(USPS 585-060) Never Let the Gift Go Unused The Christmas gifts have longed been opened and my hunch is that you, like myself, received several gift cards that are still

sitting in a desk drawer, in the car console or located somewhere in the house. I actually enjoy the cards, in that I can purchase items that I know I need and will enjoy. In fact, research indicates 39.2 percent of shoppers purchased a department store gift card for family and friends, while 33.4 percent opted for a restaurant gift card for that special person on their Christmas list. To some extent, the same will be true for Valentine’s Day as well, especially for spas. Now, the consideration is whether or not we will actually redeem those gift cards!

According to estimates reported in the Journal of State Taxation, the typical American home has an average of $300.00 in unredeemed gift cards lying around in their homes, cars, wallets, purses, desk drawers and closets. Such cards are also often misplaced, accidently throw out, or only partially redeemed. Since 2005, an estimated $45.7 billion has been floating around in unused gift card balances (Finder.com). What good is a gift card, if it is never used or still has available funds that have never

been redeemed?

I believe the same can be said of our faith—why deny ourselves God’s gift of his Son, and the love and grace he has poured out for us, to go unused? God’s grace always awaits those ready to receive it. It is redeemed, so to speak, when we open our hearts to his love. God’s grace is found in the sacraments, in our daily prayer, in his Word, in our relationships, but God’s grace is also available to us in our struggles, in our temptations and weaknesses, in our spiritual battles, in our family problems, in our fears and anxiety and in other challenging situations, if we are willing to redeem it.

Saint Paul certainly knew how to call upon the grace of Christ to assist him, but only until he realized such grace could be found in the midst of his personal struggles. In 2 Corinthians 8-10 we read: “Three times I begged the Lord about this, that it might leave me, but he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.’ I will rather boast most gladly of my weaknesses, in order that the power of Christ may dwell with me. Therefore, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions and constraints, for the sake of Christ; for when I am weak, then I am strong.” We all have struggles—physical, emotional and spiritual distress of all kinds—and Christ offers assurance that his grace is with us in the midst of them.

Saint Paul referred to his as “a thorn in the flesh,” but whatever we call them; we are not left alone to carry them. Grace, the ever-present movement of the Spirit of God within us, sustains us. This gift of grace, which can be neither earned nor purchased, is a free gift and our opportunity to participate in the life of God. The Catechism of the Catholic Church defines grace as “…first and foremost the gift of the Spirit who justifies and sanctifies us. But grace also includes the gifts that the Spirit grants us to associate us with his work, to enable us to collaborate in the salvation of others and in the growth of the Body of Christ, the Church (CCC, §2003). The Trappist monk and spiritual writer, Thomas Merton, explained grace in this way: “Grace is not a strange, magic substance which is subtly filtered into our souls to act as a kind of spiritual penicillin. Grace is unity, oneness within ourselves, oneness with God” (The New Man, p.29, Bloomsbury Publishing, 2003).

I have the distinct privilege of daily witnessing the power of God’s grace working within individuals and in the Body of Christ, his Church. Bringing healing to others through sacramental grace reminds me of how small I am and how large God is in our world. The young man battling cancer with courage beyond ordinary, human capacity; the husband and wife healing from overwhelming hurt and brokenness in their marriage; or celebrating Mass and having the opportunity to feed God’s people with the Body and Blood of his Son, reminds me over and over again of the power of his grace. I am humbled by the healing presence of God in our lives, which enables such courage to be exemplified. This grace is available to all of us, if we are willing to trust in our loving Savior and open our hearts to him. Therefore, let us make sure we do not allow the gift of God’s grace to go unused. We are never alone and in whatever we are confronting—physically, emotion-ally, relationally or spiritually—the grace of God is ours, when we open our hearts to receive it. God knows what we need and when we need it. Like a loving parent, God wants only the best for us. He is that close to us—and even more. Saint Augustine said it best: “In my heart of hearts God is closer to me than I am to myself.” God’s grace is available. Why let the Gift go unused?

