Assembling the KR JointNOTE: Assembly requires – one square extension
(included with BT and DV shanks), one torquewrench (not included), and one tightening fixture (not included). Before starting, makesure all mating surfaces are free from dirtand are perfectly clean.
a) Remove the differential connector (detail 3)from the taper shank (detail 2). Coat the differential connector threads with ASL-3Ganti-seize lubricant supplied with the tapershank. Screw the differential connector intothe rear thread of the boring head (detail 1)until it rests on the face between the twodifferential threads.
b) Screw front end of the taper shank (detail 2) onto the differential connector(detail 3) now located in the rear of the boring head (detail 1). Proceed carefullyuntil the locating pin (detail 4) begins totouch the taper shank face. Stop! Unscrew
the taper shank (detail 2) until the locating pin (detail 4) is aligned with the locating slot on the taper shank face.
c) Insert the square end of the socket extension (detail 5) through the tapershank (detail 2) and into the differentialconnector (detail 3). While maintainingalignment of locating pin (detail 4) and relative slot, turn the extension counter-clockwise until you see the twoRomicron faces approaching each other.Make sure the locating pin is going intothe slot on the taper shank.
d) Tighten the differential connector (detail3) to the required torque specification, asshown above, using a torque wrench(detail 6).
This will give you a taper/face contact connection.
The “KR” joint size is shown in the Kennametal catalog number located on theboring head or taper shank.*Old style was 3/8".

High-Performance Boring SystemsBasic procedures to be observed to attain ultra-high accuracy in fine boring with Romicron systems.Romicron boring systems can produce finish bores with tolerances of a few microns (1 micron = 0,001 mm) in diameter. Due to the unlim-ited factors that can influence finish-boring tolerances, Kennametalsuggests plus or minus two microns on the diameter. Typically,Romicron can achieve bore-to-bore variations of just a few tenths of a micron under ideal machining conditions.
Furthermore, finishing cuts for high-accuracy boring operationsrequire very small amounts of radial displacement (radius change) on the boring head cutting tool. Because of this requirement, each lineon the Romicron graduated dial corresponds, nominally, to one micron(0,001 mm) of radius change for the SVU and SVS models. The maxi-mum deviation from the desired bore diameter can be held within plusor minus two microns ±.000079 (± 0,002 mm), provided the followingconditions are strictly observed:
1. Romicron is an ultra-high-accuracy boring system. Please handle it with the same extreme care as is required for precision metrological instruments, observing high standards of cleanliness,handling, and operation.
2. Stock removal of the finishing cut should be regularly and evenlydistributed (concentrically), and stock removal kept within .010(0,25 mm), or smaller, on the side. The bore, before finishing,should be substantially parallel, within .002 (0,05 mm)... preferablyless, along the full bore depth (length).
3. Feed at .002 (0,05 mm) per revolution or, preferably, less.
4. The workpiece should be held securely to achieve accurate ultra-fine boring results. The tool tip radius should be properlychecked prior to boring.
5. The spindle and slide of the machine tool should be in good operating condition.
6. Maintain a controlled environment: temperature, humidity, and particles in suspension equal or equivalent to a fairly clean room(under 100,000 particles in suspension in air).
7. Machine tool to be used shall be either a fine borer, a jig borer, a high-precision machining center, or a jig center or equivalent.Taking a bore size of 1.57 (40 mm) diameter as reference, the tolerance of plus or minus two microns as specified above, ±.000079 (± 0,002 mm), is equivalent to ISO precision class IT 3.
8. When boring at speeds of approximately 4,000 rpm, or higher, balancing is usually necessary to maintain accuracy. However,when using speeds above 8,000 rpm, balancing becomes a must.The Romicron system will have to be properly balanced prior tostarting high-accuracy boring operations.
9. There are a number of other requirements for achieving optimumresults in high-accuracy boring, some of which are:
a. Good, solid clamping.
b. Thin-walled workpieces are prone to distortion under boring,clamping, and vibration. Such components require evaluation to determine if it is possible to clamp them properly.
c. Long bores, where length of bore exceeds 2.5 times diameter,require special care. In some cases, special shanks, specialshank shapes, and heavy metal shank materials will be required.
d. The use of extensions for extended-length boring will result inoverhangs, and will necessitate proper evaluation and analysis ofthese cutting conditions.
e. Good machining practices must be followed when utilizing diameter extenders.
f. Machinability of exotic materials should be examined to determine the best machining methods.
g. Machining of interrupted cuts can alter bore accuracy and configuration.
h. Coolant supply must be used to prevent thermal distortion.
i. Ultra-high-accuracy boring, starting from very rough bores suchas drilling out-of-round bores or uneven and tapered bores,requires planning prior to starting the operation. As a generalrule, one should try to plan ultra-precision boring in a sequenceof operations, as follows:
Start the boring operation by first achieving a class IT 11 tolerance.The second boring pass should aim at achieving a class IT 7 tolerance. The final boring pass should result in a class IT 4 tolerance. If proper care is taken and the environment is a clean room with temperature control, a class IT 3 tolerance can be attained in bores of 1.1811 (30 mm), and larger.
10. As stated earlier, Romicron is an ultra-high-accuracy boring system devoted to finish-boring production, but it also possessesa considerable ability to undertake fairly heavy cuts as well.Yet, be careful. To be safe, do not surpass a stock removal of .098 (2,5 mm) on the radius while roughing, and do notexceed .006 (0,15 mm) feed/revolution at maximum safe depth ofstock removal.
The above recommendations are offered as a general rule. They arevalid for most fine boring operations as they exist in most workshops.There are exceptions. Kennametal warrants, for a period of oneyear, that the Romicron boring head is freefrom defects in materials and workmanship,under normal use and service, when correctly installed, operated, and maintained.
Service of the Romicron boring head must be performed by the factory-trainedtechnicians at Kennametal’s Service andRepair Department to ensure proper performance of the product. Servicing of the Romicron boring head requires special tooling, technical knowledge, andreplacement parts available only throughKennametal. Any attempt to service the boring head by untrained personnel maycause severe damage.

