Praise the Lord! O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;

November is the month of Thanksgiving! We give thanks for the many

Dear Parents with Young Children in

Church,

You are doing something really, really important. We

know it’s not easy. We see you with your arms overflowing, and

we know you came to church already tired. Parenting is tiring.

Really tiring.

We watch you bounce and sway trying to keep the baby

quiet, juggling the infant car seat and the diaper bag as you find a

seat. We see you wince as your child cries. We see you anxiously pull things out of your bag of tricks to

try to quiet them.

And we see you with your toddler and your preschooler. We watch you cringe when your little girl

asks an innocent question in a voice that might not be an inside voice let alone a church whisper. We

hear the exasperation in your voice as you beg your child to just sit, to be quiet as you feel everyone’s

eyes on you. Not everyone is looking, but we know it feels that way.

We know you’re wondering, is this worth it? Why do I bother? We know you often leave

church more exhausted than fulfilled. But what you are doing is so important.

When you are here, the church is filled with a joyful noise. When you are here, the Body of

Christ is more fully present. When you are here, we are reminded that this worship thing we do isn’t

about Bible Study or personal, quiet contemplation but coming together to worship as a community

where all are welcome, where we share in the Word and Sacrament together. When you are here, we

have hope that these pews won’t be empty in ten years when your kids are old enough to sit quietly and

behave in worship. We know that they are learning how and why we worship now, before it’s too late.

They are learning that worship is important.

We see them learning. In the midst of the cries, whines, and giggles, in the midst of the

crinkling of pretzel bags and the growing pile of crumbs we see a little girl who insists on going two pews

up to share peace with someone she’s never met. We hear a little boy slurping (quite loudly) every last

drop of his communion wine out of the cup determined not to miss a drop of Jesus. We watch a child

excitedly color a cross and point to the one in the front of the sanctuary. We hear the echoes of Amens

just a few seconds after the rest of the community says it together. We watch a boy just learning to read

try to sound out the words in the bulletin or count his way to Hymn 672.

We know how hard it is to do what you’re doing, but we want you to know, it matters.

It matters to us. It matters to other children to not be alone in the pew. It matters to the congregation to

know that families care about faith, to see young people… and even on those weeks when you can’t see

the little moments, it matters to your children.

It matters that they learn that worship is what we do as a community of faith, that

everyone is welcome, that their worship matters. When we teach children that their worship

matters, we teach them that they are enough right here and right now as members of the

church community. They don’t need to wait until they can believe, pray or worship a certain way to be

welcome here, and there are adults who are still looking to be shown that. It matters that children

learn that they are an integral part of St. Peter; that their prayers, their songs, and even their

badly (or perfectly timed depending on who you ask) cries and whines are a joyful noise because it means

they are present.

We know it’s hard, but thank you for what you do when you bring your children to

church. Please know that your family - with all of its noise, struggle, commotion, and joy – are not

simply tolerated, you are a vital part of our community gathered in worship.

Sincerely,

The People of St. Peter Lutheran Church

The first large group meeting was on Sunday, October 19th. We opened with an active prayer

called The Six Gestures of Active Prayer by Joyce Rupp. The Mentees and some Mentors

shared their FAVORITE Bible verse. Mentors and Mentees were given homework for our next

meeting which is Sunday, November 16th at 6 pm in the Fireside Room. The topic will be

Spiritual Gifts. Please keep each of the Mentees in your prayers throughout the year as they

What’s Happening in Faith Formation?

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how to report on Faith Formation. I could report on

the number of students in Sunday School and Confirmation. To be honest, I’d have to look

it up and ask the teachers. We generally think an increase is good news, and by some

measures it is. It was thrilling to see so many young students in the three and four year

old class, and to see all the activity on the first Sunday of the education year. I’m so

moved by the Sunday School teachers and their care for their students, and that we have

been able to provide more teachers and helpers per class. These are adults and young

people who care about planting and nurturing the seeds of faith in our children.

