One Hundred Years by Grace and Still Growing-A History of Kingo Lutheran Church

Anniversaries bring many things to mind. There are the rich memories of an appreciated past. There are the living hopes of an anticipated future. Many streams flow together to form the life of a congregation of Christ, and no single symbol is sufficient to express everything that could be said. At best, a few milestones can be lifted up, examined, and treasured.

It all began with a desire to be church, together. On October 1, 1909, a meeting was called to organize a Danish Lutheran Society in Milwaukee. Forty keenly- interested persons were in attendance. Rev. N. J, Bing, then the president of the Wisconsin District of the United Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church, was present at this meeting. Committees were chosen to draw up a constitution and find a location for a meeting place.

At the next congregational meeting, held on October 8, 1909 in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Behrens, the church was officially declared

organized. The names of the first people to serve on the church council reflect the Danish background: Peterson, Hansen, Jensen, Christiansen and Peatschow. The first president of the congregation was Martin Andersen, older brother of Esther Schaak, a long time member of the church. Their sister, Adonna, was the first catechumen to be confirmed in the congregation.

This young congregation began holding worship services with a part-time pastor, the Rev. Carl M. Olsen, from the Danish church in Hartland. He made this long

commute to serve this church for four years. Worship occurred in rented quarters at a weekly rate of one dollar.

In 1910, the congregation applied for membership in the United Danish Evangelical Lutheran Synod and was accepted. The congregation then purchased a lot at 25th and Sycamore Streets, and commenced plans to build a place of worship. However, a church building on the corner of Hubbard and Meinecke Streets became available at a very low price. It had previously been a Congregationalist church. The congregation decided to purchase it. They borrowed $3,000 at 5% interest to finance the transaction. After purchase, it was extensively remodeled with the help of the many church committees.

On Sunday, April 2, 1911, our first location was dedicated. Three services of dedication were held, presided over by three visiting clergy. Dinner and supper were served in the church basement.

In preparation for the occasion, the Ladies’ Aid and Luther League of the new congregation assisted the building committee in the painting and decoration of the church. These organizations continued their support of Kingo. From its inception, the Ladies’ Aid was a strong and vibrant organization. The women gave generously, for not only current expenses and improvements to the church building, but also for charitable gifts to the needy. Their programs focused on the human spiritual needs and

afforded many opportunities for service to others. The Luther League paid the gas and water bills of the congregation for nine years.

Mrs. C H. Jensen (mother of Ruth and Dorothy Jensen) organized a Women’s Missionary Society. Its evening meetings were well attended. Dedicated work and support were accomplished for the workers in the mission fields of the Synod.

In 1914, the first full time pastor was called, the Rev. J. C. Christensen. The church began to use English more frequently in both the morning and the evening services. The Luther League purchased English hymnals for the congregation’s use, but Danish continued to be the primary language for worship.

Rev. K.M. Matthiesen became our third pastor in 1917. In 1921, Pastor Matthiesen

accepted a call to Waupaca and the Rev. Thomas Tychsen became the next pastor. He served from 1922 to 1927. He was

instrumental in organizing the first full choir. There had been a men’s and a ladies’ chorus, but the new group was to be a mixed choir. Under the capable direction of Mr. Christian Jessen, this choir was very successful and continued for many years to enhance the dignity and beauty of the worship services. During these early years, a number of serious problems beset the young

Page 5

congregation, and even threatened its survival. Declining membership, increasing debts, and loss of key members of the congregation all contributed to a doubtful situation. The continuing use of Danish in worship proved to be a significant barrier to growth. Many prospective members from the surrounding community came from other ethnic traditions and did not speak or understand Danish. In addition, as a result of World War I, there was a general mistrust in the country of anything European. The congregation was also deeply affected by the growing economic troubles of the 1920s, trouble that would plunge the nation into the Great Depression. Membership declined and debts mounted.

