32014 Greater Kingston Community • Chamber of Commerce Destination Guide & Business Directory

My family and I moved to Kingston in the 1940’s. It was a great place to live because of the small town atmosphere and great neighbors. Many years later I can say the same is generally true. Our goal at the Kingston Chamber is to sup-port the local businesses within the Greater Kingston area, Indianola, Hansville, Port Gamble, Port Gamble S’Klaalam Tribal Nation and Suquamish Tribal Nation.

I am proud to be the 2014 Chamber President and with our Executive Director, Colleen Carey and fellow board mem-bers, my goal in 2014 is to help all of our local businesses grow and thrive within this unique community of towns and neighborhoods.

We are on the move – Our Visitor’s Center is positioned to attract the 2 million plus people arriving in Kingston via the Washington State ferry system each year. Our friendly and knowledgeable staff of volunteers keep the center open 7 days per week throughout the spring and summer and 6 days per week the remainder of the year.

Economic winds are changing – Once vacant buildings downtown are beginning to fill again and there is a charge of excitement in the air. It is so very exciting to see our Greater Kingston Chamber of Commerce, along with the Port of Kingston, the Greater Kingston Economic Development Committee, the Suquamish/S’Klallam Tribes and our many small businesses all pulling together to move this community forward.

There are many opportunities for volunteerism in our community. Contact our office to see how you can help!

Make it a great year!Mike Haley,President

I am pleased to be your Executive Director and I am very passionate about my work and highly motivated to help our business community flourish. This year, I, along with Bim Prince of Morgan Stanley and MaryLou Harris of the Ameri-can Red Cross, will develop and implement a Shop Local Campaign. We firmly believe that nothing is more important to the health and vitality of a small community such as ours, than our local businesses.

Our Chamber is unique in that it serves as the Greater North Kitsap Visitor’s Center as well as Kingston’s Event Committee. We have more than 3,000 visitors that come through our door each year, a number that increases with each passing summer. We participate, plan and/or execute most of downtown Kingston’s events including the 3 day 4th of July Celebration, Concerts on the Cove, Kites Over Kingston, Kingston Wine Walk, Kingston Slug Hunt, just to name a few.

As stewards of our town of Kingston we have taken on the responsibility of taking care of the “Big Belly” trash compactors in the downtown corridor at an annual expense

of approximately $5,000 because as unincorporated Kitsap County. Youur Chamber provides the Light Poles beautifica-tion with the hanging flower baskets throughout the summer and the cedar wreaths in the winter and sponsors a bi-annual town clean up event.

Without the support of our business community through membership dues, these vital services would not be pos-sible. Whenever possible please utilize the services of the members within these pages.

We would like to thank our Patron Members for their additional contri-bution which allows the chamber to grow and thrive even more.

Best Regards,Colleen Carey,Executive Director

Welcome to Kingston. Home of the Greater Kingston Chamber of

Commerce, and the stronghold of the future economy of North Kitsap. Situ-ated on one of the most picturesque, seaside locations on the Puget Sound, Kingston is home to more than 8,000 people from all walks of life.

Kingston’s location is closer to the I-5 corridor than any other community in North Kitsap, and more than 2.1 million vehicles a year enter the Kitsap Peninsula through the Washington

State Ferry landing in Kingston. This effortless and affordable accessibil-ity, between the east and west side, gives Kingston a distinct advantage over other areas in Kitsap County, and ensures the potential for economic and business development in this little city by the sea.

As the second largest unincorpo-rated area in Kitsap County, Kingston’s location is an affordable alternative to other areas, with a definite lower cost of living than comparable communi-

ties. Kingston truly lives up to the ideal location to raise a family, start or grow a business, retire in style or just get away from traffic, crime, high cost of living or troublesome governmental regulatory requirements.

Local businesses have found them-selves successful in Kingston and ev-erything necessary to support a thriving community is available to the residents of Kingston. Restaurants offering a variety of fare and entertainment, recre-ational businesses specializing in water

and wilderness sports, industrial parks, boasting manufacturing and services, construction companies, financial advi-sors and banks, lumber and hardware stores, accommodations, food mar-kets, artisans and craftsmen are among the prosperous existing businesses in Kingston. Additionally, great schools, with excellent test scores, churches, and an abundance of parks, trails and natural resources add to the appeal of Kingston.

