algo muy grande”.

Pero para Ramón Mora Figueroa (h) hay un punto de inflexión en la vida del club y ese cambio lo marca la compra de Los Pinos. “A partir de esa adquisición se puede hacer un plan a largo plazo y se comienza a proyectar pensando en todo lo aprendido en procesos anteriores y sabiendo hacia donde íbamos”.

Paralelamente al desarrollo del Santa María Polo Club, Ramón Mora Figueroa (h) intensifica también la práctica del polo. De jugar con sus hermanos en el campo, donde usaban los restos de los caballos de su padre, se lanza a la aventura de formar parte de los torneos importantes en Sotogrande.

“En 1985 armamos un equipo con Manolo Prado, Tomás Fernández Llorente, (con quien llevamos juntos 26 años, ahora gestionando los caballos porque yo hace mucho que ya no juego), y Pepe Riglos. Resulta que Manolo no puede jugar y lo suple mi hermano Pablo y ese primer año que jugamos juntos con Pablo ganamos la Copa de Oro”, recuerda.

Los pilares de Sotogrande

Cuando se le mencionan los nombres de su padre y de Enrique Zobel su expresión cambia repentinamente. “Con Enrique he tenido una relación muy especial. En su última etapa me ha enseñado, con su manera de afrontar su situación, muchos valores que, o los vives in situ, o es difícil que te los cuenten. Creo firmemente que Enrique nos ayuda desde el cielo cada día. Ahora, su hijo Iñigo presidente de Ayala Polo Club, y yo, trabajamos juntos para continuar con ese espíritu.

Durante la historia del polo en Sotogrande ha habido, hay y habrá, gente que peleamos por esto pero hay dos figuras que son insustituibles: Enrique Zobel y mi Padre”.

Los dos pilares del polo en Sotogrande han tenido en sus hijos, Ramón Mora e Iñigo Zobel, la continuidad del sueño, del proyecto y de la consolidación y así lo ve también el entrevistado.

“Iñigo tiene también una enorme afi ción por el polo y cuenta con un proyecto, que desde mi punto de vista, es muy importante para la zona y creo que entre todos tenemos que ser capaces de darle a esto un cambio mucho más profundo. O la zona se consolida como un destino verdadero de polo, donde tienen que haber por lo menos 50 canchas, o si nó nos quedaremos en agua tibia y al fi nal, con la evolución y la competencia que hay en el mundo, nos tratarán de quitar el sitio y nos quedaremos en la mediocridad.

Debemos convertir Sotogrande en un “Destino Polo” y conseguir que los patrones importantes tengan “SU” sitio aquí, su propiedad, que se establezcan y que hacerlos venir no sea una lucha titánica cada año.

Iñigo lo entiende igual que yo y estamos en el mismo barco”.

El futuro

Para Ramón Mora Figueroa (h), de cara a lo que se viene, “seremos lo que seamos capaces de crear y lo tenemos que conseguir entre todos.

La Junta de Andalucía también lo entiende así, el problema es que hemos vivido unos años muy disparatados, básicamente porque se ha construido mucho, porque era fácil, y los números siempre daban.

Desde mi punto de vista la Junta ha legislado bien pero el problema es que como todo ha ocurrido tan de prisa, se les ha olvidado que, si bien es acertado ser restrictivos en materia

de legislación, se debe separar el grano de la paja. No tiene sentido que hoy en día en suelos rústicos, sin ningún afán de especular sino con el claro objetivo de hacer unas cuadras con cancha y unas casas para que los patrones de polo se instalen en esta zona, se haya convertido en algo imposible. Ellos (la Junta de Andalucía) lo entienden, el tema es que lleva su tiempo y su encaje legal”.

Para Mora Figueroa (h) el ejemplo de Pilar en Argentina es el modelo, como motor económico del turismo de máxima calidad desestacionalizado, más claro de lo que se busca desarrollar en esta zona de Andalucía. “Que experimenten un modelo en suelo rústico donde se permita construir, con una densidad ínfi ma, canchas, cuadras y una vivienda para el patrón de polo sin las difi cultades que existen hoy en día. Deben ver la oportunidad que tiene Andalucía con ese modelo, que protege el territorio de la especulación, y aquí se puede hacer. La zona, que es básicamente todo el Campo de Gibraltar y probablemente Andalucía, pero ya con proyectos concretos como Ayala, La Capilla, en San Roque y alguna fi nca más, es el territorio que debería quedar protegido como suelo rústico mediante un proyecto con base en el polo. Todo ello amparado por un proyecto de interés andaluz. Aparte de otras fi ncas en el Campo de Gibraltar como Dos Lunas etc…que también deberían entrar con el mismo enfoque porque la oportunidad es desde mi punto de vista para toda Andalucía.

