The staff of KDHS would like to thank all parents/carers and students for your patience and understanding during

Semester One and look forward to a positive and productive end to the 2020 school year.

We would also like to acknowledge the fantastic effort our two GATE students have put in over the semester. Matilda

Parker and Sarah Cussons have worked extremely hard to achieve excellent results in the Gifted and Talented

Program, offered online. Both students received Certificates of Excellence in their respective subjects. I would like to

congratulate Jackson Cowie, Year 6, who sat the GATE admission test this year and has been accepted into the

program for 2021. Well done to all three students, on your excellent academic achievements.

Goodbye

This term we say goodbye to two members of the teaching staff. Mr Ross Woolf joined us in Week 4, from the Flying

Squad, to cover the Science and Maths classes in High School. I would like to thank Mr Woolf for his positive

contributions and wish him well for his next placement. Mrs Hill and Miss Livingstone will be away for the rest of 2020,

taking some well-earned long service leave.

We also say goodbye to Mr Derek Ringrose, who is making the move to Derby DHS, to take on a leadership position in

a Student Services role. Mr Ringrose will be sadly missed by the students and school community.

Welcome

We welcome Mrs Alison Watson back in Term Three. Mrs Watson will return to teaching in the Year One class with Mrs

Taryn Sexton, for the rest of the year. Ms Amy Baxter will move to the Year Five class while Mrs Hill is on leave.

Ms Coral Lloyd will be joining our team in a teaching role for the rest of this year and will cover the Maths and Science

areas in High School. Ms Lloyd has been working in a support role for a few weeks as part of the Department’s re-

engagement strategy.

Miss Melanie Naisbitt will also be joining our team for the remainder of 2020, as the PE specialist.

School Development Days Term 3

We will have two pupil free days in Term 3 due to the compulsory planning day we had in Term 2. The first will be on

Monday 20th July and the second on Monday 7th September.

New Partnerships for 2020

KDHS will partner with Southern Dirt, Narrogin Agricultural College, Forestry Industries Federation and Palmerston to

support our students wellbeing and increase their opportunities to be involved in a wider range of curriculum initiatives.

We have some exciting projects planned; involving STEM, career counselling and agricultural trials, so stay tuned!

Details and updates of projects will be posted on our website once they commence.

IPS

Selection for IPS 2020 was announced last week. KDHS was not one of the 29 schools selected in this round. This

does not take away at all from the strong culture that has emerged in recent times, the strong leadership and the strong

partnership with community. Although IPS recognition would have been nice to have had, further school progression

and improvement will occur with or without IPS status. I would like to thank the School Council, staff and community for

your support in this process. We have developed a strong improvement plan, as part of the development program and

have the support of our Regional Executive Director, that KDHS is a progressive and well led school.

Capital Works and Site Improvement

When school resumes, in Term 3, you will be pleased to see a number of physical improvements completed. We have

scheduled a revamp of the upper primary corridor, new carpets to classrooms on that wing and new carpet to the

junior/HS corridor plus repainting of the senior toilet block. Mrs Clifton and her mosaic club have constructed some

fabulous pieces of artwork to replace our weathered signage.

Semester One Reports

A reminder that your child will be bringing home their Semester One report today. Year 10 students will also have a

copy of their Round 1 OLNA results. There is an explanatory note in the cover regarding the absence of a subject grade

and general nature of some learning area comments, due. to COVID - 19. If your child’s teacher has requested an

interview or you would like to speak to one of the staff, please contact the front office or teacher direct, to make an

appointment.

OLNA Year 9 and 10

Round 2 OLNA, for Year 10 students, will commence on 31st August 2020. Due to the COVID - 19 situation and Year 9

students not having sat NAPLAN, for 2020 only, Year 9 students will be able to access a modified OLNA test. This will

commence on 10th August. It is vitally important your child is present for these tests in order to meet the minimum

requirements for Literacy and Numeracy.

Year 10 Career Counselling

The Year 10 students have been working with Mrs Webb and Mrs Fleay to map out potential academic and career

pathways for beyond Year 10. Mr Lindsay Campbell, from the SW Engagement and Transition Team also held

individual meetings with students, last week. Mr Campbell will return on Monday 3rd August, to speak with students and

their parent/carer to assist in planning for Year 11/12 or employment opportunities. If you would like to schedule an

appointment, please contact Mrs Roser.

YouthCARE Treasure Hunters

Youth Care will be offering a program, starting in Term 3, for any student who wishes to participate. The 30min

sessions will run during lunchtimes from the Chaplaincy room. More information will be available next term.

It was so lovely to see all the kids happy and back at school this term after such a disruptive start to the year! Wishing

GREEN TEAM NEWS This term we have counted 1623 Nude lunch tickets, even with the COVID-19 interruptions at school we have managed to tally up 3000 Nude Tickets for Semester 1! Great work to everyone doing their bit for our environment. The benefits of packing a rubbish free lunch are wide-ranging:

FAREWELL

To the Community of Kojonup, as you may be aware I have been appointed the Student Services Coordinator for Derby

DHS. This was a very difficult decision to make as I love this community. The community spirit was the main reason why

Kayla and I decided to come back to Kojonup this year. We loved this place during my first stint at KDHS. However, in

life I believe it is important that you take the opportunities given. Being a Student Services Coordinator is something that

I am extremely passionate about and an area that I believe I can make a difference in. I know the timing is not ideal and

some people maybe be disappointed in this decision, but I wanted to let you know that I am very grateful to spend the

last 6 months in this beautiful community. Kojonup will always hold a special place in my heart.

MINI BEAST DAY - 30th June Kindy, Pre Primary, Year 1, Year 2 & Year 2/3 What a BUG day it was!!! You could definitely, say there was a ‘buzz’ in the air. We were so blown away with the fabulous costumes that the children arrived in. There had been some very busy families making them. Everyone looked so great. We had everything from dragonflies to rhinoceros beetles to worms to spiders and HEAPS more. There was every mini beast you could think of. The children were mixed up into five groups and rotated around the classes over the day doing all sorts of fun mini beast related activities. It was so wonderful to see all of the children mixing so well and that the ‘big kids’ took on their roles of looking after the Kindy and Pre Primary children very seriously. We were so proud of all of the children. What better way to finish off the day than to have a treasure hunt. The children were very excited to get their gold and silver mini beast to take home. We couldn’t have had the day if it wasn’t for the amazing people that came in and helped out all day! You are all super stars and we were so thankful for your fabulous help.

FARM FUN On Tuesday 30th June, the students in the year 4 and 3/4 classes headed up to the farm for a day of fun and adventure. With the support of some amazing parents, the students were able to complete a variety of different activities. The activities ranged from orienteering to swag rolling to tightrope walking. Throughout these activities the students had to work together as a team to complete them. The students used their knowledge of compasses and compass points to navigate around a course, solving clues and collecting stamps. We definitely had some amazing shelter building and swag rolling students in our classes. There were also a couple of students who were able to successfully cross the tightrope without any support. Despite the wind and the rain, all of the students seemed to have an amazing day.

MATHEMATICS COMPETITION The Australian Maths Trust is running a nationwide Mathematics competition. This is an online mathematics competition

that will be offered to students, during school time, on Thursday 30th July. The competition is divided into 4 categories,

Years 3 & 4, Years 5 & 6, Year 7 & 8 and Years 9 & 10, includes 30 questions and lasts 30 minutes for Primary School

and 75 minutes for High School. There is a cost of $6 per student for participation. If you would like your child/children to

participate could you, please complete the attached permission slips with $6 to school by the 24th of July.
