A Message from the Rabbi...President’s MessageThe holiday of Hanukkah recalls the miracle of the Maccabees’ victory over the Syrian Greeks. Against truly overwhelming odds, the Jews fought and won a war over a more numerous and powerful foe.

In the wake of their victory, they set about cleaning up the Temple which had been defiled. During the clean up, they discovered

that all of the oil used in lighting the menorah had been tainted, save just one day’s worth.

From here, we know the story well. Oil that was supposed to last for just one day instead lasted for eight. Hence, the eight days of Hanukkah. We light eight candles, one for each day the oil miraculously burned.

Only there is a problem. The miracle lasted only seven days.

Think about it. There was enough oil for one day. That was never in question. The miracle was that one day’s worth of oil lasted another seven days.

The seven subsequent days of Hanukah were miraculous, not the first one. Nonetheless, we light eight candles.

So, what is the miracle of the first night if it wasn’t the oil?

The miracle was that the Maccabees dared to even light a candle knowing in advance that it might only burn for a short time. They took the leap believing that somehow things would work out.

We have to do the same. Whether we are starting a new career, opening up a business, beginning a new relationship, or learning a new skill – we have to begin at the beginning, not knowing what the future holds.

There is a chance we might fail. The oil might last just one day. But there is also a chance that it will last. But nothing, absolutely nothing will happen if we don’t – metaphorically speaking – light that first candle.

On the first night of Hanukkah this year, may we all give some thought as to what we need to begin in our lives. Light the first candle, believe in miracles and take the first step.

B’shalom,Rabbi Michael Resnick

Although the high holidays have recently passed, I find myself reminiscing about the incredible experience I had attending services and partaking in the bountiful kiddushes and delicious holiday meals. As Temple President, it was quite a moving experience for me to sit on the Bima gazing into the sanctuary and seeing it

completely filled to capacity. I witnessed a sacred community coming together in prayer. The sunlight illuminated the beautiful stained glass windows and casting a warm glow over our congregation. As always, Rabbi Resnick's words were thought-provoking and inspirational. Hazzan Feuer’s magnificent voice, in collaboration with our music director Claudio Waisgluss, lifted our souls through prayer and song. The angelic voices of Kate Richman, Mya Bodnick and Emily Kirschner raised our services to an even higher level and still resonate in my head.

I am prouder than ever to be a member of Temple Emanu-El. In this spiritual home, there are countless opportunities that bring us together throughout the year to learn, to laugh and to grow. Our Women’s League offers vibrant programming and this year we look forward to re-inventing our Men’s Club. We enjoy a multitude of incredible cultural arts programs, world class speakers and educational forums. Emotional encouragement is extended to those in need through our support groups. And don't forget the food - Shabbat dinners, Onegs, Kiddushes - catered lovingly by Marla Weinman.

Regardless of whatever service or event you attend at Temple Emanu-El, I am certain that each time you leave our synagogue you will be more inspired, enlightened and more connected to our congregation. There is something here for everyone.

Temple Emanu-El is a place where spirituality and community come together. It is a place where we all come to find peace, inspiration and comfort - enabling us to be better and to do better. Here we celebrate our Judaism in good times and it is where we come to find comfort in bad times. This spiritual home is one of the constants you can depend on in our ever changing lives and in an ever changing world. Within these walls we can renew and fuel the divine spark in us that guides us to make the proper ethical and moral decisions. And, inside these walls we come together not just as a congregation but as a family ...... a family bound together by love and by the practices and traditions of Judaism.

In the early 1950s, Gertrude Berg and Philip Loeb, the pioneering stars of television’s groundbreaking sitcom, The Goldbergs, heroically struggle to save their show, their careers, and their friendship in the face of McCarthyism, anti-Semitism, and the political climate of the country. Based on actual events, Ordinary Americans reveals the double-edged sword between speaking out and staying silent.

WOMEN’S LEAGUE "Not for Women Only". Men, if a program piques your interest, please join us!

