THE DREAM ACT• Federal DREAM Act

• D.R.E.A.M. = Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors

• Would provide a pathway to citizenship based on certain criteria (age, education, background, etc.)

• Illinois DREAM Act

• Passed in August 2011

• Not a pathway to citizenship, assists undocumented students in their education

• “DACA”

• D.A.C.A. = Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals

• 2 year protection for undocumented immigrants under 31 who came before age 16

• Came out in June 2011

• Continues to advocate forimmigrant rights

IMMIGRANT YOUTH JUSTICE LEAGUE (IYJL)

• Chicago based organization led by undocumented youth and their allies

• Started centered around the pending deportation of a UIC student in 2010

• Advocate for/support undocumented immigrants and their families

• Started the “Coming Out of the Shadows” rally that has spread throughout the nation

the Secure Communities Program