And I’m told that this year’s confirmation class is a big one, and they are off to a great

start. I love hearing that! But what interests me even more is that there are seven adults

(including one young adult) working with our confirmation students, and that’s not even

counting our pastor and the mentor/mentee coordinator and all the mentors! And there

are three other adults who want to provide opportunities for growth and community

building among the post-confirmation youth of St. Peter. These are people who have made

a commitment to being part of Faith Formation for a specific age group, for a specific

purpose. They are to be treasured.

But Faith Formation goes so much wider and deeper than the education of our children

and youth, as important as that is. Our Bishop spoke to us about relationships in

ministry; in fact he said that’s what ministry is “all about.” If we are watching, if we are

Paying Attention, we can see those relationships in action. As a delightful part of my job,

I am noticing. Last week I stopped in to talk to the quilters and learn a bit about what

they do and how they do it. I was certainly impressed with their organized “system” and

the teamwork. I had definitely been impressed by all the beautiful quilts we had blessed

in church. But there was more. It was after lunch so about half the group had already

left. I saw women of different generations working together. I saw long time members and

newer, not yet members. I saw relationships of long standing and not so long standing. I

was seeing faith being formed and built in service together.

So it seems to me that better questions to ask about Faith Formation might be along the

lines of, “Are the connections that are unique to being in a faith community being

formed?” “Are they being strengthened?” “Are we open as a community to the newness

that the Holy Spirit may be bringing us?” “Are we encouraging one another regardless of

age, to trust God more and love each other more?” “Are we learning how to live as though

we see Christ in the people we meet?” My role as a Coordinator is to Pay Attention; to see

the connections, to see where connections could be strengthened, and to build

relationships: with you, among you, with the wider community. That’s a bit hard to

quantify, but I’m ok with that. –Janet Blank

It was a cool October evening on Thursday the sixteenth, 2014. Frost was on the

pumpkins but it was warm and cozy in the Café. The tables were decorated in a

Halloween theme with gray placemats, orange pumpkins and fall leaves strewn on the

tables.

Our guests were served a wonderful meal. It started with a fresh garden salad with

western dressing, the entrée was a mock lasagna and buttered corn, accompanied by a

piece of delicious warm garlic bread. Freshly baked pumpkin bars topped off the meal.

Our guests enjoyed raspberry iced tea, lemonade, milk, coffee and, of course, water as

beverages.

We served 125 plates, 7 meals went to shut ins. In addition a full hotel pan of lasagna

went to the Open Door Drop In Center in Sheboygan.

Items could include jewelry, knick knacks, candles, holiday décor/decorations, kitchen

items, decorator pillows, mugs, hot chocolate packets, candy canes for the mugs, art

and craft items, puzzles, videos/dvds, games, color or puzzle books, crayons, markers,

school supplies, toys, small tools, tape measures, fishing tackle, warm hats, gloves,

scarves, gift wrap or bags, tissue paper, and bubble wrap. Gently used warm coats,

snow pants, and boots are also appreciated.

These are the events St. Peter gave so generously to last year. Items donated were

greatly appreciated by many families and students. Again, thank you for our

generosity and support!

On October 11th members of St. Peter and Grace Episcopal Church prepared and served the

Emmaus Meal at the Salvation Army. We had a number of volunteers to prepare and serve

the meal and to clean up afterward; some of the volunteers did all three! Together we served

a total of 180 total plates of food with food left over for the Salvation Army. Thank you to all

of the volunteers who were able to serve. We could not have done it without you! The

volunteers were: Anita Knaub, Ben Hoyt, Dick Johnsen, Nancy Johnsen, Dione Knop, Maddy

Jo Dettloff, Kaleb Sprengel, Steve Weina, Nate Smith, Brett Smith Lisa Smith, Jane Busch,

Zona Leitch, Bryon Leitch, Nancy Jurk, Kathy Hocevar, Kevin Witt.