Al patrón de polo o empresario le diría, que estando en esta zona única, con territorio virgen, excelente clima, la proximidad con Inglaterra y la oportunidad de tener un pie en Sotogrande, ahora también por el ciclo económico es el mejor momento

para apostar, pero si no les damos las facilidades se irán e invertirán en otro lugar”.

Si bien muchas veces Ramón Mora Figueroa (h) siente que es una lucha demasiado dura y solitaria, también es consciente que se debe seguir empujando.

“La vida es lucha y en el fondo luchar por un proyecto tan bonito como éste a uno le hace tener fuerzas y continuar. También esta la parte emocional, la lealtad hacia mi padre y Enrique, que no te dejan desfallecer y ponerle las mismas ganas que desde el primer día”.

40º Copa de Oro

“Creo que mas que mirar hacia atrás la ventaja esta en ver las cosas desde un largo recorrido”, argumenta Mora Figueroa (h) con respecto al 40º aniversario de la Copa de Oro que organiza el Santa María Polo Club en Agosto de 2011.

“Soy positivo y creo que el futuro es prometedor. Mirar para atrás sí, pero para aprender, para agradecer a toda

la gente que ha ayudado y para seguir hacia adelante.

Cada vez estoy más convencido, por fechas y por forma de disputa, que para la Copa de Oro tiene que haber ocho

equipos máximo. También creo que el Mediano Handicap tiene mucho futuro. Le introduciremos algún cambio el año que viene para darle un empujón, ya que en ese nivel de juego hay una parte de la cantera natural del Alto Handicap.

Mora Figueroa (h) confesó, sobre el fi nal de la entrevista, que se esta trabajando no sólo para el Torneo Internacional de Verano sino para la temporada de polo de todo el año.

“A mi equipo de trabajo lo estoy presionando para aprovechar el polo durante todo el año y ya estamos trabajando en la Temporada de Primavera, que pinta muy bien. También tenemos que conseguir que se juegue más polo en invierno y adaptar mejor las canchas para esa parte del año”.

“Lo importante es que vamos por buen camino”, agregó fi nalmente Ramón Mora Figueroa (h).

‘INTO THE GOLD’ by Eugenia LapridaHaving grown up in a family of polo players, Eugenia Laprida (b. Buenos Aires, Argentina, 1984), an artist now residing in Dubai, knows the sport well and, rather than play it, she decided to paint it.

She is a graduate in Fine Arts and Visual Arts from the University of the Argentine Social Museum in Buenos Aires.

She has exhibited her work at prestigious events such as the Argentine Polo Open at the Palermo ground, Buenos Aires, from 2002 to 2006; La Varzea Polo Club, Lisbon, in 2006; the Nation’s Cup at Desert Palm, Dubai, in 2010 and the Threadneedle Gold Cup at the Arabian Ranches Polo and Equestrian Club, Dubai, in 2010.

Important figures in the sport such as Ernesto Trotz, Camilo Bautista, Ignacio Novillo Astrada, Nachi Heguy and Gonzalito Pieres own her works.

“After painting polo extensively over the years, I felt the need to break away from what had become the norm among artists who paint this subject, who reduce it to a mere colourful representation of the established motifs of the sport: the horse in movement, playing, speed, the player about to hit the ball etc. I think there is much more to polo than what a spectator sees in a match, which is why I started to tell the story, going further than mere representation to express a view, to criticise, to contribute new ideas and avoid undervaluing those who belong to this world with paintings that say nothing. The work of art has to contribute

something, to value the effort, passion and dedication that this sport requires and must also relate to the context of contemporary art in which it lies”, Laprida explains to La Bocha by Snoopy Polo.

