Hello all,Even without daylight saving, I am sure the last month was shorter than normal. It is something that really hits you when meeting printing deadlines for a monthly mag. I’m positive I have been ripped of by at least a week. So what’s in this edition....? We have another story on Jimbo’s healthy organic breakfast. Jimbo is back after a stint in sick bay and he’s on fire with the new monster barbie. On this ocassion Jimbo also fed a stack of welcomed 5-6-7 Chevy Club members too. Then there is a blat on the last TAC check in which the coupe passed through for its first birthday check up. We also have a feature about a low key rod run to Guilderton and a super special article penned and photographed by the club’s fashion nazi-ess, Yvonne Mulder. After reading the story I am sure you will agree that she is better at policing whether or not shirts are tucked in or out, than shopping. Thanks for sharing.. I’m sure there are other rodder tales out there, hidden under curtains of embarrassment. Management Committee...For several months now, the club’s management meetings have been low on numbers. This looks to be the same for a while to come, due to health issues of some members wives that require higher prioritisation that the hobby. The management committee is a losely termed gathering of members that help administer the day to day business matters of the club like, insurance, water and electricity bills, rates, boring mail etc. This function was created years ago to remove all of this necessary boredom from the normal meetings.. Years ago, back in those wild long hair days, we used to have two meetings a month and they would always end after 10.00pm. This would result in Vince Shervington and Norm Mellows snoring as they nodded off. Syl Zammit was dressed in clobber resembling pyjamas, just in case. In recent years, the social and other special committees have met at the same time so management issues could be decided upon with a greater quorum. We need some more participation now from you. Meetings are 2nd Tuesdays of each month at 7.00 pm at the clubrooms. The evenings are getting warmer, so get out of the house and help the cause for an hour or so. There is little to do so don’t be scared of getting lobbed with a life sentence job. Many hands make .........Gotta go... but before I do, I have to wish all those amongst us in ill health, a speedy recovery.

Take Care while you’re out there, Extreme E

As the finer weather slowly approaches, the numbers are swelling

again at Jimbo’s Rodder’s Breakfast. Jimbo cooks breakfast every Satur-day morning between about 8:45am to 11:00am at the WCSRC clubrooms which is at 12 Cusack Road in Malaga. In the quieter winter breakfast season Jimbo replaced the old BBQ with a new large mother ready for the summer alfresco breakfast season. While all weekends are good, if you haven’t been yet, make a point of going to the third breakfast each month that coincides with the monthly TAC checks, that are held at the same venue. It goes right off. Heaps of rodders and heaps of hot rods. If you don’t want a superb cooked breakfast, just come along for a coffee and chin wag. On the corresponding day last month the 5-6-7 Chevy club also

rocked up for a Jimbo brekky. Jimbo was busier than a pedicurist at a centipede foot care parlor.

Toast, eggs, bacon, two types of snaggers, slices of some spicy wog-gie sausage, lettuce and tomato . All for only $5 and it’s cooked for you! Then there is coffee and tea too. It’s the cheapest breakfast in the southern hemisphere and its cooked with pride by Jimbo! Come along any Saturday and enjoy the experience.. EW

The Use of Internet Forums For those in the dark, possibly south of the river, internet forums are websites set up for viewers to read and submit comments and information to, about topics of interest for that group. For example, you could “chat” about weed sprays on a farming forum, but you wouldn’t talk about paper pulp mill designs on a greenie site, unless you are planning to blow one up.There is a by-invitation-only Perth based hot rod forum that I believe is the continuation of the old Murray Reynolds “Cruisin” site. I don’t know much more about it, other than it seems to include some custom biker and street machiners too. The “Hot Rodders Underground” has a cross section of WA’s who’s who in rodding as members including a few WCSRC members. It seems like Watto from Cranksters the gate keeper of protocol maintenance and house rules. Boris takes charge of correcting poor grammar, spelling and typing errors (self appointed sauvant)…It is entertaining reading as Boris plays school teacher and explains the errors..

I was surprised to be nominated for membership recently. Not that I’m undeserving, just that I’m a quiet l’il wall flower. I hopped in gladly after a few local rodding personalities backed my nomination, and Watto signed it off. I just had to check it out. Suckers!!! I finally penetrated the inner sanctum of WA forum hot rodding….

