    News Corner

'day again, and welcome to the latest edition of the Kuta Weekly, and to all of you that can't read, we might try publishing a dottedGversion of the paper soon so listen out for that. What a week it's

been in the world with my highlight being the end of the Moto GP racing forthe year and Casey Stoner finishing off a great season in Valencia, with anice win from poll position on Sunday Night. The tributes are still rolling infor the young rider simonchelli who lost his life in the last race inMalaysia. Stoner won the race hands down, but, didn't need to pull thehard yards as he already had enough championship points in the bag a

few weeks prior to win the championship. I found myself kicking back at the Y-BAR, Balis hottest sports bar andafter asking the staff to hit the volume on all the televisions I could see, which surrounded me, it was about asclose as you could get to being there and watching the race live it in Spain. Great stuff.

Staying with sporting legends I see this week brought the passing of one of the world's most influentialand arguably best boxers being Smoking Joe Frazier. This man was one of the hardest men to face up to in aboxing ring in the early 70s and is probably best known for his legendary fight with Cassius Clay in Madisonsquare garden, when he beat Ali with a unanimous 15 round decision, which was dubbed the fight of the century. His career had him face up to 32 wins, with 27 of those being knock outs. He took on all comers and even wonOlympic Gold in 1964 in Tokyo. He only ever lost a match to two contenders being Ali and Forman. He lost hismost important fight this week being the fight for his life, against Liver Cancer and that should be a reminder to allthe Bintang taste testers that do nothing more than prop up a bar each and every day, without fail, that one dayyour liver will talk back to you. My condolences go out to his family and I hope he rests in peace like a truechampion.

I think one of the most important things everyone should take on board while living in the paradise we callBali, is to slow up on the booze. It seems all too easy to sit and drink 27 beers each night and dribble the same oldstories out and listen to them as well. For the most of us a few days a week alcohol free is a normal way to live. Before I moved to Bali a fellow, who I didn't think knew much said to me, You must be not prone to becoming an

alcoholic if you live in Bali, which I took with a pinch of salt thinking he didn't know anything, but after quite a fewyears of being here, and watching the way the little crews work, I can see where he was heading with thatstatement. Is it because people want to feel a sense of belonging, so they all meet each night and get pissed up,or is the television programming so terrible at home that they can't stand staying there with their wives' and family??? Who knows? Maybe its boredom?

Oh well it wouldn't do if we were all the same, and on that note, as is standard for any day that ends in y, Ithink it might be time to taste test a few greenys myself and tilt my glass to Smoking Joe. I hope the most of youhave a safe week, staying healthy and happy and remember, every experiment, by an individual, that has aselfish aim, will fail.

    Enjoy your week,ALIASJ..

Joe Frazier loses fight with cancerJoe Frazier, the formerund ispu ted heavywe igh tchamp famed for his epicfights against Muhammad Ali,died on Monday after a briefbut brave battle with livercancer. He was 67.

    The family issued a news

release confirming Frazier's deathlate on Monday night. The boxing icon won an

Olympic gold medal in a brilliantcareer that spanned almost 20 yearsbut he was best known for fighting Aliin a famed 1970s trilogy of bouts, including the epic "Thrilla in Manila."

He had been under homecare after being diagnosed a coupleof weeks ago with the advanced livercancer that took his life, a familyfriend said.

"I will always remember Joewith respect and admiration," Ali saidin a statement.

"My sympathy goes out to his

    family and loved ones."Frazier, nicknamed "Smokin'J o e , " c a p t u r e d t w o m a j o rheavyweight titles while taking on allcomers, including Ali, GeorgeForeman, Jerry Quarry, Joe Bugner,Oscar Bonavena and GeorgeChuvalo.

Frazier was a huge part of theheyday of boxing's heavyweightdivision in the 1970s. He finished hislegendary career with 32 wins (27knockouts), four losses and onedraw.

His four losses came at thehands of just two other legendaryfighters from that era: Ali and

Foreman.Manny Pacquiao heard thenews after arriving Monday night inLas Vegas for his title fight againstJuan Manuel Marquez on Saturday.

"Bo x in g l o s t a g re a tchampion, and the sport lost a greatambassador," Pacquiao said. "Myprayers go out to his family."

Frazier was the first man todefeat Ali, with a unanimous 15-round decision in 1971 at MadisonSquare Garden, in what was dubbed

the "Fight of the Century".An estimated 300 million

people around the world watchedthe fight on television.

Frazier's business managerLeslie Wolff said that fight haspassed down through threegenerations and caused Frazier'sfan base to skyrocket.

