13 young men from the Katherine Academy worked hard during the year to complete all work requirements and reach an attendance of 80% or higher. Upon achieving these results the boys where rewarded with an end of year trip to Perth.

LEADERSHIPKatherine Academy February 27, 2012

The trip started with usual trek up the Stuart High way to Darwin. Once we arrived it was onto the plane for our fl ight. We arrived in Perth to be greeted by Karl Pirrontina the Director of the Clontarf Academy in Perth. We then headed to Woodman Point where we would be staying. Once settled we had a quick dinner and then took part in the Ghost Tour of the site as well as learning a bit about the history of the camp site.

An early rise the next morning saw us on the bus and heading south to Bunbury. While in Bunbury we visited the Dolphin Discovery Centre, did some surfi ng at Yallingup beach and made our way into town to watch a movie on the big screen.

The next day we headed to Penguin Island. The boys were treated to some penguin feeding and got a close up look at some Sea Lions. That evening we headed into the city for dinner with the boys being treated to some pizza and parma’s. Once we had restocked our energy levels it was of to Pot Black pool centre were the boys quickly showed off the skills on the eight ball tables. After a long day the boys crashed into bed.

Wednesday provided us with some abseiling, fl ying fox and a rope challenge course in the morning, while the afternoon saw the boys working together in teams to complete the search and rescue course at Woodman Point. A quick lunch was had and then it was time to get into the water for some snorkeling. The boys were again challenged with their team work skills by taking part in the escape from quarantine challenge. This required the boys to fi nd certain objects around the camp site and report back to base.

Thursday morning arrived and the boys were treated to a tour of the Western Australian Institute of Sport. The boys got a close up look at what it takes to be a professional athlete. Both Keelan Fejo and Jamie Walker tested well in the vertical leap and the bench press. We were then treated to a BBQ lunch at Clontarf’s head offi ce in Burswood. With a full stomach it was then of to Adventure World for some fun in the sun. That night we were treated to a great meal at The Shed, and then it was time for some laser tag. Director Ryan Woolfe took the game very serious with many a commando roll in the building. The boys had a great time.

The next day the boys had the opportunity to meet some of the Clontarf Foundations partners. The interaction between the academy members and its partners was a great way for both parties to understand a little more about how each other operates and for the Katherine lads to show their appreciation to the Nickel West and Territory Resources staff.

Then we were off to Subiaco oval where tour guide Bob showed us around and educated us on the history of the oval and all the past great AFL players who had played there. We were then off to the famous Cottesloe beach where the boys enjoyed a great swim. The fi nal day of camp had come around way too quick but the boys were still full of energy. We were treated to an action packed day. We enjoyed a ride on the Swan Jet Boat followed by some Parasailing. The boys then hit the shops to spend up at Harbour town shopping centre.

That night we headed off to the Perth Heat baseball club where a number of boys got the chance to take part in the exhibition Baseball game against the Western Force Rugby Union team and Perth Heat. Ian Dempsey Kruger managed to make it home and the boys enjoyed hanging out in the dugout with the players from both sports. We then kicked up our heels and sat back to watch the major game. The boys entertained the crowed with all their songs and dancing in the stand with Lawrence Watego in particular putting on a great show to the tune of YMCA.

What a week, jam packed with great times and plenty of fun had by all. A big thanks to Woodman Point for their accommodation, to Karl Pirrontina from the Clontarf academy for letting us use the bus, and to all the staff at head offi ce for providing us with a great lunch. To all the providers of the activities well done to you all and fi nally to all the boys who worked hard during the year to make to trip a fantastic experience for all.
