Pieta Comes to St. Patrick’s An Invitation Markham Santa Parade
In the summer of 2010, a Markham sculptor, Dominic Aguila, donated two statues to St. Patrick's Church. they were the Pieta and Padre Pio.
The Knights were asked to receive and set up the statues.
Four strong and sturdy Knights, being Tibor Hary, Richard Schneider, Arnold Kozik and Pat Redmond went to Dominic's house and picked up the statues.
A few days after bringing them to the church, a team comprising Tim Flynn, Richard Schneider, Arnold Kozik, Tibor Hary and Pat Redmond, built a stand for the Pieta statue. Then four volunteers, comprising Tim Flynn, Sean Flyn, Richard Schneider and Pat Redmond, placed the statue on the stand. Tibor Hary has reinforced the statues with bolts to ensure their stability. Today the Pieta statue has its wooden form surrounding it. This will be removed after the cement has stabilized.
A stone memorial has been commissioned for the statue. When completed, it will be added beside the Pieta, commemorating it to a pro-life theme, as the statue in the front of the Church did earlier. Fr. Ed kindly selected the phrase to be used on the memorial. Attached are two pictures of the sculptor,
Dominic, and his son and daughter-in-law. The parishioner who contacted Fr. Ed re the donation stands with the family beside the statue of Padre Pio.

Dear Brothers,
We are presented with an opportunity to
treat ourselves to a weekend spiritual
retreat, in the Ignation tradition (desiring,
seeking and finding God in the reality of
our daily lives), at the Manresa Jesuit
Spiritual Renewal Centre in Pickering,
Ontario. The theme of the retreat is “MY
CHRISTIAN FAITH:COMING TO MATURITY”
and our leader will be Fr. Keith Langstaff,
S.J.
You arrive on Friday evening between
7:00pm and 8:00 pm. Silence begins and
lasts until retreat closing on Sunday with
lunch at 12:30pm.
Car pooling will be provided for those who
wish to share a ride.
Retreatants are invited to consider that the
basic cost to Manresa for a weekend is
$165 (meals and accommodation). If you
cannot afford this offering, you can offer
whatever you can afford. Those who can
are invited to make a larger donation which
will help those who are unable to meet the
basic cost. Money should never keep
anyone away from a retreat!
As a start, Brothers Vern Chaves and Jim
Sweeney have stepped forward as our first
candidates.
This event is being coordinated by Bro. Tim
Flynn. You are invited to give this matter
your due consideration and give Tim a call
(905-642-5250) or sending him an email
([email protected]) as soon as
possible and in any event, no later than
January 15th
, 2011.
Your offering may be enclosed in a sealed
envelope which will be delivered to the
Manresa Jesuit Spiritual Renewal Centre to
assure your privacy. A receipt for tax
purposes will be issued.

The Knights, in co-operation with
York South Right to Life, donated a foetal model set to Fr. McGivney High School, in November 2010. The foetal model set consisted of four models of an unborn child, aged 1 month, 3 months, 5 months and 7 months. These four all represent critical stages of the development of
a child. School staff and students were very pleased to receive the models. The Vice Principal, Rod Simmons, the Chaplaincy Team Leader, Christine Gomes, the Dean of the Science Department, Joe Alphonso, and members of the School Right to Life
Society, all attended the presentation. The display was placed in the main corridor of the school, behind a glass wall, to allow all students to view it.
Everyone agreed that having this set would provide a strong reality check for all students on the implications and responsibilities of pregnancy and would reduce the number of abortions that occur. The students plan to make the models the
centrepiece of the annual Right to life week at the school. This is the second set the Knights have donated. The first went to Brother Andre High School. It was donated in 2009.The money for both sets came from Rose Sunday sale of rose lapels.
The Knights pro-life team has now started promoting the sale of the models to all councils of the Knights of Columbus in Ontario. We will do a mailing and encourage councils to buy, then donate, foetal model sets to their high schools to promote the
culture of life in Ontario. The council will be assisting this initiative financially, through a donation of $500 in the budget. This will cover the costs of mailing to the councils in Ontario.

Council 7689 hosted the annual Basketball Free Throw Championships for boys and girls ages 9 -14.
Twenty knights from the St Patrick Council helped out during the two night competition on consecutive Thursdays, January 27th and February 3rd. This competition is based on over twenty local elementary Catholic and
Public schools sending their winners in each age category to Br. Andre Catholic High School to compete for the council championship on the first evening and then the winners returning for the district championship on the second Thursday evening.
The winners of the District championship will then proceed to a final round in a GTA Final held in Oshawa in March. Brian Armstrong Youth Team Captain
