As we began stitching this issue together, we came across an overarching
theme that seems to be the buzz phrase of the moment: buy local. From our
vendors to our student writers and designers to our models, everything has
roots in Lexington.
This issue is jam-packed with incredible photography, stories and tips all
revolving around the amazing city in which we live. We had the opportunity
to partner with four locations unique to Lexington for our shoots – a bistro, a
bookstore, a fi tness studio and a grocery store (yes, you read that right). And
we teamed up with Alex McLean, Lexington native, NYC dweller and editor of
fashion blog LexWhatWear, to bring you inspiration for styling our top spring
trends.
We also got to work with some of the driving forces behind Kentucky’s
locavore movement – Shop Local Kentucky, who’s Instagram following
jumped almost overnight to 20,000, and My Kentucky Tee, a tee shirt
subscription service (think Birchbox for Kentucky merch) intent on spreading
Commonwealth pride.
As we step into spring, the season of all things fresh and new, it’s important
to remember the people and places around you. The boutiques and vintage
shops are trés chic, as are the local eateries, co ee shops and green spaces.
Get out and explore your city, Wildcats.
Think what you will, local is here to stay.

Monochrome is and will continue to be a personal favorite fashion
trend of mine. Black and white is clear cut, easy style. From tops
to bottoms and everything in between, monochrome is more
versatile than ever and looking quite bright for spring ’15.
In the season ahead, this sleek style will embrace many other it-list
trends. On the runways, we saw monochrome take on gingham
prints, statement shirt collars, bold stripes, masculine influences
and transparency designs. To me this is a huge step for the fashion
industry. Anyone and everyone, from your all-American girls to
your fashion moguls, can play with trends right from the runway
and weave them into the real world.
My top tips for trying the monochrome trend is to wear pieces
that fit your body. Black and white can be forgiving, but you
don’t want it to send the wrong message. Wear pieces that flow
and flatter your shape and style. I often need to find balance
between structured bottoms and oversized tops. I tend to rely
on monochrome styles to achieve balance while still making a
statement.

How did you get the idea to do a fashion blog?
I had followed blogs long before the blogger-surge, and I would
refer to them often. Although there were only a few fashion
blogs out at that time, I had a daily routine in place that allowed
me to follow their outfi ts, inspiration and style tips. Then a co-
worker mentioned the idea of starting her own blog. I often sat
with her as we would talk through her ideas, and I remember
feeling excited and almost envious of her new adventure. As
her blog went live, I knew I could absolutely do it, too. She was
an inspiration for me and set the bar very high. When she later
approached me about starting a sister-blog to her year-old
website, I was all in immediately. At that point I had studied and
researched every outlet I could. I knew what I had to do to make
it successful and FUN for myself. When I launched in August of
2011, I had no idea it would become what it has.
How has living in New York City changed your perceptions of
fashion - and what it means to the average person?
Fashion in New York is very much like an individual sport.
It takes practice and it takes a lot of who you are to make a
“winning” look. Style here is not gimmicky. To be honest, I feel
like good NYC style is more scrappy. You gotta pick up those
pieces in your wardrobe and create the look you want. It’s never
overdone here; no caked on makeup and sky-high hair. It’s more
about fi nding the right elements of your style and building a
foundation to build on.
What tips can people living outside New York City pick up
from the NYC fashion scene? (In other words, how can NYC
fashion be practical fashion for the average person?)
Most of the looks and styles you see in magazines and on
television cost a fortune. Fashion advertising can often make
us feel like we will never make enough or have enough to fi t in
with the trends. I’m here to tell you that not everyone in New
York is running around in Manolo Blahnik pumps with a Celine
bag tossed over their shoulder. People here are working hard to
look good, too. Part of my mission is to use Lex What Wear as a
style tool to show others how inexpensive pieces can still look
like a million bucks. Forget the NYC fashion you see in the media
and think about how you can take current trends into your
own hands using your budget. Lastly, I will say that the most
important tip I can give anyone is to have basics that you love.
Build your wardrobe around them and you’ll be surprised at how
quick you fi t into the fashion scene.
ALEX MCLEAN lex what wear
No longer reserved for your all-
American picnics, gingham goes
grown-up for spring with sheer
fabric, cutouts and high slits. Opt
for baby blue, and black and white
instead of the traditional fi re engine
red. Our favorites: Oscar de la Renta
and Diane von Ferstenburg.