More than ever before, countless opportunities abound for the economic growth of the area, and the initiation of new business opportunities in Kingston. The formation of the North Kitsap Economic Assessment Commit-tee, started by a group of dedicated Kingston individuals, resulted in a greater understanding of the economic strengths and opportunities, as well as the weaknesses in the area. After gathering a great deal of data, includ-ing demographics and statistics, and analyzing the information, the group morphed from “Assessment” to “Development” and is now called the Greater Kingston Economic Develop-

ment Committee. Now affiliated with the much larger Kitsap Economic De-velopment Alliance (KEDA), this group will carry out the recommendations of the assessment committee. The recommendations are focused around bringing in more businesses, while supporting existing businesses, and increasing the visitor industry in Kings-ton. It has also been recommended that a branding effort for Kingston be undertaken, which will result in mak-ing Kingston a successful destination. An effort to involve the community was conducted through a community survey after recommendations from a professional consultant. The results are being analyzed at this writing. In addition, investigations into bringing in a hotel and destination restaurant are underway. With the expansion of port properties, and the efforts of many civic minded, volunteer Kingston citizens, resources to start new busi-nesses are infinite, and the future for

This busy marina, is much sought after by local boaters, and hosts many guest boaters throughout the year. In fact, more than 4,500 boat nights per year are occupied averaging 91 nights per slip. These visiting boaters help contribute to the economic vitality of Kingston, by enjoying the retail and commercial

Kingston has never looked brighter. An environment of cooperation

among the existing businesses in Kingston invites competition for more economic development. With an en-trepreneurial spirit, business and com-munity leaders in Kingston have spent an exciting year exploring the potential for economic development in Kingston. Among the opportunities revealed are an abundance of space, buildings that are occupancy ready, construction sites available, less bureaucracy with coop-erative county and state representa-tives, lower rents, taxes and fees, and recreation and natural resources ready to support economic development. Couple these positives with the excite-ment of a growing tourism industry, and you have a formula for success and expansion that will be evident over the next few years in Kingston.

The work of the North Kitsap Tourism Consortium has resulted in an effort to increase tourism in Kingston and the North Kitsap area, and while maintain-

ing the small town charm of Kingston. The plan is to increase local economic sustainability through tourism.

The new website, www.Experien-ceNorthKistap.com focuses on mar-keting Kingston and the North Kitsap Peninsula as a tourist destination. As stated by the consortium tourism is the front door to economic development, and dollars generated by visitors can be invested to support our schools, social services and other non-tourism business segments. Tourism is big business, and more than $10 billion in sales supported over 130,000 jobs in the Puget Sound region. The North Kitsap Tourism Consortium is work-ing to attract more of these dollars to Kingston, by attracting more visitors to Kingston.

Kingston is a recreational play-ground, and many activities are avail-able year round. A summer Farmer’s Market, annual Wine Walk, 3 day Fourth of July Celebration featuring local musi-cians and “Tiny Town”, Art in the Woods, Kites over Kingston and Concerts on the Cove are a few of the many events offered in Kingston. Supporting these Kingston activities are the many service organizations, such as Rotary, Kiwanis, Soroptimists, Garden Club and many of our small businesses that take an active role in ensuring the success of these events.

Kingston is a great place to call home for all the reasons mentioned, and it is important to highlight an exciting recent addition to the Kingston scene, as we look forward to the expansion of the Kingston community.

In November the Village Green Se-nior Apartments, a Martha and Mary Community, celebrated its comple-tion and grand opening. This com-munity provides affordable senior

Find out more about it by visiting the Kingston Visitors Center (home to the Greater Kingston Community Chamber of Commerce). It is just up from the ferry landing in the North Star Building and is open six days a week, (seven in the summer) with the help of a team of volunteers. More than 3500 visitors a year come to the center from all over the world, and in addition to providing hiking and walking maps and thousands of brochures of things to do on the Kitsap and Olympic peninsulas, there are souvenirs available, as well as hats, t-shirts, hoodies and postcards. Tickets to local events and venues, and fishing and hunting licenses are also available.

Port Gamble is set along the scenic shores of Hood Canal and Gamble

Bay, a mile east of the floating bridge on Highway 104, or eight miles west of the Kingston Ferry terminal. Port Gamble is a privately owned National Historic Landmark District and is the jewel on the Kitsap Peninsula.