"If you look into the history ofwhat took place, there is a lot ofemotion," said Wolff. "When youhave a legend, people respond to alegend."

Frazier and Ali went on tofight twice more.

Ali won a unanimous 12-round decision in a 1974 rematch atthe Garden and famouslycompleted the trilogy, winning the"Thrilla in Manila" in 1975 bystopping Frazier after 14 rounds intheir epic fight in the Philippines.

Frazier's trainer EddieFutch stepped in to halt the brutalslugfest after the 14th round.

Futch had to hold backFrazier who could barely stand butwanted to continue the fight into the15th round.

"Closest thing to dying that Iknow of," said Ali after the fight.

For many years after theyfinished fighting each other in thering, Frazier remained bittertowards Ali because of Ali'srepeated taunts and verbal jabs.

Ali would often use thewords Uncle Tom and gorilla todescribe Frazier.

Frazier always tried to takethe high road andmore recently said

he had forgiven Ali.Frazier wonthe World BoxingCouncil and WorldBoxing Associationheavyweight titlesin 1970 by stoppingJimmy Ellis in thefifth round of theirfight at MadisonSquare Garden.

He defended the title fourtimes before running into thebigger and stronger Foreman in1973.

A British woman is suingPortuguese authorities forwrongful imprisonment andmental anguish after beingarrested for a sup posed crimecommitted by her formerboyfriend.

    Tracey Molamphy's ordeal

began in 2008 while travelling withher then-partner, Lee Chapman, inGermany and her name wasflagged on an immigrationdatabase,

Miss Molamphy was strip-searched and imprisoned in aGerman cell for two weeks with aheroin addict.

"German officials madethe arrest as the result of anincident which took place in 1996while Miss Molamphy and MrChapman were holidaying inPortugal.

    " M r C h a p m a n w a sunknowingly in possession of 120in counterfeit notes and when hetried to get the money changed, thecouple were arrested.

"They were detained for 24hours but, after a brief hearingconducted entirely in Portuguese, were released without charge - orso they thought - and simply

ordered to leave Portugalon the next flight out."

The couple travel ledregularly throughout Europewithout concern, until MissMolamphy was arrested in Munich.

    " I t t r a n s p i r e d t h a tPortuguese authori t ies hadcharged Miss Molamphy with being

an accessory to forgery and that, under European Arrest Warrantlegislation introduced in 2003, shecould be detained and extraditedanywhere within the EU withoutevidence.

"Mr Chapman escapedsimilar charges because Lisbonofficials did not have his address."

Miss Molamphy, 40, saidshe and Mr Chapman hadattempted to explain to authoritiesthat they had arrested the wrongperson, but "they took no notice".

She was hours away frombeing extradited to Portugal when

her lawyers secured her release."Miss Molamphy's team oflawyers were able to obtain bailand the charges were eventuallydropped - but only after MissMolamphy had spent 20,000 inlegal costs,"

"Had she been extraditedback to Portugal, she faced months

in custody awaiting trialand up to five years in jail for her'crime'.

    "Miss Molamphy, whosplit from Mr Chapman in 2009,is now suing the Portuguesea u th o r i t i e s fo r w r o n g fu limprisonment and mentalanguish."

She said the ordeal hadaffected her confidence and lefther feeling "really down about itfor a long time".

"The incident has beencondemned by human rightswatchdogs who say that MissMolamphy's action, which getsunderway in Lisbon this week, will be a test for the controversialEuropean Arrest Warrant law.

Fair Trials Internationalchief Jago Russell said MissMolamphy was the victim of afast-track extradition systembeing used for petty crimes and

years after the alleged offence."Her case is just the tip ofthe iceberg," Mr Russell said.

"Last year alone, over1000 people were extraditedfrom the UK under these laws.Until they are reformed, manymore are going to suffer this kindof ordeal."

Aries Mar 20 - Apr 19Recent changes in plans are as unexpected as they areirritating. But the more you learn about thesedevelopments, the more you're convinced that whilethey're disruptive, they're also in your best interests.Others haven't yet recognised that. Rather than argue, say nothing. Soon events will testify eloquently on yourbehalf.

    10 Nov - 16 Nov 2011 (258)

Taurus Apr 20 - May 20If you're still juggling the results of recent exciting butunsettling developments, it's no surprise. Dealing withthese has as much to do with your perspective on the

actual situations involved as what you decide. That beingthe case, make a point of exploring your options. Whatyou learn could revolutionise your thinking.

