I hope that everyone had an enjoyable summer. It’s sad to see it go, although I do look forward to football and the fall season. Kids are back to school, and parents (hopefully!) get back to a normal schedule.

The next few months will be a very busy and active time for the Chamber. In September the KCC will cohost a business networking and referral meeting called “Nexus” with the Clinton Cham-ber. In this networking format, each business will have several opportunities to briefly discuss their

business, how they help their clients, and what the best type of client for them would be. The goal is to educate the rest of the attendees, your “sales force” to be on the lookout for good referrals that will help you grow your business. Over the course of several meetings you will get more comfortable with each business professional and more understanding of how to refer that person. We are trying to generate a climate of refer ability and confidence to help promote businesses amongst the members. Although we all love the Business after Hours events, this is a more structured, efficient, and business focused meeting. We hope to have these meetings monthly moving forward. Please refer to the formal announcement on the front cover. In October we’ll hold the annual Killingworth Pumpkin Carving Party at Parmelee Farm. Please attend our board meeting on September 8th, 7 p.m. at the Killingworth Library if you are interested in helping organize the event.

On page 5 you will find the formal announcement on the 350th Killingworth Anniversary Promotional Booklet. The Chamber hopes to create a special booklet that Killingworth residents will keep for years to come. We are calling on business owners to advertise and residents to provide memories so that we can give the town something to be proud of.

As always, I wish all my fellow Killingworth neighbors the best. I look forward to seeing you at these events! Enjoy these last few weeks of summer.

Amy Roberts-Perry has run a successful business from her home base here in town for many years. Cleaning Services was started in January of 1987. Amy says “After ten years in retail, six in management and weary of moving every time I earned a promotion, I landed in Old Lyme. I had done some cleaning in college and decided I liked the idea of being my own boss. I started with just myself and within six months I hired my first employee. We moved to Killingworth in 1989 and I began to grow the business. Through the years I have employed as many as twenty two people at one time, depending on the health of the economy. Thirty years later we clean approximately sixty houses each week and a few dozen businesses as well. Two of our newly acquired customers are the Essex and Killingworth Librarys.”

Cleaning Services covers the lower Ct River Valley: Madison – Guilford to Old Lyme – East Lyme to Haddam – East Haddam. Amy prides herself on paying her employees well

above minimum wage and providing benefits such as sick time, holiday, vacation and an annual bonus. Many of her employees have been with her company for a long time. As Amy says… “They like their job, which ensures they do it well”. Amy still cleans the original house she started with in Essex 30 years ago. The owner has seen different faces doing the cleaning, but she’s always available if there is a problem and correction is immediate. This kind of hands on service is what her customers have come to count on.

An average house cleaning costs between $60 to $150 depending on size and frequency of the cleaning. Cleaning Services is insured and bonded and carries workman comp, general liability and unemployment. If you are looking for a job or are looking for responsible house cleaning services, feel free to give Amy a call at (860) 663-3330 or (860) 434-9636. References available upon request.

Meet Hannah, winner of the 2016 Killingworth Idol, a dignified 13 year-old chow mix. In her youth, Hannah could often be found hiking mountain trails and cooling off in the streams of Montana and Colorado. This well-trav-eled, semi-retired pup now spends her days closer to home with her family. She also enjoys barking at deer from the windows of her home and visiting her neighbors while mentoring her younger sister Keiko, a lab mix. Congratulations Hannah!

Killingworth’s #2 tag is proudly worn by a spunky german shepherd owned by the Fox family. Three year-old Sasha, a wildlife enthusiast who loves to chase deer and moles in her yard, caught her first mole when she was just 10 weeks old! Sasha is also a rock collector, proudly depositing them in the house for her family to enjoy. While Sasha is now one of Killingworth’s Idols, big brother Major is clearly her idol!

