Our 50th Anniversary Celebration Agility, Jumping and Games Trial attracted 928 entries from all over the State. That may be the biggest entry ever for a club-run trial in Victoria.

Anita Zuccon with ‘Hazel’

The weather was near perfect. This was in contrast to last year’s trial when a storm deluged us and gale force winds forced abandonment half way through the day.

Lisa Neil with ‘Dusty’

This year we included agility games in the programme and accordingly added a ring dedicated to games. The games ring coped well, but the big increase in entries for other events extended the time taken by the other rings. This meant a late finish to the presentation sessions at the end of the day.

Our very capable Trial Co-ordinator Martha Schnider deserves special thanks. Martha spent many weeks organising all our stewards and lead runners, and also arranging the “showbag” prizes for First Place winners. The bags contained lots of useful dog goodies and delighted winners. Very special thanks must go to our sponsor, Discount Animal Supplies in Lysterfield, who donated all the contents of the bags. Please, please be one of their customers and thank them for their sponsorship. Thanks also to Alois Schnider who put in much work arranging the hire of additional agility equipment from multiple sources.

Meryl Birchall with ‘Raulf’

Special thanks goes to our dedicated crew in the kitchen, headed up by Margaretha Hovens. The lunch provided for judges and officials was, as always, outstanding. And the goodies through the hatch were lovely.

Kim Morrison with ‘Biscuit’

AGILITY, JUMPERS & GAMES TRIAL   by Normon Morcom

Knox Obedience Dog Club Serving the Community for 50 years Page 3

It was great to have so many KODC helpers on the day who do not participate in agility. This freed our agiliteers to compete in the events.

Heather Donaldson with ‘Delta’ Our helpers were too numerous to name them all, but I’d like to particularly acknowledge prodigal son Kane Wheeler who took on, and excelled at, the critical task of entering results into the database and printing the pass cards. Our system had to track results in 102 separate event categories on the day.

Margaret Keil with ‘Lucille’ 20 KODC members entered 25 dogs spread over almost every event. This is a vast increase on previous years.

Nick Kirchner with ‘Maimie’

Congratulations go to the winners of our major awards for KODC members. The successful teams (handler and dog) feature on the front page of this edition of Pawprint.

Our main trophy, for the KODC-trained dog most successful on the day, went to Denise Basile with her sheltie ‘Bella’.

The sash for the fastest dog in an agility event went to Norm Morcom with miniature poodle ‘Pearl’.

And the sash for the fastest dog in a jumping event went to Alois Schnider with his border

collie ‘Chloe’.

Unless crated, Dogs are not to be: - left unattended, - tied to a car, - tied to any Clubhouse structure, - left in the Clubhouse, or - left in the care of children under 10 years old.

Instructors may secure their dogs as they deem appropriate while instructing.

Dogs are allowed in the Clubhouse, excluding areas set aside for the preparation or serving of food, except on such days as Committee considers inappropriate. No dogs are to be left in the Office, except those belonging to the Club members working there. Dog droppings to be cleaned up immediately. Handlers must be a financial member of the club to attend training and use of the club facilities. All members must wear their current membership card while attending training. Any dog showing visible signs of any disease or injury will be asked to leave the training ground and to seek veterinary advice. A dog that has bitten, or in the opinion of the training panel shows an extreme tendency of unprovoked aggression towards people, must be muzzled. Members have the right of appeal against muzzling if it can be proved, beyond doubt, that the dog was provoked. Removal of a muzzle will be decided by the committee, at the recommendation of the Training Panel.

YELLOW BANDANAS The Knox Obedience Dog Club has available Yellow Bandanas to identify dogs that may need a bit of space around them. The reason for needing one could be: • Nervousness • Recovery from an operation (i.e.: convalescing) • Unsociable to people or other dogs When approaching a yellow bandana dog please make sure your dog doesn’t go running up to it freely, just as the handler of the yellow bandana dog should be mindful of the space around their dog at all times. If you feel your dog needs to be given their own space, then go to the office and obtain a bandana. Please return them when you have finished, so that other dogs can have their turn.

AVOID DOGS TIED UP AND IN CRATES You may have noticed that some members and instructors who use the Competition Obedience and Agility rings leave their dogs unattended, either in a crate or tied up, while they are working or helping other members. Also, some instructors tie their dogs up to the goal posts whilst they are teaching a class. PLEASE AVOID LETTING YOUR DOG APPROACH ANY DOG THAT IS LEFT UNATTENDED.
