The Need for an 'Air Bus' in BaliCalls Mount for End to TaxiMonopoly and Publ icTransport Access to BaliAirport

A member of the provincialHouse of Representatives (DPRD-Bali)is issuing a call for the Trans-SarbagitaBus System now serving most of SouthBali to also include the Ngurah RaiInternational Airport.

The secretary of Commission IIIDPRD-Bali, Gusti Made Suryanta

Putra, said, I hope the provincialgovernment of Bali will soon coordinatewith PT Angkasa Pura I at the NgurahRai Airport to allow buses from theTrans-Sarbagita System to servepassengers.

Putra said it is the government'sresponsib i l i ty to make publictransportation available to the public.Adding, This must be done by thegovernment as an additional service tothe public and visiting tourists.

The legislator lamented that Bali'sairport is perhaps the only airport inIndonesia not served by a public bussystem. As a result, passengers are

compelled to use the taxi monopolyoperated from the airport.

At the very least, he said AngkasaPura should provide buses connectingthe airport with the Kuta Central Parkingarea the major interchange for theTrans-Sarbagita Bus System. Thiswould represent both a service totravellers but help reduce trafficcongestion in Bali.

Kuta is nestled between Jl. Bakungsari to thesouth and Jl. Melasti to the north.

Kuta is the best known of all the villages in Bali , oftenmaligned, but loved by many. Kuta gets its so called badreputation from the early days of travel to Bali whereeverybody, particularly the young crowd, hung out and gotwrecked. Footpaths didn't exist, open drains ran down theside of unmade roads. Shopping was sarongs and T-shirts

and hawkers who sold just about anything.Times have changed and Kuta has grown up, gone

are the unmade roads and open drains. Footpaths, althoughnarrow, run both sides of the main streets. The hawkers arestill there - part of the character of the place.

Sarongs and T-shirts are still sold but now there areCD shops, boutiques, small trendy bars and restaurants andeven Department Stores. Kuta boasts the world's first"themed" Hard Rock Hotel.

Imagine going into a huge one level shopping centrethat would take about 45 minutes to walk from one end to theother with small walkways branching off in every direction, now add cars, motorbikes and the odd temple ceremony. This is what the middle of Kuta is like except it doesn't have aroof. Just find a small caf (Warung), sit back and watch, it'sgreat!

The hawkers in Kuta can be aggressive, but if youdon't want to buy - don't make eye contact. Don't sayanything and there will generally be no problems.

The beach at Kuta is wide and usually has good surf inthe late afternoon. Kuta beach isn't really a place to sit if youdon't like crowds.

In keeping with the Kuta theme, it is more of a socialoccasion, where you meet the locals and other tourists andyou don't have to move for anything - the hawkers will bring itto you. Late afternoon is best about 3 - 4pm, sunsets, soccergames, and just a great place for a walk.

If being involved and having everything close by;if you want to party or just shop, Kuta is the place. Evenif you don't stay there, don't go home without visitingKuta at least once, maybe twice... three times?

Gday again punters and hasn't it been a while between drinks. Theholidays are all but over for all of our Muslim friends and now we headinto the Balinese holiday of galungan, so you will see lots of decoratedbamboo poles out the front of most Balinese houses and businesses. These are called Penjor and are similar to what we have as a Christmastree. There will be some good photo opportunities in and around Kutaover the period, so get your camera ready and charged. It's been great to

have a week off and not have to do any work but it's also great to bewriting this editorial for the newspaper and actually getting the paper out to you all once again. It's been abusy few weeks with the A.F.L ladder having a terrible adjustment to the fifth spot this week with the MightyPies struggling as usual at the pointy end of the season. The Eagles had a great win over the weekend, with thegame of the round being the Hawks v Sydney clash, ending with the Hawks taking home the prize at the endof the fourth quarter. It was a great game of footy to watch and could almost be a precursor to the grand finalin a few weeks. For my money, I'd like to see the Pies surprise us all and make it a third straight premiershipcampaign. Time will tell I guess and may the best team win.

This week is the last one for all us tipsters and if your more than a few behind the leaders I'd say the most youhave to look forward to is the end of year tipping parties that will be happening soon. I'll keep you all postedon the dates when I hear.