Recommended by my cousin, I reserved a suite sight unseen. When I arrived I was greeted by a spectacular view of a beautiful pond and soaring trees. A group of chickens came over to greet me and I was welcomed by Tema and given a tour of the building. It is beautifully laid out and our room was gorgeous. Every detail was seen to, down to fresh lilies. I wish I could have spent more time there but my visit was short. I slept very well in a very, very comfy bed. Took a shower in the fantastic huge bathroom! Tema made myself and three others an amazing breakfast that would rival a three star restaurant. Freshly squeezed orange juice, fresh cof-fee, fresh fruit, danish, croissants, yogurts, and a baked egg dish with shiitake mushrooms that was divine. Took a hike around the

grounds to marvel at the flower beds, the birds, the fish ponds, the mushroom houses, and the trees. Just a beautiful serene retreat. So sorry I couldn’t stay longer but I’ll be back. Thank you for a short but

sweet stay. I highly recommend this gem of a Bed And Breakfast! –

Rumors have been circulating fast and furious in the library world: interlibrary loan no longer exists, you can’t reserve items anymore, the statewide delivery service is gone… Thankfully, to borrow a phrase from Mark Twain, the reports of their death have been greatly exaggerated.

It is true that the new online interlibrary loan system has yet to go live (after reQuest was shut down over a year ago). A test statewide catalog has been created; once the bugs are worked out, it will be released for use by the public. The integrative interlibrary loan system should follow a few months later. Without this online system, it takes a little more legwork, paperwork, and staff time to maintain ILLs – because of this, some libraries in the state have decided to stop some part, or all, of their interlibrary loan services.

Good news: Killingworth Library continues to offer interlibrary loan. You may request items from other libraries either in person at our circulation desk, by phone, or by email: [email protected]. The only items we cannot get through ILL at this time are new items published within the past 6 months (a guideline set by the State). But we always consider new items for addition to our collection, so ask away!

The statewide delivery service – formerly called CCar, now renamed deliverITCT – has undergone some

budget-saving changes. This means that libraries do not necessarily receive as many pickups and deliveries as they used to, but the system is still running. (Killingworth is serviced twice a week now, rather than every weekday.) Because of this change, the State Library is enacting stricter rules of what and how much can be sent through the delivery system. Library consortiums (like LION) used CCar heavily to swap reserves among their member libraries; but now they are limited in the volume of reserves they can fill at any one time. So if you go on the LION catalog page, a message appears alerting patrons that they may only place holds on 5 items at a time.

Good news: Killingworth Library is not part of a library consortium, so we do not limit the number of reserves placed by our patrons. So reserve to your heart’s content! (And remember that you can place reserves online, as well as in person, and by phone.) Thanks to Baker & Taylor’s book leasing service, we are able to lease extra copies of the most popular titles, so our waiting lists are never too long.

Be sure to give the library staff and volunteers a big “Thank You” for all the work they do in placing requests, packing items for delivery, and suggesting new materials for the collection. There will always be some bumps in the road, but we try to make them as smooth as possible.

Mystery Book Club – “In Cold Blood” by Connecticut author David Handler.

Mitch Berger, a top film critic with a major New York newspaper, has become a recluse since his wife died a year ago. Scheming to pull him out of the doldrums of his grief, his editor gives him a non-film assignment–to do a color story on the wealthy and social homeowners on Connecticut’s Gold Coast. He is fortunate to find a cottage to rent on Big Sister, a private island outside the town of Dorset. His landlady, Dolly, is pleasant but other inhabitants of this small island are not happy to have Mitch arrive in their back yard. The discovery of a body during a bout of optimistic gardening in Dolly’s back yard brings on the other main player - Lieutenant Desiree Mitry, one of only three women on the Connecticut State Police major crimes squad. She is, a closet artist and a complicated and beautiful woman, who intrigues Mitch from the start……..

The Mystery Book Club meets September 15th at 6:30 p.m.

11th anniversary, you say? “Why celebrate THAT? It’s not 10 years. It’s not 25.” Maybe not, but it has surely been ELEVEN wonderful, JOYful years.

I’m Joey Morman, owner of The Fitness Connection. I’ve been keeping Connecticut women healthy & fit for over 11 years. For me, every day is a celebration with my clients – of life, of health, of strength and most impor-tantly– of connection and gratitude.

At the ripe age of 48, after 25+ years in the corporate world, 50 hour work weeks, 2-3 hour daily commutes and missing many of my children’s countless milestones, a life long dream came to fruition. The doors of The Fitness Connection opened and I have never looked back. Every week a community of women from as far away as West Hartford come together to work their bodies, renew their minds & connect on countless more levels than just fitness. My gym currently offers private training, strength classes, stretching classes (incorporating some yoga and meditation), and weight loss coun-seling. The true bonus of training in this small gym setting? The DESIRE to never miss a training day – week after week, year after year – fostered by the inspiring women who maintain their fitness here. It is THE priceless benefit.

