PURPOSE IN LIFERespected and dear brother - priests, religious and laity,

Every day a Sufi monk sat under a tree where four roads met andcrossed each other. The monk never begged for food or money.

Several passers-by approached the monk and sought his advice.One of the travelers, a young man out of curiosity wanted to knowexactly what that monk was doing there. He stood a few yardsaway from the monk.

The monk did not show much interest in listening or talking or givingany advice to those who approached him.

As the young man was observing the Sufi monk, all on a sudden,he saw a shabby dressed poor man coming towards the monkwith a heavy load on his head.

He said to the monk: Venerable Sir, I have to go to a village nearby.I do not know the direction well. The four roads make me veryconfused.

The monk immediately stood up and accompanied the traveler andshowed him the right direction. Then he returned to the road side.

The young man asked the monk why he showed so much of interestin showing the way to the poor passer-by.

The monk replied: Today I met dozens of people. Of all the peopleI met today, only that poor man had a definite goal and purposein life.

What matters in life is our goal or purpose. Always the enddetermines the beginning.

Victor Frankl, an Austrian psychologist, claims that the need to findsome meaning in life is more basic to a human being thanpleasure or power or anything else. The thesis he repeats againand again is that if a person has a "why" to live, he can endurealmost any "how." But if that dimension of "why" is lacking,then the whole structure of one's life eventually collapses.

Life does not consist in what a person possesses, but in whatpossesses him.

Let us be possessed by high goals and great purposes.

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Inida (CBCI) has exhorted its