Our next opportunity to serve is December 13th and we are looking for a chef for the

meal. If you are interested please contact Anita Knaub or Kevin Witt for more information.

For all who are interested in serving at the December 13th meal there will be a sign-up sheet

on the kiosk located in the outer narthex of the church. The sign-up sheet provides the

information needed to make your commitment to support this ministry. There are two

opportunities for you to serve. The first shift generally starts at 8:30am and finishes about

10:00am. This is the time when the meal is prepared, the dining room tables are arranged

and the tables set with dinnerware, placemats, flowers and condiments. The second shift

starts at 10:30/11:00am and finishes about 1:30pm. This is the time when our guests are

greeted, the meal is served, the dining room is put back in order, and the supplies returned to

St. Peter. This is our opportunity to serve our local community at this worthwhile event.

Your support is needed to not only prepare and serve the meal but also to keep this ministry

active and viable. Take the time to check your calendar, review the sign-up sheet on the kiosk

and sign-up. If you have any questions or concerns please contact Anita Knaub or Kevin Witt.

It has been an exciting month at St Peter!!

The highlight of the month, in my opinion being the installation of Pastor Kristin by

Bishop Jeff Barrow signifying the end of our search for our new pastor.

It is comforting to have the search behind us and we are well positioned to move

forward as we continue to build healthy relationships with God, with each other, and

within our community.

As much as this has been a time for completion of tasks it is also an exciting beginning

as we embark on our Christ walk with Pastor Kristin. One statement that Pastor

Kristin made at her installation ceremony particularly caught my attention. As much

as this was an installation of Pastor Kristin it was also a time for each member of St

Peter to renew our commitment to the work of the church’s ministries. It was an

installation for each and every one of us at St Peter.

I am reminded of a quote by Henry Ford “if everyone is moving forward together, then

success takes care of itself.” As we work together at St Peter let us remember that the

task becomes much easier if we are pulling in the same direction. Let us continue to

move forward with our ministries; to work on expanding their reach and effectiveness.

We are a strong and vibrant community of faith. The time is now to share the

excitement and energy that is a part of St Peter. It was an exciting month at St Peter

but we have only just begun our journey.

We have been installed with Pastor Kristin ---let the journey begin!!

by Sheri Piekarski. Minutes approved by general consensus. Spiritual Development led by Pastor Kristin.

Congregational Thank You - post on bulletin - thank you to those that helped with on clean up day.

• PASTOR’S REPORT Thank you for welcoming me to St. Peter! I appreciate the hospitality that you have extended

as I make this transition. It has been an exciting time and there is a lot to look forward to! There is also a lot for me to

learn and I appreciate your patience and assistance as I continue to get the hang of things. Here are some thoughts I’d

like to share with you. I am looking forward to the installation and celebration this weekend. Thank you so much to

everyone who has been working so hard to get everything ready! There is a lot going on at St. Peter! Please invite me

to meetings, gatherings, and events so that I can continue to get to know people and learn about the many ministries

that are taking place here. I will be hosting a few small group gatherings, which will be opportunities for fellowship,

food, and conversation. It is my hope that people will come to hang out and chat so that we can continue to get to

know each other. Dates and times coming soon. I have been having a blast with the confirmation youth and adults on

Wednesday nights. It is a great group and I am happy to join in the fun! The ELCA National Youth Gathering is this

summer. I have chatted with a couple of high school students who are interested in attending. Registration is next

week so please let me know if you know of any 9th-12th graders who might be interested in going. If we have enough

interest we can get a group together to attend July 14-20 in Detroit, MI. I met with the Tripartite group and have

monthly meetings scheduled to get together with Father Phil and Father Karl. Thanksgiving worship will be at St.

