Mikael Akke, biophysical chemistry, together with sci- entists at KILU, biology and medicine, was awarded a project grant from Knut and Alice Wallenberg founda- tion. The project runs for five years and the funds made available are 40 MSEK. The group will study the interac- tion between drugs and their targets. Peter Schurtenberger, physical chemistry and Sara Linse, center for molecular protein science, were both awarded ERC advanced grants. Each will receive slightly more than 20 MSEK. Sara will study amyloid beta aggrega- tion, while Peter was funded for studies of colloids with complex interactions. We note that of the 8 ERC advanced grants that came to Sweden, 2 ended up at KILU. We congratulate Mikael, Sara and Peter and coworkers and wish them success in their research! Finally, we note that this year’s Nobel prize in chemistry was awarded jointly to Martin Karplus, Michael Levitt and Arieh Warshel. From the motivation given by the Royal Academy of Sciences we quote: “The work awarded this year´s Nobel Prize in Chemistry focuses on the development of methods using both classical and quantum mechanical theory and that are used to model large complex chemical systems and reactions.” This year’s prize reflects the fact that computer simulations are becoming an increasingly important tool in chemical research. The three awardees have made im- portant contributions to this field. As tradition has it, we hope that (at least) one of the prize winners will visit Lund in connection with the Nobel prize ceremony in Stockholm. Olle and Jan-Olle Employees Johan Ohlin has started to work at the administration as work environment coordinator. Johan succeeds Eva Qvarnström retiring in November 2013. We will say farewell to Eva on 14 November at 15.00. If you want to parti- cipate please contact Annelie Raimer. Doctoral student in biochemistry PhD studies towards solving mechanisms of self-assembly of amyloid pro- teins using a physico-chemical approach. Development of methodology for and collection of time resolved data. Studies of the role of intrinsic and extrinsic factors, including inhibitors, with an aim of finding which steps in the mechanism are affected. Development of in-vivo screening methods for discovery of more or less aggregation prone protein variants.

Hur blir man forskare?
