Get your upcoming tax refund faster with direct deposit(NC) With tax filing season upon us, many Canadians are anxiously waiting for their refunds to arrive. For those Canadians who have yet to sign up for direct deposit, the wait will be that much longer and could involve blustery trips to the bank to deposit their refunds.

Direct deposit is a much easier way for Canadians to access the pay-ments they receive from the federal government, including their tax refunds, which we all know are very much appreciated this time of the year. Even payments like Old Age Pension or Canada Child Tax Benefit can be deposited directly into people’s bank accounts and the payments are secure as well.

Currently, Ottawa issues over 300 million payments each year with 57 million cheques still being printed, processed and mailed annually. The cost savings associated with direct deposit is huge and results in millions in taxpayer savings a year in printing, processing, mailing and transportation.

This tax season, the federal government is reminding Canadians that direct deposit is fast, easy, safe and convenient, not to mention envi-ronmentally-friendly. Canadians can avoid having to wait the normal mailing time to get their tax refund just by applying for direct deposit. All they have to do is provide their banking info when filing their taxes online or at their bank or financial institution. They can also sign up in several ways, by phone, online, in-person and by mail. To find out more on how to enrol, call 1-800-593-1666 or visit www.directdeposit.gc.ca.

cal scavenger has also been found to reduce inflammation, which we know is a precursor to several chronic diseases.

Rich hues are also seen in plants containing anthocyanins, some examples being red cab-bage, rhubarb and red onions. Various studies have shown anthocyanins to be beneficial for protection again cardiovascular disease, reducing alcohol-induced damage to the liver, decreasing carcinogenic activities in the body and enhancing cognitive function. Try includ-ing red cabbage in the form of sauerkraut to your diet this spring. Not only will you be reaping the benefits of phytonutrients, but you will also be boosting your gut health with this fermented food option.

Don’t let the rainy weather get you down; add some sunshine to your diet in the form of carotenoids. This category of phytonutrients is known to supply sunny orange and yellow

tones to your diet, seen in carrots and squash. But they can also be found, in season, in toma-toes, turnip greens, spinach, and rhubarb. Humans are actually incapable of synthesiz-ing carotenoids, so it is important that we obtain them through our diet. Carotenoids have been highlighted as having a number of important health benefits; particularly in decreasing the risk of certain cancers and potential loss of vision.

Choosing a colourful “in season” diet can actually save you money, ensures freshness (especially when buying from local vendors), and still provides you with variety all year long. Whenever possible, CHFA also recommends choosing organic produce for reduced exposure to pesticides and other unwanted toxins.

Add colour to your diet this spring with the help of your local natural health food retailer. You will see the “find a retailer” tool online at chfa.ca.

Put some colour on your table(NC) As nature wakes up to spring, we see vibrant colours returning to our surroundings. These colours are not only appealing to the eye, they can also signal nutritional value to inspire our food choices. The Canadian Health Food Association (CHFA) recommends exploring a variety of colourful foods in your diet to make sure you receive the benefits from a vast spectrum of vitamins, minerals and nutrients that are provided by each colour group.

Phytonutrients are natural chemical com-pounds found in plants that give your produce its enticing colour. During spring, there are many colourful, in-season vegetables and fruits for you to enjoy.

The rich red and bright yellow colours in beets are due to the presence of a unique type of phytonutrient called betalains. Betalains are powerful antioxidants, which aid our body’s natural detoxification process. This free radi-

Paint your home passionately, the bolder the better(NC) Out with the old and in with the bold. Rich, daring hues have been quickly invading spaces across North America and are becoming the go-to colours for design professionals, DIYers and home décor aficionados. Bordeaux reds, deep greys and invigorating blues are taking over, which make it safe to say that the bolds are sticking around.

If you’re one to always stay on top of the latest trends and have yet to decide how to incorporate the go-to colours of the day into your decorating projects, painting is always an easy and affordable option. When plagued with the age-old question “how bold should I go?” brands like PARA Paints and their colour trend palettes are the perfect solution to help you tackle any paint project.

This year PARA Paints celebrates its 100th anniversary with the eye-catching 2015 Centennial Trend Palettes. One palette, the Mys-tique, brings together a blend of trend colours and accent hues with the celestial and rich navy blue Spectrolite (PF73) at the forefront. Intended to radiate feelings of serenity and clarity and inspired by the universe, Spectrolite maintains a bold and unspoken elegance.