Into the Gold

In my recent work I avert from the competitive side of the sport, the speed, the players and horses with names and context, my intention is to represent and transmit what’s beyond the match, other factors that determine the sport, and how this factors have taken it to becoming a lifestyle.

With the series “Into the gold” my objective was to create moments, freeze, immortalize and submerge them into an immense golden space. No distractions, just the figures and the open, the infinite. Characters that wait, that observe, that contemplate a scene which we have the freedom to imagine. Every moment in polo is important, the strategy talk in between chukker, the grooms, friends and family waiting, following the game from outside; the preparation of elements of use, fresh air, nature…lifestyle

Large scale canvases were needed to translate the proportion of the space required for this sport. The landscape, the context and the country, are not important, just keep the essence of the atmosphere.

‘INTO THE GOLD’ por Eugenia LapridaHabiendo crecido en una familia de jugadores de polo, Eugenia Laprida ( Buenos Aires, Argentina 1984), la artista que hoy reside en Dubai, conoce bien el deporte y en lugar de jugarlo, decidió pintarlo.

Posee el titulo de Técnica en bellas artes y Artes Visuales en la Universidad del Museo Social Argentino en Buenos Aires.

Expuso sus trabajos en eventos de alto prestigio como lo es el Abierto Argentino de Polo en las canchas de Palermo, Buenos Aires, Argentina del 2002 al 2006; La Varzea Polo Club, Lisboa, Portugal 2006; Nation’s Cup, Dessert Palm, Dubai, 2010 y Threadneedle Gold Cup, Arabian Ranches Polo and Equestrian Club, Dubai, 2010.

Poseen sus obras nombres importantes del deporte como lo son: Ernesto Trotz, Camilo Bautista, Ignacio Novillo Astrada, Nachi Heguy y Gonzalito Pieres.

“Luego de haber pintado durante años muchos cuadros de polo, sentí la necesidad de romper con lo que ya estaba tan visto en artistas que se dedican a este tema, que lo reducen a una mera representación colorida de los cánones establecidos del deporte que son: el caballo en movimiento, la jugada, la velocidad, el jugador en postura por pegarle a la bocha etc. Creo que hay mucho más en el polo que lo que un espectador ve en un partido, y por eso me propuse contarlo, ir mas allá de la representación, opinar, criticar, aportar nuevas ideas, y no subestimar a los que pertenecen a este mundo con cuadros que no dicen nada. Hay que hacer obras que

aporten, que valoren el esfuerzo, la pasión y dedicación que este deporte requiere y que al mismo tiempo se relacionen con el contexto del arte contemporáneo en el que se encuentran”, explica Laprida a La Bocha by Snoopy Polo.

Into the Gold

En mi obra reciente, me separo de la cara competitiva del deporte: la velocidad, los jugadores y los caballos con nombres y contexto. Mi intención es representar y transmitir lo que hay más allá del partido, otros factores cruciales para el deporte y cómo esos factores han influido para que se convierta en un modo de vida.

Con la serie “Into the Gold”, mi objetivo era crear momentos, congelarlos, inmortalizarlos y sumergirlos en un inmenso espacio dorado. Sin distracciones, solo figuras y el vacío, el infinito. Personajes que esperan, observan, contemplan una escena que tenemos la libertad de imaginar. Cada momento del polo es importante: la charla estratégica entre los chukkers, los mozos de cuadra, los amigos y la familia que esperan siguiendo el juego desde fuera, la preparación de los elementos que se van a usar, el aire puro, la naturaleza... Un modo de vida.

Para trasladar la proporción del espacio necesario para este deporte se necesitaban lienzos de gran tamaño. El paisaje, el contexto y el campo no son importantes, sólo importa mantener la esencia de la atmósfera. Más información: www.eugenialapridapolo.com m

Tres Marías, new champions of the French Open

An attractive fi nal brought to a close the tenth French Open, applauded for its good play and organisation.

The main fi eld of the Chantilly Polo Club witnessed a great fi nal between Tres Marías and HB Polo Team. Victory and the title went to the Tres Marías side, comprising patron Hugues Morin, Frenchman Pierre Henri N´Goumou and Brazilians Joao and Olavo Novaes.

