THE SILVER TRUMPET NEWSLETTER “St. Paul’s Lutheran, Siloa Lutheran, and First Lutheran are members of the
Northern Great Lakes Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America”
We have come to an exciting part of both the church year and our calendar year. The leaves have fallen, the temperature has dropped and there’s that certain feeling in the air that tells you what’s coming. The sights, sounds and even smells all around us provide an additional emphasis that is unique to this time of year. We know that in a few short weeks we will be celebrating Christmas! And in that busy time between now and then, both children and adults will be filled with anticipation for the holiday. For some, the time will seem to move slowly as we count the days thinking it will never get here, while others will wonder where the time went to as they fly through the day trying to get everything done on their unending list.
And for the church, there is even more excitement and anticipation. We’ve even built a season of the church around it—Advent. If you want to break it down to a basic definition, Advent is a season observed in many Western Christian churches as a time of expectant waiting and preparation for the celebration of the Nativity of Jesus at Christmas. The term is an anglicized version of the Latin word adventus, which means "coming". As a definition, it works, but to me it seems a little dry and devoid of any excitement. Yes, Advent is a time of expectant waiting and preparation, but what are we really waiting for? Is it all the Christmas specials on TV? Is it a blessed end to all the Thanksgiving leftovers? Just what or who is coming?
If you say that Santa Claus is coming to town, we just might have to have a little talk. But if you say Jesus, you are of course correct, but just like our definition it’s a simple answer that really doesn’t explain the reason for our excitement and anticipation.
One of the things that brings out the excitement of the season is the music. Both the traditional hymns that we’re all familiar with and songs from newer artists can fill our hearts with that very excitement that makes this season what it is. Music can touch our hearts, fill us with joy and at times, help us to find the words to help us express it. One such song is from a group called Point of Grace and in the chorus of that song we can find the reason for the excitement, for the anticipation that goes beyond our human definitions and factual answers.
Close your eyes and share the dream That everyone on Earth believe
A Child was born, the stars shown bright And love came down at Christmas time
And there we have it—the reason for such excitement. We prepare for the coming of God’s love wrapped in the simple, vulnerable flesh of humanity; the power that created heaven and earth born into the same frail weakness that defines all of us. The God that seemed so far away was now held in the arms of a human mother, Emmanuel—God with us. And all of it done out of love; not just a love of creation in general, but a love for each individual life that ever has or ever will exist.
I pray that as we gather together in celebration over the next few weeks that we remember the ultimate
love that brings us together and is there for us whether we are in a large group of people or in a crowd of
one. Now isn’t that something to get excited about?

Blessings to you all on your special day and all the year through!
What Does An Angel Look Like? Angels come in all shapes and sizes; all ages and skin
types. For example, the little old lady who returned
your lost purse last week. They come disguised as
enemies, teachers, students, even fools. Like the taxi
driver who told you that your eyes light up the world,
when you smile. They don't take life too seriously,
they travel light. Remember the small child
who showed you the wonder in simple
things. An angel leaves no forwarding
address, and they ask nothing in return.
Like the poor man who offered to share his
lunch with you. Like the rich man who showed you that
it really is all possible, if only you believe. Remember
the stranger who just happened to come along, when
you had lost your way. Think back to the friend who
touched your heart, when you didn't think you had one.
Some cherubs have freckles, some have dimples, think
of some with wrinkles, some without. They are hard to
find when your eyes are closed, but when you choose
to see, angels are everywhere you look.
So, open your eyes and remember to count all your
angels; for truly, you are blessed.

Long ago on Christmas Eve a little girl knelt to pray,
Beside the manger, at the chapel where Jesus’ gifts were on display.
She looked so sad, without a gift
to honor the newborn King. Just then, an Angel appeared and said,
“I have a gift for you to bring.”
She gathered an armful of leaves as the Angel told her to do,
Lo and behold, before her eyes the leaves turned to a reddish hue!
Now each year at Christmastime Poinsettias bloom everywhere,
Known as the “Flower of the Holy Night,” the miracle... from one small prayer!
Alter Flowers If you wish to donate altar flowers for
St. Paul’s services during the Christmas season, there are forms located in the narthex and forms will be inserted into
bulletins closer to the season. Please deliver them by Dec. 21