Seeing we haven't run the paper for a week, lots and lots of thing have been happening on the island with afew shots of bad news to throw in as well. The general consensus of a good night out on the island is swungtowards those nasty little green bottles, seeing they are so enjoyable from time to time, however when you'vehad enough, and people including your doctor tells you you've had enough, I think you have to act to at leastslow down on them. During the past week a local identity that has been here in Bali for a very long timepassed away due to a massive stroke. Now some say that Jimmy Lovina drank too much and maybe he did,but he was a good man who never really hurt anyone except himself. RIP Jimmy, and the Kuta weekly offercondolences' to his wife and family that are left behind. On a lighter note this week I did hear about one of the old mates who found his way home after a nighton the town and decide that the bedroom was too far away from the parking area at his house so hedecided to sleep in the garden and luckily the bike was there to pull on top of himself to keep warm. Ithought it a bit strange when I was first told about the episode and asked if it was the ferret which itactually turned out to be. The silly old fool decided to head home after a few too many and slipped offhis footing and had the bike land on the best part ofhis body so he couldn't get up and about that time ofnight he didn't have the strength to call out to anyonenor lift the bike. Eventually he was rescued from hisdilemma and went inside to stretch out in his bed and

sleep it off. Time for a slow down old mate..

Ok folks on that note I think it might be time for a fewsoothing ales myself and as usual I hope the most of youstay safe, happy healthy and always remember, Youonly live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.

    Enjoy your week,

    ALIASJ.

    GalunganCeremony In Bali, 30th August,2012

Galungan is a Balinese holiday that occursevery 210 days and lasts for 10 days. Kuningan isthe last day of the holiday. Galungan means "Whenthe Dharma is winning." During this holiday the

Balinese gods visit the Earth and leave onKuningan.

Occurring once in every 210 days in thepawukon (Balinese cycle of days), Galungan marksthe beginning of the most important recurringreligious ceremony that is celebrated by allBalinese. During the Galungan period the deifiedancestors of the family descend to their formerhomes. They must be suitably entertained andwelcomed, and prayers and offerings must be madefor them. Those families who have ancestors thathave not yet been cremated, but are still buried inthe village cemetery, must make offerings at thegraves.

Although Galungan falls on a Wednesday, most Balinese will begin their Galungan 'holiday' theday before, where the family is seen to be busily

preparing offerings and cooking for the next day. While the women of the household have been busyfor days before creating beautifullywoven 'banten' (offerings made fromyoung coconut fronds), the men of ourvillage usually wake up well beforedawn to join with their neighbours toslaughter a pig unlucky enough to bechosen to help celebrate thisoccasion. Then the finely diced pork ismashed to a pulp with a grindingstone, and moulded onto sate sticksthat have been already prepared bywhittling small sticks of bamboo.Chickens may also be chosen fromthe collection of free-range chickensthat roam around the house

compound. Delicate combinations ofvarious vegetables, herbs and spicesare also prepared by the men to makeup a selection of 'lawar' dishes. Whilemuch of this cooking is for use in theofferings to be made at the familytemple, by mid-morning, once all thecooking is done, it is time for the first ofa series of satisfying feasts from whathas been prepared. While the womencontinue to be kept busy with thepreparations of the many offerings to

be made at the family temple on the day ofGalungan, the men also have another job to do thisday, once the cooking is finished. A long bamboopole, or 'penjor', is made to decorate the entrance tothe family compound. By late Tuesday afternoon all

over Bali the visitor can see these decorative polescreating a very festive atmosphere in the street. On Wednesday, the day of Galungan, one will

find that most Balinese will try to return to their ownancestral home at some stage during the day, even ifthey work in another part of the island. This is a veryspecial day for families, where offerings are made toGod and to the family ancestors who have comeback to rest at this time in their family temple. As wellas the family temple, visits are made to the villagetemple with offerings as well, and to the homes ofother families who may have helped the family insome way over the past six months.

The day after Galungan is a time for a holiday, visiting friends, maybe taking the opportunity to headfor the mountains for a picnic. Everyone is still seento be in their 'Sunday best' as they take to the streets

to enjoy the festive spirit that Galungan brings to Bali.

    A warning for Golfers.

A small old lady was walking down the street dr agging twodustbin bags behind her. One of the bags was ripped and

every once in a while a 10 fell out onto the path.Noticing this, a policeman stopped her, and said, "Ma'am,

there are 10 notes falling out of that bag.""Oh, really? Dam it!" said the old lady. "I'd better go backand see if I can find them. Thanks for telling me officer.

"Well, now, not so fast," said the cop. Where did you get allthat money? You didn't steal it, did you?" "Oh, no, no", said

the old lady. "You see, my back garden is right next to a Golfcourse.

A lot of Golfers come and pee through a knot hole in myfence, right into my flower Garden. It used to really annoy

me. Kills the flowers, you know. Then I thought, 'why notmake the best of it?

So, now, I stand behind the fence by the knot hole, reallyquiet, with my hedge clippers.

Sunday could not havebeen any more different behindthe wheel for the three-timechampion from his Saturdayouting when he botched his start

Dockers lock up finals spotFremantle settled the AFLtop eight for the Septemberfinals with a shock 53-pointwin over North Melbourne atDocklands on Sunday.

