Welcome
Welcome to the 2019 Eltham High School Celebration Concert.
Our vision for the Eltham High School Music Department is to continue to nurture and promote a life-longlove for music and the creative process. Our Music Department enjoys incredible support within the schooland the community, which allows our program to be one of the strongest Instrumental Music Programs inAustralia. All ensembles are built around a strong sense of community, dedication and pride. We thankyou for your continued support as it allows us the wonderful opportunity of seeing our students grow anddevelop personally through their involvement in the Music Program.
2019 has been an extremely successful year for our extra-curricular Music Program, with all of ourensembles achieving outstanding results at the various festivals and eisteddfods. Tonight is ouropportunity to share with you the great music that has been created during each rehearsal andperformance. The success of all ensembles in the program is largely due to the dedication and trustdemonstrated by the students who support the ensemble directors throughout every rehearsal andperformance. Our music staff are highly skilled educators that have the ability to inspire our students toachieve beyond what they believe is possible.
I would like to thank all of our music staff whose expertise, care and commitment to the students is aninspiration to us all. I would also like to thank our Music Secretary, Jane Nicholson, for all the hard workand support that she provides the staff, students and parents of the Music Program. I would like to makespecial mention of our Ensemble Directors who continue to pick demanding repertoire and work tirelesslyto ensure that their musicians are proud of the music that they are creating.
The Symphonic Band has been immersed in the process of preparing to record a submission for the 2020Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago. Tonight's performance will feature the two pieces that wewill submit for our application.
October, Opus 131 by Shostakovich is our major work for this recording. It is exciting, powerful, technicallydemanding for every player and exciting to perform. Due to Shostakovich living in Europe through WorldWar 1 and 2, the history behind this piece and its composer is tied in with what is now known as some ofthe darkest days of humanity. Shostakovich has encapsulated these devastating events and the emotionsassociated in the most powerful and expressive way.
Born in St. Petersburg in 1906, Shostakovich was one of the most prominent composers of the 20thcentury. As required under Communist rule, Shostakovich was a member of the Union of SovietComposers and forced to adhere to the ideals of Socialist Realism. All art, including literature, drama, painting, and music, needed to portray socialism in a positive light, and music was expected to be tonal, accessible, and folk-inspired.
Much of Shostakovich's career was shaped by totalitarian oppression, which dictated the music he couldproduce. Though he had to comply for his safety and his career, the regime's restrictive rules elicitedShostakovich's disapproval and constant fight against them. Shostakovich's use of self-quotation frompolitically critical works in this piece appearing to celebrate the October Revolution is a credit to his skill asa composer and his dedication to freedom of expression despite the restrictions of Soviet Realism.
I hope you all enjoy what promises to be another inspiring evening of music.
