(NC) With each day the weather gets colder, and thoughts turn to bundling up and hunkering down. But as the temperature drops, we are reminded that flu season is right around the corner.

“There are some really simple ways to help your family fight the flu this winter,” explains Laura Weyland, a pharmacist with Shoppers Drug Mart. “People don’t have to wait it out and hope for the best. There are three easy tips to help keep you healthy this year: eat well, wash your hands frequently, and get the flu shot.”

“While it’s important to make healthy food choices all year, it’s also a good idea to look

at what you eat during flu season to ensure you’re getting the nutrients your body needs,” says Laura McCann, a registered dietitian with Loblaws. “Vitamins C and E are antioxidants for the maintenance of good health while zinc supplements have been proven to help maintain immune function. Foods that contain an abundance of these are good to look for during your grocery shop.”

Below are a few foods that will help you maintain a healthy diet:

• Citrus Fruit - Not only are citrus fruits a good source of vitamin C, they’re naturally delicious. If fresh fruit is not an option,

look for fresh or frozen 100% fruit juice. • Nuts and Seeds - A variety of nuts and

seeds during cold and flu season help you benefit from vitamin E – a dietary anti-oxidant that helps in the maintenance of good health.

• Garlic - Raw garlic has been traditionally used in herbal medicine for hundreds of years to help relieve the symptoms associ-ated with upper respiratory tract infections and catarrhal conditions.

To help protect your family, make sure everyone gets a flu shot. Flu shots are avail-able at Shoppers Drug Mart or at your local grocery store pharmacy. www.newscanada.com

(NC) Did you know that Cana-dians spend nearly 90 per cent of their time indoors? This is especially true in colder months. Consequently, concern about indoor air quality is increasing

– and rightly so.

Air pollution and contami-nants can be found in abun-dance throughout our homes in products and materials that we are in contact with every day. Poor air quality can be caused by household chemi-cals, by biological pollutants such as mould, mildew, and dust mites, and by off-gassing from building materials and HVAC systems. Advancements in home construction have also created dwellings that are more

airtight than ever before which seal in harmful pollutants. The potential health implications can be serious.

Health Canada indicates that incidences of asthma have increased fourfold in the past 15 years. Furthermore, 52 per cent of those households linked poor indoor air quality as a direct cause. Yet, even as the issue’s prevalence grows, homeowners can take some preventative measures and

precautions to safeguard their health and improve indoor air quality, as follows:

1. Store varnishes, paint, and solvents outside of the home. Opt for a storage area with good ventilation to deter the effects of off-gassing. Paints, varnishes and solvents can emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are potentially harmful to human health and the envi-ronment.

2. Prevent and remove all house-hold mould. Ensure there is adequate ventilation in rooms prone to water vapour, namely the washroom. Likewise, fix leaks in pipes, walls or floors or on the roof. Invest in a dehu-

midifier to control humidity levels in your home. Mould and mildew are known contributors to allergies and asthma.

3. Invest in an air purifier. Our homes routinely harbour pet dander, dust, dust mites and other allergens, as well as harmful VOCs. An effective solu-tion to improve indoor air is to use a high-quality air purifier with an electrostatic precipitator, like the Oreck ProShield. This type of air purifier, featuring an

advancement called Truman Cell technology, will also capture and destroy allergens and dust, as well as larger particles like hair and lint. Look for a unit with an ‘oxygenator’ stage that converts ozone to oxygen for cleaner air.

4. Introduce house plants into your home. Some plants can be very effective at improving air quality and even removing harmful VOCs like benzene,

formaldehyde, trichloroeth-ylene, xylene and toluene. Good plant choices include aloe vera, dracaena ‘Janet Craig’, areca palm, and dragon tree.

Improving household air quality is essential to maintaining optimal health and ensuring a safer indoor environment. Following these tips will help you breathe easy. www.newscanada.com

(NC) This month we celebrate Movember when men are chal-lenged to grow a moustache to spark conversation and raise vital funds for prostate cancer, testicular cancer, poor mental health and physical inactivity.

While growing a moustache and encouraging donations is an obvious way to support the cause, Movember is also an opportunity to start up a conversation about men’s

health concerns with friends – perhaps over a beer. In fact, the idea for the movement sprouted over a few beers among friends in Melbourne, Australia back in 2003.

