Welcome to the Greater Kingston Chamber of Commerce membership and business directory. This magazine is

a directory for members, non members and visitors alike. We hope that you fi nd the information on these pages useful and informational. Our mission as a chamber is to encourage and promote the interests of the local business community. On these pages you fi nd services, retail, dining and much more, through our membership directory, you can browse by category or alphabetical listings.

As stated in our mission statement, the Chamber draws strength from attracting participating businesses into membership. The chamber organizes and directs the energy, talent, and money contributed by the members into projects which improve the business climate in our communities. We encourage all businesses in the greater North Kitsap area to join the chamber, we work hard on your behalf to attract new businesses as well as visitors to our communities.

From Kingston, Hansville, Indianola to Port Gamble we are here to support you in any way that we can. You do not have to be a member to attend the many functions we have; our monthly lunches are held the fi rst Tuesday of the month at the Kingston Yacht Club, we encourage people to show up

at 11:30am for networking opportunities. Our after hours are held the second Thursday of the month at various member businesses, contact the chamber offi ce to fi nd the location each month. If you are a chamber member and would like to host an afterhours you can contact the chamber to fi nd out more information.

If you would like to be more involved in the chamber there are several ways in which you can take advantage of your membership. Join one of our committees; Beautifi cation, Events or the Stakeholders (which is a group of business people who meet monthly to work on the economic development of our communities). There is never a lack of opportunities to volunteer, and you do not have to be a member.

We would like to thank all of our members for their contribution to the chamber and encourage any business who is not a member to contact the chamber to fi nd out how you can become a member.

The Chamber’s Board of Directors focuses on maitaining the organization’s fi nancial viability and collectively works on a variety of annual projects and annual community events.

What Does The Chamber Do?The Greater Kingston Chamber of Commerce supports the business activities of its members through promotion, advertising, networking, and participation in community events such as the Kingston Fourth of July celebration.

The Chamber runs the visitors Center which provides tourism and relocation information to people visiting or moving to our area.

The Chamber works with other local Chambers of Commerce, the Kitsap Peninsula Visitor and Convention Bureau, and other groups and agencies to accomplish its mission.

The Chamber provides its members a voice in community and governmental activities.

PurposeThe Greater Kingston Chamber of Com-merce is an association of the business people who act to improve our community. The Chamber is an independent, non-profi t corporation run by its members through an elected Board of Directors. The Chamber draws strength from attracting participating businesses into membership. The Chamber organizes and directs the energy, talent, and money contributed by the members into projects which improve the business climate in our community.

The Chamber also makes contributions to our community for the benefi t of all citizens. It is the profi table operation of business that provides jobs and produces the wealth to fi nance government, education, cultural, and charitable programs which address the needs of our community & runs the visitors & tourism center.

2. Automatic listing of your business in this annual Publication (5,000 copies distributed across the County and beyond) as well as in the Membership Directory on the Chamber website.

3. Networking opportunities at the Monthly Business Luncheon, After Hours Events and Kingston Networking meetings.

ested landscape and sparkling shores of North Kitsap is a regional economic powerhouse.

The business community of the North End — Kingston, Port Gamble, Hansville, Port Gamble S’Klallam and Suquamish — pulses with economic energy. The North End is home to regional leaders in enter-tainment, recreation, retail, services and tourism.

Nearly 2.1 million vehicles a year enter the Kitsap Penin-sula through the Washington state ferry landing in Kingston. That’s according to Walt Elliot, chairman of the Kingston Ferry Advisory Committee and a member of the Kingston Port Commission.

The Port of Kingston’s guest slips were rented out for more than 4,500 boat nights this year, accord-ing to Port Executive Director Kori Henry. With 49 guest slips, that’s an average of 91 occupied nights per slip. The port has 262 permanent tenants, of which 11 are liveaboards, Henry said.

Downtown and Uptown Kingston are diverse — banking, construction, dining, entertainment, financial services, gro-

cery, health care, legal services, lodging, manufacturing, real estate, recreation, and retail.

One mile north of downtown, more than 6,000 union laborers were trained last year at a school operated by the Northwest Laborers-Employers Training Trust Fund. The campus is one of fi ve operated by the fund in Washington state and Utah.

The campus provides construction training for men and women, and offers 28 classes in various construction-related fi elds. The school’s apprenticeship program trains men and women interested in ca-reers as construction craft laborers.