The 20.12 (132) to 12.7 (79)scoreline was the Dockers' first

victory over the Kangaroos underthe roof in five attempts andensured Fremantle's place in thefinals.

The hefty loss was adouble blow for theKangaroos, who gave upseventh spot to Fremantleon percentage.

With one matchremaining in the regularseason, North Melbourneand Fremantle are nowtwo games ahead of ninth-placed St Kilda as well asCarlton and Essendon.

    The Dockers were

hit by injury before thestart of the match when theircaptain Matthew Pavlich, who hasbeen battling Achilles andhamstring strains for weeks, withdrew because of a groininjury.

Although the Kangarooskicked the opening goal of thegame, it was the Dockers whograbbed control of the contest.

    Fremantle dominated the

mid f ie ld con test w i thStephen Hill, Hayden Ballantyneand Nathan Fyfe grabbing theearly ascendancy.

The Dockers were alsoeffective in shutting down therunning games of Brent Harvey,Jack Ziebell and Ryan Bastinac,

who have torn sides apart inrecent weeks.

Luke McPharlin did anexcellent defensive job on DrewPetrie, while North's other markingtargets, Robbie Tarrant andLachlan Hansen, were hardlysighted all day.

Hansen finished the daywith three goals but the Roos didnot have their usual potency andneither Petrie or Tarrant registereda goal.

Fremantle went to half-timewith a 6.7 (43) to 5.4 (34) lead, butthe Roos hit back hard early in thethird quarter.

They kicked goals throughHansen and Lindsay Thomas, their best forward for the day, andwhen Kieran Harper kicked a goal

after a 50-metre penalty the Rooshit the front.

    B u t F r e m a n t l er e s p o n d e d , w i t hBallantyne (four goals)and Michael Walters (fourgoals) excellent in theforward pocket and thevisitors went to the lastbreak ahead by 21 points.

Despite not havingPavlich, the competition'sleading goal-kicker with 60majors for the season, theDockers had too manyavenues to goal.

    The Roos kicked the

opening two goals of the finalquarter and were within ninepoints of the Dockers after just twominutes of play.

But rather than a Roos'revival it sent the Dockers intoattack and they kicked the nextseven goals to secure a much-needed victory.

THE JOSHUA TREEThis album by rock band U2. It was produced by Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno, and wasreleased on 9 March 1987 on Island Records. In contrast to the ambient experimentationof their 1984 release The Unforgettable Fire, U2 aimed for a harder-hitting sound on TheJoshua Tree within the limitation of conventional song structures. The album is

influenced by American and Irish roots music and depicts the band's love-haterelationship with the United States, with socially and politically conscious lyricsembellished with spiritual imagery. Inspired by American tour experiences, literature, and politics, U2 chose America as a theme for the record. Recording began i n January1986 in Ireland, and to foster a relaxed, creative atmosphere, the group recorded in twohouses, in addition to two professional studios. Several events during the sessionshelped shape the conscious tone of the album, including the band's participation in AConspiracy of Hope tour, the death of roadie Greg Carroll, and lead vocalist Bono'stravels to Central America. Recording was completed in November and additionalproduction continued into January 1987. Throughout the sessions, U2 sought a"cinematic" quality for the record that would evoke a sense of location, in particular, theopen spaces of America. They represented this in the sleeve photography depictingthem in American desert landscapes. The Joshua Tree received critical acclaim, topped the charts in over 20 countries, andsold in record-breaking numbers. According to Rolling Stone, the album increased theband's stature "from heroes to superstars". It produced the hit singles "With or WithoutYou", "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For", and "Where the Streets Have NoName". The album won Grammy Awards for Album of the Year and Best RockPerformance by a Duo or Group with Vocal in 1988. The group supported the record withthe Joshua Tree Tour throughout 1987. Frequently featured on critics' lists of rock'sgreatest records, The Joshua Tree is one of the world's best-selli ng albums, with over 25million copies sold. In 2007, U2 released a remastered edition of the record to

commemorate its 20th anniversary. Before The Joshua Tree, U2 had released four studio albums and were an

internationally successful band, particularly as a live act having toured every year in the1980s. The group's stature and the public's anticipation for a new album grew followingtheir 1984 record The Unforgettable Fire, their subsequent tour, and their participation inLive Aid in 1985. U2 began writing new material in mid-1985 following the UnforgettableFire Tour.Band manager Paul McGuinness recounted that TheJoshua Tree originated from the band's "greatromance" with the United States, as the group hadtoured the country for up to five months per year in thefirst half of the 1980s. Leading up to the albumsessions, lead vocalist Bono had been reading theworks of American writers such as Norman Mailer,Flannery O'Connor, and Raymond Carver so as tounderstand, in the words of Hot Press editor Niall