Upon the resignation of Pastor Tychsen in the autumn of 1927, steps were taken to secure a new minister. It was only after much effort and with the passage of considerable time that the congregation was able to secure a person with the ability and courage to lead them out of their difficulties. A call was extended to the Rev. C. M. Hansen, at the time serving a flourishing church in Iowa. Pastor Hansen indicated he would accept the call on the

conditions that English be used in

worship, and that the congregation change its name to one acceptable to an English speaking community. The congregation agreed to these conditions, and the church was named Kingo Evangelical Lutheran Church in 1928. In so doing, the Danish heritage was preserved in honoring Danish bishop and hymnodist Thomas Hansen Kingo, and at the same time the congregation

indicated its openness to all Lutherans, whether of Danish heritage or not. Following Pastor Hansen’s arrival, a period of significant growth in membership took place.

Because of the difficult economic conditions brought on by the Depression, the financial affairs of the congregation required careful planning. Allowances were made for unemployment and several members paid their own support to the church in janitorial services. The Pastor’s family lived in a small apartment over the church, and he returned 10% of his salary back to the church.

Many of the children who came to the Sunday School were of diverse nationalities. They came from unchurched homes and had received little or no religious training. The congregation was thankful that these children were receiving the good news of God’s love. Due to the efforts of Mr. J. Fred Jensen, Sunday School superintendent, there was a gratifying growth in the Sunday School program. Mr. Jensen served very faithfully for many years. The present Kingo Church library is named in his honor.

Other church organizations came into existence during Pastor Hansen’s tenure. A Lutheran Brotherhood chapter was organized to promote interest among men in both the spiritual and social work of the church. Both a Senior and Junior League were developed for Christian fellowship and Bible study among the young people and teenagers. The choir continued to grow in numbers. Kingo Lutheran Church flourished at Hubbard and Meinecke.

Pastor Lawrence Siersbeck came to serve Kingo in 1936. After two years, he returned to his alma mater, Dana College, as its President.

About this time, Professor Herman Geske appeared on the Kingo scene. He was a very special friend to the Kingo

people. With a theological background, he could rise to Kingo’s call and need, and on short notice lead the services on any given Sunday morning. He spoke to the various organizations of the church with a ready wit that all enjoyed.

In 1938, Pastor C Scriver Kloth came to tend the Kingo flock. He served during the menacing years of World War II, guiding a growing congregation through the arduous heartbreak of a war fought across two oceans.

During the 1940s, the relocation of Kingo Lutheran Church became a pressing question. With an aging building and three other Lutheran congregations within blocks of Kingo, the congregation wondered whether it could continue at Hubbard and Meinecke. The congregation was encouraged by their bishop to look eastward for a new location where the city did not yet have a Lutheran church. A building fund was established in 1944, and in 1945, a lot was purchased in Shorewood at the corner of Wilson Drive and Olive Street at a price of $6,200.

In 1948, architects’ drawings for a church building and parish hall were approved, and a fund drive was held. The following year, Pastor Kloth left Kingo, and the Rev. E. A. Neve succeeded him, who served the congregation during the difficult years of building. For a period

during this time, the congregation worshipped at a neighborhood church building, as the old church building was sold in 1949 and the new building was not ready. In 1950, because of insufficient funds, Kingo decided to lay aside the original building plans, and to construct simply a chapel. This building was sufficiently completed so it could be used for services on Easter

Sunday, March 25, 1951.Finishing touches to the building and grounds were done by members of the congregation. By the fall of 1951, the chapel’s cost of $37,000 was fully paid, and a three-day dedication festivity was held, beginning October 21. The Rev Hans C. Jersild, President of the United Evangelical Lutheran Church, officiated at the worship service.

Pastor Neve accepted another call in 1952 and bid farewell to Kingo. For a number of months, Pastor Harley Swiggum served as interim pastor. He commuted regularly from Decorah, Iowa and lived in the homes of Kingo people.

Due to rapid growth of the congregation, the chapel

quickly reached its full capacities. Worship attendance had increased to where it became necessary to hold two Sunday services. Sunday School

facilities were also inadequate. Space in the Fellowship Hall could not accommodate the various church functions, so it was decided to build a larger church.