As the sun sets on Simchat Torah and the “holiday season” draws to a close, we all take a collective deep breath. It has been an intensive month of spiritual experiences – contemplative, soulful and joyous. The excitement continues as every day more of our temple family come “home” to Florida

and Temple Emanu-El.

Be sure to mark your calendars for Monday, November 18 at 1:00pm, when we officially open our programming season with “Our Women of Medicine”. This promises to be a lively interactive conversation with our Temple members whose personal journeys into the field of medicine will enlighten and inspire us.

Our next Sybil Sanders Legacy Book Club will meet on Monday, November 25. Mickey Feldberg will review The Last Watchman of Old Cairo by Michael David Lukas. Book lovers will also want to join the Temple Emanu-El tables at the annual JCC Celebrating Sisterhood Brunch on Tuesday, December 3 at Temple Judea. Marra B. Gad will be reviewing her new book – The Color of Love. Invitations will arrive shortly.

Our membership response has been astounding to date. Be sure to join us at our annual Membership Luncheon on Tuesday, December 17th as we celebrate all of our members and are treated to a “red carpet” program, featuring Mara Reinstein, film critic for US Weekly. Watch for your invitations.

The fun continues weekly at our Game Day on Thursdays from 1:30 to 4:00 pm. Come join a game of Canasta or Mah-jongg. Lessons are available from 12:30 to 1:30. All levels of play are welcome.

Women’s League is ready with a full and diverse schedule of programs and activities. We hope that you will join us, engage with us and become involved. Participating in Women’s League activities provides a great way to meet a dynamic group of women. Come to a program, join a committee, volunteer for one of our projects or shop in our beautiful Gift Shoppe.

What’s more, as a Women’s League member, you are part of Women’s League for Conservative Judaism. Check out the Women’s League website at WLCJ.org. It offers a treasure trove of information. For example, you can participate in Women’s League Reads – a worldwide conversation on books of interest to today’s Jewish women, with exclusive author interviews, or you may Study with Scholars – learning from prominent Jewish scholars in group videoconferencing. The possibilities are endless.

In closing, I would like to remind you that our Torah Fund theme this year is Chesed – loving kindness. We are empowered Jewish women. Let us all take on the challenge of helping to create a kinder, gentler world.

B’Shalom,Marjie Konigsberg

Women’s League President Message

The Torah Fund Luncheon is the annual event to honor an outstanding Women’s League member who contributed to the Torah Fund cause, supporting the JTS work. The Women’s League chose Hana Siegelstein to be this year’s honoree.

Hana’s Jewish journey started during her childhood in the Czech Republic and her connection with the Torah was forged by her parents. “It’s better to be kind than to be right” was an early childhood memory that was drummed into her. Chesed (meaning loving kindness) is this year’s theme for the Torah Fund, and it is emphasized on the Torah Fund Pin. Hana’s Chesed is well-known, and it is acknowledged by her selection as this year’s Torah Fund Honoree.

As a teenager, Hana came to the US with her family and settled in Brooklyn, NY, where she would eventually meet the young man that she was destined to spend the rest of her life with. She went to the School of Visual Arts, and graduated with a Fine Arts Degree. After working as an artist in an ad agency, Hana married Andy Siegelstein. She made a career adjustment to Interior Design to provide flexibility for their future family life. Hana became an ASID member, as her Interior design career blossomed. Hana and Andy had three boys in Brooklyn (Eric, Adam & Dan), joined a Conservative temple and started Jewish day school for Eric when he was three years old.

The young family then embraced suburban life, as they moved to north-central Connecticut after their third son (Danny) was born. The family’s Torah journey continued in Connecticut with Jewish Day School and Bar Mitzvah prep.

Following another of Andy’s career moves, the young Siegelstein family moved to central New Jersey, where they became members of the local Conservative Jewish community. Hana embraced the Women’s League: first the gift shop, then became Women’s League Treasurer, then President and Temple Board member, plus Board member of Jewish Family Services. Andy’s power project management career required another move just before 9/11, this time to Houston, where they stayed for about 10 years. Hana worked full time as an Interior Designer there. They became members of the local Conservative Jewish community at Brith Shalom, where she served as a Women’s League Board member.