A close 7 goals to 6 win meant that Tres Marías were crowned as the new champions of the 10th French Open.The third-place playoff was decided in favour of the Saint

Mesme team, featuring the Argentines Christian Nordheimer and Juan Ambroggio, who overcame In The Wings (Alejandro Agote and Guillermo Terrera) by 9 goals to 8 in another great fi nal.

The deciding match in the Subsidiary Cup (held under the round robin format) was won by Tom Taylor, who defeated Marquard-Media and Polo de Deauville in successive matches.

A total of nine 14- to 16-goal teams (divided into two groups) took part in the competition.

The quartet of Hugues Morin, Pierre Henri N´Goumou, Joao and Olavo Novaes won the tournament held at the Chantilly Polo Club in its tenth year when they defeated HB Polo Team by 7 goals to 6.

El cuarteto formado por Hugues Morin, Pierre Henri N´Goumou, Joao y Olavo Novaes se llevó la décima edición del torneo que se disputó en el Club de Polo de Chantilly al derrotar a HB Polo Team por 7 a 6.

Una atractiva defi nición le puso punto fi nal al Open de Francia, que en su décima edición se robó todos los aplausos por buen juego y organización.

La cancha principal del Club de Polo de Chantilly fue testigo de una gran fi nal entre Tres Marías y HB Polo Team. El triunfo y el título fue para la formación de Tres Marías con el patrón Hugues Morin, el francés Pierre Henri N´Goumou y los brasileños Joao y Olavo Novaes.

Un ajustado 7 a 6 coronó a Tres Marías como nuevo campeón del X Abierto de Francia.

El partido por el tercer puesto se defi nió a favor del equipo de Saint Mesme, con los argentinos Christian Nordheimer y Juan Ambroggio, que superó a In The Wings, (Alejandro Agote y Guillermo Terrera) por 9 a 8 en otra gran fi nal.

Finalmente la defi nición de la Copa Subsidiaria (disputada bajo la modalidad round robin) tuvo como ganador a Tom Tailor que derrotó sucesivamente a Marquard – Media y Polo de Deauville.

Un total de 9 equipos de 14 a 16 goles de valorización, agrupados en dos zonas, formaron parte del certamen.

Swimming has been used for many years as a method for training horses. It is considered good exercise for cardiovascular development and it also reduces to a minimum the strain caused by surfaces (grass, sand or ground, for instance) in horses’ limbs. Swimming can be used as an alternative in the horse’s daily work as part of its training programme, whether in a pool or in open waters.

It is also used as an alternative physiotherapy and rehabilitation method for horses that have to stop physical conditioning owing to muscular-skeletal injuries and in order to avoid the loss of muscle that takes place during periods of rest.

Federico Echevest, better known as ‘Fierita’, has been using the swimming method for horses to great success in Sotogrande, Spain, for the past few years.

We decided to ‘immerse ourselves’ in the subject through him and find out about the benefits and results that can be obtained from swimming for horses.

“My aim is to change the horse’s whole mindset with swimming. Generally the horses they give me to work with come from high-level competitive polo, with a great deal of stress, and I soothe them, take away their stress. Horses have a great deal of respect for water and the work you do with them starts to change their character. It’s a method that can’t be done just anywhere; fortunately I have the means to do it”, says Federico with water up to his waist, swimming with a horse in the River Guadiaro, Sotogrande.

“The horse learns best when it is completely relaxed and the water helps achieve this state of relaxation; it’s ideal

for working with the animal, rehabilitating or training it, depending on the case in question. Getting in the water, swimming with the horse and seeing it enjoy itself is very gratifying”, he adds.

His early days working with horses were in Ayacucho, Argentina, his country of origin. At 19 years of age he worked for Christian Laprida, who took him to Palm Beach, USA. There he learned of the swimming method used in training and rehabilitating horses and he was hooked.

It was in Palm Beach, with a mare given to him by polo player Andres Weiz, that he had one of the most enriching experiences of his career.

“Andres Weiz brought me a mare that his vet had told him had to be put down. He asked me to treat her and since he had his horses near the lake in Palm Beach I started working with her”, Fierita recalls.