Port Gamble was named in 1841 by surveyor Charles Wilkes in honor of Lt. Robert Gamble, who was wounded in the War of 1812 sea battle between the US Frigate President and the British Belvidere. Port Gamble was briefly known in its for-mative days of 1853 as Teekalet, Indian for “brightness of the noon-day sun.”

The 120-acre site was founded in 1853 by Puget Mill Company (later named Pope & Talbot) as a home for mill workers and their families and was one of the premier mill towns in Puget Sound. It was the oldest continuously operating mill towns in North America before it closed in 1995 after 142 years.

The town is a popular day trip, wed-

ding destination, and meeting and event venue. It is also a great destination for residents of neighboring Jefferson, Ma-son, Pierce, King and Snohomish coun-ties, especially during the summer when events (both large and small) take place almost every weekend, from a Medieval Faire to a Logging Show. Other events include Old Mill Days and Forest Festival, Ghost Conference, Fiber and Fabrics

Festival, Ghost Walks, Maritime Music Festival, Historic Walking tours, many running and biking events, the annual Fruitcake Contest and an old-fashioned Country Christmas, which help the town draw visitors’ year around.

The Port Gamble Theater re-opened to live stage performances after 60 years, come see the Port Gamble Theater Company as they and others perform throughout the year. The theater area was renovated and still keeps the old style feel from years ago.

Boutiques offer local and regional fine arts, hand crafted gifts from around the world, restaurant, books, espresso, fiber arts and weaving, fair traded local gifts, high tea, BBQ, kayak rentals, fabric and quilts and of course the feel of an old general store and cafe.

The New England style town features turn-of-the-century buildings, a historic church, picturesque grounds and a historic museum filled with artifacts and replicas from the town’s mill days. Elms and Maples line the town’s street – painting the area with hues of gold, orange and red in the autumn.

Port Gamble has retained its historic charm and character; and remains com-pany owned, now by Pope Resources and managed by Olympic Property Group, a division of Pope Resources.

Suquamish, a community located on the Port Madison Indian Reservation,

just a few miles south of Kingston, is home to the Suquamish Tribe, a sovereign nation. The name Suquamish originated from the Tribe’s winter village site called “d’suq’wub,” which means “place of clear salt water.” Suquamish is easily reached by highway and is near the Bainbridge Island and Kingston ferry docks. Suquamish was once a vacation get-away with small week-end fishing cabins along the waterfront. Today, the community is composed of privately-owned and tribal-trust property.

Chief Seattle, a powerful Native leader of the northwest, is buried at the Suqua-mish Memorial Cemetery. The City of Seattle is named for him. Chief Seattle, a great orator and peacekeeper, was instru-mental in preserving the culture of the Suquamish people after the treaty negotia-tions in the 1850s. Chief Seattle expressed his people’s relationship with the earth when he delivered a now famous speech during the treaty accords. This historic speech, additional history, and exhibits of Suquamish, the Suquamish Tribe, and the Port Madison Indian Reservation can be found at the Suquamish Museum.

The community of Suquamish, in the center of which stands their new com-munity center, the House of Awakened Culture, is home to some of Kitsap Penin-sula’s most eye-catching views. The area looks across Puget Sound to the City of Seattle, the Cascade Mountain range, and south to Mount Rainier. Nearby, tourists can visit Grover’s Creek Fish Hatchery, the Suquamish Museum, Old Man House Park, the veterans’ memorial, and Chief Seattle’s gravesite.

In July 2009, the Suquamish com-munity hosted the Canoe Journey — cel-ebrating the 20th anniversary of the 1989 event which occurred from Suquamish to Seattle to celebrate Washington state’s Centennial — with food and dance, mu-sic and sharing between Tribes from all over the coastal Northwest. Since 1993, when the Bella Bella people challenged the Canoe Nations to paddle to their shores, the Canoe Journey has been an annual event with stops up and down the coast.

The community of Suquamish contin-ues to show respect for the land, waters and natural resources, and a genuine understanding of the relationships among these systems. The Suquamish Museum, www.suquamish.nsn.us/mu-seum is a substantial resource for more information about Suquamish.