Dominic on Wednesday, November 26th at 7:00pm. Covenant Renewal will be Sunday, January 11th. New Member

Gatherings are happening on Sundays, October 19th and 26th from 9:15am-10:15am in the Fireside Room. It would be

great to have a council member or two there to talk about the church and help answer questions. Anyone interested?

I cannot express enough how grateful I am to be your pastor. I feel blessed to be with you all during this time of

transition, healing, and growth. God is at work at St. Peter and in each of you. I look forward to being on the journey

with you as we worship God, honor the past, embrace the future, and remain open to where God is leading us.

Council minutes continued from the previous page

• EL SALVADOR Communications: Skyping with the Apostoles de Cristo community on September 21 did take

place, but there was one glitch—our brothers and sisters at Apostoles couldn’t hear us. We will continue work on

perfecting this process. Skyping will be tried again at a later date. Letters from our scholarship students are still being

translated and will be handed out as soon as all of these are completed. Scholarship students who have graduated

from high school and would like to receive monetary support for further education or training would have to submit a

letter to the El Salvador Team letting us know their specific school plans and career goals. They would need to answer

the following questions: What will you be studying? When will you be able to return to classes? Are you able to make

a commitment to your staying in school and finishing your classes? How much time will it take to finish your classes?

What is the cost of your classes? All scholarship sponsors will be asked to write a letter to their student by October 26

(final deadline will be November 2). Letters should be emailed to Carol Witt or placed in her mailbox and she will have

these translated. (If you can get someone to translate your letter, that would be great.) Please include a photo of

yourself and/or your family. These photos are really appreciated by our students. The letters will be sent with a delegation traveling to El Salvador in November. Greater Milwaukee Synod El Salvador Team: A financial

picture of the El Salvador Lutheran Church was reviewed based on a church audit. The church has little money and

isn’t able to pay all pastor salaries. A 10% administrative fee will be sent in with all partnership projects money. So,

when scholarship money is sent from St. Peter, a 10% administrative fee will be included. This money will go the

Salvadoran Lutheran Church to cover expenses of the operation of the pastoral work and administration. All

emergency funds sent will not need to include the 10% administrative fee. The synod endowment fund established for

paying El Salvadoran pastors salaries continues to generate income – $108,000 has been sent for salaries. All churches

in the synod are encouraged to contribute to the endowment fund. The pastor’s food project –money is being sent to El

Salvador to purchase food baskets. Financial Update: Dick Johnson (along with Carol Witt) has done some

preplanning for the 2015 budget. He has clarified questions that the team had regarding the current budget and

recommended some changes. He provided a detailed picture of expenses and revenue. Thanks for your excellent work! Synod El Salvador Mission of Healing: Dates are February 14- 21 in 2015 in Central South (Apostoles de Cristo)

area. If you are interested in participating, contact Muriel Otto, [email protected]. Spanish Class at St.

Peter: A short term Spanish class maybe offered at St. Peter. Tentative dates are from October 20 –November 17. Two

sessions would be held two times weekly on Mondays and Thursdays from 3:30- 4:30PM and 6:00-7:00PM. The class

would run for 5 weeks and consist of 9 sessions. Homework would be involved. Fees might be $5.00 per session per

person. Dara (who has translated a lot for Pastor Rafael) would be the teacher. More information will be coming out. Important Dates: El Salvador Synod Team Meeting, Monday, October 20, 6:30 PM at the Synod Office. El Salvador

Team Meeting, Thursday, November 6, 6:30 PM in the Fireside Room. Mission of Healing, February 14-21, in Central

South El Salvador.

• FAITH FORMATION Barbara Bubb (Council Meeting) - last meeting was held with Amy K, Janet and Barb. Janet

is working on a church calendar that will include all meetings, events, etc. Faith Formation team needs to discuss the

future direction of the team.

