KNOCKING CHARACTERISTICS OF
PURE HYDROCARBONS
Foreword
This publication is being issued to makegenerally available the d a t a on the knockingcharacteristics of pure hydrocarbons that havebeen developed under the American PetroleumInstitute ResearchProject 45. While this infor-mation was developed primarily for the APIProject, the usefulness of the data would be ex-panded by its broader distribution. To this end,the ASTM Committee D-2 on Petroleum Prod-ucts and Lubricants was selected as the agencybest suited to sponsor this distribution, as it islargely composed of engine manufacturers, petroleum refiners, and consumers.
The project has been a very extensive under-taking and has entailed a considerable amount ofresearch work carried out at the Ohio StateUniversity in the preparation of the hydrocar-bons and at several r e s e a r c h organizationsequipped with engines to measure the knockingcharacteristics of the hydrocarbons. The gen-eral supervision of the project was under Prof.C. E. Boord of the Ohio State University.
The objective of the project was to obtainsamples of a wide variety of pure hydrocarbonsand to relate their s t r u c t u r e s and physicalcharacteristics w i t h t he i r respective knocklimitations in engines. A v a r i e t y of enginetypes and operation procedures were selectedfor this investigation because of the importanteffect of these variables on knock ratings of the
hydrocarbons. The data were made availablecurrently in annual reports distributed throughthe API. In preparing the present publication, these data have all been checked against originalsources, in order to present them as free fromerror as possible.
The data are presented in three sections ac-cording to the test method employed:
I. The ASTM Research and Motor MethodsH. The Critical Compression Ratio Method
m. The 17.6 Supercharged Method
A history of the API Project and a discussionof the significance of the data appear elsewherein this publication. A special Editorial Com-mittee composed of representatives from APIProject 45 and ASTM Committee D-2 preparedthis publication. Copies may be obtained fromthe American -Society for Testing Materials,1916 Race St., Philadelphia 3, Pa.