“It took me half an hour to get her in the water, a short distance from the stables, because the mare had lost the muscle in one of her legs and she was dragging it. She had had a big knock, she was paralysed, and she lost all her muscle. It looked like a major challenge and learning process and I started work with the mare. At the beginning she’d swim two metres and be exhausted, but in time, after two months of training in the water, the mare was playing two chukkas of polo. She stopped dragging her leg, she recovered the musculature and could play polo perfectly

well. It was one of the most satisfying cases in my work and it motivated me to carry on”.

His work and the sport of polo took him to Sotogrande, where he arrived in 2003. “On the second day after I arrived I was already swimming with horses. I had the Guadiaro River, which is ideal for working with horses because it has a weak current, the perfect place”.

Although ‘Fierita’ admits that swimming for horses has not yet taken off like it has in the United States or England, slowly, thanks to its good results, it is being taken up by polo patrons or horse owners who want to train or rehabilitate their animals.

Echevest explains that this method requires a “persistent and patient daily routine in which the big changes in the animal take time and a lot of hard work”.

Swimming for horses is, in Fierita’s view, aside from an effective method for rehabilitating horses following injury, an ideal supplement to training, as well as a way of preventing injuries.

“It’s good for preventing injuries, to avoid wearing out the animal. To get a horse in tip-top condition it has to train a lot, run, work at speed, and that’s where the stress comes from. Swimming helps the horse by increasing its fitness, building muscle, and you change its training routine which is also very beneficial”.

Echevest explains that swimming is not necessarily just for competition horses; it can also be used for colt, as an alternative breaking method.

“The colt’s initial breaking can be done in the water, to give it confidence, and at two-and-a-half years of age it is already practically tame and ready to start learning the rest. It’s an alternative to traditional breaking methods. Working with the colt in the water, gradually getting it to swim, then putting a saddle on it and finally mounting it helps to bring out its skills and makes subsequent work out of the water much easier.

If a young horse swims every day for a month, even with no breaking, it already has the basics. From then on you can train it without any problems; it won’t hit out at all”.

For polo ponies in particular, horses that Fierita works a lot with, the patrons want their horses “to be fit, to go out on the field and to stand up to a chukka well, and the water gives them that. Swimming oxygenates the blood and when they train and run they are much better. Naturally they also wear out and suffer less”.

“After so many years working in the water with such a variety of horses, I can see and feel how they change significantly. Swimming relaxes them, takes away their stress, particularly with polo horses, which suffer a lot from stress because of the dynamics of the game. The water strengthens them, gives them air and changes their mindset”, Fierita finally adds. m

La natación es utilizada desde hace muchos años como un método de entrenamiento del caballo. La misma se considera un buen ejercicio para el desarrollo cardiovascular y además reduce al mínimo la tensión diaria que produce la superfi cie (césped, arena o tierra por ejemplo) en las extremidades de los caballos.

Baños de salud

El ejercicio de natación se puede ofrecer como alternativa en el trabajo diario del caballo formando parte de su programa de entrenamiento, ya sea en piscina o en aguas abiertas.

Es utilizada también como método alternativo de fi sioterapia y rehabilitación de caballos que tienen que retirarse de su pre-paración física por lesiones músculo-esqueléticas y en donde se quiere evitar la atrofi a muscular que se produce durante el tiempo de reposo.

Federico Echevest, más conoci-do como “Fierita” lleva aplican-do desde hace algunos años en Sotogrande, España el método de la natación en los caballos con muy buen resultado.

A través de él nos quisimos “empa-par” en el tema y conocer de cerca los benefi cios y resultados que tiene la natación aplicada a los caballos.

“Mi objetivo es cambiarle el “chip” al caballo aplicando la natación. Ge-neralmente los caballos que me dan para trabajar vienen de la alta com-petencia de polo, con mucho stress y yo los amanso, les quito el stress. El caballo le tiene mucho respeto al agua y con el trabajo que vos le hacés empieza a cambiar el carácter. Es un método que no se pueden hacer en todos lados, yo por suerte tengo el medio para hacerlo”, dice Federico con el agua hasta la cintura y nadando con un caballo en el Río Guadiaro, Sotogrande.

“Cuando el caballo está súper manso es cuando aprende todo y en el agua uno logra que alcance esta tranquilidad, ideal para trabajar con él y recuperarlo o entrenarlo, dependiendo del caso puntual. Meterme al agua, nadar con el caballo y verlo disfrutar, es muy gratifi cante”, agrega.