It’s been an exciting year for the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe. The new Point Casino opened in May; at 52,000 square

feet, it’s more than double the size of the earlier casino. The new Point employs more than 200, up from 126. That increased the number of private-sector employees to approximately 320, making the Tribe one of the top 20 private-sector employers in Kitsap County (it’s among the top 15 on the public sector list, with 274 employees).

The Point is a showcase of S’Klallam art, has an upscale restaurant and two casual dining restau-rants, and an event center that can seat 760. Since opening, The Point Event Center has featured national headliners, among them The Marshall Tucker Band, .38 Special, and Smash Mouth.

In June, Port Gamble S’Klallam bought the renowned Heron-swood Gardens at auction; the price was not disclosed. The Port Gamble Development Authority, the economic development arm

of the Tribe, is working on plans for use of the 15-acre estate; it will open as a wed-ding venue in spring.

Port Gamble S’Klallam’s other ventures are Gliding Eagle Marketplace; Cedar Spe-cialties, a supplier of logs for cultural use; and PGDAccess, a broadband provider. The development authority is assessing other economic development opportunities,

Across the bay at the town of Port Gamble, owner Olympic Property Group was expected to submit its master plan to the county by the end of 2012.

The plan includes the selling of existing homes and development of 300 more homes, as well as a farmers market, a marine science center, a horticulture and landscape center, a working orchard and vineyard, restaurants, trails and nature viewing areas, and a waterfront board-walk.

Among the plans for the former mill site: Construction of a 100-room lodge or inn, next to a new dock, facing Hood Canal; moorage for tall ships; and, on the east side of the mill site, manufacturing and warehouses.

“It’s all the things we’ve talked about for 10 years but have never done,” OPG Presi-dent Jon Rose said in an earlier interview. “We’re zoned for it. The environmental cleanup is now in its fi nal stages. We have been fi xing up the town and getting it revved up for this, and it looks better now than at any time in its history. It’s ready to go out and shine on its own.”

Still to be done at the old mill site: Beach restoration, dredging of wood waste, and

removal of the former dock and creosoted pilings.

OPG wants to improve the economic viability of the mill town-turned-tourism destination, which must still be subsidized at $250,000 a year by OPG. Thirty-six busi-nesses operate out of restored 19th cen-tury homes and buildings. The Port Gamble General Store features a restaurant and two museums — one historical, the other featuring the largest private collection of seashells in the world. Across the street is a restored community theater. St. Paul’s Church and the Hood Canal Pavilion will accommodate 74 weddings in 2012, ac-cording to spokesman Bob Silver.

All told, Port Gamble businesses provide jobs for approximately 150 people. There are currently 52 full-time residents.

The Suquamish Tribe’s Port Madison Enterprises is the third-largest private-sector employer in Kitsap County, with 770 employees, according to the Kitsap Economic Development Alliance. (Harrison Medical Center is fi rst with 2,379, Walmart is second with 1,003.)

Port Madison Enterprises, the Tribe’s economic development arm, manages Clearwater Casino Resort, White Horse Golf Club, Kiana Lodge, PME Retail, and a property management division.

“PME employment opportunities are as diverse as the people who work here and require a number of skill sets ranging from customer service to computer science,” the agency’s website states.

In addition to economic development, Suquamish continues to invest in education on- and off-reservation. In April, Suquamish donated $100,000 to the North Kitsap School District to help the district erase a $1.7 million budget shortfall for 2012-13. Chief Kitsap Academy opened in Septem-ber; students can take culturally-based classes and earn credit through Olympic College. The new Suquamish Museum opened in September on Suquamish Way, across the street from the Tribe’s adminis-tration offi ces.

We welcome upwards of 3,500 visitors to the center every year from all over the world. In addition to providing maps and information, we sell souvenirs, spirit gear from the local Kingston High School, fishing & hunting licenses and tickets to local venues and events.

Kingston is known for it’s Annual Three Day Fourth of July Celebration. Tiny Town Children’s Festival features infl atables, arts & crafts booths, games, dancing, etc. The 4th of July brings the longest running Parade west of the Mississippi. There is live music, beer gardens, food vendors, marathons, ball races, the list goes on and on.

Port Gamble is set along the scenic shores of Hood Canal and Gamble

Bay, a mile east of the fl oating bridge on Highway 104, or eight miles west of the Kingston Ferry terminal. Port Gamble is a privately owned National Historic Landmark District and is the jewel on the Kitsap Peninsula.