Navy is unmistakably the NEW black
for the spring/summer season. After
a stunning appearance on fashion’s
biggest runways, this powerful color is
having a major moment at the top of the
trend list. Added bonus: Styling navy with
your current wardrobe is incredibly easy!
I prefer a more tailored navy look (i.e.,
suit separates, structured blouses, pleated
skirts, etc.). I see it as a classic color that
pairs perfectly with bright shades like
orange and pink. When paired with a pop
of color, a navy blazer suits my style best.
I took many notes from the spring
runways for unique wasy to style navy
in the season ahead. For starters, a navy
maxi dress will never fail you. Secondly,
an all-navy look is not too much; it’s
head-to-toe perfection. Lastly, when all
else fails, navy is the most reliable preppy
color. Whether you tend to lean more
nautical or more Southern belle, you can’t
go wrong with the must-have color.

Considered one of the strongest trends for the coming
season, polka dots are already making a notable appearance
at celebrity red carpet events, on the covers of top fashion
magazines and in spring/summer 2015 collections for
namesake brands such as Dolce & Gabbana. Polka dots have
survived multiple decades in fashion, yet they
remain relevant and cool.
For the warmer days ahead, I see polka dots playing a huge
part in both corporate and casual dressing. When paired with
converse sneakers, a boyfriend jean and a light jacket, they
can be cute and simple. If you pair your polka dots with a
fitted pant, culottes or a pencil skirt, they become sleek and
sophisticated. I’d suggest a solid cardigan or blazer to top o
your professional polka dot look.
The final key note to making this trend part of your wardrobe
is to find the right piece - something that adheres to your
style sense and personality. A print should not wear you, you
should wear the print - and wear it well. Don’t be afraid to
have a little fun and seek some inspiration from Pinterest,
style magazines and, of course, your favorite bloggers.

IT’S A LOCAL THING
Shop Local Kentucky
Meet Rick Paynter, you probably follow
him on Instagram. He’s the mastermind
behind the fl ourishing company, Shop
Local Kentucky. When he’s not working
as a social media consultant, he’s blowing
up your Instagram feed with pictures of
awesome landscapes, food, co ee and
Kentucky merch.
Q: You said you came into the apparel
thing by accident and I know you’ve
been working on an app. It’s been halt-
ed from what I understand.
A: The funny thing about the whole Shop
Local Kentucky thing is that it started out
with the best intentions of creating that
app and creating this community around
shopping local. And while I think that
we’ve achieved that on a certain level,
the feedback that we get from businesses
is that it’s not
what they
want –they
didn’t see it
as helpful. My
vision for it
was, a guy’s
in Pikeville and he doesn’t know where
to eat so he pulls out the Shop Local
Kentucky app and fi nds what’s around
him and eats at a local place. [Local busi-
nesses] didn’t see that as a winning point
and I get that totally. We kinda had to
change our whole scheme of things and
my thought on that was let’s turn it into a
place where people can buy locally made
goods by local makers, local designers,
local printers and become a commerce
site where people know that they’re
buying something local.
We’re pretty proud of that, we keep about
80% of the revenue of the site in state
boundaries. That’s big for our community
Q: You have mastered social media, at
least from a selling aspect. How’d you
get to that point?
A: I decided to do social media marketing
as a consultant, it started o slow kind of
as a silly venture that grew into an actual
business and that’s what I do. I run a
business called Georgetown Geek. We do
the full gamut of small business mar-
keting. That’s really where it got started.
With it being called Shop Local Kentucky,
I think it appealed to people on a higher
level than if it were Bob’s Apparel Compa-
ny. I don’t want to say it was easy by any
means. We spend a lot of time on it and
I think that’s something that sets us apart
from other brands. When I look at social
media and see the brands who are doing
it well, they’re not doing it between 9 and
5, they’re doing it 24/7… I think that peo-
ple can go ‘oh they’re showing a picture
of a co ee mug with North Lime on it’,
people can put themselves in that place.
Q: We talk about this rich community
that we have; how can UK students get
involved?
A: I think that the community as a whole
and our generation, ours and the one
above us, has taken this huge shift and
it’s so obvious by our co ee choices, beer
choices, food choices, anything, keep on
going. I think that clothing is no excep-
tion. We’re seeing this resurgence of local
clothing companies. Anything that we
can do locally,
regardless
of wheth-
er you’re
involved in
a group or
marching
downtown, the best thing we can do
is seek out these local places, eat weird
food, drink weird drinks. That’s how you
learn.
Meet who we’re calling the Tee Masters – three local shops selling crazy awesome tees
(and sweatshirts) that brag on all of the goodness Kentucky has to o er.
Each brand locally sources its wares, has a pretty hefty social media following (what’s up
millenials!) and fi nds a way to give back to the Lexington community.
Here’s the even better part – they’re a ordable! What better way to show
your Kentucky pride than by wearing locally made apparel? Here, we give you
a peek inside what it takes to make Kentucky Proud happen.
The best thing we can do is seek out local places, eat weird food, drink weird drinks. That’s how you learn.
The best thing we can do is seek out local places, eat The best thing we can do is seek out local places, eat weird food, drink weird drinks. That’s how you learn.

