    Kuta Weekly News Corner21 Feb - 27 Feb 2013 (324)

G'day again folks and I hope this week's edition finds you all doing welland enjoying the island of Bali. I t was a rather good weekend just gonewith the footy finally getting started, however stupid a 20 minute halfmay be. It was good to see the Mighty Pies come out and belt theleague's drug cheats and take two wins on the day, even if it's only theN.A.B Cup. In the past the team that wins the cup doesn't win thepremiership, so it looks like the Pies will let the N.A.B Cup go. Time

will tell I guess. We did get a few emails this week to the paper, and apparently a few old timers that take great

enjoyment in doing the crosswords each week are the ones that have been in touch the most. It's been broughtto my attention that these guys really really like doing the crosswords each week and are having troublegetting the answers to each week's issue, which I find strange. The crossword page is sponsored byMa InLo Bar on Benesari street and each week they post the answers up at the back of the place in a nicelaminated sheet. It seems a few of the old codgers are having trouble getting their walking frames into K utaso we have made arrangements to get the answers posted onto the Ma In Lo's and Kuta Weekly'sFacebook page each week. I hope that helps with the problems the old fellas are having. You will have to jointhe Kuta Weekly on Facebook, by hitting the like button and there you go gentlemen, problem solved.

The sponsored pages in the paper are a great thing and I will thank Ma In Lo Bar for covering thecrossword and Sudoku page each week. One of the sponsors who has been with us for a long time now andnever complains or asks for a plug, has been covering the legendary Kuta Weekly J oke page, being Bali V-Twin Doctor or what used to be called The Bali Harley Doctor So I think it's time to give him a run. MrSteve has been looking after big bikes for more than twenty five years in Australia, running a very wellknown Performance shop in Sydney working with mainly Harley Davidsons. He has worked on many of thebig name racing team bikes and works with all makes and models (bike models that is) that are available inBali. If you need spare parts for your ride he can get them much quicker than the big dealerships can andgenerally at a better price as well. He runs his workshop with clinical like precision and keep the placecleaner than most restaurant kitchens. He is completely kitted out to cover even the biggest re-builds and hasa massive range of accessories for most bikes. He also has a huge swag of accessories from clothing tojewellery, bags, wallets, leather vests, Helmut's etc etc and just about everything you might want along thoselines. Bali V-Twin Doctor does Harley rentals at a much better price than any other place on the island andhas a great selection of brand new bikes to choose from.

The best way to check out the Bali V-Twin Doctor is to drop into the showroom and enjoy a coupleof cold beers at the little bar Mr Steve has setup where it seems cold beer and hot girls serving them, is theorder of the day. Probably the coldest and cheapest beers in town. A great place to watch the world go by andcatch up with friends. Cheers for the supportMr Steve on the joke page and we are sorry

we can't publish all the jokes that get sent tous.Ok people, that's about my lot for the weekand I do hope the most of you stay safe, happy, healthy and try to remember,

    Enjoy Your Week,ALI ASJ .

    If your

life is all about screwing things and getting

hammered, then congratulations, you're a tool.

JIMBARANJ imbaran is just south of the airport and Kuta. This

was formerly a real backwater of south Bali, just a tinyfishing village with a daily market. That all started tochange in the 1980s and J imbaran is now home to severalworld class 5 star beach resorts, plus a few moremoderate mid-market hotels.

There is however little in the way of budget

accommodation and there are also many high-end villas inthis area, particularly on the ridges of high ground above

J imbaran Bay. This has resulted in monikers such as the"Beverly Hills of Bali" or "Millionaire's Row".

The bay itself has a pleasant white sand beachand is very safe for swimming. The three clusters of grilledseafood restaurants on the beach are a major tourist drawin the evenings, as is the truly stunning sunset.

J imbaran is also home to a Norwegian University,Gateway College, with around 500 students studyingathletics, philosphy, culture, economics and journalism.

The school is located in Kedonganan close to Sari SegaraResort and in J l, Bantas Kau where it also has a small cafe.

J imbaran has an increasing number of rather chicshops but there is little or no nightlife here. It has theadvantage of being a little closer to Kuta and Seminyakand the cultural highlights of Central Bali.

    BALI, LOCATION TO SUIT EVERYONE

    THE BUKIT

Much has been written about this dusty, aridand rugged area, which forms the southernmost tip of the island.