How many times have you start-ed a diet/fitness program and a month later you’re back on the couch? Another failed fitness attempt. The fav jeans are still too tight and you’re feeling even worse about yourself. Familiar? Or perhaps you’re aging or overweight and your doctor

recommends a fitness program. These are just a few reasons my clients start here. And they STAY!

The age trend at The Fitness Connection has shown itself to be about 40-70. I also have women in their 20’s, 30’s and mid-late 70s. It’s a wonderful blend of generations and is part of the magic of this gym. In fact – one client, dealing with arthritis & a knee and hip replacement, wrote this testimonial after only 5 weeks:

“Joey’s strength classes are what any doctor would order to build muscles and strength, especially as we grow older. Her classes are physically challenging and emotionally satisfying – they are never boring because she changes the routines for each class. As a 74-year old youngster with some joint problems, Joey takes the time to adapt some exercises to my fitness ability as well as making them more intense for those who are more advanced. After 5 weeks of classes twice a week, I have more energy and feel stronger. I wholeheartedly recommend strength classes at The Fitness Connection.” – Joan Gay.

Joan is now in her 2nd year of strength training, comes to a stretch class once a week and shows up religiously to all 3!

This non-threatening environ-ment brings my clients back month after month, but it’s not just the exercise! It’s connecting with motivating, like-minded individuals. A special benefit is the reliable recommendations from the 100+ women I see each week. We share plumbers, painters & doctors, books, movies & music, farm markets, vacation spots & recipes. The running joke is – Another non-fitness connection! More bang for the buck!

So yes – I would say this anniversary is one to be celebrated! I’ve had the privilege of training some of the best people one could ever meet. I am humbled every day by their faith in me and grateful for the amazing humanity, commitment and dedication they bring into the gym. May I be blessed with at least another 11, connecting and training wonderful, funny, generous, awesome ladies!

Happy 11th Anniversary to The Fitness Connection!

Please dress for the weather, wear waterproof boots, bring garden loppers or saw, sunscreen, bug repellant, first aid supplies, and water. Snacks will be provided . Do not bring pets. Volunteers with Haddam dump trucks and stickers are needed. The event is being planned by CT DEEP Adopt- a -Park volunteers, Cherry Czuba and Mary Lou Heger. To register email Cherry Czuba at [email protected]. This year 22 volunteers worked at two spring invasive cleanups. Come join the fun and make a difference in your state park.

The Killingworth Park & Recreation Commission is pleased to announce the addition of two Pickle Ball courts to the tennis courts at Sheldon Park on Route 80. This addition for our seniors makes the tennis courts a three-generation facility: Youth Tennis, Adult Tennis, Senior Pickle Ball. The first pickle ball games were played on the new courts at Sheldon on Tuesday, August 9th. Many seniors are finding out how bene-ficial, both physically and mentally, this scaled-down version of tennis is for them. For example, The Villages, a senior-living city in Florida, has over 100 pickle ball courts.

For further information, you may call Jacqueline Wilcox at (860) 663-9962 or email [email protected].

According to sciencekids.com, Sunflowers can be used to extract toxin such as lead, arsenic and uranium from contaminated soil. For example, sunflowers were used to remove toxins from a pond after the Chernobyl disaster and similar projects took place after the Fukushima nuclear disaster.

Another busy summer season is winding down and we have so much to be thankful for here at the farm. Many thanks to the hard working crew operating the Shared Harvest Garden. Locals with excess produce can donate to the Thursday produce giveaway. For more information on the Shared Harvest Garden, contact Mary Solera at [email protected]

The Parmelee Farm Market, now in it’s second year, has grown in vendor numbers and customer turnout. We would like to extend a thank you to the volunteers that help put it on and the many vendors for coming. Last market of the season to be held on Saturday, September 10th from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. If you haven’t done so already, please join us and load up on all the goodies available. Besides delicious, good-for-you fresh produce, our artisans have some awesome gift ideas for you too. For more info on the market, contact coordinators Karen Milano and Linda Dudek at [email protected].