Port Gamble s’Klallam tribe

The Port Gamble S’Klallam reservation is located on the northern tip of the

Kitsap Peninsula in Washington State. It is adjacent to Port Gamble Bay—a stunning scenic waterway that has provided sustenance to the Port Gamble S’Klallam people for more than 1,000 years. Many of the Tribe’s more than 1,150 members depend on the bay for personal use and/or commercial fishing and shellfishing.

Originally known as the Nux Sklai Yem or the Strong People, the Port Gamble S’Klallam are descendants of the Salish

people who have lived in the Puget Sound basin and surrounding areas since 2400 B.C. The Tribe’s original ancestral village was located at what is known today as the town of Port Gamble. The S’Klallams were asked to relocate in 1853 to make way for the sawmill once open at the townsite.

The Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe is dedicated to maintaining its traditional way of life and does so, in part, by acting as a steward for the environment, which has included the protection of Port

Entertainment and TourismThe Port Gamble S’Klallam Reservation

is known for its stunning wooded vistas and tranquil, picturesque water views. While in Kitsap County, visit the carving center located across from the Tribal Center on Little Boston Road. The carving center offers for sale traditional art crafted by master carvers.

In 2012, the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe purchased Heronswood, a multi-acre botanical garden located just outside the boundaries of their reservation. Once a revered destination for horticultural enthusiasts, Heronswood was sold by its original owners with public access minimized. The Tribe, aided by passionate supporters, began restoration efforts at Heronswood and has opened it back up to fans and plant lovers through Plant Sale & Garden Open events.

PhilanthropyThe Port Gamble S’Klallam Foundation

is a 501(c)3 organization dedicated to improving the quality of life of tribal members while increasing understanding of the Tribe’s rich cultural heritage. Recent projects have included the publication of The Strong People, the first comprehensive written history of the Port Gamble S’Klallam. In addition, the Foundation has been instrumental in efforts related to the restoration of Heronswood—from managing donations and memberships to organizing volunteer and outreach events.

The Tribe also donates tens of thousands of dollars a year through its Community Awards program as well as an annual fundraising campaign by the Point Casino for a pre-selected charitable partner.

Located at the northernmost tip of the Kitsap Peninsula is the town of Hans-

ville, Washington. Just ten miles from Kingston, Hansville is home to the Point

No Point Lighthouse, a Nature Conser-vancy Reserve, three county parks and an extensive forest and beach trail system. Originally, the area was referred to as Point No Point. In 1841 Commander Charles Wilkes of the US Exploring Expedition came upon a sandy spit, thinking it a point of land. Upon closer inspection, the spit was much smaller than it looked and there was no “point” to speak of. He named it Point No Point. As Seattle and Tacoma grew and marine traffic increased, so did the occurrence of marine calamities, mak-ing it necessary to construct light stations along Admiralty Inlet and Puget Sound. In 1879 construction was begun on the Point No Point Lighthouse and on January 1, 1880 it officially went into service.

About the same time, the area started to see the arrival of settlers, mostly Nor-wegian, Swedish, and Finnish immigrants. Two Norwegian settlers Hans Zachariasen and Anton Husby ran a ferry service with their boats, from the steamers off shore to the beach, there being no dock built yet. As legend has it, Anton was a temperate man who would refuse to ferry anyone who had been imbibing. Upon learning that, one Scandinavian man remarked to his friend “Vell, how vill dey get ashore if

Anton von’t ferry dem? “ “Oh don’t vorry”, said the friend, “If Anton von’t, Hans vill.” And thus the town is called Hansville.

There are a variety of reasons to visit the Hansville area. There are beaches, hiking trails, and an open light house. Foulweather Bluff is a Nature Conser-vancy area famous for Bird Watching and beach combing. If you become hungry you can find everything from a meal to an ice cream cone. And if you would like to spend a little extra time there is a bed and breakfast or the opportunity to stay at the Point-No-Point Light House in quarters that are a mere 30 feet from the beach.

The residents of Hansville are a friendly and close knit group focused on com-munity activities and maintenance of the natural beauty and rural atmosphere in which they are fortunate enough to reside. Hansville will welcome you but be sure to respect the beaches, lakes, nature trails and speed limits. Rumor has it, Big Foot still resides within the wilds here and he will find you if you don’t!