Limestone cliffs of up to 100 meters in

height provide some of the best views in theworld, along with some deserted white sandybeaches.

Everyone wants a piece of this are, frominternational hotel chains such as Bvlgari,Versace and Banyan Tree, to establishedresidential villa developers looking for thatperfect plot. The area offers secluded beaches, and exclusivity to name but a few reasons whythis is fast becoming the place to be.

Prices have more than tripled in thearea over last 2 years alone with still plenty ofpotential to be realized, so now is a plan. Only ashort 15 minutes drive fromthe international airport, The Bukit is fast beingreferred to as the new Millionaires Row.

    Political Temperatures on the Rise in BaliG o v e r n o r O u s t sL e g i s l a t o r F r o mDiscussion Forum forBeing Ill-Mannered

Anyone doubting thatpolitical temperatures areon the rise in Bali in theperiod leading up to theelection of its nextgovernor on May 15,2013, need look no furtherthan the ongoing polemicon whether or not thecurrent governor MadeMangku Pastika is barredfrom making official visitsto the regency of Tabanan(see link below) and thereport of the expulsion of aDenpasar municipal legislatorfrom a town-forum meetingconducted by the governor lastSaturday.

The la wma ke r, E koSupriyadi, a P DI-P legislator fromthe Denpasar House ofRepresentatives (DPRD-Denpasar) was physically ejectedfrom a meeting area at the DPRD-Bali when Governor becameangry at Supriyadi's behaviour asa member of an audienceparticipating in a question andanswer session.

The expulsion happened atthe end of a long exchange inwhich the governor readilyanswered a series of toughquestions from the audience ontopics ranging from his law suit

against The Bali Post, the lease ofthe provincially-owned Mangroveforest in South Bali to a privateinterest and his workingrelationship with the Deputy

governor AA Ngurah Puspayogawho is seeking to unseat thegovernor in the coming election.

The most recent monthlyopen-house conducted by thegovernor saw the governor'sreplies typically relaxed andforthcoming, earning appreciativeapplause from most of the largeaudience in attendance.

    Supriyadi, however,

reportedly chose not topolitely join in applauding thegovernor after each answer, butelected instead to shout PAS."

Pas in the Indonesianlanguage typically means spot

on and would normallybe interpreted as anendorsement of theGovernor's answerswere it not for the factthat "PAS" has also hasbecome a rallying cry forPastika's polit icalopponents in thegovernor's race - AANgurah Puspayoga andSukrawan (PAS).

    I n c r e a s i n g l yirritated by Supriyadi's

shouts of PAS, the governorsingled out the lawmaker, ordering him to show bettermanners and not to cause trouble.

The governor, visibly angry, said that his routine town hallmeetings were not political innature and should therefore notbe dragged into the campaign.

When Supriyadi refusedPastika's order to leave the room, security personnel escorted himout to his waiting car in the parkinglot.

Demand from othercommunities for the program'sproven expertise is growing as thereputation of the sustainable andprofitable gardens spreads to

Farts - it's impor tant to let rip, say researchersFa r t i ng , cu t t i ng t hecheese, letting her rip, breaking wind whateveryou call it, experts say it'sbetter out than in, evenon a plane.

Pilots, especially, have beenurged to let flatulence out for safety'ssake, but passengers risk beingignored by cabin crews if they do.

A team of Danish and Britishgastroenterologists produced apaper on flatulence on planes afterone of them, J acob Rosenberg, wasinspired on a flight betweenCopenhagen and Tokyo.

The problem is that farting isan invariable consequence ofdigestion and people do it about 10times a day.

But people may fart more onflights because of changes in thevolume of intestinal gasses as cabinpressure alters.

H a n s C h r i s t i a nPommergaard, Jakob Burcharth,Anders Fischer, William Thomasand Professor Rosenberg have toldthe New Zealand Medical J ournalthe holding back option may seemalluring but there are drawbacks.

Stress, discomfort, pain, bloating, dyspepsia and other

symptoms could ensue, while not discounting the chancethat all the effort may be sabotagedby turbulence in any case.

There is actually only onereasonable solution ... just let it go,the medicos say.

    However, the odour and

women's farts smell worse thanmen's may impair cabin serviceand thus the quality of life aboardthe aircraft.

