NEW PHOTOS OF BROTHER KNIGHTS - We now have 57 photos out of our total membership of 85. Our goal is to have a portrait photo of every one of our council members. We are getting there! These are photos of Brother Knights of Council #13969 that have never appeared in the newsletter before.

COUNCIL/MEMBERSHIP/COMMUNITY – National Convention in Philadelphia, Aug 4-6 The theme of the National Convention was “Endowed by the Creator with Life and Liberty”. Emphasis was placed on Growth of the Order in service, financial protection, and membership. Our New Mexico Delegation included State Deputy Richard Espinosa, his wife Janice, and a number of other Brothers and Ladies. Sir Knight Gilbert Perez and his wife Lady Mary Lou Perez, from our Council 13969, were invited to attend. The National Convention business was conducted, and there was time to network with representatives from other jurisdictions to better serve our mission. New Mexico was awarded one of the “Circle of Honor” awards for states that achieve 100% or more of their membership and star council quotas. New Mexico achieved 130% of its goal, the 4th highest of all! Our St. Genevieve Council #13969 barely missed achieving our membership goal last year; but we are working even harder to achieve Star Council this year. .

FAMILY/CHURCH/CULTURE OF LIFE – Family Unity Night We had our monthly Family Unity Night on the 3rd Wednesday of the month, August 19th. Our new Family Service Director Ray Narvaez, and his wonderful Grandmother Delia Narvaez, were the hosts. There were special family-themed door prizes. Delia introduced a game for the ladies where they were first blindfolded, and then scooped cotton balls into a bowl. The ever-nimble Moureen Ponzini won the competition with a total of 21 balls…there were also a number of 20’s. Brother Ray had a game for the men where they guessed the number of M&Ms in a jar. This game was won by the ever-astute Lucio Tellez. Grand Knight Jesus Frietze presented awards for Knight, Lady, and Family of the month. The usual potluck dinner was delicious. Many St. Genevieve families enjoy the diversion of breaking bread monthly with their friends. All Brothers and their families are encouraged to attend next month…and every month.

MEMBERSHIP/COUNCIL/CHURCH – First Degree Exemplification We held our monthly Initiation Ceremony on the 3rd Tuesday of the month, August 18th. Our St. Genevieve’s First Degree Team helped to bring four new Knights into the Brotherhood. As usual, our loyal Insurance Agent, Bro Matt Seltzer, was present to assist in the ceremony, and greet the new Knights with a message of our legacy from Fr. McGivney. Two of the candidates this month, Francisco Rios and Victor Apodaca, were from Las Cruces Council #1226. The remaining two candidates, Ruben Corona and Demetrio Lara, were from our own St. Genevieve’s Council #13969. New Brother Ruben and his wife are musicians who lead the singing at St. Genevieve Sunday Masses.

INSURANCE AGENT’S MESSAGE

Raising  Awareness  About  Life  Insurance

Each  September  since  2003  has  been  designated  as  Life  Insurance  Awareness  Month.  Like  most  awareness-‐raising  campaigns,  Life  Insurance  Awareness  Month  was  created  because  there  is  an  overwhelming  lack  of  understanding  of  life  insurance,  its  uses,  its  benefits,  and  its  variations  among  the  general  public.  Each  year,  the  Life  Insurance  Market  Research  Association  (LIMRA)  puts  out  the  results  from  surveys,  and  unfortunately,  the  numbers  they  report  continue  to  be  discouraging.

A  recent  survey  found  that  more  than  75  percent  of  people  polled  did  not  have  a  personal  financial  advisor,  even  though  68  percent  of  them  said  their  opinion  of  the  current  economic  conditions  was  somewhat  unfavorable  or  very  unfavorable.

In  other  words,  a  majority  of  those  surveyed  were  uncomfortable  with  the  economy  and  the  uncertainty  it  brings;  yet  they  did  not  seek  professional  assistance.  Maybe  they  spoke  with  their  friends  and  family.  Maybe  they  hoped  the  instability  would  go  away  by  itself.  Maybe  they  did  not  know  to  whom  to  turn.

If  you  fall  into  this  category,  please  remember  that  as  a  member  of  the  Knights  of  Columbus,  you  have  a  full-‐time,  professional  agent  you  can  call  your  own.  My  primary  responsibility  is  the  care  and  service  of  your  family’s  life  insurance,  retirement  and  long-‐term  care  needs.  I’ll  answer  your  questions  because  I  want  your  decisions  to  be  informed  ones.  I  want  to  help.

Another  LIMRA  statistic  said  43  percent  of  people  did  not  buy  life  insurance  because  they  worry  about  “making  the  wrong  decision.”  Talk  with  me,  your  agent,  and,  afterwards,  you’ll  understand  that  the  only  wrong  decision  was  not  purchasing  sooner  to  protect  your  family’s  future.

CHURCH/COUNCIL/LIFE – Silver Rose Journey through Las Cruces in November We recently received the following information from our State Deputy, Richard Espinosa: The Silver Rose will make its way through Southern New Mexico in November of this year. 2015 marks the 55th year of the program, which began in 1960. New Mexico will receive the Silver Rose on November 1, 2015 from the State of Colorado through Chama, and transfer the Silver Rose to the State of Texas through Anthony on November 22, 2015. It will be the responsibilities of the receiving District Deputy to pick the Silver Rose up from the preceding District. Districts 19 and 20 will need to coordinate with Colorado and Texas, respectively. Important dates for us are: November 17, transfer to District Deputy 15, Council 6597, Ruidoso November 19. transfer to District Deputy 13, Council 1226, Las Cruces November 20, transfer to District Deputy 20, Council 15578, Mesilla District Deputies: Now is the time to coordinate which council and/or parish will host the Silver Rose. Let's honor our Blessed Mother by encouraging maximum participation of Knights and Families on this special occasion. Last November, we were honored to have the Silver Rose come though St. Genevieve’s parish, and handed off to the Knights of Columbus in Anthony. Some of the photos from last year’s Silver Rose journey are shown below.

COUNCIL/MEMBERSHIP/CHURCH – Mega Bingo 2015 Our Mega Bingo is coming up on Saturday, October 3rd. Al Lopez, and his Bingo Crew (which is the entire Council) are busy handing out flyers, telling anyone who will listen about the big game, and selling tickets to family and friends. For the next three weeks, our main job is to sell the limit of 350 tickets for the game. Tickets are $55.00 and provide the player with cards for all the games. There are 13 games, and individual games have prizes from $600 to $1199. The total payout is $12,000. Details are on the back page of the flyer. This is our major fundraiser of the year, and all of the proceeds go to the local charities that we support. Please help by selling as many tickets as you can. If you need flyers or tickets, please contact Al Lopez (575-635-3808) or Bob Ponzini (715-291-5665) or any of the Brother Knights whose phone numbers and email addresses appear on the first page of this newsletter. In addition this year, we will be asked to help wash the pots and pans in the kitchen, work at the ticket booths, bus the outside tables, and clean up after closing both nights. In addition, many Brothers and their families are responsible for various food booths. You will all be contacted very soon, and asked to volunteer to help your Parish in its major fundraiser of the year.