Hana stepped up further as a Houston Holocaust Museum Docent, focusing on educating kids from all backgrounds and religions on the European Jewish journey that ended in the Holocaust experience.

In 2011, the Siegelstein family moved to Jupiter, FL, where they became members of Temple Emanu-El and the local Jewish community. Hana’s Jewish experience was enhanced by Rabbi Asher Bar Zev’s class, and adult education at TEPB in general. A steep change came after a Melton course about Israel and a subsequent visit to Israel, home to Hana and Andy’s extended family and friends, and eternal home of the Jewish people. As uplifting as that trip was, it was supplemented in the other direction by visits to some of the Jewish murder fields of Europe, where Hana’s and Andy’s grandparents and much of their families were murdered in cold blood.

Hana is currently working on her Bat Mitzvah, including learning the ancient Hebrew language essential for Torah reading, and expects to graduate with her Bat Mitzvah class in April 2020. Hana is an Executive Board Member of TEPB and the TEPB Women’s League.

Being a caregiver can be mentally, physically, and emotionally draining under the best of circumstances. The challenges of caring for a sick or elderly loved one can result in caregivers ignoring their

own physical and emotional health, often to the extent that they don't recognize or cope with the symptoms of stress that they are experiencing. Temple Emanu-El's Caregiver Support Group offers a safe place to discuss the stresses and challenges of providing care for a loved one as well as

strategies for also caring for yourself.

This year is already off to a great start in the Rothman Religious School and Beach Youth Groups. We have already accomplished so much and are excited to continue the learning and fun.

The students in the Rothman Religious School have been hard at work learning about everything that Judaism has to offer. Our main curriculum is centered on seven core values: Teshuvah, B’Tzelem Elohim, Gevurah, Achrayut, Hakarat Hatov, Koach Hadibur, and Shalom. Each month our students explore the connections that can be made to Torah, holidays, and everyday Jewish life through each value. Throughout the months of September and October our students studied Teshuvah, taking responsibility for one’s own actions, and B’Tzelem Elohim, honoring the image of G-d in ourselves and others. Through these lessons our students are becoming more knowledgeable Jewish youth and are

developing a positive Jewish identity. We also had our first Family Art and Education Series project where our families had an in-depth lesson about Tzedakah and then constructed their own family Tzedakah box. We are looking forward to the remaining projects in the series. If you would like to join for the remaining projects, please let Marc know.

Rothman Religious School registration is currently open to all families with children in Kindergarten through 7th grade. If you or someone you know would like to receive more information about our school, please contact us at www.tepb.org/education/religious-school

Yala! is off to an amazing start! Our Yala! students are exploring the Jewish take on current events and “Hot Topics”. Yala! is open to all Post-B’nai Mitzvah teens. If you know of anyone that would like to participate, they are always welcome to join. See our calendar for exact dates. Registration for Yala! is also open at this time!

Beach Youth has kicked off our year and are in full swing with programming. We Tee’d Off the year at our Kickoff event with Arvot USY at Top Golf and had a blast reconnecting with old friends and making new. We then celebrated Sukkot with our annual Sushi in the Sukkah and Havdalah Dinner. This event is always a great opportunity for our teens to connect after the hectic High Holidays. If you haven’t already registered for Beach Youth Groups, please do so. Membership information can be found at https://www.tepb.org/youth-families or contact us so we can send the information your way.

Please remember that our school and youth programs are open to all families, so if you know of any families with children interested in joining either, bring them to an event! If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out by phone (561) 832-0804, or [email protected]

CLERGY GRATUITIES

Members inquire from time to time what the proper protocol is for recognizing the Rabbi and Hazzan for officiating at life-cycle events. The answer is that the Rabbi and Hazzan are paid by the Temple to provide those services to our members. Therefore, separate compensation is neither charged nor expected for those services. However, if a person feels motivated to do more, we recommend that contributions be made to the Temple in honor of the Rabbi and/or Hazzan. Each of them also maintains a discretionary fund from which financial assistance is provided to those in our congregation and our larger community who are in need.