They warn of consequencesin the cockpit.

If the pilot restrains a fart, allthe drawbacks previouslymentioned, including diminishedconcentration, may affect hisabilities to control the airplane, theresearchers say.

If he lets go of the fart his co-pilot may be affected by its odour, which again reduces safety onboard the flight.

The specialists did notrecommend setting farts alight,

either on land or in a plane, despiteits proven ability to reduce odour.

They reluctantly dismissedthe notion of rubber pants with anattached air container for collectinggas as somewhat extreme.

But they reckon puttingactive charcoal in passenger seatsis a winner of an idea that could bebacked up with special undies.

The future frequent flyer maydevelop the ability to sneak a fart bywearing charcoal-lined underwearthus experiencing a comfortableflight in harmony with fellowpassengers, they conclude.

Pre-flight passenger methanebreath tests and reducing fibre in

airline food options were alsoconsidered.FARTING FACTS

    - There are roughly two typesof fart, silent, also known assneaking, and loud.

    - The average person fartsabout 10 times a day.

    - Women's farts smell wayworse than men's.

    - Sulphur containing gassesare responsible for the pong.

    - Burning the gas does reducethe smell but lighting farts is notrecommended on land or in a plane.

    - Exercising the pelvic ring isessential to maintain the ability to fartsilently.

    - For people with a weak pelvicfloor, decoys can be performed suchas coughing, sneezing, verbaloutbreaks or spontaneous applause.

    - Trying to hold in farts canresult in discomfort, bloating, highblood pressure, dyspepsia andpyrosis.

    Dear Martha,

Long time reader andinterested to knowyour opinion.I have two younger

brothers who areangry at me cause Islept with one of theirmates. I am 10 yearsolder, I might add,and their mate isclose to my age.

I think they are being totally ridiculous about itand have told them so, but am interested to know- are mates off limits?????

    Cleo

    Dear Cleo,

Too funny dear. Did your brothers torment you whenthey were younger? Now is your chance to pay themback. Nothing is more tormenting for a bloke thanknowing one of his mates is getting it on with hissister. If I were you I'd just guffaw loudly wheneverthey bring it up.

Your brothers can't really tell you who you can sleepwith if it's consensual. Are brother's mates off limits? No, they're not. Not for you at least. You're an oldersister. The person who probably should have showedsome restraint was their mate who no doubt crossedsome mate's code, but that's for himto sort out.

I suspect that is the real issue. Your brothers havetalked dirty with this mate countless times tellingobnoxious jokes about chicks and now you're one

of them. So they're completely freaked out with himand they're taking it out on you.

I wouldn't worry too much. They're your brothersand they'll calmdown. In the meantime tell themtomind their own business. Toss your hair around a bitwhen you do it. Give themsome secretive smiles. Butdon't apologise and don't explain.

William Michael Albert Broad (born 30 November 1955), better

known by his stage name Billy Idol, is an E nglish rock musician. Amember of the Bromley Contingent of Sex Pistols fans, Idol firstachieved fame in the punk rock era as a member of the bandGeneration X. He then embarked on a successful solo career, andwas a member of the MTV-driven "Second British Invasion" of theUnited States. A series of music videos for songs such as "WhiteWedding", "Rebel Yell" and "Eyes Without a Face" made him oneof the first MTV stars. Idol continues to tour with guitarist SteveStevens.

Life and careerIdol was born in Stanmore, Middlesex, England. The

name Billy Idol was inspired by a schoolteacher's description ofBroad as "idle".In 1958, when Idol was two years old, his parents moved toPatchogue, on Long Island, New York, US. The family returned tothe UK four years later with Idol and a younger child J ane (whohad been born in the US), settling in Dorking, Surrey. In 1971 thefamily moved to Bromley, southeastern London, where Idolattended Ravens Bourne School for Boys. Idol (rather WilliamBroad) also attended Worthing High School for Boys in WestSussex. In October 1975, Idol went to Brighton Polytechnic, to

pursue an English degree and lived on campus (East Slope) butleft after year one (1976). He then went on to join the BromleyContingent of Sex Pistols fans, a loose gang that travelled intotown when the band played.

