show and tell, sharing favourite items and family events with their classmates. Several of the curriculum learning outcomes are being met through this experience, including building a strong sense of identity and wellbeing, as well as learning to be e"ective communicators! Bad Attitudes Comes In Three Arenas!A bad attitude is a challenge to family life and frustrates many a parent. Furthermore, if children don’t learn how to deal with their attitude, they grow up to be adults with bad attitudes. One way to help children overcome a bad attitude is to help them deal with it in smaller pieces. Children are tempted to have a bad attitude in three prominent areas: when given an instruction, when corrected and when given a no answer. You might put a sign up in your kitchen listing those three areas with the heading, “Three opportunities for a good attitude.”

Take time to talk about attitude with your children. Discuss the importance and bene!ts of a good attitude. Help your children understand these three areas and even warn your child when one of them is coming. Coach your children to have a better response. The next time your child demonstrates a bad attitude, don’t just point out the negative but teach how to respond correctly. When given an instruction, a child might say, “Okay Mum,” in a pleasant tone of voice. When corrected, it would be helpful to say, “I’m sorry.” When receiving a no answer, children might say to themselves, “Okay, maybe another time.” A bad attitude is often a sign of an angry heart and the groaning, rolled eyes, sarcasm, stomping feet, or disgusted look are all attempts to communicate unhappiness with the situation. Gently point out these bad habits and help your children to practise better responses. Be careful of your own harshness in the process and look for ways to break the problem down into manageable pieces.

Strategy for the week: Actively teach your children how to think and make good choices when confronted with the three areas that can foster bad attitudes. When the attitude is unsatisfactory, take the opportunity to discuss this rationally with them and get them to come to the right conclusions as to what the best and God honouring attitude should be. Practise the better responses and, when appropriate, remind them of what was decided.

HeroesAfter reading this article, we may be

able to think of quite a few heroes that we know. People in our family, friendship group, church, neighbourhood and community can be heroes by the way they conduct themselves and the things they do for others on a daily or weekly basis. Perhaps they would be reluctant heroes if we said that to them, but they are heroes none the less.

Everyday Heroes EverywhereI was meandering around the internet the other day (kids,

don’t try this at home!) and happened to google the word hero.I saw information about a 2002 martial arts movie titled ‘Hero’, a Wikipedia entry on the concept of hero, various online dictionary de!nitions of hero and a link to Mariah Carey singing ‘Hero’.

I clicked on that one. I like the song – and I don’t mind watching Mariah Carey.

But that isn’t really what I was looking for. I was interested in !nding stories about contemporary heroes. So I googled the words ‘heroes for today’ and I found stories about the heroes of D-Day, a literary review of a new book about the heroes of the Alamo and a USA Today story about an “Avengers vs. X-Men” comic book. With all my heart I honour the heroes of D-Day and the Alamo, and I’m kind of interested in that comic book (are you kidding? Iron Man, Captain America, Wolverine and Colossus all together? Shazam!).

But that still wasn’t what I was looking for. So I went for a walk. As I stepped outside I waved at my neighbor Creig, who was cleaning out his gear for what he told me is his 12th year at scout summer camp.

“Twelve years!” I said, trying to wrap my mind around the total cost to Creig in terms of vacation days, corny skits, #ag ceremonies, tin foil dinners and s’mores. “I can’t even imagine doing that. You’re my hero!”

I thought about that as I walked away and headed down the street. It occurred to me that maybe I had been looking for heroes in the wrong place. Maybe they’re not on google. Maybe they’re on the street. Creig is certainly one. And so is Dave, who lives two doors down and who just got back from spending two weeks in Guatemala with a group that provides medical and dental services to the poor and needy. This is like the !fth or sixth time he’s made a humanitarian trip like that. That’s pretty heroic, isn’t it?

As I continued walking around the neighbourhood I discovered that I am surrounded by heroes. As I walked past the Chen home I was reminded of how they left good jobs in China to immigrate to America because they were concerned for the future well-being of their children. Then I walked past Janet’s house and remembered how she brings many of the ladies in the neighborhood together each week to tie quilts,

which are then donated to charity. She’s responsible for thousands of quilts being donated, which means there are likely thousands of people out there who will sleep warmer tonight because of Janet.

Suddenly it seemed to me that there were heroes everywhere I walked: Alan, who sits in the back of his church each week and interprets the services for a little girl who is hearing impaired; Bruce, who is always there when a neighbour’s car needs to be repaired or garage door needs to be !xed; Daniel, a brilliant young man who spends several hours each week playing, dancing, singing and colouring with a group of mentally disabled teenagers; Ginger, whose response to being deserted by her husband of 30 years is to return to college at age 50 to get a degree that will help her control her own destiny.

Brave? Absolutely!

Courageous? No doubt!

And heroic? Do you really need to ask?

Take a walk around your neighbourhood and see if the same thing isn’t true for you where you live. There are everyday heroes everywhere lifting burdens, lightening loads and looking overwhelming adversity squarely in the eye – and spitting. Their names may not show up in a search of the online world, but these folks do show up where it counts: in the home, the neighbourhood and the community, making the real world a better place.

High School Regional Athletics Carnival

Last Tuesday and Wednesday 16 high school students battled it out against the top student athletes from schools all around the South Coast region. We were so impressed with the sportsman-ship displayed by our King’s students. The students came away with some fantastic results. We had six students qualify to com-pete at the State Athletics Championships at the end of October in Brisbane, with a number of other students narrowly missing the qualifying benchmark by a matter of centimetres.

Congratulations to the following six students who made it through to state:

* Loren London (100m, 200m, 90m hurdles, triple jump, long jump)

Outstanding Achievements

Hockey stars in primary continue to shine!

Cameron Fraser-Buchanan and Jack Castles both in 7M have had an outstanding year in hockey, representing King’s at state level, but have also had great success at club level, both playing hockey for Burleigh Hockey Club. They were selected to repre-sent their club at state trials in Warwick - 25-29 June. Jack played for the !rst team and Cameron for the second team! Cameron was given ‘man of match’ for one of his games on 27 June!

Their club team U13 boys - have only lost one game all season and played in the grand !nal last weekend. Their team played ex-tremely well to win the !nal 7-0!

We are extremely proud of the boys and would like to acknowl-edge their fantastic achievements in the sport. For Cameron, this is only his second year playing hockey!!!

Help Support Miss Grady

Come and join us as we Race for Hope at beautiful South Burleigh Headlands. We’re going to put a King’s team in and you can choose to do either a 3km or 5km run/walk. You can also bring your family! This is the perfect time to get back into running as our cross country training is about to restart.

Miss Grady is moving to Uganda at the end of the year and this event is for her charity 100% hOPE to raise money to build a secondary school in Uganda. This is a great opportunity to race while also raising money to help the kids in Uganda.