“Raising awareness for men’s health is crucial in our goal of having men live happier, healthier and longer lives. Encouraging a conversation

among men about sometimes sensitive health subjects, is one of the reasons we’re so happy to welcome back Rickard’s Red as our official beer partner,” says Claire Lamont, country director for Movember Canada.

“We know that the conversa-tions during Movember help to save lives, as last year 76% of our participants say that they were more aware of the health issues they faced than they were previously.”

“Rickard’s is so pleased to support Movember again in 2015 and we’re helping guys get in the spirit with mous-tache themed cans of Rick-ard’s Red,” says Eric Goulet, of

Rickard’s. “Sharing a relaxed beer with friends can create an environment that makes it easier for guys to have those tougher conversations about their health, which they might not feel comfortable having otherwise.”

MANAGE HOLIDAY STRESS EFFORTLESSLY WITH A FEW DO & DON’T TIPS

THEANINE (FOUND IN GREEN TEA) HAS BEEN SHOWN TO PROMOTE PRODUCTION OF BRAIN WAVES ASSOCIATED WITH A STATE OF CALM, RELAXED ALERTNESS, MUCH LIKE MEDITATION.

(NC) While the holidays are a time for festivities, you may feel more stressed out than usual from family obligations, entertaining, cooking, shop-ping and increased spending. Try these creative tips from the Canadian Health Food Associ-ation (CHFA) to increase your odds of feeling much better:

DO GET REGULAR EXERCISE

Getting physical relieves stress in many ways, such as helping to regulate adrena-line and cortisol, two of our body’s main stress-related

hormones. It has also been proven to improve the quality of our sleep. Ideally, 20 to 30 minutes of sustained cardio in your target range a few times a week is a healthy goal.

DO DRINK GREEN TEA

Along with being a recognized antioxidant, green tea is also a rich source of L-theanine, a unique calming and relaxing amino acid. Unlike most compounds, L-theanine has the ability to cross the blood-brain barrier, directly affecting the central nervous system. Theanine has been shown to

promote production of brain waves associated with a state of calm, relaxed alertness, much like meditation.

DO LOOK FOR HERBAL SUPPLEMENTS THAT CONTAIN ADAPTOGENS

Adaptogens help to strengthen and regulate the body’s major stress network, the hypotha-lamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Herbs such as rhodiola, and Asian or American ginseng support the production and f luent communication of hormones and neurotransmit-

ters within the HPA. This helps us maintain a sense of calm and balance, and keep our energy levels even and sustained.

DO NOT OVERINDULGE

A little indulgence at this time of year is understand-able, but as the saying goes, too much of a good thing can lead to one’s undoing! When holiday parties get into full swing and the eggnog starts flowing, it’s worth reminding yourself not to overindulge. You’ll also spare yourself unwanted calories that cause even more stress.

DO NOT LOSE SLEEP

Your body needs sleep as a natural restorative, and it is probably the single most important gift you can give yourself to reduce stress and stay healthy. However, it’s not just quantity that’s important when it comes to sleep, but also quality. If you’re having difficulty falling asleep, try diffusing essential oils in your

bedroom to promote a calmer, more relaxed state of mind. The essential oil of gardenia, for example, has been shown to have anxiety-reducing effects.

Whichever way you chose to spend your holidays, remember that your health is the greatest gift of all. Additional tips on natural, healthy living are avail-able at chfa.ca. www.newscanada.com

(NC) A good skin care regimen is important all year long, but a drop in humidity and temperatures during the fall and winter seasons can set the scene for dryness and irritation. In a recent survey, 68 per cent of women across Canada said that when purchasing skincare products, the most important issue is dry skin.

According to dermatologist Dr. Paul Cohen, effective moisturization is the key to preventing dry, dehydrated skin. He explains that skincare oils can play a role in the maintenance of healthy skin, particularly during the dry, cold weather months. “When oil meets skin, an amazing thing happens,” says Cohen. “Oils such as Bio-Oil can hydrate and help balance the

skin while providing a barrier to protect against the elements and seal in moisture.”

Products like Bio-Oil have helped consumers become more comfortable with using oils for skincare because it’s light, non-greasy and safe for sensitive skin. In recent years, new choices have appeared in skincare aisles, with the latest being Lipidol, an entire range of skincare oils designed to supplement the skin’s own natural oily layer.