Idol first joined the punk rock band Siouxsie and theBanshees (before the band had decided on that name) in 1976,but soon quit and joined Chelsea in 1977 as a guitarist. However,he and Chelsea band mate Tony J ames soon left that group andco-founded Generation X, with Idol switching from guitarist to leadsinger. Generation X was one of the first punk bands to appear onthe BBC Television music programme Top of the Pops.[7]Although a punk rock band, they were inspired by mid-1960sBritish pop, in sharp contrast to their more militant peers, with Idolstating; "We were saying the opposite to the Clash and the Pistols.

They were singing 'No Elvis, Beatles or the Rolling Stones', but wewere honest about what we liked. The truth was, we were allbuilding our music on the Beatles and the Stones". Generation Xsigned to Chrysalis Records and released three albums andperformed in the 1980 film, D.O .A., before disbanding.

    Early solo success

Idol moved to New York in 1981, and became a soloartist working with ex-Kiss manager, Bill Aucoin. Idol's 'bad boy'image was recognized and this worked well with the flashy glamrock style of his new partner on guitar, Steve Stevens. Togetherthey worked with Phil Feit and Steve Missal. Idol's solo careerbegan with the Chrysalis Records EP titled Don't Stop in 1981,which included the Generation X song "Dancing with Myself",originally recorded for their last album Kiss Me Deadly, and acover of Tommy J ames & the Shondells' song "Mony Mony". Idol'sdebut solo album, Billy Idol, was released in J uly 1982. Part of theMTV-driven "Second British Invasion" of the US, that year Idolbecame an MTV staple with "White Wedding" and "Dancing with

American audiences not yet as familiar with him as those in theUK, Idol's label released "Dancing with Myself" in the US inconjunction with a music video directed by Tobe Hooper, whichplayed on MTV for six months.

Idol's second LP, Rebel Yell (1983) was a majorsuccess and established Idol in the United States with hits like"Eyes Without a Face," "Flesh For Fantasy", and the title cut.

Tracks from the album featured in the 1988 Hollywood comedyfilm Big, which starred Tom Hanks. "Eyes Without a Face"peaked at number four on the US B illboard Hot 100, and "Rebel

Yell" reached number six in the UK Singles Chart.Idol released Whiplash Smile in 1986, which sold

well. The album included the hits "To Be a Lover," "Don't Need aGun" and "Sweet Sixteen". Idol filmed a video featuring "SweetSixteen" (which he also wrote) in Florida's Coral Castle. Thesong was inspired by the story of Edward Leedskalnin's formerlove, Agnes Scuffs, who was the main reason Leedskalnin builtthe structure over a period of decades, starting years after she

Lance Franklin might be Hawthorn's mostdynamic weapon, but coach Alastair Clarksonsays he has no issue with his star frontman'sdecision to delay his contract talks.

The champion forward has put off negotiations with

the Hawks about his immediate future until the end of thisseason.Clarkson was philosophical about the spearhead's

decision, saying that in an era of free agency it wouldbecome more common and clubs needed to respect it.

He said that with his Hawthorn hat on, he wouldnaturally like his star player wrapped up with a new dealbut the club had to look at Franklin's right to explore otheroptions.

"Whether it's Hawthorn, other clubs or the footballcommunity, I think we've just got to have to get our headsaround free agency and how it's going to impact on clubs,"Clarkson said.

"He's got a contract at our football club for season2013 and we're going to do everything we can to ensurethat that's good for both of us and we'll see what happensat the end of the year.

"But we're hopeful he'll obviously stay and continueto contribute for the Hawks."Clarkson admitted that Franklin had a history of

dedication to the club and his decision to look into otherpossibilities at the end of the year was perfectlyacceptable.

"Staying in one place for nine years is a long periodof time now, and that's another thing we've just got to getused to," Clarkson said.

"At some point in time he'll sit down with all theinformation that's available to him, and I think he justgenuinely wants to see how this footy season unfoldsbefore he makes a decision on where he wants to play hisfooty in 2014."

Meanwhile, as injuries begin to appear already inthe preseason competition, Clarkson admitted it was anervous time for the club.

"It's atreacheroustime of yearand it's a bigrisk for allplayers overthe next sixt o e i g h tweeks tog e tconditionedfor four full

quarters of AFL footy," he said."There's not a hell of a lot you can do

about it, but you just have to pray and hope forthe best that it's not one of your players whohave had a good preseason."