“If you’re set on incorporating a statement colour like Spectrolite into your home and you’re not quite ready to take the plunge and paint your entire living room, try it as an accent wall or even paint

it on the front door,” says Garry Belfall, senior brand manager at PARA Paints. “The key is to find a small place to start and go from there,” Belfall adds. “With our trend colour palettes as your guide, all you need to do is pick a palette and let the transfor-mations unfold.”

Modest and unassuming from the exterior, on the inside, Precision Arms & Gunsmithing Ltd. is anything but. Although it may not appear so on first glance, this quaint little shop in King City is known around the world and referred to by its regulars as simply, Precision Arms. A husband and wife team, Stephen and Lisa Milton are friendly, approachable and easygoing – everything you’d expect from the owners of a small town business.

ONE-OF-A-KIND, HANDCRAFTED FIREARMSA firearm mastermind and unquestionable crafts-man, Stephen Milton designs and builds custom, bespoke firearms from end to end. His work is un-doubtedly some of the finest on the globe which is evident in the number of custom orders he receives from sport shooting enthusiasts everywhere. A member of the American Custom Gunmakers Guild, it’s the name Stephen Milton that sports shooters and hunters travel for. Although Precision Arms receives its fine share of customers south of the border and overseas, it’s a top choice for downtown Torontonians too.

When you’re a rarity and you’ve got what people want, apparently there’s no cap on travel time to get it.

EUROPEAN OUTDOOR CLOTHING LINE COMES TO KING CITYBut the handcrafted firearms aren’t the only products that have city dwellers flocking – Lisa recently launched an outdoor retail clothing line that has word of mouth travelling fast. Based in Denmark, Härkila has improved and refined what it refers to as “old fashioned hunting clothing”. And it takes a step beyond the manufacture of gear for the outdoor hunter and steps into a more general realm of stylish, classy and functional outdoor wear for men and women alike.

Lisa Milton is a full-line retailer of the Härkila line in Canada. From trousers, sweaters and jackets, to rubber boots, socks and a wide variety of accessories, Lisa’s Härkila product line in King City is causing a stir locally, and in particular, among the Bay Street crowd in Toronto.

ON TRENDSports shooters, hunters, outdoor enthusiasts – when it comes to Härkila, everyone seems to be paying attention. And it doesn’t end there. The Härkila style, quality and swank play right into a current global fashion trend on the rise: the “lumbersexual”. Various media outlets have defined a lumbersexual as “a man of the woods”, a “hardened outdoorsman”, and a man with a “laid back style that has been honed with more effort than he would like you to know”.

What has become a huge phenomenon in Europe is now making waves in North America and Precision Arms & Gunsmithing Ltd. is bringing it local. Like any great business owner, Lisa knows her market. With the launch of her Härkila clothing line distribution channel, she’s able to exquisitely complement the interests of her Precision Arms & Gunsmithing Ltd. customers with beautiful and functional clothing and accessories.

Perhaps one of Härkila’s most versatile accessory items is its ingenious foam padded seat that folds to a quarter of its size for easy portability. Origi-nally designed for outdoor activities that call for a comfortable resting place every now and then, Lisa is convinced it’ll be a hot item for local hockey parents. Who wouldn’t want a cozy, padded seat to keep their bottoms warm as they watch their kids play hockey in freezing cold arenas?

So the next time you find yourself out for a little jaunt along King Road, this might just be a place you pop into. But of course, if you’re like most of the walk-in traffic at Precision Arms & Gunsmith-ing, you’ve planned your trip and you’re travelling from the city for what you know will be a trek well worth it. ■

Add a touch of Tuscany to your dinner table(BPT) A recipe that is ideal for any occasion, from weeknight meals to Sunday suppers to get-togethers with friends, can be hard to come by. Tuscan Brined Pork Chops with Salsa Verde is a near-perfect answer for all of these occasions.

Created by food blogger Karen Tedesco of the popular blog FamilyStyle Food, this recipe was inspired by her visit to Vinci, Italy, where she experienced the people and the place behind the cooperative of more than 200 growers who work together to produce DaVinci Chianti.