Cohen cautions that without proper care, dry skin can reach a point where moisturization is ineffective and other treatments may be required. “Dry skin, particularly the hands, can worsen over time, become cracked, chafed, red and itchy,” he says. “You always want to prevent a breakdown of the skin barrier because this is when skin can become prone to dermatitis and infection. Preventing moisture loss is important to help keep the skin smooth, supple and in top shape.”

For smooth, silky skin, try replacing your usual cream or lotion with a moisturizing skincare oil this winter. www.newscanada.com

(NC) This is the time of year when everyone talks about “giving back” and helping those less fortunate than ourselves. Fortunately, many of us are easily able to meet our basic needs, but there are still too many at home and abroad who lack essentials such as food and shelter. The holiday season with its spirit of caring for families and strangers alike is a good time to think about giving back.

There are numerous ways you can engage charitably in your own and the global community:

• Volunteer at a local soup kitchen or homeless shelter.

• Donate to a food bank—and donate regularly throughout the year.

• Clean out your closet and give what you haven’t worn in a while

• Help the homeless as they are espe-cially vulnerable to the elements. If you see someone outside on a cold day, provide them with warm socks, hats and scarves.

• Give your children some money to donate to a charity—and ask why they have chosen one cause over another to encourage discussions about giving.

If you want to buy a gift that provides hope and the real possibility of mean-ingful change for people in devel-oping nations, numerous charitable and non-governmental organizations offer a wide range of ethical choices such as Plan Canada’s Gifts of Hope.

It was a spectacular evening at Nobleton Lakes on Thursday, October 15, where over 250 people gathered together to sip on wine, beer and martinis while savouring the incredible food prepared by the Nobleton Lakes Golf Club at the Sip & Savour event.

Master of Ceremonies Art Hindle did a supreme job of kicking off the evening, and guests were serenaded by the incom-parable Catherine Hughes.

The live auction was a great success. David Beasley, as always, did a masterful job leading the bidding. Thanks to Art Hindle, who generously doubled up his auction item of a set tour of the new

CBC drama ‘Shoot the Messenger’, and to Catherine Hughes for doubling up her auction item of a catered dinner for eight in your home, followed by a private concert. Thanks also to Priestly Demolition for their donation of a Box to a Raptors game, and to Joe Melo at AllStone Quarries Limited for his dona-tion of a solid granite bench.

The silent auction was a great success as well with thanks to the many local businesses including restaurants Locale, Raffaele’s, Hogan’s Inn and Port Soiree, who donated fantastic auction items. The Leafs, Raptor, and Toronto FC tickets were well received. A special thanks to the ad libbed, and entertaining

live auction of the Raptors tickets by Art Hindle at the end of the evening. To the over 200 people who purchased tickets and attended Sip & Savour, we thank you for coming, and for the gener-osity in your bidding for auction items.

To the volunteers who helped collect auction items, helped set up the decor, then take it all down afterwards, we thank you.

To our sponsors, we could never have done this without you. Your sponsor-ships mean that every single dollar from the ticket sales, and the live and silent auctions, go to the families whom we serve. Your sponsorship is what makes Sip & Savour possible. Thank you so much.

(NC) The Christmas tree is one of the oldest holiday customs. It brings warmth to the home and is at the centre of many family traditions. According to Cindy Jardim, Style and Trends Director at Lowe’s Canada, a growing number of Canadians are opting for artificial trees.

“Today’s artificial trees offer lasting beauty with finishes that are easy to mistake for natural trees,” says Jardim.

“With the large selection of tree types and range of shapes and sizes available, they offer a tremendous amount of design versatility. What I love most is the convenience. They are clean and mainte-nance free, plus features like integrated lights make set up and teardown quick and easy.

The first step is selecting a tree that works for your space, ensuring it’s in proportion to the rest of the room. Seven and a half foot trees are most popular because they work with ceiling heights of eight to nine feet. The Hall-mark Tree is a great option to meet these requirements. It’s a pre-lit frosted pine with branches that are designed to display holiday cards and photos. You need approxi-mately five feet of depth

for a seven and a half foot tree or six feet of depth for a nine foot tree, which is a great option for rooms with ceilings ten feet or higher. With all trees, it’s important that they don’t look crowded. Allow for a three inch cushion of space between furniture and walls. The nine foot EZ Slim Aspen Fir with colour changing lights is a great choice for a smaller room with a high ceiling – think loft condo. This tree features Easy Light Technology with hidden cords and a tidy plug to help keep floor space decluttered.

