The British website The Rough Guide rated Almaty among the top 10 cities worth visiting in 2014. “It’s no longer the capital (that title went to Astana in 1997) but Almaty remains Kazakhstan’s most alluring city. Its setting along the old Silk Road, with rippling mountains all around, is as exotic as they come. Add this to the recent economic boom, which has seen luxury brands pumping millions into new developments.” Almaty hosted the 2011 Asia Winter Games, and is located next to the Medeo skating rink and Shymbulak ski resort. The beauty of nearby lakes, Sharyn canyon, and sandy dunes draws tourists from all over the world.

My overall experience in the program was wonderful. The students, of course, were at the center of the experience, and they made it memorable. All of the students were earnest, motivated, polite, and engaged. While they had good knowledge of Central Asian affairs, they had a fairly weak grasp of issues in many other regions of the world, key historical events and figures in international relations. I was able to invite five guest speakers to my class, who contributed new and valuable perspectives to the course material. I loved my students, and am surprised at how much some of them already know about U.S. diplomatic history and foreign policy.

I value my experience in ISS 2014 for several reasons. As a faculty member I am always delighted to walk into a classroom full of students from all over the world who come to KIMEP University eager to learn and forge friendships. The students' commitment creates a nurturing environment and in three weeks I discover development of expertise, a heightened academic interest, and career choices set around the topics that we have discussed. It is always an honor to teach to a group of amazing students in Almaty in a perfect time of the year.

Completing the International Summer School at KIMEP was an incredible experience. Besides learning Russian, the program helped me to gain a better understanding of Kazakhstan, including its unique culture, fascinating history, and bright future. Situated in the heart of Almaty, a gem hidden by the Tian Shan Mountains, KIMEP was a place where I could meet influential professors from around the world and make lots of new friends.

Edi Studer, University of Bern, Switzerland

ISS program in KIMEP was the most memorable and meaningful time that I have ever spent in this summer. I was very grateful for KIMEP provided me the full scholarship to take high-quality courses so I could have deep understanding about Central Asia's culture and history. I was also impressed by lots of beautiful tour sites around Kazakhstan. I was surprised at the nature's beauty when I walked along the mountains, by the silent grandeur of the desert in Charyn canyon, by amazingly tall and modern buildings that boast the endless potentials of the country's development. I could not forget any single moment that I had enjoyed in Kazakhstan and I would absolutely love to recommend other students to grab this golden opportunity in KIMEP, therefore they can broaden their perspectives and social network to fulfill their desires and dreams.

Lee Ga Hyeon, Konkuk University, South Korea

My staying in KIMEP ISS 2014 was wonderful and fool of incredible experience. I took the course "Central Asia in World Economy" which would be very helpful in my future studies. Lots of useful and interesting issues were discussed from various points of view in the class of Dr. H. Fischer. All students learned together and from each other. I met so many interesting people from all over the world. We discovered Almaty together, got acquainted each other with our native countries and culture. I am happy that I have taken part in International Summer School 2014 and I hope that I will have a chance to come there one more time. Also, many thanks to all organizers for giving a chance to get a scholarship, good accommodation and events!

What students say about us What students say about us

Participating in the ISS was an excellent experience, as it exposed me to the rapid developments in Central Asia, and pushed me to step of my comfort zone to try new things. I learnt more about myself as I adapted to situations such as living in a dormitory with various people from different countries, cooking meals and more. I chose KIMEP because of its style of teaching and the fact that I wanted to experience something different from the other options from my school. I came here not knowing anybody, but after three weeks, I have made many good friends and shared memorable experiences with them.