Port Gamble was named in 1841 by surveyor Charles Wilkes in honor of Lt. Robert Gamble, who was wounded in the War of 1812 sea battle between the US Frigate President and the British Belvidere. Port Gamble was briefl y known in its for-mative days of 1853 as Teekalet, Indian for “brightness of the noon-day sun.”

The 120-acre site was founded in 1853 by Puget Mill Company (later named Pope & Talbot) as a home for mill workers and their families and was one of the premier mill towns in Puget Sound. It was the oldest continuously operating mill towns in North America before it closed in 1995 after 142 years.

The town is a popular day trip, wed-ding destination, and meeting and event venue. It is also a great destination for residents of neighboring Jefferson, Ma-

son, Pierce, King and Snohomish counties, especially during the summer when events (both large and small) take place almost every weekend, from a Medieval Faire to a Log-ging Show. Other events include Old Mill Days and For-est Festival, Ghost Conference, Fiber and Fabrics Festival, Ghost Walks, Mari-time Music Festival, Historic Walking tours, many running and biking events, the annual Fruitcake Contest and an old-fashioned Country Christmas, which help the town draw visitors’ year around.

The Port Gamble Theater re-opened to live stage performances after 60 years, come see the Port Gamble Theater Company as they and others perform throughout the year. The theater area was renovated and still keeps the old style feel from years ago.

Boutiques offer local and regional fi ne arts, hand crafted gifts from around the world, restaurant, books, espresso, fi ber arts and weaving, spa treatments, high tea, BBQ, kayak rentals, fabric and quilts and of course the feel of an old general store.

The New England style town fea-tures turn-of - the-centur y bui ld-ings, a historic church, picturesque grounds and a historic museum filled with artifacts and replicas from the town’s mill days. Elms and Maples line the town’s street – painting the area with hues of gold, orange and red in the autumn.

Suquamish, a community located on the Port Madison Indian Reservation, just a few miles south of Kingston, is home to

the Suquamish Tribe, a sovereign nation. The name Suquamish originated from the Tribe’s winter village site called “d’suq’wub,” which means “place of clear salt water.” Suquamish is easily reached by highway and is near the Bainbridge Island and Kingston ferry docks. Suquamish was once a vacation get-away with small weekend fi shing cabins along the waterfront. Today, the community is composed of privately-owned and tribal-trust property.

Chief Seattle, a powerful Native leader of the northwest, is buried at the Suquamish Memorial Cemetery. The City of Seattle is named for him. Chief Seattle, a great orator and peacekeeper, was instrumental in preserving the culture of the Suquamish people after the treaty negotiations in the 1850s. Chief Seattle expressed his people’s relationship with the earth when he delivered a now famous speech during the treaty ac-cords. This historic speech, additional history, and exhibits of Suquamish, the Suquamish Tribe, and the Port Madison Indian Reservation can be found at the Suquamish Museum.

The community of Suquamish, in the center of which stands their new community center, the House of Awakened Culture, is home to some of Kitsap Peninsula’s most eye-catching views. The area looks across Puget Sound to the City of Seattle, the Cascade Mountain range, and south to Mount Rainier. Nearby, tourists can visit Grover’s Creek Fish Hatchery, the Suquamish Museum, Old Man House Park, the veterans’ memorial, and Chief Seattle’s gravesite.

Today, the Suquamish Tribe operates the Suquamish Clear-water Casino and Resort, with Vegas-style gaming, world-class entertainment and resort hotel accommodations and spa. The casino includes three dining options. A free shuttle operates be-tween the casino and the ferry landings at Kingston and Bainbridge, with shuttle services to Silverdale and Bremerton.

In July 2009, the Suquamish com-munity hosted the Canoe Journey — cel-ebrating the 20th anniversary of the 1989 event which occurred from Suquamish to Seattle to celebrate Washington state’s Centennial — with food and dance, mu-sic and sharing between Tribes from all over the coastal Northwest. Since 1993, when the Bella Bella people challenged

the Canoe Nations to paddle to their shores, the Canoe Journey has been an annual event with stops up and down the coast.

In mid-August, Suquamish hosts Tribal Nations from all over the United States and Canada when it celebrates Chief Seattle Days. This three-day celebration is open to everyone. The event features a powwow and various games and contests. Canoe races for children and adults celebrate the coastal peoples’ relationship with the water. Food and art vendors bring in traditional products for sale.