Gemini May 21 - Jun 20Last week your ruler Mercury and the planet that's allabout charm, Venus, both moved to accent partnershipsof all varieties. This means not only those of a personalnature, but links of a more worldly nature. While you'vebeen avoiding certain tricky matters, you should finally beable to resolve them easily.

Cancer Jun 21 - Jul 22It's worth bearing in mind that because Thursday's FullMoon heightens everybody's emotions, certain usuallyreasonable individuals might be increasingly difficult todeal with. Knowing that, instead of trying to talk overissues, quietly withdraw. Nothing is so urgent that it can'twait until they're in a calmer mood.

Leo Jul 23 - Aug 22Having had a chance to get used to the radical changesabout which others are so enthusiastic, you're now

seriously intrigued. This is good timing, since with Mars, which has a great deal to do with these, moving into a newsign on Friday, what you don't commit to now may neverhappen.Virgo Aug 23 - Sep 22Because you seldom make plans without carefullydefining your objectives and examining the situation inquestion, those arrangements usually stand as firstorganised. But now it seems you need to rethink themnearly every day. This has little to do with yourthoroughness and everything to do with ongoing changesin circumstances.

LibraSep 23 - Oct 22It's not that you've been secretive about certain matters.Or at least that wasn't your intention. However, now thatboth your ruler Venus and the communication planetMercury are accenting the exchange of important ideas, you're beginning to realise how much you haven't said. And that you've some catching up to do.

ScorpioOct 23 - Nov 21Few things annoy you more than those who can't make adecision and stick with it. However, if you ask what'sbehind the sudden changes they're making, you won't just

be more understanding, you might decide it would be inyour best interests to rethink certain of your own plans orarrangements.

Sagittarius Nov 22 - Dec 21Not only are things moving swiftly, you're only nowbeginning to realise how far-reaching the impact of theevents triggered by your ruler Jupiter's aspect to Pluto willbe. What is clear, however, is that these could take youfurther than you imagined you could go, and more swiftlythan you dreamed possible.

Capricorn Dec 22 - Jan 19While usually you're quite right to be suspicious of offersthat seem too good to be true, at the moment it's probablythe reverse. That is, not only are these worthwhile, onceyou learn more you'll realise they're actually far betterthan you imagined. So much you'll want to respond swiftlyand decisively.

AquariusJan 20 - Feb 18Often clashes with those closest, at work or at home, arenothing more than that, mere differences. However, delve

more deeply into those you're currently facing and youcould discover a genuine misunderstanding, one that'sbeen the source of conflicts for a very long time. And onethat's surprisingly easily resolved.

Pisces Feb 19 - Mar 19You owe it to yourself to say exactly what's on your mind.If you're concerned others won't understand, you must beas frank as necessary to drive the point home. Worryingas this forthright approach seems, the odds are goodyou'll clear up confusion you thought you'd just have tolive with.

the Balinese Pawukon calendar, being the Saturday of its lastweek, Watugunung.

D e w i Sa r a s w a t i i sgenerally referred to as Goddessof 'Science & Knowledge'.Dewi Saraswati is the femalecounter-part of the Balinese godDewa Brahma, the manifestationof the Almighty Infinite Spirit asthe Creator. The spiritual symbolism ofSaraswati

The materialistic worldviews that dominate the modern

world we live in, have causedconsiderable mis-interpretationsof the religious symbols found inBalinese Hinduism. The mainreason for this is a general loss ofthe ability to think in 'parallels', tocommunicate in symbols andanalogies. Instead, modern mantends to interpret most religioussymbols literally.

    N o w a d a y s t h eKnowledge/Science symbolizedby Saraswati is generallyinterpreted as pure secular,scientific knowledge; at libraries

offerings are made for books ando t h e r i mp o r t a n t w r i t t e nmaterials, such as the lontar;books and (written) language areseen as the vessels of secular, scientific knowledge. At theschools and universities thestudents pray for success withtheir studies. During SaraswatiDay it is not allowed to read, which can be compared with our

'one minute silence', in honourof the 'gift' of books andlanguage which enablesmankind to pass on thescientific knowledge that leadsto secular success. In itself these 'modern'interpretations do no harm asfar as the importance ofsecular, scientific knowledgefo r t he educa t ion anddevelopment of the worldycareer of the individual isconcerned.

However the loss of theoriginal interpretation of thereligious symbols, their actualmeaning, does serious harmto the spiritual development ofthe Balinese as an individual, and to the spiritual progress ofthe Balinese as a people. Andsince the spiritual symbolismis universal, loss of spiritualconsciousness concerns notonly the Balinese but all ofmankind, as individuals aswell as a race.