The experimental cap on 80 interchangerotations a game for the preseason cup wouldalso be a strain, he said.

"The whole priority for preparation forround one is game time and the welfare of theplayers, not wins or losses, and I think thatgoes for all 18 clubs," Clarkson said.

Reds approaching Folau just l ike SBWQ u e e n s la n d ce n t re A n th o n y Faingaa has li kened Israel Folau toSonny Bill Williams, outlining theReds defence will be on full alertwhen they meet the Waratahs atLang Park on Saturday night.

Folau will be making his SuperRugby debut against the Reds, havingjoine d the Waratahs after an

unsuccessful stint with AFL clubGreater Western Sydney.

But what has made the Redswary ahead of Saturday night wasFolau's exploits in rugby league thatincluded five State of Originappearances for Queensland andseven Tests for Australia.

His imposing physique -standing at 193 centimetres andweighing 103 kilograms - remindsFaingaa of Williams, who enjoyedsuccess in the 15-man code prior toswitching back to rugby league thisseason.

Faingaa first faced Williams inthe Reds' epic encounters with theCrusaders during the 2011 SuperRugby season, which included the 18-

13 win over the New Zealand franchisein the final. He was given much of the credit

for the Reds' defensive performancethat limited the effect of Williams in the

centres and his offloading game.Faingaa expects a similar

challenge against Folau, even thoughhe is expected to be named at full-backfor the Waratahs.

"He does all the basics well, obviously transferring some of his stufffrom rugby league into rugby union," hesaid.

"He runs the ball really hard, heoffloads really well. Some of the traitsyou see in Sonny Bill you see in IzzyFolau."

Folau impressed in theWaratahs' three preseason trialmatches and even earned their man-of-the-match honour in last Thursday's 16-14 loss to the Crusaders at SydneyFootball S tadium.

Trial matches, though, are adifferent proposition to regular seasonfixtures and questions marks have beenraised about how Folau will handle theexpected crowd of nearly 50,000 atLang Park.

Folau has previously played atthe 'Cauldron" wearing a Maroonsjumper and a hostile welcome may

await the 23-year-old, similar to thatafforded to Wendell Sailor when heappeared with the Waratahs against theReds in 2006.

    But Faingaa feels Folau's

exposure in the spotlight ofprofessional sport will help him block outthe crowd and focus on the task at handon the field.

"He's had a lot of pressure, goingto AFL, being one of the top players inrugby league," he said.

"So I don't think this is going tohassle him too much. He's a rugby

player now. There's always pressurewhen you play, especially for him."Roving commission

Reds director of coaching EwenMcKenzie expects Waratahs coachMichael Cheika to give Folau a simplebrief for Saturday night's blockbuster.

"He (Cheika) won't bog him downwith too much detail," he said.

'He'll just back him to play and Ithink a player in his situation that will bethe best thing."

McKenzie is tipping Cheika togive Folau a "license" to play anunstructured style of game, much likehow the Reds use star winger DigbyIoane.

"We just let him (Ioane) play," hesaid.

We've got some plays andmoves, but Digby roams and that's whyhe touches the ball more than anyoneelse just about every game."

said the decision to skip therace in which the mareachieved her highest-everrating when she won it in 2011had been made with her welfarein mind, as much as the peace ofmind of all connections.

"There'll be no 'will-she-won't -she'. She's not anacceptor," Moody said.

    "We thought we didn't need

to go down that path."Moody said Black Caviar had

Review AFL heat policy says Saints coach

St Kilda coach Scott Watterswants a review of the AFL'sheat policy after breakingeven on a scorching start tothe club's preseason cupcampaign on Sunday.

The S ai nts thu mpedAdelaide by 26 points but thenwilted in a 50-point loss to PortAdelaide, before the Crowsdowned the Power by 16 points.

Watters said St Kilda'smedical staff were on "high alert"during their games, played in 38degree heat at Football Park.

The only concession to thesearing conditions was eachclub being allowed two extradrinks carriers.

"You have to have a closelook at the heat policy - that waspretty hot," Watters told reporters.

"Those players were under afair bit of pressure in the secondhalf.

"We tried our best to rotatethem but .... playing in that sort ofheat, it's testing, particularly foryounger players.

"We ask them to cope with it,

we ask them to prepare, andthey are fit - but that was pretty tough."

    Watters said the challengewould