State Directors’ Annual Report – 2018 It is hard to imagine that another year has come to an end. The year 2018 has been a busy one for all us Directors, attending Board Meetings in Austin, local society meetings, District Meetings, Officer Meetings and various KJZT spon-sored events such as Junior Camp, Junior Awards Day, and Family Fun Day. In addition to our attendance at the various functions listed above, we had three Directors attend The American Fraternal Alliance annual meeting held in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Several other Directors represented KJZT in vari-ous Czech and/or Catholic organizations such as TOCA, NACC, and CEFT throughout the year. Each year we Directors present scholarships to our receiving youth, sell life insurance policies, IRA’s and annuities, help to recruit new members and insur-ance agents, serve as local officers in our home societies, participate in local society’s projects, maintain our insurance license through continuing education insurance classes, and all obtain FIC designation. As State Directors we hold ourselves accountable to you, the members. As always we try to make the best financial and policy decisions possible for our organization. We are at your service if and when you need us to help with proj-ects or to answer questions. As we move forward in 2019 with our new name “KJZT FAMILY LIFE” and celebrating our 125th year as a great Fraternal, we sincerely Thank-You, our members and local officers for helping to make KJZT such a great organization. Our grandmothers and mothers, we know would be quite pleased with all of us, continuing the great works of compassion, kindness, and mercy that they all started 125 years ago. Let us all make it a goal in 2019 to help KJZT to grow in membership besides continuing to serve God, His Church and His People. May Mary Assumed into Heaven help us in all our endeavors!Respectively Submitted,Joyce Kurtz, Lead Director

State Officers’ Annual Report – 2018 2018 was a year of change for KJZT Family Life. We were determined to make a fresh and positive start. Our focus has been and will continue to be moving the Fraternal forward. By bringing our mistakes to light, we concentrated on how to learn from them and make the appropriate changes. We embraced change by placing an emphasis on becoming more efficient and resourceful to better help serve our members as well as being more fiscally re-sponsible. On top of that, we promoted teamwork more than ever. Brainstorm-ing, collaboration and joint effort became the norm when completing projects. We took on and succeeded in our most challenging endeavor yet with the rebranding of our organization and the reconstruction of our website. It was important to us to focus on a new name that encompassed who we are and at the same time what we have always been. We work hard every day to hold on to our past as we move toward our future. In addition to the rebranding, we also attended functions that involved our members and possible future members-District Meetings, Family Fun Day, Ju-nior Awards Day and Texas Alliance for Life walks. We began shining more of a light on our loyal and hard-working society of-ficers and members. They are the cornerstone of our fraternal program and volunteer network. We look forward to deepening our relationships with our members. We con-tinue to strive to enrich our members’ lives both financially and spiritually. We thank you for your membership and wish you a prosperous 2019!

Other News

With the new year, it’s a great time to consid-er or review some important documents related to your medical decision-making. I am talking about a Medical Power of Attorney and a Direc-tive to Physicians. These documents help guide you through various scenarios that may involve important choices about your health care, espe-cially if you become seriously ill. Even though one might express wishes verbally to their doctor,

having documents in writing to guide decisions is much more preferable. The Medical Power of Attorney is a document that assigns a person to make health care decisions on behalf of another (principal) should that person be un-able to make such decisions. The agent chosen to make those decisions is of-ten a close family member or trusted person that will make decisions with the knowledge of the principal which may include religious and moral beliefs. The agent must make the decisions according to the agent’s assessment of the prin-cipal’s best interests. When completing a Medical Power of Attorney, alternate agents can be named if the primary agent is unable or unwilling to make decisions. Medical Power of Attorney forms can be obtained from local hospitals, doctors offices, attorneys, the Texas Medical Association, or other places. The form should be notarized or signed in front of witnesses as directed. The document can be revoked or the agents may be changed as situations change. Another important document is a Directive to Physicians. This document ad-dresses medical situations in persons with terminal or irreversible conditions. It has a more limited scope of decision-making than the Medical Power of Attor-ney. Decisions might include what types of aggressive measures will be taken or what treatments might be withheld or withdrawn. Again a trusted agent that knows your values, wishes, and understands the medical condition can be ex-tremely helpful to you and your physicians to help guide your care. These forms are also easily available from the sources listed previously. It is understandable that one may not want to think about the negatives of deal-ing with serious medical situations, but advanced planning can limit some of the stress during those trying times. It can be helpful and comforting to know that someone who knows you well and who you trust will be there to make such decisions for you.

St. Elizabeth Society KJZT No. 6 Bryan made a donation to St. Joseph Catholic Church before Christmas in the form of a new altar cloth for the main altar at the request of some members of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Rosary Guild of the parish in charge of changing and ordering altar linens.