But while he was happy toshare some of his knowledge withthe squad, Meninga said he had nohankering to again coach in the NRL.

A f t e r a ch ie v in g o n l ymoderate success in his five years incharge of Canberra from 1997 to2001, Meninga has made his markas a coach in guiding Queensland to

prompted some to suggest the Team

"Not a sneaky full-time job,no," Meninga said when asked if hewas positioning himself.

"I'm very happy where I'm atat the moment, very happy with mylot and I'm very happy to be downhere helping the Raiders.

"I'm here for the week andwith Dave away with the Kangaroosit's a good opportunity to mix with theboys and hopefully impart somewords of wisdom.

"I'd like to be involved all thetime and I'm always involved asmuch as I can be."

Meninga considershimself a mentor to Furner, having coached and playeda longs ide the cu r ren tRaiders boss.

Canberra has madeseveral changes to its set-upand staff for 2012 after its15th-place finish.

    In addressing the

newspaper clippings and it'simportant not to focus on that," hesaid.

"It's a new era and theyneed to go into 2012 with a newattitude and make sure they do therequired work.

"This is the tough part ofthe year, there's no footy and theyhave to work really hard in the off-season to make sure all the

Sanderson has ordered apre-season regime heavy on boxingand wrestling in a bid to returnAdelaide to the finals after a two-yearabsence.

Sanderson oversaw his firstpreseason session this week, directing players to forget the past.

"We're not going to talk aboutthe past at all," he told reporters.

"It's all about a blank canvastoday.

"We have just come in with anew group, new coaches, a differentattitude towards training and a newgame plan ... we have started afresh.

    "As much as I can, I won't

Sanderson said Adelaideneeded a greater physical presence.

"It's what the competitiondemands now - you have got to havestrong, physical players," he said.

"We saw that through thefinals series this year.

"We just need to develop ourplayers with a more physical elementto their game."

Boxing, wrest l ing andgrappling will feature prominently inpreseason training.

"There is a bit of everythinginvolved in that message ofphysicality," he said.

"As a group, we are going tobe a little bit harder on how we train, develop a bit more of a physicalelement to it.

Smith backs Boyd to step upCameron Smith insistsAustralia is good enoughto overcome the loss ofinternational player of they e a r B i l l ySlater and w int h e F o u r

D a r i u sBoyd is expectedto take over at full-back f rom theinjured Slater, withcoach Tim Sheensthen left needing tofind a replacementfor Boyd on thewing.

Slater wasruled out of the remainder of the

Kangaroos' campaign afterbreaking his collarbone early inthe 36-20 win over England atWembley on Saturday.

He was to undergosurgery at a London hospital onMonday to have a plate insertedin his right shoulder - thecollarbone broken in five placesduring his attempted shouldercharge on England winger RyanHall.

The victory ensured theKangaroos a place in the final onNovember 19, but they will haveto win it with without the

Melbourne star.Smith admitted the loss of

the Slater - who last week addedthe international player of theyear award to his NRL Dally Mmedal - was a huge blow to theside, but said his Queenslandteam-mate Boyd was the perfectreplacement.

    " D a r i u s h a s w o npremierships with Brisbane and

St George as a full-backand is a quality player," Smithsaid.

"Billy is obviously a greatplayer and losing him is a big blow

for us."But to have someone of

Darius' class coming in from thewing to replace him shows howgood our squad is."

Slater said he knewalmost immediately that he was instrife following his unsuccessfulattempt to stop Hall from crossingfor the opening try.

"I just got put in thatposition where I've got to try andforce them over the touch line,"Slater told Triple M's Grill Team.

    "I just made contact withhim in a spot where iti m p a c t e d m y

collarbone, it wasshoulder on shoulder."When I put

    my hand on mycollarbone I knew thats o m e t h i n g w a swrong, I knew whatI'd done."

W h i l edisappointed to missthe the Four Nationsfinal, Slater was

    preparations for the2012 NRL season.

"We've got about eightweeks off (after the FourNations). By the time I get back

to training I don'tthink I'll miss toomuch," Sla tersaid.

" I ' l lprobably miss alittle bit of contact(training) but I'll behappy to sit outthose wrestlingsessions in thepreseason."

Smith saidhe did not expectSlater to alter hisfearless approachi n d e f e n c edespite coming

off second best in his clash withHall.

"He is a big guy, RyanHall, but I have seen Billy stoptries many times in thatposition. He just got unlucky,"Smith said.

"He has had a fewinjuries and come back goodbefore so I've no doubt he willbe fine.