My Kentucky Tee
Following in the footsteps of Birch-
box, Graze and Club W (check
these guys out if you haven’t
already) the folks over at My Ken-
tucky Tee jumped on the month-
ly subscription trend, but they
put a Kentucky twist on it. For $15
per month, subscribers receive a
beautifully designed tee that’s all about
love for the Commonwealth. Previous
designs include the ‘Intro Shirt’ (see p.27),
the ‘Everything Bluegrass’ shirt (p.31),
the February 2015 design (a Kentucky
heart for Valentine’s Day) and the March
2015 design featuring everyone’s favorite
beverage container – the Mason jar.
If that’s not awesome in itself, My
Kentucky Tee recently partnered with
the Finley Foundation for the Finley
Valentine’s Campaign to help raise
awareness and research funding for SIDS
– sudden infant death syndrome. The
Finley Foundation was established by
two parents who lost their 3-month-old
son to SIDS. My Kentucky Tee designed
custom shirts, in red and pink, with a
radiating heart in the shape of Kentucky.
To help support a local cause, $6 of
every sale went to SIDS research via the
Finley Foundation. According to the My
Kentucky Tee site, the campaign raised
$1,422.
The Morris Book ShopWho they are: An incredibly diverse and

Natasha’s Bistro & Bar 112 Esplanade AlleyWho they are: Your new favorite downtown hangout. It’s a bar and bistro with delicious food and killer live entertainment. Why we love them: The sta is super friendly and they’re always looking to collaborate with local bands, causes and publications. Standout feature: College night! Every Tuesday, Natasha’s oers buy one get one on all appetizers, well drinks and selected beers and wines. Let’s not leave out the open mic. night, build-your-own ramen and jazz night. Bonus: Internship opportunities are in the works!
Euclid Kroger 704 Euclid Avenue Who they are: Kroger reimagined. Why we love them: For all of the amazing additions (DIY pizza and cupcake stations, the ample parking, the Starbucks), for the nod to Lexington artists and for letting us run around the store in fancy gowns for our final shoot. Standout feature: Hands down, the produce section. It’s variety and sheer volume rivals the Whole Foods selection and it’s super close to campus.
Pure Barre + Sweat 867 E. High Street Who they are: A pair of glorious fitness studios oering a variety of classes bound to snap you into shape. Why we love them: They’re community oriented, oer incredibly challenging and fun classes and have student deals. Standout feature: The room full of rowing machines. It makes us feel like we’re Claire and Francis Underwood from House of Cards – the power couple to end all power couples. Logic dictates, if we work out like the Underwood’s, we will become the Underwood’s, right?