In 1953, Pastor Robert Berthelsen accepted the call to come to Kingo. He spent nine years with the congregation. These were more years of growth and dedication. During this time, we built the $150,000 structure that was the “larger church”, dreamed about and planned for so many years. At the dedication, Pastor Berthelsen noted that, “We are mindful that this edifice presents us with new opportunities, new responsibilities, and

new problems”.

The people of Kingo were mindful of this challenge, but their hearts were filled with joy and gratitude to God for the time, the labors, and the talents that helped them reach this milestone in the history of Kingo congregation. The dedication of the new building was held through an entire week with Fellowship Hours, an open house and receptions. The formal dedication came on February 9, 1958, beginning with two morning worship services in the Chapel. The Dedication Service of the new sanctuary took place at 3:30 PM in the afternoon. Dr. William Larson, President of the United

Evangelical Lutheran Church, officiated. Six pastors who had earlier served the congregation were invited to participate and help

celebrate to occasion. Present were Pastors Matthiesen, Hansen, Siersbeck, Kloth, Neve, and Swiggum. The pastors entered the Chancel carrying the Holy Bible and sacramental vessels , as the congregation sang, “The Church’s One Foundation.” Before the formal words of the dedication, each visiting Pastor read the admonitions and promises of God from His Word. Under the direction of Miss Renata Laukandt, the choir sang, “Built on a Rock.” Russell Wasrud was the organist. The dedication supper was served in the Fellowship Hall of the new church.

The years of Pastor Berthelsen’s service were busy ones for the congregation, with many activities and opportunities for

Christian fellowship and service. There was an annual Smorgasbord, a Mr. and Mrs. Club, the Ladies’ Aid, and the Kingo Brotherhood. Luther

League, scouting activities and bible Camp at Shadow Lake were available for young people. In 1960, the merger of a number of synods came to completion in the constituting convention of the American Lutheran Church.

A very significant event in the life of Kingo came near the end of pastor Berthesen’s tenure. The Prayer Chain began its good service to the congregation in 1962. Under the leadership of Vi Thiele, it has continued to be a source of blessing for the members of the congregation and countless others.

In 1962, Pastor Berthelsen accepted a call to Lincoln, Nebraska, and once more, the Kingo congregation was in need of a pastor. Kingo was blessed at this time to have in its midst the Rev. Thomas Collin. Pastor Collin assumed the roll of interim pastor in the spring of 1962, and served until late summer of that year, when the Rev. Warren K Sigwalt came to serve Kingo. Pastor Sigwalt led Kingo through another time of vigorous change, sometimes tumultuous, always challenging. He excelled in preaching and

introduced us to high-liturgical worship. The Chicago Folk Mass was introduced and brought a modern energy to worship. It was during this period that the “Vigil of Prayer” began, in which Kingo people came to the church for an hour of prayer throughout the entirety of Holy Week. This remains a strong part of the congregation’s devotional life. Pastor Sigwalt led an “Oberammergau Safari” of forty people to Europe. Many of that number were from Kingo. Pastor Sigwalt often presented a fine program at other churches and groups with his unusual

collection of crosses, “On the Other Side of the Cross.” We observed the 60th Anniversary of the church during his tenure.

In 1963, our Kingo logo was created by Jean Moberg. It incorporates a chi-rho with symbols representing Bishop Kingo and our love of music. It continues to grace our stationery, Kingo Call newsletter and even our outdoor sign.

In 1969, our long-term renter, Whitefish Bay- Shorewood Preschool, began using Kingo for its program. Today, they continue to provide care and education to community children, operating out of our Fellowship Hall.

Pastor Sigwalt left Kingo in 1970. Once more, Pastor Collin served the church as its interim pastor. In 1971, Pastor William Gary Kobs accepted the call to come and lead the Kingo congregation.

