Kyle Sanna bio

Kyle Sanna’s musical inheritance was a 1945 Epiphone guitar, a newspaper photograph of his grandfather trumpeting with Louis Armstrong, and his parents’ love for popular music of the 1960’s. As a guitarist and composer Kyle Sanna produces music that eludes simple categorization. From his introduction to the guitar through rock music, to his formal study of jazz and composition, to his immersion in the traditional music of Ireland, Kyle is continually forging his compositional language and playing style out of these and other diverse interests. Kyle has collaborated with and performed alongside many of the modern virtuosos, including Edgar Meyer, Yo-Yo Ma, Chris Thile, and Theodosii Spassov, as well as with veterans of New York’s downtown scene such as Matt Darriau, Erik Friedlander, and Satoshi Takeishi. He has performed in clubs and concert halls throughout North America, Europe, and the Middle East. As a composer, Kyle has focused on scoring the visual and narrative arts, especially film, theater, and dance. He is a Meet the Composer grant recipient and was a Finalist in Turner Classic Movies’ Young Film Composers Competition. He recently completed a string quartet for Brooklyn Rider and is currently working with Sydney-based artist Michaela Davies on a “Cyborg string quartet”, where the playing of two of the performers is controlled by sequenced Electric Muscle Stimulation. Kyle Sanna’s arrangements appear on two recent Sony Classical releases by cellists: Jan Vogler performing Jimi Hendrix’s “Machine Gun” for cello and string orchestra, and two arrangements on Yo-Yo Ma’s Grammy-winning, “Songs of Joy and Peace”. His arrangements have been performed live by Korean pop superstar Rain, by Irish fiddler Martin Hayes and Brooklyn Rider on NPR’s Performance Today, and by Yo-Yo Ma on The Colbert Report.