Sus comienzos con los caballos fueron en Ayacucho. Argentina, de donde es oriundo. A a los 19 años ya trabajaba para Chris-tian Laprida quién lo llevó a Palm Beach, Estados Unidos. Allí conoció el método de la natación aplicada al entrenamiento y recuperación del caballo y quedó enganchado con el tema.

Fue en Palm Beach, con una yegua que le dio el polista Andrés Weiz, que vivió una de las experiencias más enriquecedoras

de su trabajo.

“Andrés Weiz me trajo una yegua que su veterinario le había dicho que la tenía que matar. Me pidió que la tratase y como él tenía los caballos cerca del lago en Palm Beach la em-pecé a trabajar”, recuerda Fierita.

“Me costaba media hora hacerla llegar al agua, a una corta distan-cia de las cuadras, porque la yegua había perdido el músculo en una de sus patas y la arrastraba. Sufrió un fuerte golpe, una paralítica, y perdió

todo el músculo. Me pareció un gran desafío, un aprendizaje y comencé a trabajar con la yegua.

Al principio la nadaba dos metros y se agotaba y con el tiempo, luego de dos meses de entre-namiento en el agua, la yegua estaba jugando dos chukkers de polo. Pasó de arrastar la pata, a recuperar la musculatura y jugar perfectamente al polo. Ese fue uno de los casos que más contento me puso de mi trabajo y más me motivó a seguir adelante”.

Su trabajo y el polo lo llevaron a Sotogrande, donde desem-barcó en el año 2003. “Al segundo día que llegué ya estaba nadando caballos. Tenía el río Guadiaro, que es ideal para tra-bajar con caballos ya que no tiene mucha corriente, el lugar perfecto”.

Si bien “Fierita” reconoce que la natación para caballos toda-vía no tiene tanto auge como en Estados Unidos o Inglaterra lentamente, y a base de buenos resultados, se lo va inculcando en los patrones de polo o dueños de caballos que los quieren trabajar o recuperar.

Echevest explica que esta metodología necesita de “una rutina diaria, de insistencia y paciencia, donde los cambios grandes en un animal se ven con el tiempo y cuesta mucho”.

La natación en los caballos es, para Fierita, además de un efi-caz método de recuperación de lesiones en los caballos, un complemento ideal para el entrenamiento además de una for-ma de prevención de las lesiones.

“Sirve para evitar lesiones, para no desgastarlos. Un caballo para ponerlo en plena forma tenes que entrenarlo mucho, co-rrerlo, hacerle trabajos de velocidad y ahí es donde proviene el stress. Con la natación vos los ayudás, les das aire, músculo y les cambiás la rutina de entrenamiento que es muy beneficioso también”.

Echevest explica que la natación no necesariamente está limi-tada a los caballos de competencia sino que también se puede aplicar en potrillos, como método de alternativa a la doma.

“Se empieza la doma del potrillo en el agua, a darle confianza y a los dos años y medio ya está prácticamente manso para que pueda aprender el resto. Es una alternativa a la doma. El estar con el potrillo en el agua, empezar a nadarlo de a poco, luego ponerle una montura, para finalmente montarlo hace que de a poco se le vaya sacando las “mañas” y facilite muchí-simo el trabajo posterior fuera del agua.

A un potro nadándolo diariamente durante un mes podés de-jarlo, a falta de la doma, con lo básico ya hecho. A partir de ahí podes enseñarlo sin problemas, sin que te pegue un golpe”.

Con el polo en particular, caballos con los que Fierita trabaja mucho, los patrones le piden que sus caballos “tengan aire, que vayan a la cancha y aguanten bien un chukker y eso el agua se lo da. Al nadar oxigenan la sangre y cuando entrenan y co-rren están mucho mejor. Además, lógicamente, de desgastarse y sufrir menos.”

“Después de tantos años trabajando en el agua con caballos tan distintos, veo y siento como cambian de una forma notable. La natación los relaja, les saca el stress, sobre todo al caballo de polo, que lo sufre mucho por la dinámica del juego. El agua los fortalece, les da aire y les cambia el chip”, agrega finalmente Fierita. m

Dubai Gold Cup 2011

First, this year a Silver Cup will be held, a new event for 2011 that will act as a prelude to the eagerly awaited Gold Cup.