Under Pastor Kobs’ leadership, Kingo continued to grow and respond to the changes of the times. Steeped in the Danish heritage of fine worship and music, Kingo came to be known as a congregation with a very rich and bold liturgical heritage. The Eucharist was now celebrated at worship every Sunday. A wide variety of skillfully made vestments and paraments were created by members of the congregation, under the guidance of the Fine Arts Committee. The Lutheran Book of Worship was introduced and became the chief resource for the liturgy. At the heart of it all were the people, active in planning, leading and enjoying worship in the presence of God.

Much was accomplished in the education ministry of the church. The Bethel Series, created by former interim Pastor Harley Swiggum, was

Page 13

made available to the congregation as a means to achieve a better understanding of the Scriptures. The rite of Confirmation and the first reception of Holy Communion were separated, permitting younger children to share in our Lord’s Supper.

The Kingo Quilters begin making quilts for the needy in the early 70s. Today, the quilters create around 200 quilts per year. They have been distributed to Lutheran World Relief, area social service organizations and Froedtert Hospital’s hospice program.

Fellowship and service continued as strong elements of Kingo’s ministry. A strong feeling of family grew in the congregation, and with it, a desire to serve the community. Kingo people were very active in the Vietnamese and Laotian resettlement program, carried out in cooperation with other North Shore churches.

During Pastor Kobs’ tenure, the mortgage on the church was burned, and an ad hoc building committee began work on changes in the chapel building, the addition of a lounge and office area, and the creation of further Sunday School rooms. The Zimmer Memorial Organ was also purchased at this time. This work was completed and accomplished, bringing the building exterior to its present form. A dedication was celebrated on October 8, 1978.

In 1979, a study began for a new organization of the congregation. The keynote of the plan was Jesus’ great commission, “Go therefore and make disciples!” Under the plan, lay persons would take heavy responsibility for the administration and implementation of the plans of the congregation, freeing the pastor for the distinctly pastoral tasks of teaching, preaching, and counseling. Known as the Abdon model, this plan was adopted. It encouraged the involvement of many in Kingo’s ministry.

In 1981, Pastor Kobs left Kingo to accept a call as senior pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church in Madison, Wisconsin. Once again, Kingo was blessed to have in its membership pastors willing to service in the interim period. Pastor Richard Eyer, chaplain at Columbia Hospital, assumed the role for a number of months. He was succeeded by Pastor Robert Thays, chaplain at de Paul Hospital.

In the summer of 1981, Rev. John E. Ruppenthal came to tend the Kingo flock as its pastor. He was an avid reader and enjoyed teaching, and the people benefitted from his classes. His sermons frequently discussed the nature of grace. In 1981, Kingo began partnerships with Hephatha and All Peoples Churches.

Over the years, the names of groups changed but the dedication to service and fellowship remained the same. The Ladies’ Aid became the Kingo Lutheran Church Women, and the women gathered in circles

for study, fellowship and service. The Brotherhood no longer existed, but the men gather on Saturday morning for Bible Study and mutual support.

The Luther League became the F.O.O.L.S. (Followers of Our Lord and Savior). The Book Club began meeting in 1984 and continues today.

We celebrated our 75th anniversary with worship and a banquet. We donated the thank-offering collected to new social service programs being developed by Lutheran Social Services. In 1986, our beautiful baptismal font was completed by a number of gifted members. In 1988, Kingo became part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Pastor Ruppenthal resigned and Pastor Thays again served as our interim.

In May of 1988, Rev. Susan Miller became our pastor. The congregation and Sunday School experienced a period of growth and vitality. She emphasized the church as a community and was skilled in her knowledge of people. Christmas programs by the Sunday School students were always wonderful pageants of song and story. During the 1980s and 1990s, Kingo members served at Bread of Life food program at Reformation Lutheran Church., taking responsibility for one evening’s meal for the needy each month for many years. We also participated in Habitat for Humanity programs and Project RETURN (a ministry that helps ex-offenders return to the community successfully).

In 1991, members began discussion and visioning for an upgrade of the building. The chapel building had a leaking foundation, causing mold issues in the basement. The Sunday School wing (formerly the chapel building) needed more meeting rooms and updating of the rooms. The front porch was crumbling. It took several years for the final plans and their execution to come to completion.