The repartee is often keyboard diahhorea, often funny, often informative and usually of an encouraging positive vibe. Occasionally a comment is made and some people get their knickers in a twist, but everyone has the right to reply publicly and also a mechanism to email the other party personally to chat over any differences. Over my years in hotodding, I have found that many newer rodders are fed a load of crap from somewhere, about any range of topics. The ridiculous crap I have heard about West Coast SRC over the last 25 years, by people without a clue on the topic, is amazing. It’s been so incorrect and misleading that I’ve shaken my head in amazement. (note the lack of hair). The forum is a great place to correct the incorrect, about any topic. It is a mechanism to sort out the false crap before it multiplies. It seems to work well. A recent topic close to home, was about incorrect thoughts about the Father’s Day Show. Some WC members (and other non members) got involved and when I last viewed the topic, it looked like a correct story was portrayed in the end. After a month’s observation and use, it seems like it runs pretty well. I think I have only upset one person along the way while explaining a few facts… Anyway, it’s a hobby, its fun and it’s friendship, not for sheep stations. It may not be ideal for the thin skinned, unless you keep your head down, and put a flack jacket on. Geez it can waste some time……. E.W.

ASRF TAC (Technical Advisory Committee) inspections for annual re-licensing checks and WIP (work in progress) hot rods, are held on the third Saturday of each month at WCSRC premises at 12 Cusack Road in Malaga. These days, with the increased numbers of licensed rods and rods be-ing built, the inspections generally start

at about 10.00 am, just to get them all processed, inspected and test driven. September is a busy month probably due to the number of rods completed over winter in readiness for shows and the summer cruising season. The work of the inspectors needs to be appreciated. They are hot rod savvy volunteers who give up a day each month to keep inspections alive on Saturdays. If not for their work, and the background work of

Above: TAC inspector Mick Allender is a mean cruel man. He nearly made me cry again this year and we were only do-ing the paper work. Keeps ask-ing me when will the coupe be painted! Then “what colour is it?” “Masking Tape is not a recognised colour! Pick another one Eric”. “What model wheel barrow did your tail lights stems come from?” –below–

Paul Walsh, Chris Maxwell and Mike Zidlicky, we would all be fronting over “the pits” during

a week day to get our rods inspected. Some days at the pits you can get a guy that missed

out in the morning and is grumpy all day. This is the way it used to be. Luckily times have moved on thanks to the great work by volunteering hot rodders over many years.

Rat rods are on the increase . The body and paint work on this one was considerable.New rodders wouldn’t know that when Vince Ber-riman finally got rods back on the road in the mid 70’s, we wouldn’t dream of sending a rod in primer to the pits because of the unfinished image it por-trayed. Then came the test case of a simple Fred

Nilan scenery mural on the side of Les Baldy Ryan’s bucket. It made it through and was the first licenced bucket in WA and won top bucket at the 1979 Albury Nats. Times have changed. I believe it is all to do with baby boomers holding the reigns, now, just, still. They think more like us, not our forefathers. And of course, a lot of rodders have kept putting in a lot of work since Vince moved aside. Thanks currently go to

Paul Walsh, Chris Maxwell, Mike Z and all the other TAC inspectors.

TAC checks are a hub of rodder activity. All the owners of inspected rods and all the sticky beaks, some still enjoying a Jimbo’s cooked breakfast, congregate in grunting gregarious bliss . These are great hot rodder social events, especially in fine weather when more rodders are looking for an excuse to get out in the road. If you haven’t been to one of these days, come along, but please stay out of the workshop. All welcome.

In perfect weather after the wettest September on record, Jeff Hitchins, with the aid of the internet and Western Link newsletter, mustered about 25 vehicles for a show n shine at Guilderton as part of a local fete’s attractions. We gatherered next to Macca’s in Wanneroo before we headed north en masse. It was an impressive worm of colour with only one or two Joe Public street hacks amongst our midsts for most of the journey. Ian Swinbourne, wanting to show off his new trim job and Eric in the Willys represented WCSRC at the run. After dismantling a log barrier at the park, to let the lower cars onto the grass (the coupe took the standard route) we all parked up and headed for the fete. As coun-try town fetes go it was OK, but without any automobilia stuff I could see the glazed-over look in the male faces. So it was off for some exercise by way of a half Km stroll down to the Moore river inlet at the beach. Naturally