• OLD BUSINESS Custodian Situation - Cleaning Service Contract with One Girl and a Broom. Corrections to

contract include: 1) total agreed on is $1,100 ($1,000/month and $100 for supplies); 2) Include number of cleaning days

per month; 3) Include itemization of cleaning supplies purchased. Steve Weina contacted references, two gave a very

good referral, one stated that she was no longer working for them. Council discussed what questions we can legally

ask during interview process. One Girl and a Broom is not insured or bonded. Dan Rostollan is working on a Holds

Harmless Agreement. Scott Morrelle is in the process of obtaining a quote from one other company. One Girl and a

Broom is filling available openings fast, however, we need to wait until we receive the second quote before making a

motion. Scott will forward second estimate to council members as soon as he receives it. Scott stated that we have

until the 15th to get back to One Girl and a Broom. Steve Weina - the quote we have of $1,100 is the most we would

want to pay. Lutheran World Relief Boxcar October 18 (9-11am) - parking lot of First United Church. Finalize

Installation Sunday prep—Set up - 3pm on Saturday, Table decorations - Barbara Bubb will take care of, we are

setting up for 110 people. Motion by Steve Weina to spend $328.13 for chicken from Pizza Ranch, second by Barbara

Bubb. No further discussion. Motion approved. Bishop will be here for both services. Parking lot/sidewalk/driveway

situation - Scott contacted Todd Lorge, he will replace the sidewalk for the cost of materials only. No charge for

labor. $1,000 for concrete materials, this does not include the steps. We will have to open the sidewalk to determine

the cause of the sinkhole. Todd is also looking at refinishing the stairs going into the sanctuary as they are

structurally unsound.

• NEW BUSINESS El Salvador Spanish Class Building Use Request -Council questions: 1) is the instructor earning a

profit for her services? Yes; 2) Who came up with the $45 cost? unknown. Motion by Steve Weina to allow the El

Salvador team to use St. Peter to teach beginning Spanish classes, 2 days/week , 2 classes/day for 5 weeks, second by Council Minutes continued on the next page

• Sheri Piekarski. Discussion followed. Questions that need to be answered: 1) will cost be an issue for some

members? 2) is this open to all members. 3) should we charging members for these classes? 4) Is the $45 cost to

cover materials? 5) If approved, are we setting a precedent? 6) What is the money being used for? (this being the

main concern of the board). Motion Denied. Rainy Day Fund Creation - We currently have $40,000 in the

checking account, the finance team is recommending that we put $25,000 of that away for capital improvements, or

other unexpected expenses. For instance, the furnace may need to be replaced soon ($25,000). Motion by Steve

Weina to put $25,000 in an account for a “Rainy Day” to be used as seen fit by the council, second by Barbara

Bubb. Discussion followed - are we going to be adding to this fund on a regular basis? Steve, we can try. The

finance team can look into it. Nate, if we have trouble, from a budget standpoint, is that money going to be

available to us. Steve, yes. The furnace should be replaced soon, there is a 10% energy rebate available now, we

would have to order by December. Nate, I would hope that we are disciplined enough and can keep the money in

one account. Motion carries. Insurance Review - The Finance team recommends that we stay with Cincinnati

Insurance Company. Total annual policy premium is $5,525, it is a three year contract and rates are guaranteed

not to go up for three years. We could lower the premium by raising the deductible, discussed options. Motion by

Steve Weina to approve renewing the policy with Cincinnati Insurance Company, second by Ashley

Fielder. Motion carries. Budget Items to Finance Committee - council, please contact assigned teams and have

them get 2015 budges to Steve Weina as soon as possible. Overall contract Reviews (TLC, COGIC, snowplowing) -

snow removal contract for 2014-2015, we will renew contract with Spielvogel & Sons Excavating. Rainbow Kids -

Steve received a letter requesting our 2014 annual contribution of $120, did we contribute $120 last year? If yes,

council agrees that we continue donating $120/year to Rainbow Kids. Nomination Team - there will be a few

openings on the council next year. Nate will begin working on nominations.
