All Saints’ Sunday
I praise the Saints who have graced us: the Great Saints, Francis and Teresa and the gang;
but especially the Lesser Saints, those who have humbly, perhaps unknowingly,
shed light in our lives. I am grateful for the people
who have blessed you—yes, you, dear reader, who have loved you more than necessary,
who have taught you and forgiven you and shown you what love is possible.
I give thanks for those who endured silently
and those who showed you how to rise up and shout. I bless those who didn't yell at you,
and showed you a new path. I thank God for the saints whose brokenness,
whose imperfections, faults and failures showed you what a glorious light can shine
in a cracked lantern. For all who have helped you know your belovedness
I give thanks, because now you, dear one, are sanctified, too: chosen as Love's vessel,
no more deserving or adequate or worthy than others, but loved, and chosen as Love's vessel.
May you know with certainty that you can't know who you have blessed, but that, like all Saints,
you have.

ORDER FOR THE WORSHIP OF GOD
November 7, 2021 9:30 a.m.
PRELUDE Adagio for Strings Samuel Barber
WELCOME (Please sign and pass the Friendship Pad in your pew.)
INTROIT There Is A Happy Land arr. Tim Osiek
There is a happy land, far, far away, where saints in glory stand, bright, bright as day. O, how they sweetly sing: worthy is our Savior King! Loud let his praises ring, forevermore. In that happy land all the saints together stand, and in glory shine! A happy land, happy land.
CALL TO WORSHIP: (from Revelation 7 and Hebrews 12)
Leader: After this, I looked, and there was a great multitude that
no one could count, from every nation, standing before
the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white. They
cried out in a loud voice, saying:
People: Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the
throne, and to the Lamb!
Leader: Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of
witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and the sin
that clings so closely,
People: And let us run with perseverance the race that is set
before us. Let us worship the Lord our God!
HYMN #366 Love Divine, All Loves Excelling (please stand if able)
UNISON PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Gracious God, You see us as we are, and know our inmost
thoughts. We confess we often take life for granted. We forget
that all life comes from You and that to You all life returns. We
have not always lived as Your grateful people, nor loved as
Christ loved us. Forgive us Lord. Remind us that Your grace
alone sustains us, and restore us to the joy of Your salvation, now
and forever, through Jesus Christ our Lord...…..(time for silent
prayers of confession.)
ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Pastor: Friends, believe the good news of the gospel.
People: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.
GLORIA PATRI (please stand if able)
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost. As
it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be. World without
end. Amen, Amen.
THOUGHT FOR CHILDREN
CONGREGATIONAL GREETING – “The Peace of Christ”
LITANY FOR THE SAINTS AND THE LORD'S PRAYER
Leader: Eternal God, we rejoice to know of all who, through the
ages, have placed their trust in You: Apostles, prophets, saints,
and martyrs, and all humble believers whose names are long
forgotten. Give us assurance we belong to that great company.
People: We give You thanks, O God, for all those who have
fought the good fight, finished their race, and kept the faith.
We are grateful for the crowd of saints who by their example,
have followed Jesus and witnessed to His resurrection.
Leader: We name before You, O God, those this congregation has
returned to You and the Church Triumphant in the last year:
Lorraine Gilbert; Lucille Ralston; Skip Taylor; Marian Stevenson;
Sally Sami; Phil Hoffman; Margaret Rice; Roger Atkins; Jean Weller;
Richard Willoughby; William MacDonald; Mel Reitnour; Bill Hocker;
Virginia Spellman; Louisa Young; Skip Guthrie; Fred Finkey; Cynthia
Forrest; Margaret Bovard; Robin Turner; Frank McCorkle; Craig Scott;
Barbara Magness; Jeanne Hillenbrand; Trudy Rossiter; Rick Mainwaring;
Alice Humphrey; Barbara Hansen; Martha Liotta; Connie Fleming;
Lois Braun; Elmer Thompson; Leonard Starkey
Leader: We thank You for their witness and faith. (silent prayer)
We pray for all who have lost family members in the last year, and
in remembering those dear to us at rest with You, we pray You
would grant us grace to follow them in faithfulness.
People: Hear us, God, as we speak silently or aloud, the names of
those returned to You, already known and held by Your eternal
love.......(please feel free to speak names aloud)
…..then singing quietly:
Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee.
Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty!
