1st May 2014

FROM THE ACTING PRINCIPAL – Bob Trouchet I would like to welcome everyone back for Term 2. Mrs Clayton has been selected to work as the principal of Harvey Senior High School for the next two terms and is then taking long service leave for the final term of this year. She does however assure me that she will be coming back to participate in the cross country run during week 3. I have been asked to temporarily take the position of principal for 3 – 10 weeks until a replacement principal is appointed for the rest of the year. Mr Mark Marsh and Mrs Kate Fleay will be jointly acting in the role of Deputy Principal (Secondary) for this time. Other new staff are Mr James Rentoule who is replacing Ms Heidi Tyler for Term 2 and Mrs Jane Lee who is replacing Ms Beta Fleay for the rest of the year. Mrs Jayde McIvor has been confirmed in the position of Deputy Principal (Primary) until the end of Term 3. Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will be sitting the NAPLAN tests in week 3. These now have increased importance to Year 9 students. To graduate from Year 12, students must be able to demonstrate satisfactory Literacy and Numeracy levels. If they are able to do so in Year 9 NAPLAN then they are exempt from completing the Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessment (OLNA). Otherwise students must repeat the OLNA tests (twice per year) until they reach the required standard. The school farm garden will be open on the Mother‟s Day weekend, 10

th and 11

th May, as part of the Australian Open

Garden scheme along with two others in town. Mrs Cathy Wright has been organising our participation and I encourage all parents and students to participate and support this initiative. We have recently received continuing certification as an asthma friendly school (and a free asthma emergency kit). Please contact the School Nurse, Mrs Carol Nicholls, for details regarding asthma or the care of your child. Parents of secondary students would have received a booking sheet and note about the parent afternoon with their child‟s Term One Report. You will have a chance to speak with your child‟s teachers on Thursday 8

th May.

Well done to our School Leaders and St Bernard‟s School Leaders for hosting our ANZAC service today, and thank you to all our staff for the preparation of this event.

FROM THE DEPUTY ACTING PRINCIPAL PRIMARY – Jayde McIvor Welcome back to Term 2! It is very pleasing to see everyone back looking excited and ready to learn. I would like to wish Mrs Clayton all the best for her new role at Harvey Senior High School, and welcome Mrs Kate Fleay to the administration team. Due to Mrs Clayton‟s absence I will be remaining in the Deputy Principal role until the end of Term 3. ANZAC Day Service The combined school ANZAC Day service was held today, Thursday 1

st May. I would like to sincerely thank all our special

guests, community members and parents who attended the service. Well done to the Kojonup District High School & St Bernard‟s School Leaders who hosted the commemoration. Open Garden Day at the Kojonup School Farm The school farm will be open as a part of the Open Garden Scheme on Saturday 10

th and Sunday 11

th May. Each class

will have their hard work on display at the farm as well as some produce that will be for sale. Please contact your child‟s class/form teacher if you are available to help out over the weekend. I look forward to seeing you all there! NAPLAN Week 3 The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual national assessment for all students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9 – this will be held in week 3 on Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday. All students in these year levels are expected to participate in tests in Reading, Writing, Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and Numeracy. NAPLAN is the measure through which governments, education authorities, schools, teachers and parents can determine whether or not young Australians have the literacy and numeracy skills and knowledge that provide the critical foundation for other learning and for their productive and rewarding participation in the community. The tests provide parents and schools with an understanding of how individual students are performing at the time of the tests. They also provide schools, states and territories with information about how education programs are working and which areas need to be prioritized for improvement. NAPLAN tests are one aspect of each school‟s assessment and reporting process, and do not replace the extensive, ongoing assessments made by teachers about each student‟s performance. FROM THE ACTING DEPUTY PRINCIPAL SECONDARY – Kate Fleay This term Mr Mark Marsh and I have the pleasure of working together in the Deputy Principal Role at KDHS. Mr Marsh will be undertaking the role on Monday and Tuesday and I will be in the chair Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. I am very excited about the direction the school is moving in and am looking forward to being a part of such positive innovations. As usual the term is full of activities and events and the Secondary students will be participating in many activities, such as the ANZAC Day commemoration, the Bendigo Bank Netball Carnival being held in Katanning next Friday and the Cross Country Thursday 22

nd May.