Tedesco found natural herbs, including bay laurel, lavender and rosemary, growing all over the Tuscan countryside. As Tedesco explains, these are classic and delicious seasonings for thick cut pork chops with flavors that pair perfectly with a well-bal-anced glass of Chianti.

For more authentic Italian recipes and Chi-anti pairing ideas from DaVinci Wines, visit www.Facebook.com/DaVinciWine.

Tuscan Brined Pork Chops with Salsa VerdePORK CHOPS INGREDIENTS:

4 thick-cut pork rib chops (1 1/2 inches) 9 - 10 ounces each1/2 cup kosher salt1/2 cup brown sugar3 crushed garlic cloves4 crumbled bay leaves2 sprigs rosemary, roughly chopped, plus 1 tablespoon chopped2 dried red chili peppers, crumbledZest of one lemon, peeled with a vegetable peelerFreshly ground black pepper

SALSA VERDE INGREDIENTS:

1 cup Italian parsley leaves1 cup arugula1 cup cilantro leaves1 clove garlic2 teaspoons salt-preserved capers, rinsed3/4 cup extra-virgin olive oilSalt

DIRECTIONS:

Put the pork chops in a gallon size freezer bag and place the bag in a large bowl. In another large bowl whisk the salt and sugar with 6 cups water until dissolved. Add the garlic, bay leaves, rosemary sprigs, chili and lemon zest. Pour the brine over the pork. Seal bag and refrigerate for at least 1 hour and up to 4 hours.

Prepare a medium-hot fire in a grill. Remove chops from brine and pat dry. Place chops on the grill and cook 4 minutes per side. They should be nicely browned and register between 135 - 140 degrees on a meat thermometer.

Loosely cover the chops with foil and let rest 5 minutes. Season with black pepper to taste and sprinkle with chopped rosemary; serve with Salsa Verde.

To make Salsa Verde, pulse parsley, arugula and cilantro in a food processor until chopped. Add garlic, capers, olive oil and 1/2 teaspoon salt and pulse until combined. Taste and season with additional salt if desired.

Use this handy spring cleaning checklistGet ready to open the win-dows wide open and let that fresh spring air in.

(NC) After the long Canadian winter, there’s something about this time of year that inspires us to throw open our windows and let the fresh breeze in. Spring is an ideal time to de-clutter and infuse renewed energy into our living space.

A complete spring clean overhaul can take days of course, so plan accordingly and set a realistic schedule. The following tips will soon have your home dust-free:

• Before you begin cleaning, categorize the list of jobs required (e.g. cleaning baseboards, orga-nizing cupboards, washing curtains). Although it seems easier to tackle all the vacuuming at once, completing one room at a time will give you the satisfaction to continue.

• Begin with dusting and vacuuming surfaces—from ceiling to baseboards—as well as chan-

deliers, light bulbs and light fixtures. Spring cleaning does require a little old fashioned elbow grease. Scrub floors with a scrubbing brush and cleaning solution, clean the grout on tiled floors. If you don’t already own one, rent a steam cleaner for carpets.

• Take down window treatments and wash or dry clean. Wipe wooden blinds with a gentle wood cleaner, wash aluminum blinds outdoors where they can dry. Clean the inside of windows.

• As a rule, work from the top down, so areas don’t get dirty again. However, when it comes to washing walls, it is easier to start from the bottom using a sponge mop. This way, you can more easily clean up any drips.

• In the kitchen, thoroughly clean the tops of cabi-nets, fridges and stove vent. Be ruthless with the contents of your fridge and throw out anything old, or furry. Defrost your freezer, empty the contents and wipe the inside with a mix of a litre of hot water with 2 tablespoons of baking soda.

• In the bedroom, flip your mattress and edit your wardrobe. Store away winter garments until the next season and get rid of clothes you haven’t worn for more than a year; don’t save them for “someday”.

• Organize bookshelves and storage cabinets. Spring cleaning is a good time to donate unused or unwanted items. One place you can donate is to a ReStore of homebuilding organization, Habitat for Humanity. It accepts everything from furniture, household prod-ucts, to even the kitchen sink. And ReStores provide a tax receipt for the value of your donation. You can find one in your community at www.habitat.ca/restore.

• Spring cleaning is also an ideal time to safely dispose of expired medications and replace batteries in your smoke detector.

Once the work is done, open the windows wide and let that fresh spring air in.