Above: The weather was perfect for Ian’s roofless 32 tub with its new trim job. It was OK for the Willys coupe too, which found having a roof very useful this winter

the kiosk whipped a few bucks from wallets for some ice creams and the like. Denise and I were kindly invited by Pottsy and Jo to

enjoy freshly cooked scones for morning tea and later for an all singing all dancing BBQ meal for lunch. The scones were cooked in what looked like a half a rubbish bin on a gas barbie. I’m told that it was a camp oven. I know as much about camping as about changing smelly nappies, so I will take the master chef’s word on that. Pottsy spends a lot time caravan-ning with Greg Tuck, Rog-er the Lodger and with the vintage caravan club, so he is pretty knowledgeable about the whole camping

kitchen deal. Everyone headed home at about two o’clock. We stayed a bit longer and went visiting in GinGin and eventu-ally home via Bindoon at dusk. I have never seen so many bugs. The

front of the coupe was turning black and the windscreen needed a seri-ous clean at upper Swan before we could drive any further. Still a great day out hot rodding. EW.

The Lounge SagaI had decided it was time to update the lounge at home and got very excited when I stopped in to Harvey Norman to have some photos printed and spotted a lounge suite which I liked very much, on special, at a very good price. Never one to miss an opportunity, I put a down payment on it and went home feeling very pleased with myself. It was in two parts which fit into an L shaped, just what we needed for the room.Six weeks later, with the room freshly painted and the beautiful new carpet down, Bob measured up the new lounge to determine the best doorway to bring it in by.Oops, too big for both doorways. The only option was to take off a window and with the help of a fit young nephew, Bob wrestled the beast into the room. With that achieved, we discussed how to assemble the basic feet which had to be put on. Basic they may have been, but it took 4 heads to figure out how to do it (a bit like those simple Ikea flat packs!!!)Finally it was all done and we set about moving it into position in the corner of the room. Oh dear, my bargain continued it’s dramas. While I had measured both pieces and knew they would fit, unfortunately, the left bit fit the right side wall and the right bit fit the left side wall. There was no going back, Bob had already put the window back

on. After all the trouble with the darn thing, we decided it would do……after all we only lost half a doorway.Bob is still shaking his head

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE KIDS WHO WERE BORN IN THE 1920's, 30's 40's, 50's and 60's!!

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they carried us and lived in houses made of asbestos.

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes or cervical cancer.

Then after that trauma, our baby cribs were covered with bright colored lead-based paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets or shoes, not to mention, the risks some of us took hitchhiking.

As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags.

Riding in the back of a Ute on a warm day was always a special treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle.

Take away food was limited to fish and chips, no pizza shops, McDonalds, KFC, Subway or Red Rooster.

Even though all the shops closed at 6.00pm and didn't open on the weekends, somehow we didn't starve to death!

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this.

We could collect old drink bottles and cash them in at the corner store and buy Fruit Tingles and some fire crackers to blow up frogs and lizards with.

We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank soft drinks with sugar in it, but we weren't overweight because...... WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on. No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. We built tree houses and cubby houses and played in creek beds with matchbox cars.

We did not have Play Stations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 99 channels

Page 23: Klaxon October 2009 - Cyber Hot Rodders...There is a by-invitation-only Perth based hot rod forum that I believe is the continuation of the old Murray Reynolds “Cruisin” site.

on cable, no video tape or DVD movies, no mobile phones, no personal computers, no In-ternet or Internet chat rooms.........WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no Lawsuits from these accidents.

Only girls had pierced ears!

You could only buy Easter Eggs and Hot Cross buns at Easter time.......no really!

We drank milk laced with Strontium 90 from cows that had eaten grass covered in nuclear fallout from the atomic testing at Maralinga in 1956.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just yelled for them!

Mum didn't have to go to work to help dad make ends meet!

Footy had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!

Our teachers used to belt us with big sticks and leather straps and bully's always ruled the playground at school.

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!

This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever! The past 70 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all.

And YOU are one of them! CONGRATULATIONS!

You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated our lives for our own good. Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it?!