What motivated you to
write a novel?
I’ve always felt, and still do,
that I have things to say, but I
usually lacked the motivation. I used
this year’s National Novel Writing Month
(NaNoWriMo) contest as an incentive for me to fi nally put
the words on paper.
What are your biggest inspirations?
On a local note, UK’s own Professor Hannah Pittard. She’s
living proof that my dream is possible, and she’s a great
teacher. More abstractly, when I’m at my Dad’s house in
Georgia, the sky gets crazy clear at night. Looking at all the
stars and the moon usually gets me thinking.
What’s your recommendation to other students who want
to become writers?
Ha! I don’t think I’m nearly qualifi ed to give anyone advice.
If I had to, I’d say to keep writing and share your works with
those whose opinions
you trust. You probably
won’t like your initial
works, but that dislike means you
have taste – and that’s all you need to get
better.
What are you currently reading?
It’s been harder to read on my own now that the semester
is in full swing. I just fi nished Raymond Carver’s short-story
collection, What We Talk About When We Talk About Love. I
plan to try to tackle Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina very soon.
If you were to make a playlist for your life, what would it
be called and why?
“Stu Happened” That’s probably a cop-out answer. That’s a
tough question. I feel like life is so arbitrary that it can’t really
be summed up in a few words and have it be much di erent
than that.

a junior English and Andrew Turner,
French double major who just fi nished his fi rst novel. Yes, you
read that right. Outside of his classes, work and French Club meetings (he’s the president), he wrote a 200-page novel called Flight. And he did it
in one month.

What are fi ve things you can’t live
without?
My headphones. My Bonnaroo
wristbands. My half-sized notebooks.
My ukulele. And my Kia Soul (aka the
hamstermobile).
What are your top three style basics?
A good-fi tting coat. In the winter, it’s
such a huge part of our daily wear, so
it’s worth getting the right one. I like
mine just a little bit on the snug side.
A nice set of pants – jeans or khakis.
It has to hit that sweet spot, though –
snug but not too skinny is the way to
go for me. I’ve got to give a shout-out
to the fl annel button-down. Crazy
comfortable and I love the look.
Who would you invite, dead or alive,
to a dinner party?
Justin Vernon (lead singer for Bon
Iver – my favorite band). There hasn’t
been a single release from him that
I haven’t loved. And his interviews
make him seem really down to earth –
something I can get behind.
What is the trend you like the most?
The return of the elbow patch
sweaters! It’s probably a really
pretentious thing (and dare I say,
hipster) but I think they look great
when done correctly.
What’s the trend you hope to see die?
Leggings! They are not substitutes for
pants, people!
What’s the most important lesson life
has taught you?
Life is in the little things. Looking at
the big picture is daunting, and even
overwhelming at times. It’s important
to enjoy the small things as much as
possible – even if it’s just your favorite
song coming up on shu± e.
What’s your most treasured
possession and why?
Probably my vinyl copy of Bon Iver’s
album, Bon Iver, Bon Iver (a little
redundant, I know), for two reasons. It
was, and is, the most infl uential album
on my life thus far. Also it represents
my modest vinyl-collecting hobby. It’s
really nice to come home after a long
day, throw on that album, and just let
it spin.
What is the most underrated word?
Lexicon. A fun word about one of the
things I love most. It’s a win-win.
What’s your favorite quote?
“So it goes.” – Kurt Vonnegut,
Slaughter-House Five
”” When I lie down, I am transported back in time. Like when you listen to
a song that you haven’t heard for years and all the memories of that era come
with it. I’m twelve, listening to my CD player play a Bowling for Soup album.
I’m sixteen; it’s the fi rst time I snuck my girlfriend Lucy in for a night. And I’m
nineteen, packed and ready to leave the next morning. I’m nineteen, crying into
my pillow – over friends I have lost already and others that I will lose soon. I’m
nineteen; afraid the world will swallow me like it did to Jay.
I’m twenty-six again.
I roll over and tuck myself underneath the covers.
Sleep approaches with just a single word hovering over my consciousness.
Okay.
