SO HERE’STHE LOW DOWN

Know How is a six month programme culminating in a Build weekend where your digital ideas are brought to life with the possibility to pitch for grants from the Know How Fund.

We’re taking a cohort of 20 organisations through the first six months with eight in each round making the final cut for the Build. We’ll help you build your concept, test it with your organisation and customers before bringing together a team that can deliver the work.

By being a part of the Build, you are automatically entered to pitch at the People’s Panel to access grants of up to £5000 to take your idea to the next level.

In addition to Know How grants, we have other opportunities to support your organisation with design and digital expertise to move your project forward.

We can also help connect you with new knowledge and talent, through Know How funded graduate placements and post-graduate researchers from some of the region’s top universities.

Throughout the process, we will actively seek out expertise and help you broker partnerships to support your organisation to build your project.

At various stages of the programme we will invite the general public to join in sessions, so if you’re not an organisation that fits the bill but still want to be involved there is plenty of opportunity for this.

We have designed the application process to get you thinking about the opportunities that exist in your organisation right from the start.

It involves completing a slide deck of questions to apply for the Know How programme by the deadline.

For those organisations that are successful, this slide deck will act as an introduction to your organisation during the Think module.

Once you have sent us your slide deck, the Know How team will review the applications and respond to all applicants.

Applications to be part of the Know How programme open in June 2014 and December 2014.

The slide deck should take you no longer than 2–3 hours to complete.

As a participant this is focused time to go away and engage your organisation with the insights you’ve discovered through the Know How programme.

Know How provides you with tools to test your ideas and directions with stakeholders in your organisation, alongside potential audiences and future customers.

The Know How tools and activities will be available for free on nearnow.org.uk so even if you weren’t selected for the programme you can still explore and use these tools to drive design and digital thinking within your organisation.

This period is down to you and your commitment to take forward the ideas you have been developing in the Know How Programme.

By this stage you should be ready to test your idea with potential customers and audiences.

During this time we will provide you with the know how to test your prototype, get early feedback from stakeholders and find the right mix of people to continue to build your idea.

In order to go into the Build, you need to work with your organisation to create a team who have the right mix of skills to deliver your ambitions.

Your application for the Build might include a focus on how you can enhance your business model either by increasing or creating new revenue, reducing overheads by making your organisation’s processes more efficient or delighting your customers with new experiences.

As a minimum we think a team should include a developer, a designer, a university partnership and your organisation. We’re not pinned down on this but a balance of skills and networks makes an ideal collaboration to take ideas forward.

In the Build we focus on getting hands on and practical, working towards building your concept over three days. You bring your full team and we will provide the space and a format for the development of your project.

By the last day you should have your first working prototype to trial and test at scale and get instant feedback to inform your next steps.

At the end of this event there is a live pitch with your team to a People’s Panel with the opportunity to access grants of up to £5000 from the Know How Fund or further support to move your project forward.

For organisations who don’t make the Build, we have two wildcard slots available selected by the public through an open vote. This means that even if you don’t go through the Build process you still have a chance to pitch your project to access the Know How Fund.

This is about taking your project out into the open and launching it.

By this stage, even if you don’t take part in the Build and pitches, the tools and training you have had in placing design and digital thinking at the heart of your organisation will have had an impact and some of your ideas should be implemented into your future strategies.

For those who don’t access grant funding we will support you with other routes to market for sustaining and scaling your idea.
