CANXNO MEETING!

Brother Knights, as I began writing these comments, I realized this is my last opportunity to address you as your Grand Knight. It has been an amazing journey and I want to thank everyone for their support, guidance and prayers these past two years. All our successes were due to God’s providence, the hard work of our Brother Knights and the support our parish community. I also want to thank my family. Their support and encouragement has been a blessing.

We will have the installation of officers during our regular meeting in July. I want to wish our new Grand Knight, Tom Yardley, and all the new officers a successful year. I know you will continue to support these men of service and the mission of the Knights of Columbus.

As July 4th is a special day for our country, “Love your Enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your heavenly Father, for he makes the sun rise on the bad and the good, and causes the rain to fall on the just and the unjust.” Mt 5:44-45 Jesus did not come just for the righteous, he came for everyone. He wants all to be in his kingdom. Today, our country is experiencing much division and even hatred. As Christians we are called to pray for those we love and even those we could call, our enemies. Let us together pray for our country and for healing. Let us pray for our city, state, and national leaders, that they may put their party affiliations aside and come together for constructive change. Let us especially pray for those who are trying to remove all our religious freedoms. If we are not praying for everyone despite our differences, are we truly doing God’s will?

God Bless America.

COUNCIL OFFICERS FOR FRATERNAL YEAR 2020 - 2021

GRAND KNIGHT: (Tom Yardley) The Grand Knight is responsible for the welfare of the council. He presides over council meetings; acts as an ex-officio member of all committees, appoints a membership and programming director, convenes officers for a monthly meeting, and ensures all necessary reports are submitted to the state and Supreme Council. He should also be aware of the council’s financial status and ensure that his signature appears on all checks drawn.

CHAPLAIN: (Fr. Piotr Koziel) The Chaplain is the spiritual advisor of the council. He is expected to make a report at council meetings on religious matters. The Grand Knight appoints a priest in accordance with any rules established by the bishop of the diocese to serve as council chaplain.

DEPUTY GRAND KNIGHT: (Kyle Nohavitza) The Deputy Grand Knight is second in command. He assists the Grand Knight with council affairs and fulfills all duties assigned to him by the Grand Knight. Should the Grand Knight be absent from a council meeting, the Deputy Grand Knight will preside. He performs this function by appointing, training and delegating members, attending special functions, communicating council goals and directing, monitoring, and evaluating council activities.

CHANCELLOR: (Beto Martinez) The Chancellor has a variety of responsibilities. Primarily, he assists the Grand Knight and the deputy grand knight in the execution of their duties and oversees the council in both their absences. He is charged with strengthening the members’ interests in council activities. The chancellor is chairman of the admission committee and a member of the Columbian Squires circle ceremonial team.

RECORDER: (Robert Lopez) The Recorder is similar to a court reporter or a secretary. He is responsible for maintaining a true record of all actions of the council and its correspondence.

FINANCIAL SECRETARY: (Alvin Saathoff) The Financial Secretary is appointed by the Supreme Knight, upon recommendation of the council. His main area of responsibilities is maintaining all financial and membership records. He collects and receives all moneys from all sources, including annual dues from council members. He also handles supply orders for the council officers and members, filing the Report of Officer (#185), and submitting all membership transactions to the Supreme Council.

TREASURER: (Brad Warner) The Treasurer is responsible for the safekeeping and maintaining records of all council funds and accounts. He is responsible for depositing money into the council’s accounts and provides a certificate of such monies to the Grand Knight. He is also responsible for payment of all expenses.

LECTURER: (TBD) The Lecturer is appointed by the Grand Knight to provide both educational and entertaining programs to the council. He is responsible for the ‘Good of the Order’ portion of council meetings. In order to provide members with informative and educational programs, he must be knowledgeable and aware of all council programming.

ADVOCATE: (Larry Luehring) The Advocate is the legal representative of the council and serves as the council’s attorney at trials and investigations of any interest to the council. While he does not need to be a member of the legal profession, he should be familiar with the council by-laws, the Order’s Charter, Constitution and Laws, Methods of Conducting a Council Meeting, and Robert’s Rules of Order.