SILOA LUTHERAN CHURCH WOMEN 2016
Greetings to all the Women of our Northern Lights Parish: Driving home from Marshfield, Wisconsin, on Thanksgiving Day was very pretty. All the towns have their Christmas decorations up and the traffic was heavy. A few people were having dinner at McDonald’s as Jeannie and I were ordering breakfast in the afternoon. The Marshfield Clinic fare had been very bland with no protein. We’ll need to know if you are coming to the Christmas Party at 6:00 PM, Thursday, December 1st. Call me at 884-4275 if you haven’t signed up. We’ll have a chicken dinner and the cost is $10.00 per person. Hope to see you there. Mitten trees in our churches should be loaded with warm stuff for our needy kids; they may have been picked up already. The Food Pantry boxes are full and they will also be gone by party time. Our congregations and friends are very generous. My jaw surgery has been re-scheduled for December 14th and I hope I will feel well enough to participate in the services planned for December. The variety of celebrating The Longest Night as well as Christmas Eve (twice!) and Christmas Day should provide some-thing for everyone. Try to attend all of them. January will be busy with Annual Meetings. My heart is full of gratitude for all the warmth and friendship, for hands ready to pitch in when anything needs doing, and for a generosity of purse and spirit so graciously shared. Wishing you a Blessed Christmas. Ellie

Just before Christmas God was looking down at Earth and saw all of the evil that was going on. He decided to send an angel down to Earth to check it out. So He called one of His best angels and sent the angel to Earth for a time. When she returned she told God, yes it is bad on Earth, 95% is bad and 5% is good.
Well, He thought for a moment and said, maybe I had better send down a second angel to get another point of view. So God called another angel and sent her to Earth for a time too. When the angel returned she went to God and told Him yes, the Earth was in de-cline, 95% was bad and 5% was good.
God said this was not good. So He decided to email the 5% that were good and He wanted to encourage them, give them a little something to help them keep going.
Do you know what that email said? Ah, so you didn't get one either?

PLAN B Plan A is always my first choice.
You know, the one where everything works out to be happily ever after.
But more often than not, I find myself
dealing with the upside-down, inside-out version, where nothing goes as it should.
It’s at this point, that the real test of my
character comes in… Do I sink, or do I swim?
Do I wallow in self-pity and play the victim or simply shift gears
and make the best of the situation? The choice is mine. After all…
Life is all about how you handle Plan B.

Cries of “Merry Christmas” and the sound of
Christmas songs filling the air don’t always match up with the feelings of many people at this time of year.
For those suffering from the recent or impending death of loved ones, dealing with the pain of separation or divorce, struggling to find employment, or facing
depression or a family crisis, this can be a very isolated and dark time. Every greeting and every song reminds the grief-stricken of how unhappy life is at this moment. We recognize that a lot of
the Christmas celebrations do not meet everyone’s needs. The people of the Northern Lights Lutheran Parish invite you to a special holiday service
designed for those for whom the holidays might be difficult. If you have undergone a difficult loss, transition, or life change, the church cares about you and invites you to a special time of music and worship. Join us for our “Longest Night” Service at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Mass City at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, the 21st of December as we walk with those who are truly experiencing
their longest night.
There will be a coffee fellowship following services. Everyone is welcome

If you, or a loved one is sick, in the
hospital, homebound, or are in need of pastoral care, please don’t

contact a church member, Pastor Jay, send an email, or leave a note in
the offering plate. All of our people are precious gifts of God and we do not want anyone to be unintentionally missed. Contact information and telephone
numbers are located on the front of this newsletter.
Annual Reports will be due in January before each Annual Meeting. Siloa has set their meeting date for January 22, and St. Paul’s has set theirs for January 29.
Wednesday Bible Adventures Perform at Aspirus Long Term Care
On November 16, the Students of St. Paul’s Wednesday Bible Adventures traveled to Aspirus Long
Term Care to sing songs, play the hand bells, and to visit with the residents. The children sang
patriotic songs, Christmas Carols, and hymns.
Before the show began, they shared some of their favorite table graces, and joined together with the
residents in reciting the Lord’s Prayer. They then had a wonderful snack provided by Aspirus. At the
end of the program, the children handed out cross bookmarks that they had made especially for the
LTC residents.
Wednesday Bible Adventures would again like to thank Margie Amos for her time and enthusiasm
working with the children and the hand bells, and thank you to Aspirus Long Term Care for having us
and for knowing how hungry the kids are after school and providing a much needed snack for them.
Also, we would like to thank Pam Luokka for setting this up and making it possible. We all very much
enjoyed it.
The program was filmed and then shown the next Sunday during services at St. Paul’s. If you were
unable to attend, it is posted on the Northern Lights Facebook page, and web site. We hope that you
will enjoy seeing the children putting one of their lessons of “Share the Light,” into action.

ADVENT The season of Advent begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas day. The term Advent, means coming. The Advent season helps us prepare our hearts to remember the first coming of our Savior and the reason he came—his birth was for his death; his death was for our birth. Advent also reminds us that Jesus is coming again.