Stokes, "those on the fringes of the promised land, cut off from the American dream". Following a 1985humanitarian visit to Ethiopia with his wife Ali, Bono said, "Spending time in Africa and seeing people in thepits of poverty, I still saw a very strong spirit in the people, a richness of spirit I didn't see when I camehome... I saw the spoiled child of the Western world. I started thinking, 'They may have a physical desert, but we've got other kinds of deserts.' And that's what attracted me to the desert as a symbol of some sort."Following the release of The Joshua Tree, U2 staged the worldwide Joshua Tree Tour. It began in April1987, and comprising 109 shows over three legs, it continued through December. The first and third legsvisited the US, while the second leg toured Europe. The Joshua Tree elevated the group to a new level ofpopularity; the tour sold out arenas and stadiums around the world the first time they consistentlyperformed at venues of that size and it played to over 3 million people. Songs from the album becamestaples of the tour's setlists, as the group regularly performed eight of the record's eleven tracks, and theonly song not to be played was "Red Hill Mining Town".Like their previous tours, The Joshua Tree Tour was a minimalistic, the tour grossed $40 million, butdespite its commercial success and positive reviews, U2 were dissatisfied creatively, and Bono believedthey were musically unprepared for their success. Mullen said, "We were the biggest, but we weren't thebest", and for Bono the tour was "one of the worst times of [their] musical life. On the road, the group dealtwith death threats, along with injuries that Bono sustained from performing. The band hinted that thestresses of touring led them to enjoy the "rock and roll lifestyle" they previously avoided. All lyrics written by Bono, all music composed by U2.

Eight minutes after the re-start and the AllBlacks had piled on 13 points and any hopes theWallabies held of pulling off an upset were gone.

When Australia had a chance for easypoints, a penalty 10 metres out and in front of theposts, it took a tap kick instead and the moveended with the All Blacks securing a turnover.

It was left to Carter to land one morepenalty to end the scoring and extend the AllBlacks' unbeaten run at Eden Park to 30 Tests.

Australia's hopes of breaking its BledisloeCup drought will have to wait another yearafter suffering a 22-0 defeat to New Zealandat Eden Park in Auckland.

The Wallabies last held the symbol of trans-Tasman rugbyunion dominance in 2002, but they were outclassed by the AllBlacks on Saturday evening with the hosts capitalising on their

opponents' poor discipline.Dan Carter slotted five penalty goals and converted the only

try of the match, scored by full-back Israel Dagg. The defeat extends the Wallabies' losing streak at Eden

Park against the All Blacks to 14 matches, their last victory comingin 1986.

The result also effectively ends the Wallabies' chances ofwinning the inaugural Rugby Championship, as they lost 27-19 tothe All Blacks in the tournament opener in Sydney last Saturdaynight.

The two sides will meet again in October with Brisbanehosting a third Bledisloe Cup encounter, which will be contestedoutside of the Rugby Championship.

"They were too good and I think it was a combination of usbeing poor as well," said Wallabies captain Will Genia, who spent10 minutes in the sin-bin late in the first half.

"We weren't good enough getting out of our D (defensive)zone, that's two weeks in a row that we look to push the play toomuch.

"To their credit they pressured us into mistakes."Returning to the scene of their World Cup triumph 10

months ago, the All Blacks dominated throughout, even thoughthey were unable to completely remedy their erratic form from lastweek and again they had problems securing clean line-out ball.

They monstered the Wallabies in the scrums an d controlledthe breakdown, where captain Richie McCaw and Kieran Readshowed far more aggression than Michael Hooper and ScottHigginbotham.

Behind the pack, fledgling half-back Aaron Smith fed astream of front-foot ball to his outsides, where Carter and SonnyBill Williams kept Quade Cooper and Berrick Barnes scrambling.

It is the second time this year the All Blacks achieved therare feat of blanking the opposition - they beat Ireland 60-0.

The Wallabies, who chose an expansive game plan lastweek, opted for a more conservative forward drive approach forthe return clash but apart from a brief period at the start of the gamethey rarely put the All Blacks under pressure.

In the first half, three Carter penalties were the only pointsfor the All Blacks as tries went begging.Dagg was brought down just short of the line when a pass to

an unmarked Hosea Gear outside would have perhaps been abetter option, and Liam Messam crossed the line only to have theball ripped out of his grasp.

Despite the 9-0 lead at the turn the All Blacks were always incontrol and the points flowed freely after the break.

With the wind behind him Carter landed a 53-metre penaltywhich was followed by a try to Dagg beside the posts.

Carter landed the conversion and immediately anotherpenalty after the All Blacks swept back on attack when Barnes' kickoff went out on the full.