At one of our meetings in April our members were asked to choose the lace pattern for a new main altar cloth. Our members chose the cross within wheat and grapes pattern to be ordered from Plauen, Germany. For over 150 years, the city of Plauen and the surrounding villages have been known for the beauty and qual-ity of their lace. Over the last few decades the number of manufacturers has rapidly decreased in the face of increasing competition from Asia. Now only a small handful of manufacturers in Europe, let alone Plauen, make lace with natural materials such as linen and cotton. Compared to other laces, the making of cotton lace requires more thread and more intensive work, which is why it has become so rare today. Sachsen Imports was pleased to bring to us this exclusive line of liturgical lace edging, also known as church lace, used most often as edging for altar cloths. Once the Plauen German lace we had chosen was delivered to Bryan, the ladies then sent it to a specialty seamstress in Chicago, Illinois, to sew the delicate lace onto a new white altar cloth. The cloth was also embroidered in gold in the seam edge with the words “Given by KJZT 2018”. The finished product was delivered to St. Joseph Catholic Church just in time for the Christmas season. The new altar cloth was placed on the main altar, and with the red poinsettias above the altar area and beneath the altar with the fully decorated Christmas tree to the side, the main church was beautiful for the Christmas Masses and into the New Year. Our Society was very impressed with the work that had been done and was pleased to have made such a meaningful donation to the church in praise of God.Submitted by Liz Zemanek, Society Secretary

At the Society’s annual Christmas party the members and their families enjoyed the tra-ditional activities — delicious food, beautiful decorations, sing-alongs, guessing games,

children’s Christmas crafts, silent auction, and St. Nicholas. This year a new feature was added — Cher-ished Memories. This idea was born at the November meeting when President Jane Hellinger asked the members present to share a memory of their favorite childhood toy. This prompted special memories of toys from trains to dolls. Treasurer Eileen Rosipal suggested we include a display of the items at our Christmas party so that the children could see the toys of yesteryear and the adults could reminisce. This idea was enthusiastically embraced by all. In addition to a beautiful floral arrangement on each table, Anne Hyzak also included a colorful replica of the traditional costumes of the various regions of the Czech and Slovak Republics. Everyone enjoyed looking for the one that represented their ancestors. Pictured are a few of the toys and one of the table decorations.

After a very successful Junior Director’s Work-shop that was held at the State Office on Satur-day, January 12th, the Junior Division is prepared to begin the 2019 New Year with a lot of excit-ing and updated activities. A special Thank You to all the wonderful ladies that took the time to attend and accomplish this great opportunity for the Juniors. Junior Division Awards Day will no longer be

held, but the Juniors will still be able to remain active and earn points through-out the year. Instead of the State Royalty, a Junior member from each District who earns the most points will be chosen as the “District Junior Representa-tive”. The Junior will be selected from Group 3, ages 12-14 years and Group 4, ages 15-High School. This award and the other awards will be presented to all the Juniors who participated in the Point & Merit System during the year at their District Social. So please start making plans to attend your Social and check for the date and time of your District Social in this issue of the KJZT Family Life Journal. Even though the revised Point & Merit System is not starting until this year, the leader from each District will be chosen based on the points that will be turned in this year. Camp Guardian Angel will be begin on Sunday, June 23rd and end on Wednes-day, June 26th, 2019 at Camp Kubena in Ledbetter, Texas. The days and the cost remain the same as last year. The camp fee is $187.00 and it is $20.00 for High & Low Ropes per camper. Any Junior member age 7 thru 17 can attend. Raffle tickets are in the process of being mailed. The Juniors are encouraged to sell as many raffle tickets as they can to help absorb the cost of camp and other camp expenses. More plans are in the making for other State activities, such as Family Funday at Splashway in Sheridan, Texas, State Community Service Projects like the Texas Ramp Project and Texas Alliance for Life-Walk for Life, just to give you an idea. Please let me know if you need more information or have any questions. Look-ing forward to seeing you and being with all of you at some of the upcoming events.

After college she worked for Texas Old Age Assistance, now named the Texas Department of Human Services. Odie married C.R. (Ross) Hamilton in 1938. Odie joined The Catholic Women’s Fraternal of Texas (KJZT) in 1958 and the Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court Maria Galante #115. She was the KJZT treasurer for many years and was recognized for her service in the KJZT membership Drive selling Life Insurance. In 2008, she was recognized for 50 years of membership in both organizations. Being of Czech heritage, she spent many years at Aqua Fest on Czech Night working the Kolache Booth with her KJZT friends and family. Odie was a fun-spirited woman who always had an open door for friends and family. She loved children, enjoyed gardening, travel and entertaining. She is missed by many. Odie was preceded in death by her parents, Marie and Edward Bartosh; husband, Ross, and their first born son, Edward Ross; brothers, Shorty, Jerry, Roman, Henry, Max Ben and Walter Bartosh; sisters, Lillian Cervanka, Anita Bartosh, Eleanor Bartosh and Georgia Blakeslee. THE MAGNIFICAT CANTICLE OF

MARY My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed: the Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear Himin every generation.

He has shown the strength of His arm,He has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich He has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of His servant Israelfor He has remembered his promise of mercy, the promise He made to our fathers,to Abraham and his children for ever. Amen.