God in three persons, blessed Trinity!
Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore thee
Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;
Cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee,
Who wert and art, and evermore shalt be.
Leader: Hear us Lord as You taught all the saints, saying...
People: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in
heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our
debts, as we forgive our debtors, and lead us not into
temptation, but deliver us from evil, for Thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory forever, AMEN.
OFFERTORY Sing Me To Heaven Gawthrop
In my heart’s sequestered chambers lie truths stripped of poet’s
gloss. Words alone are vain and vacant and my heart is mute. In
response to aching silence memory summons half-heard voices, and
my soul finds primal eloquence and wraps me in song.
If you would comfort me, sing me a lullaby. If you would win
my heart, sing me a love song. If you would mourn me and bring
me to God, sing me a requiem, sing me to heaven.
Touch in me grief and comfort, love and passion, pain and
pleasure. Sing me a lullaby, a love song, a requiem. Love me,
comfort me, bring me to God. Sing me a love song, sing me to heaven.
DOXOLOGY (please stand if able)
Praise God from whom all blessings flow. Praise Him all
creatures here below. Praise Him above ye heavenly hosts.
Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen.
UNISON PRAYER OF DEDICATION (from Feasting on the Word)
Holy One, all that we have comes from You. You bless our lives
with the companionship of Your people, the freedom that comes
from forgiveness of sin, the joy of thanksgiving for earth and all
its bounty. Turn us toward those in need, and use these gifts to
serve them, in Jesus’ name we pray. Amen. (please be seated)
SCRIPTURE LESSON Revelation 7: 9-17 (Page 999)
Hebrews 12: 1-2 (Page 978)
Revelation 7: 9-17
After this I looked, and there was a great multitude that no one
could count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and
languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed
in white, with palm branches in their hands. They cried out in a
loud voice, saying, “Salvation belongs to our God who is seated
on the throne, and to the Lamb!” And all the angels stood around
the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and
they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God,
singing, “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and
thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God
forever and ever! Amen.”
Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, “Who are these,
robed in white, and where have they come from?” I said to him,
“Sir, you are the one that knows.” Then he said to me, “These are
they who have come out of the great ordeal; they have washed
their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. For
this reason they are before the throne of God, and worship him day
and night within his temple, and the one who is seated on the
throne will shelter them. They will hunger no more, and thirst no
more; the sun will not strike them, nor any scorching heat; for the
Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will
guide them to springs of the water of life, and God will wipe away
every tear from their eyes.”
Hebrews 12: 1-2
Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of
witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings
so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set
before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith,
who for the sake of the joy that was set before him endured the
cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right
hand of the throne of God.
Pastor: The Word of the Lord.
People: Thanks be to God.
MEDITATION “For All the Saints” Don Lincoln
HEIDELBERG CATECHISM (Q & A #1) (please stand if able)
Leader: What is your only comfort in life and in death?
All: That I am not my own, but belong—body and soul, in life
and in death—to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ.
He has fully paid for all my sins with His precious blood,
and has set me free from the tyranny of the devil. He also
watches over me in such a way that not a hair can fall from
my head without the will of my Father in heaven; in fact, all
things must work together for my salvation.
Because I belong to Him, Christ, by his Holy Spirit, assures
me of eternal life and makes me wholeheartedly willing and
ready from now on to live for Him. AMEN.

NOVEMBER JOURNEY CLASS
“Inspired Word” Critical Issues in Understanding, Interpreting and Applying
the Biblical Word to Life
A four-week series led by Dr. Manfred Brauch 10:45AM hybrid in Spellman Jr. and via Zoom
November 7, 14, 21, 28
In our Presbyterian liturgical/worship tradition, the reading of a biblical text is
usually followed by the reader’s declaration: “The Word of the Lord”, to which the
congregation responds with the declaration: “Thanks be to God”. It is the purpose
of this 4-Sunday series to address this question: “How do we understand the
declaration that every biblical text read in worship is “the Word of the Lord”
for which we give thanks to God? Are all texts (or entire books) in the Bible to
be understood as equally inspired and therefore authoritative
for Christian life and faith? What does our praxis – how we
apply Biblical texts/teachings/imperatives to our living –
reveal about what we mean when we declare that the Bible is
“Word of the Lord”?