Page 16

Pastor Miller resigned from her duties at Kingo as of November, 1991 so she could follow her husband as he transferred to a job out of state. Pastor Paul Ihlenfeld served as our interim. It was such a positive experience for him that he decided to re-enter full-time parish ministry after completing the interim at Kingo, and he accepted a call at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Hartland.

Rev. Dan Powell became pastor in September 1992 and resigned in May 1993. In his short time at Kingo, he captured the hearts of our young people with his youth and energy. After Pastor Powell’s brief call, Pastor Ken Wheeler served as our interim.

In 1989, the congregation considered adding a stained glass panel to the area over the main narthex doors. Renderings of a beautiful design- Jesus Triumphant- were submitted by Conrad Schmidt Studios. After learning that the total cost would be over $100,000, the congregation felt church funds would be better used to do mission work. A church member, Debby Hughes, obtained permission to use the

design and organized a number of women in the church to recreate the design as a quilt. It was finished in time to be hung for Easter morning, 1993.

In 1994, Rev. David Zellmer became pastor. A new front porch and outdoor sign were dedicated. The cross on the sign was designed and made by then-member Norm Christianson. We celebrated our 85th anniversary at Our Savior Lutheran in Hartland, the church that evolved from the Danish Lutheran church that shared its pastor with us 85 years previously to get us started.

In 1995, a $360,000 building fund drive began. With such a large project to improve our own building, many members of Kingo felt the need to reach out to others as well. We pledged a 10% tithe of the funds to establish the Mwangaza Centre in Tanzania and provide carpeting for Hephatha Church. The first stage of renovation, the work on our Fellowship Hall, was completed.

In July 1996, the Mwangaza Center was dedicated. Its work began with training school teachers for the people of Tanzania. Over the years, the program expanded to also teach health care workers. To date, over a thousand people have received training through Mwangaza Center, impacting over 30,000 students.

A parish nurse was added to Kingo’s ministry in 1996 and shared with Hephatha Church. Staffed by Louise Meyer, the program’s goal was to help members in times of medical need and provide education. Initially part-time, the program expanded over several years to a full time position. The portion of the ministry that served Kingo eventually ended, but we continue to support financially and spiritually that occurs at Hephatha. Financial responsibility for the program is now shared with several Milwaukee-area congregations.

In the summer of 1995, we experimented with alternate worship times. We tried Thursday evening and then Saturday evening worship. The Saturday worship became so popular that it was held year-round and continues today.

In 1997, Pastor and Kris Zellmer were part of a delegation from the Greater Milwaukee Synod that visited the Mwangaza Center.

Variety and flexibility in worship style continued with the introduction of supplemental hymnals- With One Voice and Worship and Praise. In 1996 and 1997, Kingo briefly enjoyed a Motion Choir in worship, which performed liturgical dance to enhance the worship experience under the leadership of Gail McArdle. A mid-week Taize service took place few several years.

With much of the labor for demolition and finish work provided by Kingo members, the major renovation and remodeling of Kingo’s church structures were completed and dedicated in 1998. Bishop Rogness of the Greater Milwaukee Synod and Bishop Akyoo of the Meru Synod of Tanzania presided at worship. After the renovation was completed, we opened our doors to allow use of the new space by numerous community groups, including AA, parenting, Lamaze and scout groups.

Kingo entered the electronic era in 1999 with our first website. Our prayer chain had already added an email component in 1996. Rev Robert Thays became Associate Pastor of Spiritual Growth, using his knowledge of other faith practices and his love of the outdoors to awaken our faith lives in new ways and new locations.

A tutoring program began in 2000, with members of Kingo helping students from our partner church, Hephatha. Some members of Kingo had been involved with tutoring for these students through their school, Hopkins Elementary, since 1996. Now we had the program based right at

Page 19

Kingo, which included a devotion time and supper. We also helped our Hephatha students by filling backpacks each fall with needed school supplies.