In Term 2 there will be weekly focuses on positive behaviour within the school. With so many students choosing to behave in a commendable manner it is only fair that they are acknowledged for their ability to lead others by example. In conjunction with this initiative I will be incorporating some extracts from Wilson McCaskill‟s book, Children Aren‟t Made of China, by looking at ways parents can assist teachers in the raising of their children. In the words of Hillary Clinton (and many others) „It takes a village‟ to raise a child. Therefore, there are four „I‟s that will be the topics of the following newsletter articles: Interest, Invest, Identify and Inspire. Interest: „We must show and action our deep interest in children. It is important to be observant of them and notice their successes, failures, strengths, weaknesses, problems, concerns and improvements. Being interested in them helps them be interested in themselves. Often the hardest thing is to listen. To listen to more than the things they say, but to the things they don‟t say, won‟t say, or can‟t say. Make your children your subject of greatest interest. Be informed about them through all the different stages of their lives.‟McCaskill, W, The Game Factory Pty Ltd, 2001. Thank you everyone who has made me feel welcome. I look forward to meeting parents at the parent teacher interviews next Thursday 8

th May. Here‟s to a fantastic term.

ADIDAS SCHOOL FUN RUN – NOTE CHANGE OF DATE We will be holding an Adidas School Fun-Run as a major fundraising event this year. The event will be held on Thursday 22

nd May within the school and farm grounds.

The Adidas School Fun-Run is a healthy, fun and active fundraiser that ensures we send the right message to our students about getting active, having fun and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The main focus of this event is on participation. Family support is most appreciated as we encourage all students to get involved.

All students have received a Sponsorship Form to help collect sponsorship on behalf of the school. The funds raised will be used to purchase: sporting equipment for the school.

We ask all parents to read the Sponsorship Form and sign the front page to grant permission for their child to fundraise and participate in this event. Students who raise just $10.00 or more will receive a reward for effort. In the Sponsorship Form you will also find many other benefits like the chance to win a family holiday to Disneyland!

Finally, we would like to welcome parents and family members to attend the Adidas School Fun-Run event day at the school on Thursday 22

nd May to help cheer on the students.

Thank you, good luck and happy fundraising! Derek Ringrose

LIBRARY NEWS The pick of the week for Lower/Middle Primary: THE HIGHWAY RAT By Julia Donaldson & Axel Scheffler. “Give me your pastries and puddings! Give me your chocolate and cake! For I am the Rat of the Highway, and whatever I want I take,” Beware of the Highway Rat. He‟ll steal your food …and your heart!

The pick of the week for Middle to Upper Primary: THE YEAR MY LIFE BROKE By John Marsden. You move into the most boring street in the most boring town in Australia. Tarrawagga is a hole. Its only ambition is to be a crater, and it has every chance of getting there. The last thing you expect is to have action all around you, dangerous strangers in the backyard, and bullets flying past your ears. At your new school, everyone thinks you‟re the biggest loser in Grade 6. Little do they know. When they realise the truth, teachers and students alike are in for the shock of their lives.

YEAR 7 CAMP

On Tuesday 4

th March, the Year 7 class drove to Dwellingup Adventure Retreat for our Year 7 camp. We separated into

three cars and drove for two and a half hours to get to Dwellingup at 10.35am. Throughout the three days the activities we did were; mountain bike riding, ambush, rock climbing, flying fox, canoeing, abseiling, team games and raft building, although instead of raft building we just went for a swim in the Murray River, which was fun. The instructors were Matt (who was really crazy) for mountain bike riding, ambush and canoeing; Tyler and Scott for rock climbing, flying fox and abseiling, Scott also helped with team games; Helen for when we went swimming. The girls slept in a cabin called “The Cubby House” and the boys slept in the chalet. Every night we had an activity and we played on the trampolines. For dinner each night one group had to set up a restaurant. We had a great time on camp and a massive thank you to Miss McIvor, Mr Ringrose and Mr Campbell because without them the camp would not have been possible. Daisy Elliott