This competition will take place from February 16 to 25 and is for 12- to 15-goal teams, another important new feature with the standard of the teams going up from the 2010 limit of 12 goals.

From March 2 to 11, the 2nd Gold Cup will be held, and eight teams have so far confirmed their presence, including the title holder, patron Rashid Al Habtoor’s Mahra Polo Team, Faisal Yabroudi’s DCC Sumaya, Habtoor Polo (patroned by Mohammed Al Habtoor, founder and director of the tournament), Amr Zedan’s Zedan Polo, Saeed Bin Drai’s Dubai Falcons, Stuart Wrigley’s Rhinos, Raja Abuljebain’s Sxc Polo and a team whose name is yet to be decided, patroned by Tarik Fatheldein and Faris Yabouni.

The tournament will be played at the Dubai Polo & Equestrian Club under the sponsorship of his highness Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, governor of Dubai.

There will be four Hurlingham Polo Association-certified referees and, like last year, there will be a wide variety of recreational activities and hospitality areas, and a big party to bring to a close the event.

Esta competición será del 16 al 25 de febrero para equipos de 12 a 15 goles de handicap, otro punto relevante a destacar ya que se elevó el nivel de los equipos con respecto a la edición 2010 que tenía un límite de 12 goles de handicap.

La segunda edición de la Dubai Gold Cup ya tiene fecha de disputa confirmada y varias novedades que realzan aún más este torneo, el más importante de los Emiratos Árabes Unidos que cuenta con la organización de Habtoor Polo.

He was asked to step in as chairman of the Federation of International Polo in the wake of a tragedy and, as a man of responsibility and of his word, he accepted the challenge.

The argentine Eduardo Huergo now holds the reins of the FIP with a sense of responsibility and a great deal of enthusiasm in order to “continue spreading polo around the world”.

The FIP, after much toing and froing in late 2009, had appointed the Australian James Ashton as interim chairman.

A 69-year-old Ashton assumed the chairmanship of the FIP in November 2009 after its occupant at the time, Patrick Guerrand-Hermes, was forced to resign by the three big nations in world polo: the United Kingdom, Argentina and the United States.

After a few months in the role Ashton lost his life. It was during a polo match in Thailand (the chairman was touring South-East Asia to familiarise himself with the development of the sport in the region) that he suffered a fall with tragic consequences.

“Regrettably, it was a tragedy that made me the FIP chairman”, Huergo explained. “It’s true that I have been involved with the FIP for many years as one of the Argentina representatives, but nevertheless it was a surprise, and above all a great source of pride, to be given such a responsibility”, he added.

The FIP boss, in the few months he has been in the role, has been pleased with the “receptiveness and goodwill of the polo world. There is a great desire to collaborate, to organise tournaments. The associations support the FIP and are aware of the need to work alongside us”.

For Huergo, the FIP’s mission is “horizontal, by which I mean its task is to spread polo around the world. If the standard can be raised then all the better, but I believe that if things are done well it goes up by itself ”.

In the short term, one of the main objectives of the FIP is to organise regional tournaments in the countries where the standard of polo is still relatively low. “The idea is to organise these regional tournaments which will attract players with a slightly higher handicap in order to raise the quality. The federations would be represented and the standard of play would be lifted, improving the development of polo in these countries”.

The next World Championships are just around the corner. To be held in Argentina, the most important tournament organised by the FIP has been scheduled for September 2011. On the competition, Huergo said that “it’s a tournament that assembles a large number of countries to play at an intermediate level, with around 30 taking part. The idea is to keep holding the tournament at three-year intervals despite the desire to organise it more frequently. The thing is, the World Championships are held using horses provided by the host country and this is not a task that everyone is capable of. Fortunately Argentina has the ponies and can meet this responsibility, which is no small thing”.

Canada has all the votes to be the host for the following World Championships and Spain is a major contender to host the 2017 event.

Finally, Huergo revealed that the FIP also plans to organise a tournament with a higher handicap. “A Nations Cup, a 20-goal competition involving eight teams”.

