KEY HIGHLIGHTS

OVERVIEW

The Leading Economic Indicators highlights trends in Consumer Price Indices (CPI) and inflation, interest rates,

exchange rates, international trade, agriculture, energy, manufacturing, building and construction, tourism and

transport.

MACROECONOMIC INDICATORS

Consumer Price Index (CPI) increased from 162.97 points in November 2015 to 164.72 points in December

2015. The overall rate of inflation went up from 7.32 per cent to 8.01 per cent during the same period. In

December 2015, the Kenyan Shilling appreciated against major currencies except the US Dollar, the Euro and

the Japanese Yen.

The average yield rate for the 91-day Treasury bills, which is a benchmark for the general trend of interest rates,

declined from 12.34 per cent in November 2015 to 9.69 per cent in December 2015. However, the inter-bank rate

declined to 5.31 in December 2015 from 8.85 per cent in November 2015.

The Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) 20 share index expanded from 4,016 points in November 2015 to 4,040

points in December 2015, while the total number of shares traded increased from 441 million to 474 million

shares during the same period. The total value of NSE shares traded expanded from KSh 13.15 billion in

November 2015 to KSh 15.11 billion in December 2015.

Broad money supply (M3), a key indicator for monetary policy formulation rose from KSh 2,567.66 billion in

October 2015 to KSh 2,593.32 billion in November 2015.

Gross Foreign Exchange Reserves increased from KSh 958.58 billion in November 2015 to KSh 999.00 billion in

December 2015. Net Foreign Exchange Reserves increased from KSh 448.00 billion in November 2015 to KSh

493.53 billion in December 2015.

A). AGRICULTURE

The quantity of coffee auctioned at the Nairobi Coffee Exchange rose by 1.1 per cent in the month of December

2015 to 1,282.4 MT. The average auction prices on the other hand went up by 29 per cent from KSh 337.27 per

kilogram recorded in the month of November to KSh 435.30 per kilogram in December 2015. The quantity of

processed tea fell from 41,343 MT in October 2015 to 40,382 MT in November 2015. The price of processed tea

decreased from KSh 333.37 to KSh 312.62 per kilogram over the same period.The amount of cane deliveries

decreased from 593.7 thousand tonnes in September 2015 to 535.4 thousand tonnes in October 2015.

Average price for dry maize rose from KSh 34.35 per kilogram in October 2015 to KSh 34.47 per kilogram in

November 2015. The average price per Kilogram for dry beans November 2015 was KSh 74.85. Milk deliveries to

formal processors increased from 53.9 million litres in October 2015 to 55.7 million litres in November 2015.

B). INTERNATIONAL TRADE

Quantity of coffee exported decreased from 4,399.9 MT in October 2015 to 2,769.3 MT in November 2015 while

its value fell from KSh 2,019.1 million to KSh 1,243.5 million over the same period. The quantity of tea exported

decreased to 36,714.2 MT in November 2015, while its value fell from KSh 13,538.3 million to KSh 12,126.0

million over the same period.

Volume of trade expanded from KSh 178.8 billion in October 2015 to KSh 211.6 billion in November 2015. The

total value of exports fell to KSh 48.71 billion. The value of imports increased from KSh 126.6 billion in October

2015 to KSh 162.9 billion in November 2015.

Domestic exports by Broad Economic Category (BEC) indicated that food and beverages was the main export

category in November 2015 accounting for 47.5 per cent of exports, while the value of non-food industrial

supplies and consumer goods not elsewhere specified registered 25.0 and 23.8 per cent shares, respectively.

BEC imports indicate that transport equipment was the main import category in November 2015 with a share of

36.3 per cent, while the values of industrial supplies; fuel and lubricants; and machinery & other capital

equipment and transport registered shares of 25.8, 11.3 and 12.2 per cent, respectively. Food and beverage

recorded a share of 5.9 per cent while consumer goods not elsewhere specified recorded a share of 7.5 per cent.

C). ENERGY

Total electricity generation rose to 797.30 million KWh in December 2015. On the other side, domestic

consumption of electricity dropped from 672.71 million KWh in November 2015 to 627.14 million KWh in

December 2015.

In the international market, the price of Murban crude oil declined from an average of US Dollars 43.55 per barrel

in November, 2015 to US Dollars 37.25 per barrel in December 2015.The national average domestic retail oil

prices of motor gasoline premium decreased from KSh 91.34 per litre in November, 2015 to KSh 90.94 per litre

retailed in December, 2015. The price of light diesel fell to retail at KSh 79.47 in December, 2015 from KSh 80.61

in November, 2015. The average price for Kerosene dropped to retail at KSh 54.23 in December 2015. Charcoal

prices rose from KSh 78.13 to KSh 78.42 during the period. The price of a 13-Kg cylinder of gas averaged KSh

2,369.46 in Deecember, 2015.

D). MANUFACTURING, BUILDING AND CONSTRUCTION

The quantity of cement produced decreased from 547,509 MT in October 2015 to 522,446 MT in November

2015. Consumption of cement dropped from 520,833 MT in October 2015 to 492,340 MT in November 2015.

Production of assembled vehicles decreased from 996 units in October 2015 to 820 units in November 2015.

E). TOURISM AND TRANSPORT

The total number of visitors arriving through Jomo Kenyatta (JKIA) and Moi International Airports (MIA)

decreased from 72,490 in October to 61,340 in November 2015. The number of passengers who landed at Jomo

Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) increased from 180,054 in October 2015 to 181,239 in November 2015,

while passengers who embarked expanded from 180,330 persons to 181,239 persons in the same period. The

total number of vehicles registered fell from 23,209 in November 2015 to 22,308 in December 2015. Motorcycles

accounted for about 52 per cent of total motor vehicles registered in December 2015.
