Anyone who’s seen the newsthis week, or last week, or thisyear, cannot help but beaffected by the crises that areunfolding. There is ahumanitarian crisis in Europe. Itshouldn’t need a picture of adead 3yr old child to provoke aresponse- we all knew it washappening. And in case you’rewondering, I’m not having apolitical rant against our currentgovernment or working up to asales pitch for supportingrefugees and those lessfortunate than ourselves(though at this harvest time, aswe give thanks for what we havereceived, it is appropriate for usto think of and act to help thosewho are struggling to survive). Those who are rich are blessed,

From the Rectory ..and have a responsibility tohelp those who are poor- we alllook to others and say they arericher than me, but in reality ifwe can afford to go on holidayanywhere, have any kind of apension, are able to keep a petor a car or own a home… thenwe are rich. I say this to shamemyself.I heard a story the other day ofa chaplain who ministered tothe needs of seafarers wholanded on his shores and werefar from home. The ministerasked them through aninterpreter if there wasanything that those sailorsmight like or anywhere they’dlike him to take them while theywere there. Back came theanswer - they would like to go

somewhere they could walk ongrass. And so it happened thatthe chaplain took these men,Filipino’s, Ukrainians andChinese sailors who had spentthe last six months at sea withonly a heaving steel deck undertheir feet, to a nearby park.Once there, they took off theirshoes and socks and veryreverently, and with evident joyon their faces, they walkedbarefoot on the fresh grass.“Goodness me,” said theChaplain, “anyone would havethought that I had given themthe earth!”Thinking about that story, itseems to me, that is exactlywhat that Chaplain had done.

KilkhamptonCHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP

Harvest Thanksgiving services arein full swing and it’s good to thankGod for the harvest, and at thesame time remember those in theworld where harvest has not beengood; devastated by flood, drought, fire or earthquake, orwhere countries are torn apart bywar. Many farmers are already planningnext year’s harvest because to geta harvest you have to plan it,prepare for it, and work for it,whether it’s a window box, anallotment or a field. What are youplanning to harvest in your life, your relationships (and thatincludes your marriage) thiscoming year? Will it be the sameold, with it’s problems andinadequacies, or are you going toplan and work for something betterbecause, if we don’t, the old adageapplies “ If you always do whatyou have always done, you will getwhat you have always got.” So,get planning and working! It’sworth it! And, think about theharvest you will have next year.

I found this in “A basket of Gems”and leave it for you to ponder.A man dies and goes to heaven.Of course, St Peter meets him atthe pearly gates.St Peter says, “Here’s how itworks. You need 100 points tomake it into heaven. You tell meall the good things you’ve done, and I give you a certain number ofpoints for each item, depending onhow good it was. When you reach100 points, you get in.“OK” the man says. “I was marriedto the same woman for fifty yearsand never cheated on her, even inmy heart.”“That’s wonderful,” says St Peter.“That’s worth three points!”“Three points?” he says. “Well, Iattended church all my life andsupported its ministry with my titheand service.”“Terrific!” says St Peter. “That’scertainly worth a point.”“One point? Golly. How about this:I started a soup kitchen in my cityand worked in a shelter forhomeless veterans,”“Fantastic – that’s good for twomore points.”

“Two points?!” the man cries. “Atthis rate the only way I’ll get intoheaven is by the grace of God!”“Come on in!”

I am new to Kilkhampton. Well, that’s not strictly true because wefirst moved to Hartland in 1972and, apart from 14 years, we havebeen resident in the area eversince. It is true to say, though, thatI am new to the role of KilkhamptonMethodist minister and that in thefew weeks that I have been here Ihave been made to feel verywelcome and supported, for whichI thank you very much.It seems I have started at a verywet time. As I sit in my office typingthis in the middle of September therain is coming down in torrents. We’ve had a few dry spells thissummer but August has been verywet and harvest has been difficultfor the farmers, and on top of allthat I have just watched thepresenter of the lunchtime forecasttell us that because of the El Ninoeffect we could be in for a colder

winter than normal. Back in 1976we had the driest summer I canever remember, when the whole ofthe Hartland peninsula wasdenuded of grass and the onlygreen area in Devon was the top ofDartmoor, and then a couple ofyears later, when we were living inWelcombe, we had the heaviestsnowfall in many years and it tooka week for the way out to the mainroad to be cleared! We talk about the nationalobsession with the weather andclearly there is enough variationthere to talk about for a lifetime, butwe are wise to remember thatthere are some things in life we justhave to make the most of becausewe can’t actually do anything toalter them. Weather is one, butthere are many others. The realwisdom comes in knowing what wecan influence ourselves, and what

we can’t, and putting aside thosethings that we can’t do anythingabout. This is where trust in aloving God helps. It is easy for usto fret over those things we can donothing about and in so doing justwear ourselves out with the stressof it all. If, however, we can talk toGod about our insoluble problemsit’s surprising how often they areactually resolved, sometimes invery unexpected ways. Thisleaves us free to use our Godgiven abilities to find the right wayforward where we can. Finally, don’t use God as the backstop, theinstruction manual you turn towhen all else has failed. Involvehim in all things and somehow lifegets easier, and bad weatherseems less important!Every blessingJohn (John Peak)

‘TREE’ BOOK GROUPThe book for review at theSeptember meeting was:Remarkable Creatures by TracyChevalier. The main character of the book isMary Anning, a fossil hunter fromLyme Regis, who really existedand was an incredible person –clever but uneducated, workingclass yet at home with all levels ofsociety, female yet independent ofspirit and financially.

Mary is brought to life through theeyes of Elizabeth Philpot whofounded a museum in Lymededicated to fossils.

For those who have an interest ingeology, this novel will have aspecial appeal. However, thestory is enjoyable even withoutthis interest as the writing is skilledand compelling. Not strictly abiography as artistic licence hasbeen applied.

The next meeting is WednesdayOctober 21st, 2015 at 11am at theTree Inn in Stratton.

UNCLE ERIC’S PAGESchooling

School fills our time from childhood days until our teenageyearsIt helps to mould our characters, allay our childhood fears. At first we do not realise what skills we may possessNor what our future life will hold, both failure and success.

We all have dreams about our life and what we’d like to be;For some, a Pop Star, Astronaut or maybe an M.P!A surgeon or an architect. a Star of screen and stage,A farmer or a footballer, whatever is the rage!

For others, choice is wider still, so much have we progressed:Perhaps a clothes designer, just to keep our rich well dressed!A tennis star, a doctor, maybe a rural dean,Or possibly a writer in a motor magazine.

But these are all a long way off, whatever is our yearningFor school is there for discipline and most of all for learning. We older ones have memories, some good or maybe dread,Hopefully all we were taught has stood us in good stead.

The friends we made, the things we learned both physical andmentalWere part of all our growing up and not just incidental.Whatever path of life you tread, just thank your educationFor past or present, future too, it’s a part of our great nation!