PORT GAMBLE S’KLALLAM TRIBE

The Port Gamble S’Klallam Reservation is located on the northern tip of the

Kitsap Peninsula in Washington State. It is adjacent to Port Gamble Bay, one of the most stunning scenic waterways in the area that has provided a cultural outlet and sustenance to the Port Gamble S’Klallam people for more than 1,000 years. Many of the Tribe’s more than 1,150 members depend on the bay either for personal use or commercial fi shing and shellfi shing.

Originally known as the Nux Sklai Yem or the Strong People, the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe are descendants of the Salish people who have been well established in the Puget Sound basin and surrounding areas since 2400 B.C. The Tribe’s original ancestral village was situated at what is known today as the town of Port Gamble, across Port Gamble Bay from Point Julia on the reservation. The S’Klallam were asked to relocate in 1853 to make way for the sawmill at the Port Gamble townsite.

Port Gamble S’Klallam is dedicated to maintaining the Tribe’s traditional way of life and is a steward for the environment. The Tribe’s is dedicated to returning Port Gamble Bay to its natural state of health. While the bay is resilient and is one of the last waterways of its kind open to shellfi sh harvesting in the Puget Sound, the Tribe

recognizes work needs to be done to make sure the bay remains healthy for future generations.

In addition to working with local, state and private organizations on a clean-up action plan, the Tribe acts as a watchdog against development projects that may affect the bay’s long-term health. It actively supports conservation efforts such as the Kitsap Forest & Bay Project, which aims to conserve as much as 7,000 acres of land and two miles of bay shoreline.

is known for its stunning wooded vistas and tranquil, picturesque water views. While

in Kitsap County, visit the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe’s carving center, which is located across from the Longhouse and government center on Little Boston Road. The carving center offers for sale traditional art crafted by master carvers.

POULSBO — Phil and Andrea Holt said they felt uneasy when the rain fell after the Nov. 19 storm caused a sewer main to overflow and flood their basement for the second time in five years.

PhilanthropyThe Port Gamble S’Klallam Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization

dedicated to improving the quality of life of tribal members while increasing the community’s understanding of the Tribe’s rich cultural heritage. Past projects have involved a successful capital campaign for the House of Knowledge, which included the fi rst Tribal Longhouse in over 100 years as well as an Elders Center and a new home for the Little Boston Library.

Outside the efforts of the Port Gamble S’Klallam Foundation, the Tribe also awards non-profi t and community organizations up to $2500 in grants twice a year, while The Point Casino holds an annual fundraising campaign to support a selected charitable partner. In 2011, more than $30,000 was raised for the American Diabetes Association.

HANSVILLEHANSVILLE

Located at the northernmost tip of the Kitsap Peninsula is the town of Hans-

ville, Washington. Just ten miles from Kingston, Hansville is home to the Point No Point Lighthouse, a Nature Conser-vancy Reserve, three county parks and an extensive forest and beach trail system. Originally, the area was referred to as Point No Point. In 1841 Commander Charles Wilkes of the US Exploring Expedition came upon a sandy spit, thinking it a point of land. Upon closer inspection, the spit was much smaller than it looked and there was no “point” to speak of. He named it Point No Point. As Seattle and Tacoma grew and marine traffi c increased, so did the occurrence of marine calamities,

making it neces-sary to construct light stations along Admiralty Inlet and Puget Sound. In 1879 construction was begun on the Point No Point Lighthouse and on January 1, 1880 it offi cially went into service.

About the same t ime, the area started to see the arrival of settlers, mostly Norwegian,

Swedish, and Finnish immigrants. Two Norwegian settlers Hans Zachariasen and Anton Husby ran a ferry service with their boats, from the steamers off shore to the beach, there being no dock built yet. As legend has it, Anton was a temperate man who would refuse to ferry anyone who had been imbibing. Upon learning that, one Scandinavian man remarked to his friend “Vell, how vill dey get ashore if Anton von’t ferry dem? “ “Oh don’t vorry”, said the friend, “If Anton von’t, Hans vill.” And thus the town is called Hansville.

There are a variety of reasons to visit the Hansville area. There are beaches, hiking trails, and an open light house.

Foulweather Bluff is a Nature Conser-vancy area famous for Bird Watching and beach combing. If you become hungry you can fi nd everything from a meal to an ice cream cone. And if you would like to spend a little extra time there is a bed and breakfast or the opportunity to stay at the Point-No-Point Light House in quarters that are a mere 30 feet from the beach.