The Stone barn has a new roof thanks to the gener-ous time and skill donation of some talented volunteers along with a paid contractor. So much of the work being done at the farm over the years has been accomplished because of devoted town residents who are as happy as we are to see everyone make use of the farm in the many ways it has become possible.

Our last Free Chamber concert of the season will be held on Sunday Sept. 11th from 3-5 p.m. Performers are “Washboard Slim & The Bluelights”. Bring your lawn chairs, blankets, dinner, drinks.. sit in the shade and enjoy the music. Thank you to the Chamber of Commerce, among others, for sponsoring this event.

We were very lucky to have our HK student worker, Lilly Meyer return to work at the farm for a second year. She has been a tremendous help and a very hard worker. Last but certainly not least, many thanks to all the Parmelee volunteers who do all the field mowing and general upkeep of the proper-ty. They always have the Farm looking terrific and in the heat we’ve experi-enced this summer, that was no easy task.

As always, we hope to see you at the farm!

Heartsafe. It’s been a couple of years since Killingworth officially be-came a Heartsafe community, thanks to the Killingworth Ambulance Associ-ation and many residents who stepped up to get trained in CPR and the use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs). That means it’s time for many of us to get recertified. Please contact the

Killingworth Ambulance Association at 860-663-2450 and leave a message, or register for a class on the Ambulance web site Killingworthambulance.org.

Revaluation. By law, the town must conduct a property revaluation every five years, and the 2016 reval-uation is in full swing. The assessor’s office will continue taking photos and conducting field inspections this month. If substantial construction work on your property was permitted since the last revaluation, an exterior inspection may be done. We received an excellent response to the data verification mailers sent last fall. If you have request-ed an interior inspection, the office will be contacting you to arrange a time. We expect to notify all property owners of their preliminary assessment in mid-October. This will allow us ample time for informal hearings to address any errors or concerns. During the informal hearings we may request further inspections, which will be scheduled before the end of the year. The Grand List based on the new valuations will be finalized by the end of January 2017.

Pickleball, anyone? NBC Nightly News called Pickle-ball the fastest growing sport in America (maybe because it is so much fun to say?). If you haven’t heard of it, it’s a combination of tennis, badminton, and ping pong. The game is easy to learn and accessible to people of all ages. Now, the Park & Recreation Commission has added lines to one of the tennis courts at Sheldon Park, creating two, new pickleball courts. Check out the article on page 16 of this issue, and come on over and play!

Shared Harvest Garden. Locally grown produce—mostly from the community gardens at Parmelee Farm—is offered for free on Thursday afternoons from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. The stand will run until the end of September at Parmelee Farm, 465 Route 81. If you have your own garden and it is overflowing, the Shared Harvest Garden welcomes contributions of fresh produce. Please bring it to the farm at 3:30 on Thursdays.

Fuel assistance. Applications for fuel assistance will be accepted starting October 1; application forms are available now at Town Hall or the Library. You may call the town’s municipal agent, Mercedes Ricciuti, at 860-663-1765, x217 for further information.

School’s in session. I know you are busy, but please slow down for the sake of the kids, the dog walkers, the horse riders, the bicyclists, and even the other cars.

Coffee with the First Selectwoman. Fridays, 8:30 a.m.: September 9, Copper Skillet; September 16, Dunkin Donuts; September 23, Cozy Corner Bakery. Municipal Agent Mercedes Ricciuti will join me on the 16th; come with any questions you have, or just say hi!

To all residents of Killingworth, the Killingworth Plan-ning and Zoning Commission (P & Z) is undertaking review and revision of the Town Plan of Conservation and Devel-opment as required by state statute. This is done every ten years. One of the first steps involves getting feedback from Killingworth town residents on what you would like our town to be, as we develop and grow.

This is your opportunity to help the Killingworth Planning and Zoning Commission create a Town Plan of Conservation and Development that will reflect the voices of Killingworth residents.

A survey form has been placed on the Killingworth website (www.townofkillingworth.com) that is easy to com-plete ( takes about 10 minutes) and allows you to partici-pate (anonymously, if you wish). The Survey will be on the website through the end of September, 2016. Your input is valuable and the survey will not take long to complete. It’s your town, and your chance to let us know your thoughts on Killingworth progress and development.