The early 2000s was a time of strong youth involvement at Kingo. Youth attended the churchwide youth assembly, participated in Spoke Folk (a youth ministry on bikes) and yearly performances from the Christian youth bands Captive Free and The Road. The Koinonia (Greek for community) group formed for fellowship among our 20 and 30-something age members.

After nine years of service to Kingo, Pastor Zellmer left in November of 2001. Pastor Thays once again filled the pulpit as our interim pastor.

In August of 2002, Rev. Diane Olson became our pastor. Pastor Olson helped raise congregational awareness of social needs in our community, both locally and worldwide. Kingo joined other congregations in supporting the Mt. Meru Coffee Project to sell fair trade coffee. In 2002, two Somali-Bantu families were settled into housing through the combined efforts of Kingo, Hephatha and Bayshore congregations. In 2005, a group of ten people, led by Pastor Bob Thays with Pastor Olson and three members of Kingo, climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, visited the Mwangaza Center and Nyang’oma, Kenya (Pastor Olson’s previous Peace Corps site).

During this time, Kingo undertook an intensive examination of ourselves. Like many congregations, we had slowly been shrinking for many years and needed to reevaluate our future. We worked on reconnecting with our own identity and with God’s mission for Kingo in the world.

Page 20

Pastor Diane Olson

Our Sunday School began a new tradition of a Lenten stewardship challenge. Mini M&M tubes were filled with quarters (and checks) and the funds donated to reduce world hunger, purchase farm animals, and most recently provide clean water to people around the world in need.

Margaret Schoewe, lifelong member of Kingo, was ordained at Kingo in 2006 as a pastor of the ELCA and installed as part-time pastor at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Wauwatosa.

We burned the mortgage from the 1990s renovation project in 2006 and were again free of outstanding debts.

In February of 2007, Pastor Olsen resigned as pastor. Rev Carol Hegland became Kingo’s interim pastor. As part of our search for a new pastor, a MET (Mission Exploration Team) discussed and prayed about our mission and ministry. We learned even more about ourselves as a congregation: past sorrows, present needs and future hopes. We also developed a covenant for serving together in God’s love.

After being a member of Kingo for many years and serving us in many ways (interims, supply, spiritual growth), Pastor Bob Thays accepted his own call to Zion Lutheran Church in Ashippun, Wisconsin in October of 2007.

In 2007, a redesigned and renovated outdoor sign was dedicated. Renata Laukandt celebrated her 100th birthday. The “cranberry” hymnal (Evangelical Lutheran Worship) replaced the “green” hymnal.

Our current pastor, Rev. Wendy Wirth-Brock accepted the call to Kingo and began ministry here on December 1, 2008. Her sermons inspire us each week, connecting our faith with our daily lives and with the world. We undertook an “asset mapping” to evaluate the strengths of each member and develop new ways of working together in ministry. A number of new outreach projects emerged and have begun to operate. We are excited to see results that will emerge from these new ministries as well as Pastor Wirth-Brock’s presence with us in the

years to come.

And so we come to our 100th anniversary. We are still a people who desire to be church, together. Pastor Powell once described us as: “We are a community of faith who live by faith and commitment, seeking to follow the call of Christ to grace and hope”. That is Kingo, thankful to be in God’s hands and God’s witness in the world. We have been blessed to work together, play together, worship together and pray together for 100 years.

No one knows what the future may hold for Kingo. There have been struggles in the past, and there will be struggles in the future. God does not promise us a future without struggle, only that He is with us always, throughout all. We know that God has great plans for Kingo’s future. When God calls, the people of Kingo will be there to answer, “Send me”. Hallelujah!

Pastors from Kingo

Kingo has not only been faithfully served by pastors of the church, but has also been the home church of pastors for the church. To date, three sons and two daughters of the congregation have entered the ministry after growing up at Kingo.

The Rev. Carl August Nelson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Chris Nelson, was confirmed at Kingo in 1913. He was a graduate of Luther Seminary, and ordained in 1928. He served the Church in Iowa.

The Rev. Walter O. Ludwigsen was well known to many members of Kingo. He was both baptized and confirmed in the congregation.