For homes with soaring ceiling heights, the twelve-foot Colour Changing Lit Tree is a stately tree that is sure to add a wow-factor. The lights change colour at the touch of a foot switch providing elegant illumina-tion in warm white, multico-lour, and changing colour to suit any décor need.

Start your own family tradi-tions this season with a tree selected specially for your home. It’s the foundation of your family’s personal style and a focal point of holiday cheer. Merry Christmas.

It’s time to make your list, check it twice, and get your home in the holiday spirit.

Take advantage of the milder temperatures right now to get your holiday lights up – and to get it done safely, consider these tips from Hydro One:

• Always use Canadian Standards Associa-tion (CSA) approved lights, cords, plugs and sockets that are properly marked for outdoor or indoor use.

• Do not overload circuits. Have no more than 1,400 watts on a circuit. If other lights in the house dim when the holiday lighting is turned on or the plug is very

hot after unplugging it, your circuit is overloaded. To figure out a circuit’s load, multiply the number of bulbs by the watts per bulb, and add any lamps, appliances or other equipment on the same circuit.

• Before you put light strings on a shrub, tree or house, check for breaks or signs of insulation deterioration. Frayed cords or loose connections indicate that the wiring is poor. Replace any defective sets.

• Never install lights with the power on. Test lights first, then unplug to install.

• Keep electrical connections off the ground. Use eave clips or insulated staples, rather than nails and tacks, to hold light strings in place. >>>

In addition to safety, why not save energy as well this holiday season? Make the switch to light emitting diode (LED) lights and enjoy significant energy and cost savings. According to Natural Resources Canada, LEDs use 80% less energy than their incandescent counterparts, so now is the time to upgrade your old strings.

If you’re still not sure, consider this: incandescent bulbs waste a lot of energy - 90% of the energy they consume is used to heat the bulb, while only 10% is used for lighting. LEDs, by contrast, directly convert electricity to light without the use of a filament or glass bulb, resulting in less energy loss through heat.

LED light strings also last up to 50,000 hours and up to 10 times longer than incandescent light strings. And because they don’t have moving parts, filaments or glass, they’re much more durable and shock-re-sistant than other light strings.

More information along with coupons for LEDs is available at www.HydroOne.com/SaveEnergy.www.newscanada.com

GIFT IDEAS FOR YOUR Party Hostess(NC) Festive gatherings should be fun and heartwarming occasions, but choosing the perfect hostess gift for every party can get to be a headache. The classic bottle of wine, box of chocolates or cute kitchen accessory all spring to mind, but what are some other options? Here are five holiday-themed gift ideas that are simple, thoughtful, suited to a range of tastes and won’t break the bank.

• A box of holiday-themed coffee: If your hostess owns a Keurig brewing system, treat them to a special box of coffee. The velvety and woodsy Van Houtte Holiday Blend or rich and smooth Timothy’s Christmas Blend, available on keurig.ca, are both medium roast blends in K-Cup pods perfect after a family meal or over breakfast.

• Mason jars: These handy glass containers have a million and one uses: They can double as drinking glasses, flower pots, a place to keep homemade crafts, and of course a jar for your favourite homemade jam. Your hostess will be sure to appre-ciate this gift that can be reused in a variety of ways.

• High quality nuts: Quality seasoned nuts are a guaranteed crowd pleaser at any party. With a wide variety to choose from like chocolate covered, salted and more, they can be shared with guests on the night or eaten as a snack the next day. It is thoughtful to check ahead for nut allergies.

• Specialty olive oil: A bottle of high quality extra virgin olive oil shows you’ve gone the extra mile to thank your hostess for her hospitality. A gift that’s both classy and refined, olive oil is widely available at international food markets as well as regular supermarkets.

• The gift of relaxation and pampering: Any party requires a lot of planning and preparation, not to mention the cleanup afterwards, so the gift of relaxation will be sure to delight any hostess. This could be as simple as a prepaid manicure or a gift certificate for a cleaning service so she can put her feet up once the guests have gone home.