Dr. Brauch taught New Testament Interpretation for 8 years
at Northern Baptist Theological Seminary (Overbrook, Ill). Over 26 years at
Eastern Baptist/Palmer Theological Seminary (St. Davids, PA) he held the
positions of Academic Dean, Professor of Biblical Theology, and President. His
essays are published in several books and academic Christian journals. He is the
author of several books. During retirement, Manfred, together with his wife,
Marjean (a family physician, who was born to eternal life in 2014), has been
engaged in both long and short-term volunteer work in medical mission and
theological/biblical education in Thailand, Chile, Russia, New Zealand,
Honduras, and Cameroon, West Africa, as well as in adult faith
formation/education programs in local churches. The Brauchs have three
children and four grandchildren.
November 7 Introduction
Reflections on the Nature of Scripture
November 14

2. The Practice of Reading and Applying Biblical
Texts ‘Selectively’
November 21
1. “Lost in Translation”
2. Heeding Literary and Theological Contexts of
Particular Texts
November 28
1. Are all parts of Scripture on the same level of inspiration
or authoritativeness?
2. How Do We Distinguish between that in the bible which
is culturally and historically relative (therefore limited to
the time and place of writing) and that which is
transcultural and trans-historical (therefore the
authoritative Word of God for all Christians at all
times in all cultures)?
KEEP OUR NEIGHBORS WARM
We are collecting warm coats and blankets/sleeping bags in the month of November. The West Chester Food Cupboard has been supplying food to 350 families in the West Grove area. A need that has been expressed by many is for blankets/sleeping bags for the winter (in fact several kids have said that’s what they most wanted for Christmas). We are also looking for men’s, women’s and children’s warm winter coats/jackets in all sizes. Please keep in mind we CANNOT accept long men’s and women’s dress coats. In the past we have collected close to 400 coats so let’s try to keep that goal in mind. All coats are going to local organizations including WCU Resource Pantry (18-22 year olds), Broad Street Ministry, Tick-Tock Early Learning Center and the St. Agnes Day Room. Kohls and Walmart are good options for purchasing new outerwear for a reasonable price. Racks will be set up in the sanctuary and coats can be dropped off anytime during the week or on Sunday. Blankets and sleeping bags can be dropped off in designated bins throughout the church. You can order donations on line and have them delivered directly to Westminster. Questions? Contact Laureen Smith at [email protected].

We try to give opportunity to first timers but it’s always nice to have more names than we need. Tuesday Morning Fellowship Group, November 9 at 9:30am in Spellman Hall. John Hurt, the resident historian for Tuesday Morning Fellowship, will give us his insights into another fascinating topic on Tuesday, Nov. 9 at 10:00 a.m.: The Berlin Airlift, 1948-49. Just three years after the end of World War II, the Soviet Union tried to drive the Western Allies out of their sectors of occupied Berlin by closing down all rail and road access to their portion of the city. This meant that West Berlin would be denied access to food and fuel and that the population would be threatened with starvation, probably leading to a general revolt (against the West). The U.S. and allies responded with an attempt to supply West Berlin by air, an attempt which seemed forlorn given the vast amount of goods that West Berlin required and the tricky flying weather in Central Europe. This was the first crisis of the Cold War. Come hear John describe how we won the battle of wills and logistics. Peace & Global Witness Offering thank you! We are very grateful to everyone who contributed to our annual Peace & Global Witness Offering. As a result of your generous donations, we collected over $6,000! Twenty-five percent of this amount will be donated to Rise Against Hunger to help fund our next meal packaging event. The remainder of the money will be used to support the work of peace and reconciliation in our region and across the globe. Thank you so much for your participation and generosity! Sock It To Us thank you! Thank you for your amazing generosity as 1,739 pairs of socks were collected this year! Very close to our goal of 1,800! The organizations that will receive these socks are so grateful as they all are in need of socks for those they serve.
This afternoon, November 7, at 4:00 p.m. tune in to hear member Brenda Schivito on station PHL17 as she is interviewed on the topic “What Every Family Needs to Know About Opioids.” Recycling: Help reduce landfill waste by bringing the following used items to WPC for recycling: 1) Alkaline Only Batteries (place tape over both ends) and 2) K-pods. Leave them in the bins provided under the front portico. We would appreciate knowing what percentage of the congregation has been vaccinated. If you are willing to share your status, please call the church office at 610-399-3377, and they will be happy to update your profile.