With an exclusive micrometer adjusting dial, you can set final diameter on the machine in .001 increments. In this way, you can correct for errors on your machine with only one trial cut.
Dial Set blade sets are precisionground and fit to toolmaker tolerances for maximum rigidity.Indexable inserts minimize downtimefor tool changes. Blade sets acceptindustry standard 80° diamond inserts in both 0° and 15° lead angles.
Blade sets are interchangeable, within a given range, to help keep your tool inventories and costs low.

Assembly/Disassembly, Setting, and Adjustment Procedures
DisassemblyStep 1 Remove the drive key (B) from the cartridge
body (A).
Step 2 Remove the compression nut (E) using the specialwrench. Threads are standard, right-hand threads.
Step 3 Slide off the spring washer (D).
Step 4 Remove cartridge (A) from the graduated dialassembly (C) by rotating counterclockwise.
AssemblyStep 1 Clean all components.
Step 2 Reverse disassembly procedure.
Caution: Cartridge must thread into the dial freely. Cross-threading will permanentlydamage the nut.
Setting and Adjustment ProceduresStep 1 After reassembling the unit, tighten the compression
locknut until it stops. Then, loosen it approximately 1/10 of a turn. This will cause the spring washer to preload theunit with the correct pressure.
Step 2 Insert the unit into its bar or ring, and bolt it in place.
Step 3 Using the adjusting wrench, rotate the graduated dial.Movement should be “firm but free” in both directions. Youshould be able to feel the preloading effect of the springwasher, but there should be no drag or jerking feel whenrotating the dial.
Step 4 If movement is hard, remove the unit and loosen the compression nut. If movement is loose, remove the unitand tighten the compression nut. Repeat steps 2 and 3.
NOTE: Your unit should now be ready to use. If repeated attempts to achieve the proper movement fail, disassemble the unit and clean all components. Dirt or other foreign material may cause adjustment problems.
NOTE: Removal and replacement of the Tenthset cartridge will vary depending uponthe unit size and configuration. Cartridges that have a head diameter larger than thethreads (figure 2) require removal of the press fit key. The dial assembly then can bethreaded off the back of the cartridge. For cartridges that do not have a head largerthan the threads (figure 1), the dial assembly can be threaded off the cartridge over thehead. For these configurations, removal of the key is not required. All cartridge threadsare left hand.

Operating Instructions
Adjusting the Offset
1. Loosen lock screw.
2. Turn adjusting dial to the desired setting.Use the Vernier scale to adjust in tenths.All adjustments are made on the bore diameter.
3. Tighten lock screw.
Before assembling the system, be sure all parts are clean.
• Screw the Tenthset head onto the appropriate styleshank (hand tight fit).
Tighten the brass-tipped set screw to keep the headfrom loosening.
• Insert the boring bar into the slide and tighten theboring bar set screws.
Recommended torque is 33 in.-lbs.
Please note the “egg-shaped” hole is designed to lock theboring bar shank in the hole even if the shank is worn or
ground undersize. This simulated “V” block clamp is extremelyrigid for optimum boring results.
Each boring head is equipped with a lock screw for securingthe adjustment slide in place prior to boring. Read the following instructions carefully before adjusting head.
Important: To prevent damage to the internal lockingmechanism, the lock screw must be unlocked whileadjustments are made.

KC5410composition: A PVD TiB2 coating over a very deformation-resistant unalloyed substrate.application: Grade KC5410 is designed for roughing, semifinishing and finishing of free-machining(hypoeutectic <12.2% Si) aluminum, aluminum alloys, and magnesium alloys. The TiB2 coating is harder than TiN and TiAlN coatings and has an extremely smooth surface, resulting in reducedsurface friction, speedy chip flow, and outstanding wear resistance. In addition, built-up edge is prevented because this coating has a very low affinity for aluminum. The substrate is unalloyed and fine grained and offers sharp edges, smooth surfaces, and excellent thermal deformation resistance and edge integrity. Inserts with a ground periphery are polished before coating and havea sharp edge. Molded inserts have a light hone.

The cutting tool material contains a binder in addition to diamond particles. This makes grade KD100 suitable for roughing to finishing all types of highly abrasive workpieces, including non-ferrousmetals and non-metallics.