Una desgracia lo puso en el sillón presidencial de la Federación Internacional de Polo y él, hombre de responsabilidad y palabra, aceptó el desafío.

El argentino Eduardo Huergo lleva hoy lleva las riendas de la FIP con responsabilidad y entusiasmo para que “se siga extendiendo el polo alrededor del mundo”.

La FIP, tras varias idas y vueltas sobre fi nes del año 2009, había nombrado como presidente interino al australiano James Ashton.

Ashton, de 69 años, asumió la presidencia de la FIP en noviembre de 2009 después de que el titular del cargo, Patrick Guerrand-Hermes, fuese obligado a dimitir por las tres grandes naciones de polo del mundo, Reino Unido, Argentina y Estados Unidos.

Tras pocos meses en el cargo Ashton perdió la vida. Fue disputando un partido de polo en Tailandia, (el dirigente estaba de gira por el sudeste asiático para familiarizarse con el desarrollo del deporte por esas regiones) donde sufrió una caída de trágicas consecuencias.

“Lamentablemente una tragedia es la que me puso en la presidencia de la FIP”, explica Huergo. “Es cierto que llevo muchos años vinculado a la FIP, como uno de los representantes de Argentina, pero no dejó de ser una sorpresa, y sobre todo un gran orgullo, asumir semejante responsabilidad”, agrega.

El máximo directivo de la FIP, en los pocos meses que lleva en su cargo, se siente satisfecho por la buena “receptividad y voluntad del mundo del polo. Hay muchas ganas de colaborar, de armar torneos. Las Asociaciones apoyan y se dan cuenta que tienen que trabajar junto con la FIP”.

Para Huergo la misión de la FIP es “horizontal y cuando digo eso me refi ero a que su tarea es extender el polo por todo el mundo. Si se puede levantar el nivel mejor, pero yo creo que haciendo las cosas bien se levanta solo”.

A corto plazo, uno de los principales objetivos de la FIP es organizar torneos regionales en los países donde el nivel de polo todavía no es demasiado alto. “La idea es organizar estos torneos regionales, en el cual se permita traer un jugador de un poco más de handicap que levante el nivel. Se representaría a las Federaciones y se levantaría el nivel deportivo, empujando un mejor desarrollo del polo en esos países”.

El próximo Mundial está casi a al vuelta de la esquina. Con sede en Argentina, el torneo más importante que organiza la FIP ya tiene fecha para setiembre de 2011. Al respecto, Huergo comentó que “es un torneo de mucha convocatoria donde desde un nivel intermedio intervienen alrededor de 30 países. La idea es mantener los tres años entre torneo y torneo más allá de las ganas de poder organizarlo de forma más contínua. Lo que ocurre es que el Mundial se hace con el sentido de que el país anfi trión preste los caballos y no es una tarea para cualquiera. Afortunadamente Argentina los tiene y puede afrontar esa responsabilidad que no es menor”.

Canadá tiene todos los votos para ser sede del siguiente Mundial y España fi gura como gran candidato para ser el anfi trión en el 2017.

Finalmente, Huergo adelantó que la FIP también tiene previsto realizar un torneo de mayor handicap. “Una Copa de las Naciones, de 20 goles de handicap y con unos 8 equipos participando”.

La Copa Potrillos es el torneo juvenil más importante del mundo y todos los años congrega en el Club Los Indios de Buenos Aires, Argentina, a más de 200 niños.

POLO POLO TThe La Candelaria de Pilar Polo Club Tournament, organised by Tolo Polo and backed by the Argentine Polo Association, is another ‘classic’ of the youth polo season in Argentina. The organiser, Jorge Tolo Fernández Ocampo, makes sure this polo festival has every-thing, ensuring that the youngsters, in addition to competing, enjoy sport, friendship and camaraderie while continuing to build a hotbed for world polo.

POLO El Torneo La Candelaria de Pilar Polo Club, organizado por Tolo Polo y auspiciado por la Asociación Argentina de Polo, es otro de los “clásicos” de la temporada de polo infantil en Argentina. Su organizador, Jorge Tolo Fernández Ocampo, se encarga de que la fiesta deportiva sea completa donde los más chicos no sólo compiten sino que disfrutan del deporte, de la amistad y el compañerismo además de seguir construyendo el semillero del polo mundial.
