Lesson 1
Title: Using a Calendar as a Measure
of Time
Grade Level: Kindergarten
Unit of Study: Timelines
Estimated Pace: Ongoing
Abstract: A daily calendar routine will be established with student participation.
The students will use a calendar to measure time. GLCE:
H2.0.1 Distinguish among yesterday, today, and tomorrow.
Key Concepts:
Yesterday, today, tomorrow
Days of the week, months, year
Past, present, future
Events: school, holidays, birthdays
Important Questions to Ask:
How do we know what day it is?
What day was it yesterday? What day will it be tomorrow?
Sequence of Activities: Concepts within this activity will build throughout the year.
1. Establish calendar routines at the beginning of the school year. For example, singing the days of the
week song, counting the days, pointing out the month and year, looking ahead at upcoming special
events, graphing the weather, etc.
2. About a month or two after establishing calendar routines, point out the concepts of yesterday, today,
and tomorrow. Ask “if today is Wednesday, what day will it be tomorrow? If today is Wednesday,
what day was it yesterday?” (see Summative Assessment). Use the calendar in authentic ways that is
meaningful for the students. You may want to use some of the suggested resources to supplement
your instruction (see below).
3. Introduce, build, and establish vocabulary.
Connections:
English Language Arts
Writing personal narratives using calendar events.
Mathematics - Align calendar routine with district math curriculum
Sequencing and patterns
Growing number line
Graphing

Lesson 2
Title: Historical Narrative or Story Timeline
Grade Level: Kindergarten
Unit of Study: Timeline
Estimated Pace: 3-5 Days
Abstract: The students will learn about the past by reading (or being read to)
and discussing historical narratives or stories and will be able to sequence
the beginning, middle, and end.
GLCE:
H2.0.3 Identify the beginning, middle, and end of historical narratives and stories.
H2.0.4 Describe ways people learn about the past (e.g., photos, artifacts, diaries, stories, and
videos)
Key Concepts:
Learning about the past
Sequencing the beginning, middle, and end
Changes over time
Events: school, holidays, birthdays, family
Important Questions to Ask:
Build some personal connections with the story you choose before/after reading.
What can we learn about the past?
What happened at the beginning, middle, and, end?
Sequence of Activities:
1. Read a historical narrative or story to the class (not a biography). See Suggested Resources section.
In addition to stories, you may want to bring in relevant photos, artifacts, videos, or other items.
2. Identify beginning, middle and end of the narrative or story.
3. Discuss how we use the past to learn about people in our history.
4. The students will retell the beginning, middle, and end of their stories to a partner.
5. Have students create a picture timeline of a historical narrative or story, demonstrating an
understanding of beginning, middle and end in sequence. You may want to use the Timeline Plan
Sheet.
Connections:
English Language Arts
Identifying story organization
Mathematics
Sequencing/ordering
Instructional Resources:

Lesson 3
Title: Personal Timeline
Grade Level: Kindergarten
Unit of Study: Timeline
Estimated Pace: 3-4 Weeks
Abstract: The student will create and present a picture timeline about his or
her life.
GLCE:
H2.0.2 Create a timeline using events from their own lives (e.g., birth, crawling, walking, loss of first
tooth, first day of school).
H2.0.4 Describe ways people learn about the past (e.g., photos, artifacts, diaries, stories, and videos).
Key Concepts:
Sequencing events
Past and present
Learning about yourself, events in your own history
Important Questions to Ask:
How do we learn about the past?
Did you learn to crawl first or walk first?
What do you remember about being a baby?
How old were you when you started school?
When is/was your birthday?
Sequence of Activities:
1. Review/discuss activities from Lesson 2: Historical Narrative or Story Timeline.
2. Bring/share a photo, babybook, journal, etc. from your past. Ask students what they know about
you by looking at the artifacts.
3. Model a teacher timeline.
4. Students will discuss with a partner events they could include in their own personal timeline.
5. Students will create a personal timeline with 4 events in proper sequence using the help of their
family and at-home resources (photos, baby albums, videos, etc.). You may choose to do this
timeline as an in-class activity or homework.
6. Students will share their timeline and resources with the class. Optional – use the timeline as a

Kindergarten Personal Timeline Homework Directions
Attached is a Personal Timeline Plan Sheet for your child to do as homework with the assistance of an adult. He/she may also use resources, such as photos, babybooks, and/or journals. Directions: Create a personal timeline using events from your own life. For example, think of when you were born, crawling, walking, loss of first tooth, dance class, first day of school, etc. Draw and label your pictures with #1 being when you were the youngest and #4 being when you are around your current age. Label each box with what age you were and what you are doing in the picture. Bring the timeline back to school to share with your classmates. Optional – also bring in photo(s), babybook, journal, artifacts, etc. from your past. This Timeline Homework should be returned to school by _____________________________.