WARDEN: (Greg Young) The Warden is the ‘watchdog’ for council property and degree paraphernalia, except the property of the financial secretary, treasurer and recorder. He is also responsible for setting up the council chambers for meetings and ceremonial work. During ceremonial exemplifications, he will appoint and supervise guards.

INSIDE GUARDS: (Gil Alvarez) OUTSIDE GUARD: (Vincent Giaglardi) The guards have similar responsibilities, but distinct differences. The Outside Guard tends to the outer door admitting visitors and members to the inner door. Once at the inner door, the Inside Guard checks to make sure that their membership cards are current.

TRUSTEES: (1st Year Ramiro Ochoa, 2nd Year Mario Solis and 3rd Year Al Arguijo) The Trustees consists of three members elected by the council and the Grand Knight, who serves as chairman of the board. They oversee the work of the Financial Secretary and Treasurer, and with the Deputy Grand Knight serve on the council’s retention committee. During council elections, only the three-year trustee is voted on, with the others moving on to become two-and one-year trustees, respectively.

Prayer to Mary Queen of the KnightsOur Lady, Queen of the Knights, bless all the activities of our order. Keep us true to the pledge to extend the kingship of thy Divine Son on earth. Through Thine intercession, win for us the grace ever to exemplify in our public and private lives, the virtues, which should characterize those specially dedicated to the service of the heavenly court. Make us always aware that as your Knights we are constantly observed, our faith judged and our order appreciated. Accept O Mary, this renewed pledge of fealty and devotion of thy servants, the Knights of Columbus. Amen.

Membership in the Knights of Columbus is open to men 18 years of age or older who are practical (that is, practicing) Catholics in union with the Holy See. A practical Catholic accepts the teaching authority of the Catholic Church on matters of faith and morals, aspires to live in accord with the precepts of the Catholic Church, and is in good standing in the Catholic Church.

Joining the Knights of Columbus can change your life. As a Knight, you have the opportunity to strengthen your parish, give back to your community, grow in your faith and gain exclusive access to our portfolio of top-quality insurance products to financially protect your family. Councils conduct many programs that support your parish and community. By joining your local council does

not mean that you need to sacrifice quality time with your family.

If you’re interested in helping those in need in your parish and community, strengthening your parish and your familial relationships, growing in your faith, and gaining exclusive access to top-quality insurance protection for you and your family, then consider joining the Knights of Columbus.

Page 6

Guidelines have been established to assist in judging the practical Catholicity of an applicant or member. The main components of this requirement may be described as follows:

A Catholic who is a member of a forbidden, masons or a secret society is not a practical Catholic and hence may not become or continue to be member of the Knights of Columbus.

The practical Catholic in union with the Holy See is one who, in general, regulates his life according to the teachings of Christ and the Church, and endeavors to observe the commandments of God and of the Church.

A practical Catholic strives to have a greater knowledge of the teachings of Christ and his Church's authority (vested in the Supreme Pontiff, the hierarchy and clearly united with him) to teach, govern and sanctify the faithful.

A practical Catholic gives material and moral support to the Church and her works on all levels, promoting the programs of the parish and diocese and comes to the aid of the missions, the needy, the underprivileged; espousing and advancing the just causes of minority groups; endeavoring to eliminate unjust discrimination, prejudice, etc.; supporting the Church in her defense of marriage and family life and in her crusades against divorce, abortion, pornography and all the evils of today.

If a practical Catholic marries outside the Church, that is, contrary to the laws of the Church, he ceases to be a practical Catholic and hence may not be a member of the Knights of Columbus. A man who, living in a valid marriage, obtains a civil divorce and remarries outside the Church ceases to be a practical Catholic and hence loses his right to join or continue in the Order of the Knights of Columbus. If his former marriage is declared null by the Church and he remarries validly according to the Church's laws, he may be reinstated into the Order.

A Catholic who is a member of a forbidden, masons or a secret society is not a practical Catholic and hence may not become or continue to be member of the Knights of Columbus.

CONGRATS to SK Ervey Martinez on his selection as Assistant Diocesan Deputy!
